Salters' Festival of Chemistry On Thursday 24 May four of our budding young First Year scientists, Lucy, Oona, Portia and Amelie, attended the Salters' Festival of Chemistry, hosted by the Chemistry Department at the University of Surrey. In the morning they took part in two challenges, the Salters' Investigation, where the pupils had to complete a series of experiments to help them determine "who stole the cup", and the University Challenge, which involved the pupils creating a range of different dyes from natural products. While the girls worked away, Mrs Radley had a tour of the fantastic analysis machinery and labs in the Chemistry Department, some of which are set up just like those at Glaxo Smith Kline. After lunch everyone enjoyed a fantastic chemistry "magic show" which was a thrill of colour and fire! Our team were then delighted to be awarded 3rd prize for the University Challenge, a fine achievement considering they were pitted against many older pupils from a range of schools. We left the University in a buzz of excitement, feeling inspired and with a sense of achievement.
