This week has seen a buzz of excitement and energy on campus with lots of celebrations and many important conversations sparked!
On Tuesday night we took over the basement at His Majesty’s for the ‘May the Music Be with You’ Extravaganza. The concert was a showcase of the many talents of our wonderful musicians across all year groups in a new and exciting venue that certainly had the electric vibe of the city. It was sensational to see so many students on stage throughout the night with 20 pieces performed. The evening clearly demonstrated the importance of and passion for music in our students’ lives. Congratulations to all who performed, and to the Music Department Staff who ushered, encouraged, reassured, congratulated, and rehearsed in earnest so that the students could be the best performers they could be on the night. Thank you also to our highly supportive community of parents, grandparents, friends, and former students who came to watch and applaud our performers. It was wonderful to see so many of you there in what was a jam-packed event.
Wednesday at school saw us celebrate the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) in a joyous manner through a student led initiative managed by the Student Guild, under the guidance of our Community Captain, Ben Gardner. The day reaffirms our support and efforts to continue to foster a safe and inclusive school environment where we cheer and celebrate our many differences. The more our diversity is celebrated and embraced the easier it becomes for everyone to be proud to be themselves no matter who they are, and to equally embrace the differences and uniqueness that they see and find in others. I was immensely proud of all who wore rainbow theme for free dress day creating vital LGBTQIA+ awareness, inclusion, and visibility for IDAHOBIT Day, as well as raising funds for Minus 18 – an Australian Charity which seeks to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth. Wednesday for me reaffirmed that it is most definitely okay to stand out at St George’s – it was a brilliant day!

Brilliance was also on display at the Lincoln Parent Sundowner on Thursday night where Mr Vincent Lim as Head of Lincoln House, supported by his 2023 House Captains - Sydnee Gould and Lorena Bongiovanni - celebrated the true spirit of what is a very determined Lincoln House who continuously strive to achieve their House motto of excellence with optimism, energy, resilience, and an abundance of smiles, support and laughter. The evening was well attended by the Lincoln House Community and proved to be a wonderful way for our parent body to connect across year groups.
Thank you to Mr Lim, the Lincoln House staff and to all Lincoln parents who attended what has quickly become a much-loved and eagerly anticipated event on the St George’s School Calendar. The Mandela Parent Sundowner will take place on Thursday 31 August - a date for all Mandela House parent’s diaries.

As we are now experiencing cooler mornings, it is lovely to see our students embracing the requirement to wear their blazers to school. However, we still have some work to do in remembering to wear it from school as well!
Students are reminded that school bags are not to be used throughout the day – they must remain in lockers. This includes for all Year 12 students and those moving between the main building and CQU. Those wishing to transport learning resources in a bag, using a small tote is perfect. There are St George’s ones available from Reception or you may use your own.
Another timely reminder to students is to be mindful and respectful when using the shared areas around the school, in particular the breakout spaces during break times. We must all take responsibility for putting rubbish in the bin and wiping down tables if there is a spill. Duty teachers are there to help, so please ask if you need some cleaning equipment.
Finally, it was lovely to welcome the parents of Lincoln students to the House Sundowner last night. Level 4 was awash with yellow and alive with Lincoln House spirit! We value the opportunity to welcome our families into the school campus and continue to grow the important connections between home and school.

OUR CHAPEL, OUR JOY!
As each weekend ends, Monday Chapel is on my heart. It is always a joyful feeling knowing that every Monday I have Chapel with my beloved School family. The words of Psalm 122 always come to mind: “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!” Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem Jerusalem—built as a city that is bound firmly together. To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD…” What a sight to behold on Monday afternoons when red blazers flood St George’s Terrace and Hay Street, as our St George’s tribe—students and teachers - head towards St George’s Cathedral for our weekly Chapel Service or School Assembly. What a privilege we have to use the Cathedral sacred space as our chapel! I am so grateful because I know that our students enjoy their time in Chapel. They always give me feedback on the talks that I give them there—recently the Year 10s reminded me of the topics I have covered so far—encouraging! We will make sure that Chapel continues to be a time for spiritual, mental, and intellectual empowerment for our students. My goal is to make students excited and always look forward to Chapel services like the Psalmist was glad when they said to him, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!”

Celebrating IDAHOBIT Day: Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity at St George’s
Dear Guardians and Parents
I hope this newsletter finds you well as we reflect on the school’s celebration of IDAHOBIT Day. IDAHOBIT stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia, and it serves as a reminder to promote inclusivity, understanding, and respect for all members of our diverse community.
At St George’s, we are proud to foster an environment that values and supports every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. Our commitment to inclusivity extends beyond mere words – it is embedded in our actions and initiatives. This is exemplified by our annual IDAHOBIT Day celebrations, which took place recently and left a vibrant and lasting impression on our school community.
This year, each year group had the unique opportunity to express their support for diversity by wearing a different colour. The corridors of St George’s were transformed into a vibrant tapestry. From the energetic reds to the calming blues, each colour represented a powerful message: that diversity is not only celebrated but embraced wholeheartedly within our school.
Beyond the colourful attire, IDAHOBIT Day offered our students and staff a chance to engage in meaningful discussions about the importance of acceptance and empathy.
We have had exciting services this term. Recently, Bishop Kate led our St George’s Day Eucharist. On Monday 29 May, we will celebrate Pentecost Day. I already have some exciting ideas…no balloons this year, but we will hear Acts 2 read in several languages to demonstrate and encourage the continuing growth and celebration of cultural diversity within our unique and special school. And we will continue to make Chapel not just exciting, but also a time of intellectual and spiritual growth.
Father Gift
It is crucial to remember that IDAHOBIT Day is not just a one-day event. Rather, it serves as a reminder to continuously foster a culture of inclusivity and acceptance within our school community. By embracing diversity, we create a space where every student feels valued, respected, and supported in their individuality.
We are proud of the progress we have made thus far, but we recognise that there is always room for improvement. Our commitment to inclusivity goes beyond IDAHOBIT Day, and we will continue to provide educational opportunities, support networks, and initiatives that promote acceptance and celebrate diversity.
As we move forward, let us remain united in our dedication to fostering a community where everyone feels safe, heard, and embraced for who they are.
Together, we can make a positive impact not only within our school but also in the wider world.

Year 11 and 12 ATAR Exams
As Year 11 and Year 12 ATAR students prepare to embark on exam leave next week, we would like to extend our best wishes and support to each of them during this important phase of their academic journey. Students are only required to attend school during their scheduled exams, which will be hosted on Level 5 of CQU at 10 William Street, the same location where some senior school classes are held. Morning exams will begin at 8:30am, with students asked to arrive at 8:00am, while afternoon exams commence at 1:00pm with a 12:30pm arrival time for all students. We encourage all students to use this weekend to devise a wellstructured ‘game plan’ for studying. Focus on prioritising the topics you find most challenging, engage in intentional memorisation techniques such as reading flashcards aloud or handwriting notes repeatedly, and dedicate ample time to completing practice questions under timed conditions. Don’t forget to evaluate your performance by rigorously adhering to the marking key!
The exam timetables can be found below:

Top Study Tip to Fight Procrastination and Stay
Focused
Staying focused while studying is definitely a challenge, but here is a favourite tip of mine to try - turn your phone to Greyscale mode. To turn your iPhone’s screen greyscale, first, navigate to the ‘Settings’
app, then select ‘Accessibility’. Within this menu, select ‘Display & Text Size’, and scroll down until you find ‘Colour Filters’. Once you tap on ‘Colour Filters’, switch it on and select ‘Grayscale’ from the options. This will transform your vibrant screen into shades of grey. It should be noted that similar options are available on Android/ Samsung devices too, typically under ‘Accessibility’ in the ‘Settings’ app. This adjustment is regarded as a leading technique in combating procrastination when studying. The logic is rooted in habit formation theory: to break a habit, you need to make it less appealing. Scrolling through colour-saturated apps like Instagram or TikTok in greyscale mode quickly becomes dull, encouraging users to turn their attention to more productive tasks like studying.
12 APEx Externally Set Tasks
Well done to our Year 12 APEx students over the past two weeks as they have worked hard to complete their Externally Set Tasks (ESTs). The ESTs are a series of 50-minute unseen tests in each subject based on a variety of syllabus criteria. Students will receive their EST results over the course of Week 7 in their classes.
Chat GPT Consent Forms
This week, we sent out a consent form via email to all families with students in Years 9 through 12.
As we previously communicated, and in light of the recent changes to ChatGPT’s terms and conditions that now allow students aged 13 and above to use the software, we plan to progressively integrate it into our classrooms at St George’s Anglican Grammar School.
For more details, please refer to the letter we sent earlier. We kindly ask that completed consent forms be returned to aiconsent@ stgeorges.wa.edu.au by 25 May. All students must have a consent form completed.

Heads of Year Reports
Year 7 and 8
It is hard to believe that we have already entered the middle weeks of Term 2. While the senior students prepare for their Externally Set Tasks and Semester One Examinations, our Year 7s and 8s are completing their first round of assessments for the term. It is during these times that we can sometimes see our younger students becoming overwhelmed or anxious, looking to avoid tests or not performing to potential.
However, instead of viewing assessments in a negative light and worrying about performance, I encourage our students to adopt the mindset that teachers are not looking for academic perfection rather, they are looking for academic progress and effort.
It is the little things that students can do each day to ensure they are demonstrating this effort which in turn will lead to academic progress. Arriving to class on time and prepared with the necessary equipment, completing homework, listening to instructions,
Year 9 and 10
I hope Parent Teacher interviews were full of positive and informative conversations regarding our Year 9s and 10s. Thank you to all staff and parents/guardians for their involvement in these important meetings.
For Year 9 students, we have their highly anticipated social event coming up on 22 June. This will be an excellent opportunity for them to socialise and connect with their peers in a safe and supervised environment at Wembley Golf Course. We have sent information about the event via Direqt message and paper copies are also available for students. Places are limited, so we encourage a response as quickly as possible for those wishing to join in this fun event.
Year 11 and 12
It is hard to believe that we are now at the end of Week 4! Our Senior Students are inching ever closer to their upcoming examinations and assessment tasks.
Continuing with my fortnightly advice on preparing for upcoming exams, I offer the following to be discussed at home:
The nature of examinations and assessments means there is a natural ranking of how students go. It is important to remember
seeking feedback on their work, acting on previous feedback, contributing positively to class discussions, avoiding distractions on their laptop, and using their school diary to remain organised and prepared are but a few.
Viewing assessments as an opportunity to demonstrate how much effort they have put into their learning is another strategy which will alleviate assessment anxiety.
Students, if a result, grade, or feedback is not what you had hoped for this time, stay positive, work hard and see if you can improve upon it next time. These small wins for ourselves are the most important gains and if we track our own progress and improve this leads to small, gradual and incremental wins for us all.
Keep working hard Year 7 and 8s and remember there is plenty of support for you before and after school.
Ms Taryn Sephton Head of Year 7 and 8
Year 10 students have a busy period ahead with many exciting things happening in preparation for their future careers. The Careers Expo excursion is scheduled for Friday 19 May, and we are confident that it will provide valuable insight into the various career paths available.
Additionally, the deadline for work experience applications is fast approaching. We encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity to gain valuable skills and explore potential career paths; hopefully within the heart of the City so that we can drop in and visit them during their work experience placement.
Miss Katie Wilkinson Head of Year 9 and 10
that everyone has different goals in what they wish to achieve, meaning that everyone will have their own distractions competing for their attention. Do not let those distractions affect you. There is nothing wrong with a little competition but be sure that you are running your own race and not someone else’s.
So, if you are going to compare yourself to anyone, let it be yourself and your target be to strive to beat your own personal bests.

G ANDHI HOUSE
The past fortnight has seen Gandhi House performing excellently across the events that have taken place, demonstrating exceptional commitment, talent, and unity in these domains. We are thrilled to announce that we clinched second place in the fiercely competitive Interhouse Cross Country, demonstrating resilience and teamwork. Each of the age categories saw a Gandhi House student excel and place in the top two, earning valuable House Points. Our triumphs did not stop there; we brought home gold once again in the Interhouse Performing Arts Festival Theatre Challenge, reflecting the creativity and determination of our gifted actors. This back-to-back victory from 2022 underscores the consistent excellence of Gandhi House in improvisation comedy. Well done to all who took part.
The crowning jewel of our achievements, however, was earning the inaugural title of the Overall Performing Arts Festival Champion which combines both the dance and drama competitions. Having Gandhi House as the first named House on this trophy is sensational. Our success is a testament to the tireless efforts of our students, teachers, and support from our parents who have committed wholeheartedly to seeing our House succeed. Well done Gandhites!
Mr Alex Hanssen Acting Head of Gandhi House
LINCOLN HOUSE MANDELA HOUSE
This week we saw our PCG Mentors rise to the occasion to run team building activities with our Year 7 and 8 students during Extended PCG. I was so proud to see the mentors interact and lead the activities which the students excitedly took part in.
Next week, Lincoln House looks to join together and head to Wellington Square for a sausage sizzle for a special House event during Extended PCG.
The highlight of the week for Lincoln House, was the inaugural Lincoln Sundowner which was held on Thursday night. It was lovely seeing all the Lincoln parents and guardians gathered together on Level 4 to support Lincoln House and to connect with members of the Lincoln community. Many parents commented on how wonderful it was to have the opportunity to build networks and friendships within the House group and we look forward to growing these connections in the future as this is what makes St George’s so special.
Events such as this take a huge team effort and I would like to thank all who contributed to making it a success.
It was a great night and I look forward to our next opportunity to get together.
Mr Vincent Lim Head of Lincoln House
Congratulations to all students of Mandela House. Over the last two weeks, we have achieved some great accomplishments and the race towards the overall House Cup is becoming intense.
Our students have once again demonstrated their incredible talent, perseverance, and dedication in two recent events: the Interhouse Cross Country competition and the Interhouse Performing Arts Festival. Our students have done a fantastic job and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and commitment!
Firstly, we took home victory in the CrossCountry event. Our students showcased their athletic prowess and commitment to take it home. Well done Mandela, not only for the win but for the high levels of participation across all age groups. It was great to see.
Secondly, for the Interhouse Performing Arts Festival, all students in all Houses performed incredibly well and can be proud of what they achieved on stage. It was such a good night and never easy to perform in front of a packed Town Hall audience. Our talented Mandela team, won the much sought-after Dance Event. This was a big one for us as it is now back home where it belongs, having only ever lost it once in 2022. All Mandela students hard work and practice ultimately paid off. We are lucky to have such creative and talented students in Mandela House and the planning has already started for 2024.
Finally, for Extended PCG last week, Mandela House had a race around the city to find clues and emerge victorious. Well done M5 Ms Scheele’s PCG for taking out the win. It was a great way to work together and increase House Spirit. Go Mandela!
Mr Tom Dempers Head of Mandela House

Maximizing Work Experience: A Guide for Year 10 Students
Work experience is a valuable opportunity for Year 10 students to gain practical insights into the professional world and explore potential career paths. By adequately preparing for and actively engaging in their work placements, students can make the most of this experience and set themselves up for future success.
Preparation is Key
To make the most of their work experience, Year 10 students should start by researching different industries and companies that align with their interests. This allows them to find placements that match their career aspirations. Students should also familiarize themselves with the organisation they will be working for, understanding its values, mission, and culture. By preparing a list of questions and researching the role they will be assigned, students can demonstrate enthusiasm and engage more effectively during their placement.
Active Engagement
During their work experience, students should adopt a proactive approach by actively seeking opportunities to learn and contribute. They should ask questions, seek feedback, and demonstrate a willingness to take on tasks and responsibilities. By observing and learning from experienced professionals, students can develop industry-specific skills and gain a deeper understanding of workplace dynamics. Taking notes and reflecting on their experiences will further enhance their learning and ensure a more comprehensive understanding of the industry.
Building Professional Networks
Work experience is an excellent opportunity for Year 10 students to start building professional networks. Students should make an effort to connect with colleagues and supervisors, seeking opportunities to shadow or learn from them. Maintaining professional relationships can lead to future mentorship, internship opportunities, or even job prospects.
Year 10 work experience offers invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. By adequately preparing, actively engaging, and building professional networks, students can make the most of this experience. This will not only provide them with a greater understanding of their chosen career paths but also set them on the path to success in the future.

The past two weeks have seen many new books processed for our Library. The Barrington Stokes books are all on display on the end wall of the Library. It is a lovely collection of fiction for our younger readers. From this collection, I read The White Fox by Jackie Morris. This is a tender story of a boy exploring his cultural heritage in the far north of America. I highly recommend the book to our students. We have also had a wonderful donation of fiction and nonfiction donated by Joan Karmelita. Retired from teaching and moving to Melbourne, she generously gave us the benefit of her extensive library. Added to this was a delivery of recently published young adult fiction. These new books are on display in the library. Library extra-curricular activities are humming along. Our first Book
Club met on Wednesday afternoon last week. Lego Club is kept busy with the Millennium Falcon and Homework Club seems to have record numbers of attendees. This is a very busy time of the year. Heading into the examinations the Library is now open for extended hours on specific days for Year 12 students. Subject teachers are available to help students with revision and are running seminars.
Together, let us read.

2023 Anglicare WA Ambassador Advocacy Masterclass
ACC Junior Girls Basketball
Have you ever seen someone in need and thought, “I don’t know how to help them, but I want to do something”? Has your passion for supporting others been thwarted by a lack of time or resources? When it comes to speaking up for the vulnerable, have you felt like a lone voice in a sea of dissenters?
The 2023 St George’s Anglicare Ambassadors joined with other Anglican schools’ Ambassadors, at Hale School, to participate in the Anglicare WA 2023 Advocacy Masterclass. During this seminar students learnt about the challenges facing advocates, the various types of advocacies, what it means to be an ally and how to take practical steps forward in the fight against injustices.
Lots of lessons were learnt and together they will now work to see how they can advocate for the injustices in the world around them and around us here at St George’s.

The Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) Basketball Championship opens the door for ACC schools to play alternative schools out of our geographically placed sub-associations.
This is the first year that we have competed in both the boys and girls competitions. To advance to the knock out Championship the team needed to finish in the top two of their allocated rounds.
I am pleased to report that our Junior Girls Years 7-9 Basketball team made it through to the elimination rounds. They went on to win the 16-round elimination beating Chisholm Catholic College in a nail biting 27-26 thriller. This win put us through to the Quarter Finals where we sadly lost to Kennedy Baptist College.
Congratulations to the team, your coaches – Mr Quan and Mr Sloan - are super proud of your achievement and efforts.

Co3 CONNECT Residency Program - Year 10 Dance
Year 11 Geography Excursion
As of Week 2 this term, the Year 10 dance students began their residency with CO3 which will see them participate in contemporary dance workshops for the next seven weeks. This is an incredible opportunity for our students to explore their creativity, learn new skills, and improve their physical fitness and dance routines.
CO3 is a contemporary dance company based in Western Australia. They are committed to promoting contemporary dance as an art form and engaging with the community through dance education programs. The workshops will be led by CO3’s experienced and passionate dance instructors, who will introduce the students to contemporary dance techniques and choreography.
Our Year 11 Geography students recently visited ‘Nearer to Nature’ in Mundaring for an insightful excursion. Led by a parks and wildlife expert, we embarked on a tour of the bushland, learning about prescribed burning as a bushfire mitigation strategy. The excursion included hands-on fieldwork, where we engaged in a fire mapping exercise, and an in-depth presentation on the causes and impacts of the 2021 Wooroloo bushfire. This excursion provided valuable knowledge for the students and fostered a deeper understanding of fire management and its effects on our environment and communities.
Over the course of the next seven weeks, the students will participate in weekly workshops where they will learn about the fundamentals of contemporary dance, including balance, alignment, and the fluidity of movement. They will also have the opportunity to work on their own choreography, creating their own dance pieces under the watchful eye, expertise and guidance of the talented CO3’s instructors.
We are excited to see our students embrace this opportunity and look forward to seeing the results of their hard work and endeavours at the end of term.
Miss Jessica McGaw Drama and Dance Coordinator
During the excursion, students explored the bushland under the guidance of a parks and wildlife leader, gaining insights into the importance of prescribed burning for bushfire prevention. The hands-on fieldwork, included a fire mapping exercise, allowed us to comprehend fire behaviour and the significance of accurate fire mapping activities in emergency planning. The excursion was both informative and insightful as well as being a beautiful day to be out in nature.
