February 7: The Challenges Facing the New Chair of the Federal Reserve System

Robert Heller, Former Governor of the Federal Reserve System, CEO of VISA, Yachtsman, Author Jerome Powell is scheduled to take the reigns as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board on February 1. What are the challenges confronting him and his team? Bob Heller will analyze the impact of the new tax legislation and the Fed’s proposed “normalization” of monetary policy on the booming economy. Will economic growth continue? Is inflation likely to return? What impact might deregulation have? Bob’s impressive career includes serving on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and as President and CEO of VISA U.S.A. The author of seven books on international economics and finance, including his autobiography, The Unlikely Governor, Bob provides frequent commentary on CNBC. He also is a Staff Commodore of The San Francisco Yacht Club.

February 14: America’s Cup Update—What’s Next and New for the Oldest Game in Sport? Tom Ehman, StFYC Member; Veteran of Twelve AC Campaigns; Founder and Editor of Sailing Illustrated On this day in 2010, in Valencia, Spain, the Golden Gate Yacht Club's Oracle Team USA won the America's Cup over Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss team Alinghi. That was Larry Ellison's third, San Francisco’s sixth and StFYC member Tom Ehman’s eleventh campaign for the Auld Mug. In addition to serving as head of External Affairs for Mr. Ellison’s teams, and Rules Advisor for Paul Cayard's AmericaOne campaign, Tom’s been an important part of eight other Cup campaigns. He is uniquely qualified to provide the latest news, valuable insight and insider predictions about the 2021 America’s Cup in New Zealand. Tom, will the Kiwi’s 75ft foiling-monohulls fly over the water at 60 knots?

February 21: Why We Dynamited the Junior Program and are Not Looking Back Kimball Livingston, Staff Commodore, 2018 Chair of the StFYC Junior Committee

The Coach: “Commodore, we have a problem.” The Commodore: “Explain. I’ll see what I can do.” From that beginning, a certain Staff Commodore went on to shake up youth sailing on SF Bay, blow up StFYC youth sailing per the advice of our coaches, and become the 2018 chair of the Junior Committee. You break it, you bought it. But why did youth sailing change dramatically in a single generation? Why is the StFYC experience relevant nationally, and why are we involved in an attempt to reset standards for sail training instruction? And is there a mysterious “other” WYL bell? Kimball will explain. He eats this stuff for breakfast.

February 28: Exploring Maritime Art through the Life & Work of John Steven Dews

John Steven Dews (via Skype from New Zealand) and Zachary Hall, Director, Trinity House Paintings John is both a successful maritime artist and experienced yachtsman. Born in England in 1949, Dews lives, works and sails in New Zealand. Learn how a master approaches his work by combining his lifelong passions for painting and sailing. Dews’ first U.S. exhibition was in San Francisco and was completely sold-out. Dews has created portraits of yachts for owners worldwide, including StFYC's Tom Perkins. Zachary Hall has 10 years of premier art gallery and auction house experience. He earned a Masters in History from John Carroll University, where he rowed varsity for four years and was team captain. Several of Dews’ paintings will be on exhibition in the Ward Room of StFYC from February 26 through March 6.

March 7: Swimming from Catalina to the Mainland and More Night Train Adventures David Holscher, Ocean Swimming Champion and President, Night Train Swimming Team David will describe his swim from Catalina Island to the California mainland and other recent and daring ocean swimming adventures. Founded in 2008, Night Train Swimmers is a 501(c) (3) Foundation with a membership of over 40 open-water swimmers, ranging in skill from amateur to Olympic Gold Medalists. Under the watchful eye of Night Train Co-Founder and Coach Vito Bialla, the team has set multiple world records, including the current world record for the Longest Swimming Relay. Using their non-profit platform, they have raised over $1.5 million for multiple causes and organizations, including Semper Fi, The Lighthouse Foundation, Reed School District and Baykeeper. They have also taught over 300 underprivileged kids how to swim and be water safe.
