Ok, so now we’ve got that out of the way, what’s next? Let’s just elaborate a little on the 3 main reasons you want a business of your own. 1. Low Start Up Costs Unlike many ‘other’ businesses in the conventional sense, it takes very little money to get you started in the Business model I will share with you - let’s call it the ‘At Last’ model since I believe it was my ‘At Last’ moment when I discovered these secrets and I don’t just want to call it an ‘Internet business’ and I’ll explain why later. All you need is some imagination, internet access, a Domain name and hosting. That shouldn’t cost you much and I’ll give you some pointers on that later.

2. Choose your own hours Who says you have to be at your desk every morning at 9.00 a.m.? and stay there until 5.00 p.m. until you’re ‘allowed’ to go home...

With your own business working from home using the internet as one of your tools, you choose when you start to work and when you stop. You can work whenever you want because YOU are the Boss!

And Guess What?…..you’ll probably work longer than you thought possible because you’re working for yourself sometimes it’s not really work though when you’re ‘doing it’ for yourself….

3. Choose where you work from When you put your computer to work it doesn’t matter where you are, in fact you can be anywhere on the planet, any beach you want, any beautiful place you want to be and if you consider the travelling that some people have to endure every day before they even reach their place of work you’ll possibly be saving more than 2-4 hours per day by only commuting to your kitchen table or spare room….and if that’s a one bed flat at the moment - that’s fine. Say we take a conservative figure of 2 hours per day x 5 days per week x 48 weeks (four weeks holiday? - make it 5. ) 52 weeks less 5 = 47 weeks x 5 days x 2 hours = 470 hours, that’s nearly 20 days a year…wow! With the Internet as a business tool - the whole world is your market! By sitting in front of your computer, everyone in the world is now within your reach allowing you the time to achieve more and more. You can use the Internet as ‘a business tool’and although I don’t really like the term - ‘Internet Business’ since it is not clear enough to anybody when someone says “I’ve got an internet business” and it sometimes conjures up the wrong impression of what you do. This is a real and ethical business not to be confused with any dodgy dealings.

You can fully automate your online business and no longer have to work 8 hours plus per day. Once you automate your business, you can use the time saved to do it all over again with another project or interest, improve your existing business or spend the time however you like. So there’s absolutely no need to be spending all your precious time glued to the computer screen. Spend more time with friends and family Owning your business is a bit like owning your time and gives you the privilege to have more time to spend with your family, watching the kids grow up and attending the school events along with being able to see the older generation in your family when you want to and not just when you’re not working for the ‘slave master’, your employer. I’m not saying that employers are bad at all - it’s just that many of them appear to ‘own’ your time, and for some, ‘your life’ Some people are happy with a JOB (Just Over Broke) and need an employer to ‘look after them’ and that’s good for them. Some people crave to leave their employer and to start their own business and that’s good for them.

We’re all different!

Your business can be all about your hobbies and passions Now, this is my favourite reason for anybody wanting to start a business. An online business allows your passions and dreams to come alive and you can start this with very low operational expenses so rest assured you won’t find me recommending products or services that cost thousands of pounds or dollars. I should let you know at this point that mentioning $$ dollars should not put you off…as if it’s ‘an American thing’…just because I’m in the UK, I really don’t mind collecting dollars as well as pounds, and euros etc…it’s just a fact that when you have a World Wide Web as your market place, you will get interest from around the world and the US Dollar is the currency of the WWW.

The internet is a huge market and it’s getting bigger every day! According to the Computer Industry Almanac, there were 934 million internet users in 2009...we’re now well above the 1 billion stage. Now, is there any doubt that this is an attractive pool of people to target?

You may be a bit confused by some of the buzz words like, Domain name, web browser, web hosting, auto responders, URL, ftp and html…but don’t let yourself get bogged down in that. There’s plenty of information on what these are within the pages of our Training Package. My job is to let you know what to do with them rather than what they are. When identifying a need, carrying out market research is part of your homework. One of your first steps should be to find out what is it that people are already looking for? Competition - have a look at what other existing businesses are providing. Customers - have a look to see what people are searching for on Google. Write all your ideas down in your Business Book - don’t try to keep it all in your head, you’ll get dizzy and fall down…

Write it all down, score things out, scribble and re-write again until you have a clear picture. Don’t become frustrated with the time it takes to get a focus on your picture. I might be a bit blurred at first but with more scribbles and re-writing it will become clearer so take your time and do some thorough market research on the internet. It’s better than jumping in with both feet before you’re ready. All that will do is result in a failed project and it won’t inspire you to continue. Another thought you need to have is….. ‘Do I have a product or service already that I could take to the marketplace?’ If you don’t have a product - you don’t have to make one before you can start. If you’re worried that you don’t have a product to sell then don’t be. Many marketers, including myself, started without a product of their own - they just got a hold of someone else’s - quite legally I may add. Quite simply, you can become an ‘Affiliate’ for another company and start earning commissions by advertising their products, for example, you can get an affiliate account for free

with many existing companies like Amazon, Argos, Staples and even Sainsbury’s have an affiliate opportunity. Have a look at www.associateprograms.com

With a couple of hours research on the internet you’ll find a vast array of possibilities, like – ‘Improve your golf scores’ – Full Resale rights, ‘1000 Atkins Diet Recipes’ – Full Reprint Rights, and many more. You can also have a look at www.clickbank.com for an endless supply of affiliate possibilities but beware of the quality of some of the products available and do your own research avoiding the offers of 50,000 files on a CD for £1.99. Now that I’ve mentioned Clickbank, I wanted to let you know how important it is for you to be able to take Credit Card payments from your customers – many of you may be familiar with PayPal and NoChex, World Pay and some others. To some of you however, this might conjure up no end of stressful thoughts and scenarios of ‘what if this and that’. Do not worry about this – it’s very straight forward. My recommendation is that you go to www.paypal.co.uk and set up an account now, if you do not already have one.

Of course PayPal.com is available for other countries outside of the UK. Along with Affiliate Programs you can also purchase the Resell Rights to someone else’s product and start selling that.

All you would have to do is buy the resell rights to an Information product, download it to your computer and then personalise it, upload it to your own website and sell it!

All that could be done within a couple of hours from the comfort of your pyjamas sitting on the end of your bed with your laptop. I hope that this is Good News for you - so you don’t need to be worrying about creating a product first before you get started. You can create your own product later and I’ll give you more information on that later.

Your Online Business Model? The next thing to do is to choose the right Business Model for you. The Business Model has to be right for the type of business you are going in to or the service you are going to offer. When choosing you need to take the following factors into consideration. Marketing - how am I going to and what will it cost? Income - how much will I charge for my product or service? Profit Margin - obviously you want to make as high a profit as you can. Delivery - can the product or service be easily delivered to your customers? Identify your target market - as I mentioned before, make a search on Google with key words that people may use to search for you, and then you’ll see what interest there is in your kind of product on websites, blogs, discussion forums etc

Now that you’ve learned what a Domain name is, you should get one. You can buy a domain name for a few pounds / dollars. I have some that I’ve bought for only £5 - £8 and that means it’s mine for two years (all you have to do at the end of the two years is renew it again for a similar low price) I would strongly recommend that you buy a ‘your name’ domain as well as ‘yourbuisnessname.com’ like www.johnsmith.co.uk and if you can’t get that one go for some kind of variation of your name. It’ll come in useful. So, in your Business Book, you need to write down all the key words you would associate with your business. Say you were selling ‘garden gnomes’ for example…then you would make a list of words like ... Gnomes, garden ornaments, features, sculpture, three wise gnomes..etc until you come up with a name that best represents you and what you offer. You want your domain name to be short, simple, no hyphen in between words if possible - make a list of 100 words and keep them because they will become valuable ‘keywords’ for you to use in the future. When you’ve finished ‘brainstorming’, preferably with a friend to help you think of words you’ll probably come up with a domain name preference like www.GnomesRus.com…

Next you need to check to see if that domain is available and remember; it’s often the case that the best ones have been taken but not to worry because with some artistic licence you will come up with a great one. It may be that you need to adjust GnomesRus.com to .org, or .co.uk… there’s lots of opportunity left to get what you’re going to be happy with. Ok, to check to see if your preferred domain name is available I tend to go to www.virualnames.co.uk it’s just one I’ve used for years and it works for me. You can also try www.123reg.co.uk You just type in your domain name into their search box and they will show you which variations of your name are taken and which ones are available. In general the best ones with .com are a bit more expensive than the one that end .uk.org….or .tv I believe that if you’re marketing in the UK it’s good to have a www.name.co.uk if it’s in Belgium go for a .be or France .fr..USA.. go for .us

Finding a Web Hosting Service The next step is to find a Web host to host your domain name. Now that’s where it starts to get a bit too techie and scary for some people. It needn’t - there’s no real difficulty in setting this up - if I can do it, so can you.

However, in this book I wanted to help you set up a business using the internet as easily as possible so I’m going to miss out the ‘hosting’ bit on this occasion and take you straight into a self hosting situation created by Google- for FREE! First Stop for a website - type this address into your computer https://sites.google.com/

This is a fabulous site that can provide you with a free website and hosting and much more. Another great feature is that you can have a website in a number of different languages should you wish. The country options include France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico and of course all the English speaking counties. Wow…that’s another sigh of relief. I’m not saying that you should not be investing in your business and that’ll come later. I’m just trying to get you up and running without going to the many expenses some people do to have a glossy website. I know a lady who paid £5000 to have a website built for her, so there’s a saving for you already. Ok, so now you’re building your own personalised website and it couldn’t be easier on the site I just gave you. You have a website showing off your product with pictures, descriptions and a ‘Buy-Now’ button underneath, maybe an ‘Add to Cart’ button - this is all very easy to do and I can help you with that.

The next thing you have to do is invite people to visit your site to ‘have a look’ and this is only possible through advertising. How can I Advertise? 1. Advertise in your local Newspaper I wouldn’t recommend this method in the beginning since it can be quite expensive with little or no return for your money. National newspapers can be more effective but they will be even more expensive until you learn the art of placing an ad. I’d put this on hold until you investigate all of the other methods first. However, have a look at www.mediauk.com to see if you can get any free publicity instead by writing an article for a magazine or newspaper.

2. Write sales copy that gets results! Your website is your sales letter and not a brochure so you don’t want to clutter it up with lots of product when you’re selling a product through a sales letter method. Too many products in one site can lead to distraction and with it indecision.

The Sales Letter method of advertising is quite simple. You create a Sales Letter and send it out to a ‘hungry market’, people who are looking for your product and I’ll talk about the hungry market later. So you send out your letter in an envelope to say 1000 people and what does that letter do? It invites the recipient to gather more information about your product… on your website. When a prospective customer arrives at your website they will be given loads of information about your product and many reasons why they should buy from you - today! Sales Copy is a whole separate week-end Master class? Yes and No... Yes there’s a load of information about how to construct a ‘Sales Letter’ and there are many people in the market place that will do this for you. I’m a great believer in doing what you do and letting others do for you what you cannot do but would like.... I know it’s hard! Because we all think we can do it better anyway... It’s a bit like decorating, we all think we can do it, maybe a bit like all of the DIY culture – truth is we do a mediocre job and get by? The truth is, if you’d like to take this on board – don’t spend too much of your time trying to work out how this, that and the next thing works.

The point I’m trying to get to, and perhaps it’s premature, is this – Don’t spend a lot of time doing stuff that you can get other people to do for you – obviously for a fee. I’ll expand on this later.

3. Publish your own Newsletter You can start your own newsletter about the product you’re selling and with the Internet as a medium to deliver it you can send it out to a list or post it as a Blog. Now, rules do apply to Blogging and there’s a whole extra book on this but I’ll give you more information on that later. 4. Write a Book..... more on that later (Public Domain)

5. Google Adwords Now this is a method that many online marketers use and there’s a full training on this available but simply put you pay Google to put your website on the internet in prominent places so lots of people will see it. You can set your daily budget at a level you can afford so you won’t end up in debt.

Google provide loads of information and online tutorials to guide you and I will point you in the direction of more training later. 6. Lots of other variations of the above and my advice is to avoid any activities that take up vast amounts of your time.

Whatever method of advertising you use your message should be governed by the ‘Rule of AIDA’ Your advertising must first attract the ATTENTION of your prospects in a specific way. Your advertising must then INTEREST your prospect in a very precise way. Your advertising must cause your prospect to DESIRE the product or at least DESIRE more information. Your advertising must indicate what ACTION your prospect must take next. It’s a call to Action. So why not have a look in the Yellow Pages or your local newspaper to see if AIDA is being used there?

Create promotions, websites, and marketing material to reach targeted group

Now it’s time to explain your ‘Staircase to Heaven’ We have a kind of sequence of events as part of our Marketing Strategy and it’s important that you grasp this part of the formula – Free giveaway - low cost front-end product to backend products. This is in effect a kind of ‘stairway to heaven’ - if you imagine at the bottom of the steps is the free giveaway – perhaps a download or free CD in the post. Then, as you build a relationship with your customer and they start to trust you and your quality product, you can offer them the opportunity to look at another of your products and/or services and these can range from low cost to high cost as they go up the staircase so at the bottom is a free giveaway and at

the very top may be a personal one to one consultation with a variety of products and services in between. This is the bigger picture of Customer Care and your Financial Success. Where some companies simply depend on finding new customers – we concentrate on finding new customers AND keeping them. It is a known fact that it is more expensive to keep looking for new customers than it is to look after the one’s you already have and focus on repeat customers who will buy from you many times over.

So, picture this staircase as your sales flow chart – on the bottom step you get your first sale… now this may not actually be a sale but it will be a ‘lead’ – it could be a Free Report that you are giving away to people who have shown an interest in your product. In fact if this is a sale, it should be a low cost sale, what we call a ‘front-end’ product and it’s not something that you are expecting to make a high profit on. It’s function is to help you build up a list of prospects – possible customers of the future.

As your prospects/customers go up the stairs they are offered another product to compliment anything that they have previously purchased. This ‘higher’ product will command a higher price but a very good value price to temp them to move up the staircase. This continues so that each stair or step has a product on it ranging from FREE at the bottom to say £9.97 on the next, perhaps further up there’s a £49.97 product, then a £127.97, a £397, £597, £1200 all the way up to a £5000 and above – of course you may be marketing in $$ , Euros too. You will have customers on various levels on your staircase.

To turn this on it’s head, some marketers refer to this system as a Funnel System which is as it says a funnel, wide at the top and getting narrower as it goes down the funnel

All your products are in the funnel with the low cost or even free products at the top. As your prospects flow down

the funnel the products have a higher value and of course you have a high percentage of people coming into the top of the funnel and that percentage will drop as they go down, however you income will go up since the product values are higher. Is it better to sell 100 items @ £10 with 100 customers to care for …or 10 items @ £500? What you will get is a mixture of both I hope that this is all making sense to you. I imagine that by now you may be getting a little excited about the possibilities of having your own thriving business?

Niche Marketing! So now that you’ve come this far you might want some business ideas to help you decide what it is you would like to do? We have many people in this ‘niche’ marketing business and the great thing about it is that when you create your product for your niche market it is exclusively yours. Yes, there might be someone else marketing their product which is similar to yours but it is not the same as yours - take Weight Loss for example. You know as well as I, that there must be thousands of weight loss products and services on the market today at any one time. Yet there’s new websites, ideas, products and diets coming from every corner of the globe, every day. Is the market saturated? I don’t think so. Please pardon the pun, but there’s a ‘hungry market’ out there looking for the answer. They are looking for an ‘Answer’ to their ‘problem’ or ‘question’. Now that’s where you come in and that’s what our business is all about - it’s about niche marketing - providing a solution to the markets ‘challenges’, answers to their questions. You may be quite surprised to know that there are hundreds and thousands of niche markets around the UK and the world

and with the internet as a tool the world becomes your market place. - Things like ‘Quilting’ - it’s huge in the USA and here in the UK. It’s a big business with quilts being made at home by people to give to relations as gifts, there’s no end of patterns and tips on this subject but if you’d asked me last year about quilting, I would not have been able to tell you anything about it. I know someone whose friend is a marine biologist and has an interest in fish - together they have developed a business around that niche of people who keep fish in a tank at home the goldfish bowl type thing but on a higher level - have you seen those fancy restaurants with the exotic fish in huge tanks? Well, these restaurants will need some help and guidance on how to look after the fish, the tanks and all the equipment that’s required to keep the fish healthy. So that’s a niche. The same man has a passion for the Aston Martin motor car but not just any old Aston Martin, it has to be a certain model and a certain colour and that’s the kind of thing that drills a general business down to a niche business. Suppose you are a Gardener, thinking, ‘how could I use this ‘At last’ approach to developing my gardening business?’ Well, let’s have a look. I need to ‘niche’ my gardening business in some way to make me more of a unique attraction to my existing customers and to the wider public at large - what can I do to drill down to a niche - or maybe more than one niche.

You see you are not limited to having only one business as you would be in the conventional market place. Let’s face it, if you were a Gardener and had a dozen customers to look after, that would probably be enough to take up all of your time. With our approach, you do not have to limit yourself to just one business. So, to get back to the job in hand - Gardener to niche Gardener? Let’s assume that as a Gardener you are undertaking routing maintenance to a dozen customer’s gardens in your local area let’s make that two dozen. So you have 24 customers paying you X amount per hour every week or month for your services. We’ll call this commitment 12 customers per week, 6 days a week = 2 per day. That is really all one person could cope with unless you want to be in the business of employing other gardeners and build a team and then a Landscaping Company with Pay & Conditions, Pensions, Sickness, and Bonuses etc to think about? Maybe you could then think, how could I customise my gardening service from a general service to more of a niche service?

I can continue to service my existing customer base and develop my niche at the same time. Unless you’re charging £100+ per hour = 40 hours per week, let’s add day 6 and maybe some evenings in the summer. That be around 55 hours per week at £100 per hour = £5500, it’s difficult to make a fortune by proving a service. The real money is in providing a ‘Product’ - especially a product with a high perceived value. Now, perceived value is the key here and I’d like to expand on that for you. When you sell your time and expertise for money, there’s a limit - not on your expertise but on your time - we all have only 24 hours per day and most of us spend a third of that sleeping which leaves us with 16 hours and even with the best will and work ethic in the world you will need some time to brush your teeth so you will only have about 8 - 10 hours per day to sell for money. Now, the other way to work is not to sell your time for money but to sell your expertise for money - your expertise, as a product, can be created once and sold to many - I’ll say that again, created once and sold to many. I hope that this is getting your juices flowing, the old grey matter working and your heart a pumping because this may be the most exciting thing you’ve thought about for some time!

So, here we are - Gardener looking at becoming Niche Marketer…. Where do we go from here…I suggest to take a piece of A4 paper, once again, as I ask in the recordings - fold it in half or in three, it’s up to you. Now, in the left hand column or area of your paper list the things you do on a regular basis for your gardening clients things like  Grass cutting  Shrub bed maintenance  Pruning Ok, that’s a few common or garden tasks, if you like. On the right hand side of your page list some ideas on how you could niche this down to a product or service with a higher perceived value. For example: take the list and look at it from another angle.  Grass cutting  Shrub bed maintenance  Pruning  Planting*  Fencing*  Weeding  Decking*  Ponds*  Rain water harvesting*

 Sustainability*  Slabs The tasks that I have highlighted have now become niche ‘items’ or even ‘products’ for example could you supply the plants/decking/ponds/ etc which you buy at wholesale and sell at retail? Could you sell a rain water butt to your existing customer rather than him or her going to a superstore to get one?….. Ok, we haven’t really got to the niche yet but we’re getting there. Ask yourself this – ‘What’s, not only fashionable in ‘Gardening’ but, becoming a trend that will probably be here for some time?’ Maybe it’s all about ‘sustainability’ ‘recycling’ etc… perhaps this is where your niche may come from. Don’t try to invent something new either, this is not about becoming a pioneer although if you do have a new product idea, that’s fine too but what you want to do is provide your customers with the things that they are already looking for. How do you find out what people are looking for?

So, just imagine if you were a retired Teacher or Banker, maybe a Butcher, a Baker or Candlestick maker…. (I know) Whatever you’re past experience or profession, imagine how much information you have gathered over the years and people have an insatiable appetite for information. If you could collate this as an Information Product and had a passion for making this available to others, you could make a fortune. As another example Suppose you are, at present, qualified in Human Resources or maybe you have a Legal qualification. You may be frustrated with your situation but you don’t want to throw away all that you’ve learned so far- you simply want to diversify, perhaps into to unknown waters but are unsure of the outcome. For example, say you had a business offering a select, high quality, discreet service for those people or employers wishing to …make a will, or investigate and employee’s unusual behavior, advise on redundancy or just how to deal with a certain situation - would you be more than qualified and able to provide such a service? You could just specialise in a couple of particularly ‘difficult’ subject areas that have a high perceived value and leave the general work to the market place. I think that the drilling down is a stumbling block for many people but once you get into the idea of making a list and reducing that to some of the more basic elements, I think you may surprise yourself by just how qualified you are to start your own business - working from home. Of course, I’m sure you’ve heard people talk of all the difficulties they’ve had ‘keeping the books’ or calculating the vat, dealing with refunds etc and just how difficult it is to work for yourself – it’s just an excuse often used by people who would rather stay in their comfort zone. With your own business from home, there’s no need to be concerned with those things - we have a great accountant Rob Sherwood, ‘Tax without Tears’ and I can recommend his company should you need to organise your book keeping.

My late Auntie Nettie was great at making ‘Crispies’ they were a kind of biscuit made by mixing Kellogg’s rice crispies with sugar and honey and ended up as a tea time treat. Public Domain Products I just wanted to touch on the subject of Public Domain products which I found fascinating. Of course you will find no end of information about this on the internet but my first experience of it was at www.gutenberg.org Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related technologies today. Their books are free in the United States because their copyright has expired. They may not be free in other countries so readers outside of the United States must check the copyright laws of their countries before downloading or redistributing the ebooks but the bottom line is that you can acquire certain publications pre 1920, rebrand and redistribute them as your own This subject is worthy of further study if you are interested in it.

Introduction Hello and Welcome to this guide to Kunaki and may I take this opportunity to give you a brief background to my own personal experiences of sound recording. I’ve been around the block a few times and thought that I was pretty switched on to all the available recording devices but was quite amazed when I discovered the Kunaki experience. As a child I used to play around with an old Peto Scott reel to reel audio recorder. I guess you’d only see one of them now if you visited a specialist museum but my Dad gave it to me when I was about eight years old. I used to record conversations and the odd song by my Grandfather and I still have these reels of tape in a box somewhere in my attic. As I progressed into the age of cassette tape recorder I used to play my guitar and sing into the reel to reel, then play back the tape whilst recording and singing along into my cassette recording attempting to sing harmony with myself... However, to cut a long story short, I then moved on to a twin cassette deck and finally a Tascam mini studio, so you can imagine my surprise when I was introduced to both Audacity and Kunaki. Not only could I improve my recordings I could copy them, label them and duplicate in CD or DVD format and package them up in glossy labels wrapped with cellophane from the comfort of my home. I should here that previous to

being introduced to Kunaki, I had never saved anything to a disc let alone ‘burn’ files to a disc so this was brand new to me and if I can do it?...anyone can do it!

What is Kunaki?

You design and configure your own product (case, disc, inserts, cover art, contents) with Kunaki publishing software. The software renders a precise 3-D replica of your product and lets you modify and review different possibilities. The software compiles your product's content, packaging, art-work into a single digital file and uploads it to their facility. Then a seamless, automated system accepts orders; manufactures, prints, assembles, packages, wraps, and ships your product in minutes.

The most recent project I have undertaken is to transfer my Grandad’s music from the old 78 rpm records to CD. Although my first attempts were not successful, I persevered and learnt through trial and error how do make this work so I thought it would be useful to share my experiences with you so you don’t have to waste as much time as I did in the beginning. Once I had dug out the old 78’s from my attic I found a local enthusiast who had the equipment to help me get started. It

was quite simple. He had an old record player with the specific ‘needle’ required to play a 78 and he recorded the music onto his computer through a microphone and then burnt it onto a disc for me. That was the part I had imagined to be the most difficult. However, he was happy to help and now I had the music in mp3 format. The next part took me some time as you need to log onto www.kunaki.com and create the text, titles and cover photographs etc and then you need to upload the files from your PC to the Kunaki system. The great thing about Kunaki is that it’s pretty fool proof and you can choose photographs from their stock library or upload one of you own. The cover photograph and text reappears on the disc too so you may have to try a few different images and text. Amazingly you can also click on the Jewel Case or DVD Case to rotate the box so you can see the spine, the inside and the back cover too. Once you are happy with the image and the files you must upload to Kunaki from your PC, from the master copy on CD, not from a saved file – it has to be from the CD. I tried a few times to master this but each time I left the system to upload, it stalled at 70%, the at 82% and I could not figure out why? Finally I realised that I had not formatted my original disc properly. I had opted for the Quick Format option instead of

the full format option – However, I finally realised my mistake and eventually my music was uploaded and saved to the system for the next step. At this stage it’s best to click the ‘test’ option since some distortion can occur during upload and once you are sure everything is working 100% you can click the ‘publish’ button. I was blown away when I realised that not only do Kunaki publish your product CD, they also give you a website that you can use to sell it using PayPal or Credit Card. Visitors to your site can view the CD including the rotate options and order it there and then. You can set the retail price of your CD and use the link on your own homepages too. I was so excited to receive a copy of my CD, I ordered one immediately and then realised yet another amazing fact about Kunaki – you don’t have to order and pay for your own copy, Kunaki will send you a FREE copy.

I went on to send some photographs to the Orkney Communities website and mentioned, in their discussion forum, the fact that I had now created a disc of Orkney music including the tunes my Grandad wrote. I included a photograph of the band members he played with.

This included a singer called Tom Bain who is standing in middle at the back and one of his relatives emailed me to ask if I could send her a copy of Tom singing...and so, below is my latest creation which I sold and made a profit!

Whilst investigating this business opportunity and experimenting with Kunaki, I have started work on another

project involving weight loss. I purchased the resale rights to a number of Hypnosis products and decided to focus on the weight loss and the reasons behind the weight gain in the first place. This product has evolved into Weightloss Plus which is a now combination of 6 hypnosis CDs addressing weight, stress and confidence management. Included in the package are a number of extra bonuses such as weight loss tips, low calorie recipes, lifestyle management and help and how to information for subscribers.

This project started off as data files saved to a CD but I soon realised that end users preferred to simply put the disc into a CD player as opposed to opening mp3 files on their PC. I therefore redeveloped this one disc into a six CD audio set.

There’s still a lot to do with regards to product development and at one stage I thought the image above was my end product. However, this was not to be and as I shared this product with other business mentors, it became apparent that I had not yet fully thought it through.

hinges broke off years ago? Well, there’s a good point – so I have now replaced this with a more robust DVD case. It’s not only more robust but bigger and allows more space for marketing text and it does seem to have more of a Wow Factor and perceived value. So this is my next stage in product design...

Do I retain copyright to my product? Yes, you retain full copyright to your product. More information about registering your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office is available (appendix 4). Does Kunaki offer their manufacturing and fulfilment service as an XML web service? Yes, you can integrate the manufacturing and fulfilment service directly into your own application. Does Kunaki offer volume discounts for large orders? No. Kunaki does not offer discounts and does not negotiate special deals. Kunaki does not respond to "requests for a quote" and does not bid on jobs.

Appendix 1 UPC bar code The Kunaki CD / DVD publishing software can add a Kunaki UPC bar code to your product. There is no fee for the bar code. You can add your own bar code or not use a bar code. Many retail outlets, like Amazon.com and CD Baby, require a UPC bar code. Please note the following regarding the Kunaki bar code: 

If you select to use a Kunaki UPC bar code, the Kunaki software will place the bar code automatically on the bottom, right hand side of the back of the jewel or DVD case. You cannot change the location of the bar code. The publishing software shows you where the bar code is placed on your case. You cannot add a Kunaki bar code for an existing published product. You will have to create a new product. You cannot transfer an existing bar code to a new product. Each product is issued a new bar code with a unique UPC number. You cannot use a Kunaki bar code for

products not manufactured by Kunaki. If you use your own UPC bar code you will need to embed your own bar code into your package design.

Appendix 2

CD Baby CD Baby is an online record store that sells CDs by independent musicians. They can help you sell your CD. They are the largest seller of independent CDs on the web. After you set up an account with them you can use Kunaki to manufacture and drop-ship your CDs directly to CD Baby. We can drop-ship any quantity.

Amazon Amazon's Advantage program lets you work directly with the Internet's leading retailer to market your CD and DVD products to customers. It's simple and easy to apply. You submit one or

more titles for consideration. If your application is approved, you simply list your products, provide descriptive content, and ship units to the Amazon warehouse. When customers purchase your titles, Amazon processes orders within 24 hours. Amazon monitors your inventory and sends you an e-mail request for additional copies based on customer demand. There is an annual fee of $29.95 and Amazon's commission rates are 55%. In addition to Amazon.com, your products will automatically be available on other major web sites, including: Borders.com, CDnow.com, Target.com, VirginMega.com and Waldenbooks.com. Please familiarize yourself with all the rules. For example, your product will require a UPC bar code placed on the bottom right hand corner of the back of the product. Products also need to be cellophane wrapped. Products manufactured by Kunaki are retail ready for Amazon's Advantage program. Kunaki also offers a free UPC bar code which is printed in the correct area of the product. You can use Kunaki to manufacture and drop-ship to Amazon to restock your Amazon inventory when needed.

Appendix 3

XML Web Service for CD / DVD Manufacturing and Fulfilment The XML Web service is an alternative to the product sales pages and allows distributers and publishers to send CD / DVD manufacturing and fulfilment orders to our manufacturing and fulfilment facility. The XML service is for customers with significant order flows and ability to accept credit card orders and handle customer service. Kunaki provide you with a real time accounting system that details each order with product id, quantity, date, and recipient with address.

All XML orders are designated as pending until payment is made. You can login to your Kunaki account and pay for all pending orders with your credit card or with PayPal. There are three types of requests you can make: 

Send an order to manufacture and fulfil. You send the name of the recipient and address, the desired shipping mode, the product ids and quantities. The service will respond with an order id. Retrieve the order status for an order id. You send an order id and the service will respond with an order status that lets you track the order. If the order is shipped with UPS or FedEx you also receive a shipping tracking number. The XML service cannot be used to publish new titles.
