Master Plan: Gateway Station

This studio gave a brief overview of New Urbanism principles. Given a mile-long site on the edge of Uptown Charlotte North Carolina, my project partner Ben Shenigo and I sought to define districts, each with their own distinct character, to encourage a greater sense of community. We proposed two new districts: the Stadium district to the south and North of Gateway (NoGa) to the north. The project also enhanced the existing traits of Historic Fourth Ward and Gateway Village (Johnson & Wales University area). The proposed changes were wellreceived by local city planners.

Bus stop near Mt. Moria

University Area... treelined streets, landscaped median

N. Cedar St. entirely shaded

jogging, conversing openly in public

Pocket park and covered plaza off N. Cedar St.

The odd adjacencies of an nner city church

Shows investment in the urban design of the area

Temperature must remain cooler year-round - people enjoy walking this area

Signs that people feel safe

Relief from hard urban surfaces, reduces heat island, looks nice

Paving changes when under cover

Covered sidewalks due to building setback

Covered plaza

Hotel on edge of campus, within viewing/walking distance

Solar parking meter under shade of a large tree

Permeable pavers, good or rainwater runoff

Architecture’s way of encouraging walking at an urban scale

An urban “room”?

Sign of marketdemographics research?

Technology and nature seem to be combating each other here...

Dorm has greenspace beyond passageway

W. 4th St. lacking center median

Retaining wall negotiates level difference between lots

J&W University has view of uptown

Rent-a-bike

The greenspace acts as an attractor, to draw in the wanderer

Feels less “walkable” than W. Trade St., despite being a smaller street

Edge of campus marked by retaining wall

Seems unwalkable from here

Promoting multimodal transit and healthy habits at the same time

Crape Myrtle

Overgrowth between practice field and train tracks

Path leads to creek and bridge with power lines overhead

People walking, one person with their dog, another with their child

More stadium parking and a bag-check station

City allows re-wild-ing where land is thought of as worthless?

“Unusable” land converted into parkspace

This may be a local attraction for nearby neighborhood

Parkspace has multiple uses, although parking could be elsewhere

601 Building features ircular design elements

Lights along path to Panthers Stadium use a small generator

Near Panthers Stadium... landscaped area more stadium infrastructure

Approach to Panthers Stadium has little shade until at front entrance

S. Graham St. interrupted by retaining wall

Part of style, guessing onstruction or reno occurred in 60s - 70s

Current “stadium infrastructure” is not permanent

This area may be difficult to traverse in a wheelchair

Landscaping is invested in, so lack of trees must be to maintain view?

Not exactly what you’d call “walkable”

3D brick “murals” depicting city life at Circa

Benches with no shade at Circa

Sign reads, “Additional Parking” - points to pond

Person using crosswalk, heading toward uptown

Two guys driving mopeds

One way to make the idewalk more personable

They wanted to look inviting without really being inviting?

Area not designed for water runoff, tends to pool after rain

Uptown looks distant, but ppl may be willing if they can see their destination

No need for a car when you live in the city, right?

Open space used to eparate residential and office buildings

Partial sunshade over path and benches

In Settlers Cemetery... person walking dog

Apartments/condos overlooking Settlers Cemetery

4th Ward Park... water in fountain at entrance colored

Seems to go mostly unused, might be a policy ssue

Looks like a trellis, should have plants growing on it

People seemed to be used to headstones, use graveyard as a park

At least the neighbors are quiet

Perhaps to warn homeless people not to drink/bathe

Oakland Park: GIS Study

In an elective GIS course, ArcGIS was explored as a tool for understanding Oakland Park Florida and its inhabitants. The midterm project consisted of developing several maps, some using US Census data, to describe the city. All maps and text shown were developed in ArcGIS.

WikiHouse Heron

Th i s project represents a portion of the work I completed in my diploma studio. I attempted to improve the existing WikiHouse WREN construction system by automating the design of custom components, limiting waste, and allowing formal adjustments beyond what the current system can handle. The course was sponsored by Autodesk and required a parametric architectural solution in Dynamo to a real world problem.

LOGIC DIAGRAM Dynamo generates building and individual component form and sends them to Revit and Robot for structural analysis and component size adjustment. After component design, Trunest would lay out components for CNC milling.

“The rising cost of housing coupled with population growth has created a condition where custom designed housing is no longer affordable except for the extremely wealthy. Providing open source, structurally aware, kitof-parts design tools to simplify the design and constructability of housing for the citizen sector will help meet this underserved market.
