CHAIRMAN’S REPORT RUSSELL BURTON 2011 can be described as a successful year for your network where, in line with Board objectives, we again reported a surplus amongst, arguably, the toughest market conditions our industry has known for many years. Whilst many initiatives were instigated in 2011, the highlight was the network taking control of its website. This was facilitated through our investment with long-term partner MultiArray, ensuring that the network’s online strategy - member websites that lead their local market - will continue unabated. Member feedback on the success of our online training Academy has been overwhelming, in particular, the sessions facilitated by David Knox. The Academy delivers training of the highest standard directly into member offices and, in the new world, directly to staff laptops, iPads and mobile phones. It is also fitting that I thank the many members who have freely given up their time to participate in the network’s Academy professional development sessions. It is with great enthusiasm that I announce that in 2012, nationally recognised professional development trainer Lee Woodward will be the keystone of the online Academy.

2011 saw the conclusion of the network’s branding strategy - implemented in 2009 - and the success of this initiative is evident throughout our co-operative. Although, a few members exercised their right not to participate in this network initiative, following their departure, we now showcase a united, cohesive, modern brand throughout the nation. It was with great sadness that 2011 saw the passing of former Chairman, Mike Macqueen. I had the good fortune to serve on the Board with Mike for a number of years and his experience, as a regional councillor and director for over 10 years, certainly served our co-operative very well. Mike’s passion was for First National to be the best real estate network in Australia, comprised of good real estate offices that benefited from each other’s experience and expertise. Mike’s legacy lives on with the spirit of our co-operative. The National Convention, conducted in Coolum during May, was a great success and, in conjunction with New Zealand members’ participation, was again a memorable experience. With the network celebrating its 30th anniversary throughout 2012, members can be assured that the Bali Convention will continue the tradition of an occasion ‘not to be missed’! Finally, thank you for your contribution to the network and, on behalf of your Board, we look forward to better market conditions over the coming years coupled with a year of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of First National - a remarkable achievement.

It is also opportune to acknowledge the work conducted by Regional Councils and Zones as well as the many members who contribute their time and expertise to enhance our co-operative. This work often goes unnoticed and, yet, without it, our property management, regional and commercial chapters would be non-existent. I also wish to thank my fellow directors, the chief executive and national administration staff for their efforts throughout the year. We are fortunate to have a strong operational team to support and implement board initiatives.

CHief executive’S REPORT RAY ELLIS At First National we are driven by one fundamental objective - to provide all the resources necessary for members to be leaders in their local area. This objective is also the essence of the culture and work habits within the National Office team. In conjunction with recording another financial surplus, the launch of a myriad of products and services throughout 2011 certainly saw exciting outcomes for the membership. The completion of the network’s branding strategy and the departure of a few members who did not wish to share in First National’s future enables us to be identified by consumers as a revitalised, progressive and innovative network that continues to lead the way - where the industry is heading to - not where it has been! Throughout Australia, both state and national campaigns drove lead generation to new levels. These campaigns successfully generating in excess of 43,000 leads - comprising buyer, seller and investment property management leads. They also combined with substantial local media coverage for the winners and the associated offices. Professional development reached new heights in 2011 with over 200 training sessions conducted throughout Australia. Combined with this was the success of the online Academy where, again, over 25 sessions were delivered direct to offices, thereby providing substantial savings both in time and cost. Over the coming years, the online Academy will be expanded as member feedback, relating to the delivery of high quality training directly to their office, has been substantial. It is worth noting that one of the leading advocates of professional development within our network is Queensland Chairman Mike Gray. His commitment was rewarded when, for the second time, his office (Nerang) won the Real Estate Institute of Australia award for Medium Residential Agency of the Year.

4

2011 saw the introduction of revitalised state awards being presented at the beginning of the year. This initiative enabled national peer recognition at the National Convention conducted in Coolum in May. Not only was the awards night a great success but together with our New Zealand members, the Convention formed a business growth and learning environment. Of course, added to this was our traditional fellowship and fun. There are many network initiatives including the National Convention that would not be the success they are without the support of our alliance partners. We are fortunate that as a network, the relationship with our alliance partners is without parallel within the real estate industry. The comment ‘your Convention is the best in the industry for both relationship building and doing business’ is frequently heard. Fundamentally, whilst we have a commercial relationship with our alliance partners, we each benefit from their commitment to our co-operative environment. The network’s greening policy was recognised in 2011 when First National McConnell (Victoria) won the MobileMuster national achievement award for collecting the most mobile phones, batteries, chargers and accessories for recycling purposes. In conjunction with this community spirit, the First National Foundation was the recipient of many members’ charitable work. The most notable being First National O’Donoghues (Darwin) raising over $23,000 at its annual golf day, which included a major raffle. Another success, on a national basis, was the introduction of ‘The Long Lunch’ where the opportunity for support staff to meet, socialise and exchange expertise with like-minded colleagues was embraced with great enthusiasm. The exchange of ideas during these lunches is reinforcement of our co-operative culture. As the new world of social media rapidly breaks down the boundaries of communication and business, your network leads the way. Since 2009, First National has issued over 5000 Tweets attracting 31,000 ‘followers’. This activity keeps your network top-of-mind amongst consumers. In conjunction, our iPad and smart phone applications we have broken new ground in this burgeoning market. The coming years will be very exciting for real estate agents and, of course, First National members will be the best equipped. In summary, your network has laid the foundation to launch into the new world because our branding, products, initiatives, marketing and resources are well placed. Added to this, with the drive and direction of the membership, our co-operative is well equipped to lead the charge. It is an exciting time to be a member of First National. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2012, it will be in the knowledge that our proud tradition of innovation assures the next 30 years will be just as ground-breaking.

As always, national and state based competitions are backed by media releases that help members maximise publicity while generating goodwill. Local newspapers love the opportunity to offer their readership something free so members easily gained editorial exposure while listing more property for sale or management.

CAMPAIGNS A myriad of state and national campaigns generated over 40,000 business leads, contributing to prof its, increasing momentum, and building members’ brand awareness. Throughout autumn and winter, the combined efforts of New South Wales and Victoria Regional Councils saw the creation of two brand campaigns, used by each state’s membership at opposite times. The Pimp Your Property and Free Fuel For A Year competitions offered consumers the chance to win a Dulux home repaint to the value of $10,000 or a year’s worth of fuel from Caltex.

‘Since First National joined MobileMuster as a partner, it has contributed over 35 kilograms of mobile phones, batteries and accessories. These will now be recycled for resource recovery and made into new products such as stainless steel, jewellery, and plastic fence posts. A great result in such a short period of time.’

Free Fuel For a Year was also popular in a climate where post GFC consumers sought all forms of discounts and savings on day-to-day purchases. With participants required to let First National know whether they were looking to buy, sell or rent an investment property when entering, members grew their customer databases, formed new relationships, and focused upon converting competition leads to profits. Campaign Facebook advertisements for both initiatives were viewed over 47.5 million times and over 40,000 business leads were generated - an average of 88 per member.

The network launched into spring with its national Get The Job Done brand campaign. Winners had five opportunities to win Bunnings Hardware vouchers to the value of $5,000 to finish those odd jobs around the house. The campaign was supported by the release of First National’s first iPhone game, Real Estate Rumble.

Pimp Your Property captured the attention of consumers, attracting 118 positive comments on the network’s news Blog, www.firstnationalnews.com. Although there was no need for consumers to tell First National why they wanted to win the competition, many were so excited by the opportunity to have their homes repainted by Dulux that they wanted to share their reasons - compelling evidence of the power of social media and the network’s ability to help members build brand connections in their local markets.

First National’s commitment to Energy Efficiency is designed to help members foster respect and trust for their business locally. In 2011, the network added its support to the mobile phone industry’s official recycling programme - MobileMuster. With each office promoting the initiative, 92 satchels containing over 35 kilograms of mobile phones were collected for recycling. With real estate agents being major users of mobile phones, it’s good to be seen to do something to reduce the impact of their manufacture on the environment. Plus, with every First National office effectively becoming a drop-off point, countless consumers walked through First National’s doors nationally, creating more opportunities to connect and build new relationships.

Queensland members took a Facebook approach to their Regional Council brand campaign, with every member offered a complimentary Utopia Social Facebook page to promote the state’s Pimp Your Property Home Renovation Giveaway competition. Running from September to midDecember, the competition offered one major prize of $10,000 and ten $500 prizes of Bunnings Hardware vouchers. Once again, member promotion incorporated online, print media and local dropcard promotions.

In the first 30 days alone, over 500 downloads of Real Estate Rumble started a viral consumer promotion that continues to this day, keeping First National top-of-mind with younger potential customers. With over 13,000 campaign entries and supporting social media advertising, publicity generated around the five winners was substantial.

Monthly newsletters give members another tool to remind customers about their property services. Property Management and Salesperson hard copies can be printed, or, Utopia automates the entire process, making it simple and free to keep in front of new and old customers each month. Social Media is an essential realm of marketing in today’s world of real estate and, once again, First National is the leader. The network’s Australian property blog, www.firstnationalnews.com, continues to expand its audience attracting over 30,000 views - the equivalent of filling every seat in the Sydney Opera House more than nine times if it were a concert. The network also operates an array of Twitter, Facebook and blog channels, all of which contribute to raising the profile of the brand. Participation in network’s bi-annual statement about market conditions - Property Market Outlook - also increased in 2011. This initiative provides opportunities for local/national media coverage, reasons for members to contact their customer databases and draws traffic into member websites.

The Pulse remains the chief member communication but The Asset provides specialist property management focus, The Conveyor commercial news, and Regional Round Up provides regional member news. Mobile First National moved into the consumer smartphone space with its iPhone App, First National Real Estate. The App enables people to access residential, commercial, business and rural properties nationally and, since launch, there have been nearly 1000 downloads. With huge numbers of Australians expecting ease of access to information using mobile devices, First National puts their interests first.

Websites With 90% of buyers still starting their search online, the online shopfront remains critical to real estate marketing. Member templates and key websites were all revamped. Social media integration, expanded SEO, bigger property showcases and richer content are some of the enhancements designed to drive traffic to network websites and make consumers ‘stick’.

ONLINE SERVICES As the battle to stay top of mind expands across multiple channels, from desktop to mobile, to social, the network continues to lead the charge by embracing and promoting social media engagement tools, search engine marketing and mobile. Google Assuring that members achieve top Google rankings is First National’s expertise. This guarantees more customers find their way to member listings, creating more opportunities for sales and leasing. The challenge of maintaining top Google search results positions increased in 2011 as the Internet search giant placed even greater focus on delivering local search results - hence the rise of Google Places. Changes to unpaid search results saw the inclusion of business listings on Google Maps as well as a facility for consumers to publicly rate each real estate agency. All First National members are now present on Google Places, including contact details and marketing materials such as multimedia videos and images. The network’s internally driven Search Engine Optimisation initiatives maintained the leading edge throughout 2011. A majority of First National members still appear in the top 10 Google search results, often ranking in the top 5 of their local real estate agencies, some enjoying ‘double’ listing results - both on the listed and map search results.

To make better use of news featuring First National content, www.firstnationalrealestatemedia.com.au was established. Appearances of every member’s editorial can now be easily found and tracked by consumers and members alike. This website expands the more general consumer content found on www.firstnationalnews.com where members access content that they can copy for their own use. The blog contains media releases, newsletters, websites and social media marketing. Further, both initiatives provide SEO assistance, boosting members’ Google search results. In 2011, both the news and media websites have been viewed over 26,000 times. ‘Today, customers want information that is up-to-date. The product and service reviews on sites such as Google Places deliver just that. We strive to do our best to deliver quality service, as well as provide what our customers need to make informed decisions.’ Tim Treeby - Principal First National Real Estate Treeby

With automated customer database management, principals can relax, knowing that regular customer newsletters are looked after. Improvements to Utopia unlocked even more benefits for every member in 2011. Delivery of two Utopia Mobile Apps - Mobile Register and Mobile Lister - enabled iPad and Android users to be more productive, capturing customer data in the field to impress customers and close more sales. The launch of Utopia Social allows members to leverage the power of Facebook, improving its value for consumers while capturing more data.

Platform First National’s CRM, Platform, is a powerful, complete office management product. Integrated with Utopia, it unlocks a powerful, all-in-one, single entry management solution. The release of the Property Management Module in 2011 completed the Platform suite, making it the most comprehensive and powerful real estate software solution in Australia. Leading First National offices now operate from a single, integrated database, streamlining operations and delivering greater control. The network’s membership takes full advantage of the efficiencies that a single real estate solution brings to their business.

‘We have been using Platform since 2005 and I strongly support and recommend this database as an all round contact management system. We are always discovering more uses that we weren’t aware of and continually learning new applications. In addition, there are ongoing improvements to the system with instructions via online webinars with question and answer time so that you don’t have to leave the office for training on the system and its upgrades. We receive prompt service any time of the day or night, including weekends, and I can honestly say that Platform has been the turning point in our business, once we embraced the system’. Members faced extraordinary demands as natural disasters unfolded, leaving First National tenants temporarily homeless across the eastern seaboard. Over 100 calls were received at National Office from distressed tenants, while contact with local First National offices was impossible. As Brisbane’s January floods engulfed home after home, including those of First National principals and their staff, the network’s spirit of cooperation was tested. Members, alliance partners and staff swung behind businesses devastated by floodwaters, paralysed by the inability of staff to reach their workplace as well as the destruction of equipment and files.

Property Managers and Principals offered their immediate support and teams arrived to help flooded offices clean up, complete condition reports, communicate with customers and help re-home flooded tenants. ‘Since we branded First National Commercial North West, we are getting calls from our commercial signs, our ads on the web, and have picked up 6 new managements during the past 6 weeks. However, the exciting thing is that we have now been asked to consult to a large church group and are being paid an hourly rate to do feasibilities. We are now negotiating with the owner of one of them at around $10m and will be paid a selling commission, plus we will get 5 new managements in the building. We would not have had this opportunity if we had not let everyone know that we are commercial ‘experts’ through First National Commercial membership. It is a huge learning curve and I love it. Events like these strengthen public awareness and build community relationships. Regional members can talk to farmers, businesspeople and families about challenges and ever-changing real estate needs. The firstnationalrural.com.au website was upgraded to reflect the National Website, delivering a similar feel and functionality, but with an updated rural and lifestyle property flavour.

Regional Round Up helped regional members share news as well as outcomes from various events in a concise, quarterly wrap up.

Challenging times require specialist focus and 2011 provided both in abundance.

The number of people w ho at tended Tasmania’s AgFest Regional members face unique challenges and First National tailors its services to assure they are addressed. Natural disasters such as widespread flooding, cyclones and bushfires made 2011 a challenging year for regional Australia. Farming communities grappled with the impact of Coal Seam Gas and mining initiatives, international acquisition of large swathes of productive land, Government water plans, a livestock exportation moratorium, as well as a declining market. Against this backdrop, First National maintained a regional service strategy differentiation, member consultation and specialist marketing that appeals to regional communities and lifestyle seekers. The 2010 ‘Rural Specialists’ logo, was broadened by the arrival of the ‘Lifestyle Specialists’ logo, identifying assistance given to ‘tree changers’ and ‘escapists’, looking to move from cities, or to find weekenders. Members are now positioned to exploit business arising from Government initiatives promoting regional relocation. The inaugural Commercial and Rural Conference brought together two specialist arms of First National where members benefited from separate and joint agendas, networking and sharing their business experiences. Introduction of the Commercial QuickStart programme showed the network’s commitment to strengthening business for regional members in tough markets. Forecast strong commercial property activity and small barriers to entry makes commercial expansion attractive for regional members. The network’s ‘national focus’ eMagazine gave regional members a cost-effective point of difference, providing a national springboard for property marketing that emphasises strength of numbers.

8,500 ‘Congratulations on ‘Regional Round Up’, which arrived in my inbox yesterday. Your message about the “tough market” applies to all of us, whether rural, residential or commercial, and I hope this newsletter (and therefore your message) goes out to our entire network. Maybe that “cattle prod” you mentioned would encourage us all to pick ourselves, up, dust ourselves off and get on with the job - the current market is what it’s all about... not what it was like “in the old days”. In fact, the “old days” were really only a few months ago. It’s a whole new game today!’ Lyn Emmerson First National Westwoods, Victoria

Strengthening member relationships and improving service levels was a chief focus for Member Services Managers in 2011. As a result, the ‘member business goals’ strategy matured, achieving a participation rate of 83 per cent. A consultative approach identified the top three goals in each office and enabled Member Services Managers to target their activities to ensure those goals were attained.

150+

Conclusion of the new brand’s implementation was a focal point for the member services team in 2011. Member Services Managers (MSMs) assisted each office in its transition by liaising between members and the graphic design team on shopfront mock-ups, ordering of new livery, and assisting in the transition of online systems. Some incredible office transformations were the outcome of MSMs working with members to revisit reasons for retaining their membership. For many principals, the process proved reinvigorating and generated excitement about First National products and services that they could incorporate in their service offering to hone their competitive edge. Increased profile and improved public perception soon followed, but, in many cases, principals also reported improved morale and momentum amongst staff. The use of ‘Networking Buddies’ assured maximisation of knowledge sharing amongst the network’s expert product users. Each new office joining the network was assigned a buddy to assist them in the transition to the First National brand. Such an initiative helps kick-start the camaraderie for which the network is rightly known. A strong emphasis on ensuring that members and their staff are utilising existing products to their full potential, and, that all staff in each office are aware of the tools and services that are available to them. Professional development opportunities that focussed on member networking assisted in achieving this goal. ‘Long Lunches’ enhanced the mentoring programme, facilitated important feedback to the network, and gave staff from member offices a chance to share ideas as well as problems.

The network’s 2011 joint Convention with our New Zealand colleagues was held at the Hyatt Coolum Resort, Queensland, where members experienced the perfect professional mix of business development sessions, networking opportunities, entertainment and surprises. 30 members experienced the network’s New Member Induction programme which included a brief of products and services as well as a speed-dating introduction to our alliance partners. Approx 500 members, alliance partners, and speakers enjoyed three days of superb Hyatt hospitality, springboarding into the convention with the irrepressible Amanda Gore. John Blackman was, once again, the master of ceremonies introducing the line-up of quality keynote speakers and workshop presenters. In his presentation, Jim O’Brien shared his Task Force Piranha experience and related it to the similarly tough competitive environment real estate business operates in and David Schwarz delivered an emotional address on how to overcome addictions. Charlie Nelson encouraged members to Foresee Change in their businesses, and, Justin Jones and James Castrission inspired members with their story about crossing the Tasman Sea.

First National Foundation First National proved itself one of Australia’s most generous networks in 2011, raising funds not just for Australian Red Cross but also for communities devastated by flood, fire and storms.

‘We have found Foundation great to be involved in since we joined in 2006. Apart from the obvious benefits of being able to give back to the community by raising funds for good causes, it has a number of spin offs for the business, not the least of which is being able to use the fabulous Red Cross brand. Our Foundation Bowls Night gets all our staff involved and gives us a chance to be seen to be giving something back. Having around 200 people at the event gives us an excuse to get together with other people in the community and talk about things other than business. As a result, over $5,000 comes back to local charities and we get further recognition. If you are not a member of the Foundation I urge you to join today.’ Andrew Short - Principal First National Geraldton, Western Australia

The network’s members have always responded well in times of crisis and 2011 saw a range of natural disasters. Members generosity, assisting affected members and collecting monies for devastated communities, was unequalled.

A new marketing strategy was put in place to both market and extend the Foundation’s reach. The strategy included a website, information brochure, member kits and Convention fundraising. Good work was rewarded with the introduction of Foundation awards at each state awards with First National O’Donoghues being the first recipient of the Foundation Office of the Year at May’s National Convention.

‘First National Foundation is not just a feel good exercise; for us it forms a major part of our marketing platform. Our Golf Day gives us a chance to raise some funds each year, but also to make some great connections and strengthen relationships in the business community. Apart from getting all of our staff involved in a good cause, Foundation has brought us not just single listings, but entire developments to sell!’ Jeremy O’Donoghue - Principal First National O’Donoghues, Northern Territory

Mike joined First National Real Estate in 1993 and quickly built a strong reputation as a dedicated, loyal member with a keen interest in supporting rural New South Wales’ membership. Seizing the opportunity to contribute to the wider network’s development, Mike stepped onto New South Wales Regional Council in 2000. As the years passed, he held multiple portfolios and attained the position of State Chairman in 2003. From 2001, Mike served on the Board of Directors, leading the network as National Chairman between 2007 and 2009, a period that saw considerable consolidation of resources, the return of financial stability and technological advancement. As a result, he was presented with the network’s highest honour, the Kaye Heath Award in 2009.
