Steven L. Ricks

Haiku (2006) for solo percussionist and electronic sound (stereo CD audio)

Duration: ca. 9 minutes

Program Note: Haiku is inspired by the following haiku poem: Above the chorus, Listen! A single cricket Shakes a golden bell. I tried to create a concise musical statement that is evocative of a unified mood or tone. The structure of the poem—its phonetic characteristics and 17 syllables—was influential in obvious (and perhaps less obvious) ways. While much of the piece is notated, there are two sections in which the performer is asked to improvise, so the piece relies on the performer to successfully intuit the prevailing mood and make a unique contribution to the sum of events. Haiku was commissioned by Dominic Donato and is dedicated to Dominic and his wife Junko. Steven L. Ricks stevericksmusic@gmail.com stevericks.com
