ANSWER

After the summer holidays, September always feels like a refreshing and exciting month. There’s a slight nip in the breeze and it’s a time of fresh starts. New terms start for schools and colleges, making it a great time to revisit an old interest or try something new. If classes aren’t your thing, then get your cultural kicks from one of the many events across the county that celebrate our local history and heritage – turn to our ‘What’s On’ pages for lots of ideas. Speaking of trying new things, there are some tantalizing treats to tempt your taste buds this month. Why not visit the Beer and Cider Festival or the Great Taste Food Market in Gloucester? Or, closer to home in Cheltenham, visit The Wheatsheaf in Leckhampton for one of their special ‘taster’ evenings where delicious treats will be served up using top quality meat and seasonal produce. Now is also the time to focus on your home and garden and get those important bits of maintenance done before the dark nights and winter weather are upon us. Perhaps your gutter needs clearing, your garden needs a tidy-up, or your chimney needs sweeping before longer evenings and cooler temperatures draw you to your fireside. See our Homes and Gardens section for advertisers who can help you with all of these tasks. If all that sounds too much like hard work, and summer has left you feeling more frazzled than relaxed, then spoil yourself with some pampering. Whether it’s an indulgent Sunday lunch, a relaxing massage or simply an uplifting walk in the country, you will find plenty of inspiration in the pages of this magazine.

Have a great September!

EGINS B N O S A E S 2 -1 1 1 0 2 E TH

WITH Gloucester Rugby being only days away now from its opening match against Northampton Saints at Franklins Gardens on Sunday, 4th September, we went along to Kingsholm to hear from Gloucester’s local lad, Andy Hazell, on what life is like as they begin an exciting new season. Andy is Gloucester’s longest serving player, with 244 games since his debut in 1997 and is signed up to stay at Gloucester until the summer of 2013. Being a local lad through and through, from his early school days at Hempsted Primary School to Severn Vale School, Andy says nothing could prise him away from his Gloucester roots. While at Severn Vale his sports master suggested rugby was more of his game than football, and Andy went along to the under 19’s trial at Oxstalls. He was picked by coach Richard Hill and put forward to go professional. After a tough six months of challenging training, with the support of his family, he proved his worth and was delighted to be rewarded with a contract. Andy trains nearly every day, and says “Gloucester has a special atmosphere, great stadium and fantastic supporters.”

His family are amongst his greatest Andy Hazell fans and avid critics. He has two young daughters who often sport their rugby shirts to support their dad. Being a Gloucester boy he feels a special responsibility to his fans. Be it his cousins in the stand or his fans in the supermarket – being a local player means he is certainly kept on his toes! A specialist open-side flanker, Andy has won 7 caps for England and was in the training squad for two world cups. When asked which clubs he considers to be Gloucester’s greatest rivals, Andy suggested Worcester Warriors and Bath – who visit Kingsholm on the 10th and 24th September respectively. He feels a huge sense of pride playing for Gloucester and is looking forward to the new season with great anticipation, playing alongside fellow old favourites such as Lesley Vainikolo and Peter Buxton as well as Gloucester’s new signings for the 2011-2012 season.

Scotch Eggs Preparation time ~ 20 minutes Cooking time ~ 12/15 minutes Forget about buying boring shop bought scotch eggs with no taste. If you want to impress your friends, or your family with something different, then look no further. You can increase or decrease the chilli to taste, depending on who you’re catering for.

You will need: 500g high quality sausage meat; 10 eggs (8 for the scotch eggs and 2 for the egg wash); 1 medium onion; 3 cloves of garlic; 1½ spoons of Italian herbs (dried or fresh chopped basil, rosemary and thyme; generous helping of salt and pepper; 2 dessert spoons of chilli sauce; 2 dessert spoons of tomato sauce; handful of chopped parsley; 200g breadcrumbs; 200g flour; small amount of milk to add to egg wash; vegetable oil for frying. Method Start by boiling the 8 eggs on a medium/high heat for 8 minutes. In the meantime, put the sausage meat in a large mixing bowl, adding in 3 cloves of chopped garlic as well as the chopped onion. Start adding in the Italian herbs, chilli sauce, tomato ketchup, parsley and the salt and pepper. To mix use a large wooden spoon to thoroughly bind all the ingredients together. Prepare your working surface with a tray of the flour, separate tray of breadcrumbs and whisk the eggs and milk together for the egg wash. When the eggs are cooked, peel back the shells. To make the scotch eggs come together, cover your hands in a generous amount of the flour and take a handful of the sausage meat. Squash the sausage meat between two hands to form a small pancake shape, making sure there’s enough mixture to cover the egg. If you find you need more flour to stop the mixture from sticking together, simply add more as necessary. Take an egg and wrap the mixture around it, making sure it’s covered all the way around. Afterwards, roll the egg in the egg wash, and then cover with breadcrumbs. To cook the scotch eggs, use a fryer at a setting of 170 degrees, turning occasionally for 12-15 minutes until they turn a golden brown colour. Alternatively, you can use a heavy based frying pan on a medium heat to cook them for roughly 5 minutes, and then pop in the oven for a further 7-8 minutes for a lighter recipe. Leave to cool and cut in halves or quarters for a very filling and beautifully tasting snack or starter for a dinner party in any season. We love dipping them in more sweet chilli sauce for an extra fiery kick! Recipe courtesy of Shirley Keene at:

Downham Hill from Uley Bury

This walk climbs steeply up to Uley Bury. However, the climb is well worth it as the views from the top over the Severn Vale are outstanding. A Park in Uley and walk up the path to the right of

the post office. Just before the fields turn right along the signposted footpath between the holly bushes. Turn sharp left just after the start of the stone churchyard wall. Go through the kissing gate and head half-left straight up the hill towards the large tree standing at the edge of the wood. Pick up the well-defined path running along the edge of the wood to a gate. B Go through the gate and follow the path uphill. The path runs to the left of a metal fence after which there is a metal gate. Head uphill along the edge to the Uley Bury information board. C Turn left and follow the path to the south-east edge of the hill fort.

1 Uley Bury occupies a superb promontory site with 300ft (90m) drops on all sides except the north. A rampart and ditch provides further protection. It encloses an area of 30 acres (12ha) which is now privately owned arable land, and could have sheltered up to 2000 Iron Age people.

Leading map publishers, Collins, teamed up with Britain’s largest walking organisation, Ramblers, to produce ‘Short Walks in The Cotswolds’ – an excellent guide with twenty easy walks, all less than 5 miles in length. The Local Answer has been given kind permission to reproduce each walk for our readers. Why not try this one and, if you like it, buy Collins’ superb pocket-size paperback (ISBN: 978-0-00-735942-4) – only £5.99 and available online at www.harpercollins.co.uk. The book features Ordnance Survey mapping – more detailed than the map shown above.

D Turn right between the hillocks and walk downhill through a gate. Keep on the main path steeply downhill, cross a stile and emerge from the woods. Follow the track downhill behind the houses. E At the end of the path turn right, go through the metal gate and at the road turn left past Uley brewery to the main road. Turn left and walk as far as South Street. F Turn right into South Street and follow the road round past the school. Take the right hand fork signposted ‘Sheppard’s Mill’ and leave the metalled road to fork right before the mill and across the stream to a gate. G Go through the gate. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the gate and stile on your left and keeping the fence to your left. At the end of the field go through a gate and head in the same direction towards the far left corner of the field to a stile. Head uphill to the next stile just beneath the woods. H Cross the stile and turn left down to the road. Turn right onto the road for about 100yds (90m) to a gate on the left just before a house. Go through the gate and bear left downhill alongside the fence to a gate on the left. I Go through the gate and head to the left of the church. Cross the stile onto the track and head down to the road. Turn right and walk along the road back to Uley. 2 The small medieval manor house of Owlpen

Owlpen Manor

Page 14

Manor is noted for its picturesque setting. The building dates mainly from 1450 to 1616 with some 18th century additions. After 100 years of neglect it was restored in Arts and Craft style in 1926 by Norman Jewson. The gardens and house are open to the public.

“An Agent you can trust!” The Cheltenham office of Northwood was opened 8 years ago by Patricia Figueras with the intention of providing an excellent service to landlords and tenants. Joined in 2005 by her daughter Nikki Ponsford, they have now added property sales to their business. Northwood has around 100 offices across the UK but each franchise is run independently. Lettings have always been the core of the business and with excellent traditional property management systems and introduction schemes in place, they receive a lot of work through recommendation. “We operate a Platinum system that guarantees rental income to the

landlord if the tenant doesn’t pay the rent or even if the property is vacant” explains Nikki. “Essentially, we take the risk out of letting because there are no catches or fees involved. We are also part of the Ombudsman group that protects clients. We are very aware of all regulations and legal information and operate by following correct procedures”. Northwood are the only agent that can offer a guaranteed rental income even whilst the property is empty. You can find properties that Northwood deal with advertised on rightmove and findaproperty.co.uk or by visiting their branch on the Hewlett Road.

Leckhampton Court Hospice

Have great fun and help others in the process SUE RYDER Leckhampton Court Hospice has organised three great events for autumn. You can have a wonderful day out with all the family, enjoy the benefit of a bit of healthy exercise or put your business acumen to the test (or all three!) – and help raise funds to support local people when they need it most. The Hospice provides beds and specialist palliative care for residents from all over Gloucestershire – an important service that requires as much financial support as possible. However, it’s not all about ‘hand outs’ – Sue Ryder want those contributing to benefit from their involvement too.

Autumn Fayre

To put your effort into perspective – £75 is equivalent to three sessions of physio-therapy that can help a patient with a life threatening condition with their mobility and thereby their quality of life.

Big Wigs Business Challenge If you’d prefer to put your entrepreneurial flair to use for a good cause – enter a team in the Big Wigs Business Challenge and Sue Ryder will give you £50 to take away and grow into more cash for the Hospice over four months. For more information about any of the above please contact Sue Ryder direct – details below.

The Autumn Fayre takes place on Saturday 10th September and promises to be a great occasion for all ages. There will be a bouncy castle, face painters, a barbecue and interesting stalls. The entertainment starts with the Music Man at 11.15am and rounds off at 3.15pm with the Gloucestershire Morrris Men dancing through Cheltenham en route to finishing with a flourish at the Hospice. Tickets are available on the gate (which opens at 11am) – only £2 for adults and £1 for children. If you’re unable to join in on the day, but still wish to help, why not donate a bottle for the tombola in advance or, perhaps, a prize suitable for the raffle?

Ride for Ryder If you are looking for a challenge and a focus for your fitness regime, you can support the Hospice by taking part in their annual cycling challenge – Ride for Ryder – which takes place on Sunday 2nd October. It starts from Cheltenham Race Course and takes in 45 miles of breathtaking Gloucestershire countryside. Entry is £12 in advance and £15 on the day, and Sue Ryder asks that each cyclist aims to raise £75 for the hospice and, even if 45 miles ‘in the saddle’ holds no fear for you, why not just take on the fundraising challenge instead?

Cheltenham’s Winter Garden

Seventy-one years ago the decision was made to demolish a former Cheltenham landmark; the Winter Garden. Built in 1879 the Winter Garden has been described as “one of the most remarkable buildings ever to grace the town”. Originally intended as a recreation area for the upper classes, the monolithic structure never actually came to much and most events held there were less than successful for a variety of reasons. The building changed ownership many times but no owner could make the building pay. Eventually in 1895 the building was bought by the town council, primarily because nobody else would. The Winter Garden was used as an exhibition hall for a while, staging various events, but it was soon to lose this function as well when in 1904 the Town Hall was built – right next door. The building survived throughout the next 35 years but by the time the Second World War came in 1939 the Winter Garden was “an ailing albatross around the council’s neck.” Repairs to the gigantic structure had been neglected for years and the buildings safety was questionable. At this time the structure originally intended to be Cheltenham’s Crystal Palace served no purpose whatsoever. The following year, 1940, the council breathed a huge sigh of relief as the decision was finally made to demolish the Winter Garden. The fabricated excuse was that the buildings size would have provided the German Luftwaffe with an easily identifiable target. Either way, the building was quickly removed. Removing the Winter Garden did not help Cheltenham escape the attentions of the Luftwaffe however, and Cheltenham did suffer many serious bombing raids. All that remains of the once gigantic structure is a few bricks in the side of the Town Hall, bricks that look completely out of place unless you know the true story behind them. The Local Answer

Aromatherapy massage

I ALWAYS feel a little self-conscious going for a massage, but after being asked to experience a Aromatherapy massage at Caroline Hughes’ Nature’s Essence Aromatherapy treatment room my feelings have now totally been transformed. Caroline or ‘Corky’ – as I’m sure she will be known to you after just one appointment – is a font of knowledge in holistic treatments using essential oils. Caroline has just opened her treatment room in Montpellier Terrace and the beautiful art deco surroundings, in conjunction with soothing music, provide the perfect environment to relax. The massage treatment eases muscle pains through the release of toxins, relieves stiffness in joints and alleviates poor circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood. Upon meeting Caroline we sat and discussed my lifestyle, medical history and any current anxieties in my life. We talked about how aromatherapy works through massage and its healing properties. We chose a base oil of grape seed and added essential oils of rose, frankincense and neroli to help relaxation, alleviate tension and promote well-being – and one that wouldn’t leave me feeling too ‘oily’ for my afternoon appointment! This was the most comprehensive massage I think I have ever had, and was certainly 80 minutes of sheer indulgence. After ensuring I was comfortable Caroline massaged my body from head to toe a little at a time, ensuring the rest of my body was kept warm and keeping my modesty intact. Each finger and toe was flexed and massaged and even the palm of my hand. Caroline’s calming and caring attitude made my visit a really pleasant experience and I don’t think I’ll be waiting for any muscle problems before I visit her again!

September is a lovely month, the weather is usually rather good, the evenings havenʼt drawn in too much and the children are back at school!

Use biological control

Now is a good time to use a biological control (nematodes) against vine weevil grubs (you know the little beasts that as grubs lie in wait in pots of cyclamen, primulas, begonias and other species and eat the roots away till the poor plant keels over). The adult weevils make unsightly notches on the leaves of plants like rhododendrons, which will not kill them but look horrid. The biological control is good to use on the pot plants but is not so effective in the garden depending on the soil type. You can buy them from the garden centre or online. From what I remember you have to send off for the little ʻcrittersʼ as they donʼt have a shelf life, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions on the packet and mix up the microscopic nematode with water and drench the pots. Donʼt let the compost dry out.

Plant Colchicums

48 Lambert Avenue, Shurdington Cheltenham GL51 4ST

DIGGER

In t he G arden

Now is also a good time to plant Colchicums (autumn flowering crocuses). They like sheltered but sunny positions under trees (if too exposed they get beaten down by wind and rain). They look like crocus but have six anthers instead of three which crocus have. You buy them as dry corms, and arrange in small groups of seven or more where they will be readily seen in the autumn and will make a lovely late display. Warning – all parts of the colchicum plant are poisonous so wash hands after handling!

Divide perennials

If the weather allows you can get on with lifting and dividing any perennials that have got too congested, and stopped flowering as well as they had been – this can be done in spring but by then things can get very busy so it is one less job to do. Lift the large clumps and with a pair of garden forks back to back, prise them apart into smaller pieces. Discard the woody, congested centre of clumps, replanting pieces which look healthy and have a good root system and new shoots into compost enriched soil with some bone meal added. These will give a good show the following summer. This can be done up until Christmas depending on the weather.

Asparagus ferns

Cut asparagus ferns to the ground and get rid of them as they may be harbouring the eggs of the asparagus beetle – Crioceris asparagi. Apply a balanced feed such as blood, fish and bone meal over the soil surface to help ensure a good crop next year.

A helping hand – when it’s most needed Ian George and Co believe a funeral service should be a very special tribute to the life of a loved one. Being organised enough and making clear decisions are difficult when you are bereaved. It is good to know, therefore, that should the time arrive when you need to rely on a professional, flexible, friendly and compassionate service – help is at hand. Ian George is a Board Director of the ‘British Institute of Funeral Directors’, and combined with over 30 years experience in the funeral business he has recently formed ‘Ian George and Co’ – a new Funeral Director and Monumental Mason Company, serving Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. Having worked in Cheltenham for many years (as well as Birmingham and South Wales), Ian’s decision to provide a ‘Service of Excellence’ in the town in which he lives is fully supported by his family. His wife Denesha and sons Tim and Josh, play their part – alongside a team of dedicated and experienced support staff – in delivering client satisfaction in difficult circumstances. Many of the team at Ian George and Co are actively involved in local organisations and professional associations, and the whole company prides itself on serving all faiths, creeds and doctrines from every

community. Their mission is, simply put, to ‘honour lives and comfort loss’. Ian says: “Being Cheltenham’s only ‘Licensed’ Funeral Director and qualified Embalmer helps me deliver an extremely personal service – helping and guiding the family to give their loved one a truly befitting tribute. I am available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support the families we serve.” Ian’s company is committed to the environment – sourcing all their products from businesses that conform to the high environmental standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Ian George and Co are operating from new premises on the Gloucester Road – a central position within the town – opposite the railway station. As well as looking after clients who suddenly find themselves in need of his service, Ian also caters for those who wish to plan ahead and has a wide range of funeral prepayment plans available. Whether your requirements are imminent or forward thinking, Ian welcomes you to visit his office and discuss the extensive range of services available.

Money Matters

Where to invest? with Roger Downes

The recent stock market crashes made me wonder about where the best place was to invest my money. Not that I plan to answer that question for you here – you must do your own research and seek your own advice and not rely on these musings. About the same time, someone told me that horse number 17 in the big race at York was a sure fire winner – only had to turn up to win, sort of thing. Not that I am encouraging gambling in this article; if you wish to do that, you should do so responsibly. But it did make me wonder about all the options open to you if you have a few bob spare or if, more crucially, you are trying to work out where to put your life’s savings so that they are making you good money for later life. The value of investments can go up or down and even the best fund managers struggle to get them to go in the right direction in times of market free fall. So if that’s too risky, how about a nice, safe investment in a bank or building society. Well with bank base rate on the floor, interest rates paid to depositors are miserly. Mmmm ... property then perhaps? That’s always been regarded as a safe haven, but as most people who have tried to market their houses recently will tell you, trying to sell it just at the moment requires an incredible amount of luck in finding a buyer. And I really don’t want to go back to that tip for York (which is still running by the way). Good luck with your thoughts. I think I’ll just go back to being ‘Confused of Cheltenham’. Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

A working week I have had plenty of feedback about my regular column in The Local Answer, from inside and outside the Police family – with most of it quite positive. One of the comments I received was that they would be interested in what I do in a typical day, which is a good question – so, I thought I would give a little snapshot of my working week. I have responsibility for the southern part of Cheltenham including the Town centre from The Reddings in the west to Tim Waterhouse Charlton Kings in the east. I have Cheltenham South LPT. to respond to crime trends, deal Inspector with community issues, plan for future events, carry out operational activities and attend many meetings. I am also responsible for 60 members of staff which can be a full time job in itself sometimes as you can imagine. However, the positives usually outweigh the negatives, and I have a lot of pride in how my team performs and continues to perform; particularly how we have driven down crime over many years hard work, kept people safe from harm and have done an unprecedented amount of community engagement. We are not perfect, but my belief is that we are pretty good at what we do, particularly the work that the community doesn’t see, the meetings, the planning and the late night patrols; all trying to keep you safe and keep the wolf from the door. Apart from my team I am also the conduit into the rest of the organisation and with our partners. We are supported by the CID, the traffic department, dog handlers, firearms officers and many others; and taken together with the assistance from our partners such as the street scene wardens from the borough council there is not much we cannot deal with effectively and professionally. Some issues keep raising their heads such as irresponsible driving by some cruisers on a Sunday night or the burglary issue but we know about these problems and are trying to resolve them, but sometimes these problems are so complicated and labour intensive it can take years to achieve. Anyway, the first week in August saw me involved with planning for the following weekends public order patrol, attending the local magistrates on a licensing issue, supporting some of my team as they carried out a drugs warrant in Charlton Kings, dealing with an officer who has left the Police due to ill health, carrying out several work related job chats with some of my supervisors and negotiating extra funding for anti-social behaviour patrols. Also attending a public meeting with the Police Authority chair to answer any questions on current Policing issues, carrying out foot patrol along the Honeybourne line with one of my Community Officers, dealing with several staff welfare issues, buying doughnuts for the team as it was my birthday, trying to explain to staff the implications of the Governments Windsor and Hutton reviews, attending a half day training course on new legislation, attending the new Police surgery at Cheltenham Borough Council and to finish my week off I am going to be involved in the Cotswold Pride & Olympic torch day in the Town. A normal week! I hope the weather is to your liking and please remember to lock those doors & windows and report anything suspicious. Stay safe!
