The Local Answer

As I write this article, the city’s Christmas Lights have just been switched on, with a wonderful lantern procession of local schoolchildren and a packed Cathedral Service. Christmas is an important time for local traders and I hope that as many of you as possible will do your shopping in the city to support them. Parking is free in the Station Road, St Michael’s Square and Westgate Street car parks after 4pm on late night shopping Thursdays (1st, 8th & 15th). We tend to create more waste over the holiday period, so please try to recycle as much as you can. Our crews will still be working over the Christmas break. If you’re not sure which day your refuse and recycling will be collected, look at www.gloucester.gov.uk or call 01452 396396. 2011 has been a busy year for Gloucester. We’ve worked hard to deliver the savings needed to cope with a reduced government grant and to freeze the council tax at the same time. Now we’re working to finalise the budget for next year – and we want to freeze the council tax again. You can tell us if we’re on the right track by logging onto our website from mid-December onwards. We’ve also made progress with regenerating the city – the Quays to city centre linkages project has been completed, we’re close to an agreement with Stanhope on the Kings Quarter development, the Greyfriars scheme on the old College site now has planning consent and there is a privately-funded scheme for the Railway Triangle about to go before the planning committee. Gloucester Quays has announced a huge new investment and we’ve taken on the assets of the Regional Development Agency, including the Fleece Hotel. 2012 promises to be busy too. But before all that starts, let me wish all Local Answer readers a very Happy Christmas.

In the Seat

with Richard Graham MP for Gloucester

ONLY DAYS TO SAVE OUR CITY CENTRE

Monday 5th December – that is D-Day for Gloucester and we must all pull together to make sure the city centre stays in this constituency not the Forest of Dean – that the identity of our single seat city remains linked to one MP, accountable to residents for city centre regeneration and other issues. As the first Gloucester MP both to live and have my office in the heart of the city for at least 70 years I feel particularly strongly about that. Before that date, Gloucester needs as many people as possible to submit their opposition to the current plans and present an alternative. Here is mine: All residents of the entire city centre, Alney Island, Pool Meadow and St Oswalds would vote for a Gloucester MP. The bulk of the voters needed to increase the size of the Forest would come from the adjoining Tewkesbury parishes. It’s not perfect: Hempsted residents would vote for an MP for the Forest. But because we can’t move the whole of Coombe Hill from Tewkesbury and split that constituency in half, it remains the only viable option that is likely to succeed. Ministers and the Boundary Commission have confirmed that this proposal is allowed within the rules if the case is strong. Ours is. This proposal is supported by the Mayor, the Bishop, the Dean, The Citizen, The Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, the Federation of Small Business, the Westgate Association, the Gloucester Conservatives and other political parties like UKIP and the Greens, and the Lib Dem proposal is identical for Gloucester. United we may win: divided we’re more likely to lose. Let us not allow the entire city centre to be divorced for the first time in over seven hundred years from the MP for, and accountable to, the residents of Gloucester. You can respond in one of the following ways: G Online via the commissions website: http://consultation.boundarycommissionfor england.independent.gov.uk/ G By email to: southwest@bcommengland.x.gsi.gov.uk G In writing to: Boundary Commission for England, 35 Great Smith Street, London, SW1P 3BQ Winning this battle depends on YOUR help. Please remember responses need to go as soon as possible!

Leach Valley

The River Leach is a tributary of the Thames but in the early part of its course it is seasonal, running above ground only when there is sufficient rainfall. This walk follows a winding valley where the elusive river disappears underground and emerges again beneath deep, weed-covered pools. The countryside here is quiet, offering a chance to escape the crowds and traffic. A Park in Eastleach Turville and walk through the village past the church to the crossroads.

1 This simple stone clapper footbridge is the

photographic focal point of the village. It is particularly attractive in spring amid banks of daffodils. It is called Keble's Bridge after the famous local rector, John Keble, who became leader of the Oxford Movement in the Church of England in the early 19th century.

The two villages: Eastleach Turville and Eastleach Martin sit either side of the pretty River Leach with the parish churches of each village only a couple of hundred yards apart linked by the clapper footbridge.

B Turn left along the road to Holwell and continue past the windpump to an iron bargate on the left.

Leading map publishers, Collins, teamed up with Britain’s largest walking organisation, Ramblers, to produce ‘Short Walks in The Cotswolds’ – an excellent guide with twenty easy walks, all less than 5 miles in length. The Local Answer has been given kind permission to reproduce each walk for our readers. Why not try this one and, if you like it, buy Collins’ superb pocket-size paperback (ISBN: 978-0-00-735942-4) – only £5.99 and available online at www.harpercollins.co.uk. The book features Ordnance Survey mapping – more detailed than the map shown above.

C Pass through the gate and take the path through

the meadows close to the river. Go through a gate and follow the river bank to the edge of the woodland ahead, crossing a stile along the way. D Pass through the smaller, lower gate into the wood and follow a path close to the wall and river on the left. Where the river bears sharp left, carry straight on along the waymarked path. E With the field on your right continue ahead and through woodland until the path is crossed by a welldefined track. F Turn left on to the track and continue along the left-hand edge of the fields to the road. Turn left and walk a short way almost to the road junction. G Turn left into the bottom field and follow the valley bottom round to a gate. Pass through the gate and follow the track to another gate by a bridge. H Pass though the gate and follow the right-hand field boundaries. At the last field before the houses, bear half-left across the field to a gate and follow the lane back into the village.

SPEEDY JONNY STEPS UP THE PACE He’s been viewed as one of Gloucester Rugby’s best young prospects for quite some time now but Jonny May is in no mood to hang around quite literally. The Rugby World Cup period has allowed a number of players to stake a claim for more game time and May has been letting his rugby do the talking for him. Two tries in the first two Aviva Premiership fixtures saw him make his mark early but still one nagging question persists and it’s a chance to put the record straight. Who is quicker? Him or Charlie Sharples? (Laughs) “He’ll probably be angry at me for saying this but I beat him over 40 metres last season so I’m going to say it’s me! Over 40 metres I’d back myself.” Pace isn’t everything of course but May has been quick out of the blocks in 201112. Having made six Premiership starts in total last season, he’s almost at that total already. Prior to this season, the 21 year old had featured mainly at outside centre or on the wing. However, he’s also turned out at 12 in this campaign. How is his role differing? “It depends. When I’m playing alongside Les (Lesley Vainikolo), I’m playing a traditional 13 role. However, when I’m playing alongside Trinds (Henry Trinder), we tend to mix it up and change positions from time to time.” “On those occasions, it’s not that

different for me from playing a normal 13 role and not too difficult for me to adjust.” He may only be 21 with hopefully many games in the Gloucester shirt ahead of him but the Swindon born flyer is already thinking ahead and working hard away from the playing field. “I’m pretty busy at the moment. I’ve resumed my studies at UWE Hartpury. I did my first year a couple of years ago but then rugby took over completely for a bit. However, I’m now looking to finish my degree in Sports Business Management. It’s good. I don’t have to travel too far for the lectures and I like to have something else to occupy my mind. And, hopefully, it will open up opportunities away from rugby.”

Helping people to believe in themselves ADott Ash is a 19 year old rapper from Gloucestershire who released his first album in November of this year. He is also a resident at Bramah House in Cheltenham, one of County Community Projects’ (CCP) high support assessment centres for homeless young people aged 16 to 25, and his real name is Ash. CCP, with its Head Office at 15 Royal Crescent, Cheltenham, is one of Gloucestershire’s leading charities working with the vulnerable, and reaches out to young people like Ash (left) using innovative methods and helped along by a ‘can do’ ethos that permeates the organisation. Ash has had a difficult upbringing, spending several years living in hostels. It is his life experiences that have served as the inspiration for his music which makes it so compelling. His debut album – “I’ll Be Something” – reflects his determination to turn his life around and make something of himself. Ash tells us: “I don’t like to talk too much about my upbringing. My music is personal, and when I write about the issues in my life they’re no longer a burden to me. If you want to know how my life has been then just listen to the lyrics of my songs. I like to keep moving forward and not look back.” Ash is clearly a talented musician but his career has undoubtedly been helped by CCP who know that music is a powerful tool for engaging with the disaffected young people in our communities. Over the last eighteen months Ash has been honing his talent in CCP’s own fully equipped recording and practice studio in its Education Centre complex at 340 High Street, Cheltenham. Last month, thanks to sponsorship from the Midcounties Co-operative and support from the Fairgame Theatre, he produced a critically acclaimed album that is on sale in Coop stores, HMV, iTunes and Amazon. Cordell Ray (right), CCP’s Chief Executive, said: “We are proud of Ash, of the progress he is making on both a professional and personal basis. Access to the recording studio isn’t the only support we have given Ash and other residents. Residents are given a personalised support plan aimed at gaining them independence which may include a variety of measures such as life skills coaching, emotional wellbeing counselling, and help with drug or alcohol addiction. Our aim is simply to give them some stability, optimism and real life prospects.” While CCP, founded in 1989 by local businessman Michael Ratcliffe to help young homeless people in Cheltenham, has always kept at its core the notion of transforming the lives of young homeless people, over the years its remit has expanded and developed to include improving the lives of children, families and vulnerable adults across Gloucestershire. Never is this more apparent than each year in the run up to Christmas, when CCP Page 12

staff, volunteers and residents like Ash, all pull together to make its Hamper Scamper Christmas Giving Scheme a bigger and better success than before. Christmas is always seen as a special time of year, but this isn’t always the case for everyone. The expense and expectation can place a real strain on any family, but particularly those with low incomes and difficult family situations. There are also many lonely and vulnerable adults who simply have nobody to be with at this time of year. CCP’s Hamper Scamper Scheme, which relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers, provides hampers and gifts to those who need them. It’s not too late to get involved and there are a number of ways to help. We need donations of gifts for children, and food such as luxury boxes of chocolates and biscuits, food staples such as pasta, cereal, rice, and tea bags, and tinned goods such as tuna, soup, and meat. We also need help with sorting, wrapping and packing and delivering, as well as financial contributions. To get involved, contact Cordell Ray on 01242 228999 ext 111, at hamperscapmer@ccprojects.org.uk or www.ccprojects.org.uk. To catch up with Ash, visit http://www.facebook.com/adottashmusic or http://twitter.com/#!/ADottAsh. For more information about using CCP’s Musical Youth Studio, please contact Malaki Patterson at 01242 228999 ext 405 or at malaki.patterson@ccprojects.org.uk.

Lisa Jamieson

LISA Jamieson set up Bentham Beauty three years ago – providing an extensive range of beauty and massage treatments – and she’s just completed a beautiful ‘make over’ of the business premises, further enhancing the experience for her clients. Based at Witcombe, Bentham Beauty is readily accessible and has ample free parking. The refurbishment has resulted in two wonderful treatment rooms with décor, facilities and furnishings designed to cater for your needs in a relaxing environment. There is also a Spray Tanning room, w.c. and reception. Lisa’s services include facials, massage, body scrubs, waxing, spray tanning, manicures, pedicures, lash and brow tints and perms, eyelash extensions and make-up – with tips on colours and applications for both ‘day to day’ and special occasion requirements.

Fabulous deals! Her standard prices are great – call Lisa or visit her website (details below) for actual rates – and new customers enjoy a 20% discount on their first appointment. Existing clients are not left out either – see Lisa’s offer of £3 off any treatment in the top right corner. For an even better deal, both new and existing customers can take advantage of monthly offers – in celebration of the refurbishment being completed, Lisa has three fantastic offers for December, details on the right. As you’d expect with any professional salon, Lisa uses top quality equipment and products such as Sienna X for tanning and Novalash extensions. However, it’s Lisa herself who makes a visit to Bentham Beauty an experience customers like to repeat. Her warm, friendly and considerate manner are terrific natural attributes that

complement her desire to deliver the best possible treatments for visitors. With plenty of time allowed between appointments, customers are never rushed. Lisa says: “Whatever service I’m delivering, it’s important people are at ease. Having two treatment rooms helps enormously – after many sessions, particularly a massage, people enjoy a little time on their own to further unwind or maybe freshen up. I can simply leave them to relax, whilst inviting my next client into the other room.” Lisa also operates a Loyalty Card Scheme and various other packages, including party bookings for spray tanning.

Not just for the ladies! Bentham Beauty isn’t exclusively for ladies – many men take advantage of the superb facilities (and prices!). With Christmas almost upon us, it’s very easy to treat a loved one – him or her – to a bit of pampering. You can ring up and pay over the phone for a Gift Voucher (which can be collected or posted to you) – a great present which allows the recipient to choose the treatment they’d prefer!

The Local Answer

Can you believe that December is here already?! As I write this article it is unseasonably mild and the thought of crisp, cold weather is actually very appealing. The good side of this mild weather is that it extends the window of planting so things can be chopped and changed in the border and work can carry on – actually that could also be the bad side, especially if you are looking forward to hanging up the spade for a few weeks and sitting cosily indoors leafing idly through seed catalogues! Why not try making a ʻrusticʼ wreath this year? You can use some bare stems of ʻold manʼs beardʼ (clematis vitalba) from the hedgerows, or some Clematis Montana . You can wrap them round an old wire coat hanger pulled into shape if you want something regular, or I just make a heart-shape with the stems, adding a bit of ivy and anything else you can find. Finish it off with a tartan ribbon, and there you have it – very ʻCountry livingʼ and even better FREE. Now the question of Christmas presents for gardeners. A lovely present for someone who is a regular gardener is a pair of Felco secateurs – the brand used by professionals and amateurs alike. They come in a range of weights and sizes so you can get a nice light pair that suit ladies and more meaty ones for the large rugby playing types (probably men). If you go to the garden centre they usually have a display so you can handle the different types. Books I have really enjoyed and found useful include the RHS ʻPropagating Plantsʼ by Alan Toogood – easy to read and lovely clear illustrations on how to get plants for nothing! The Well- Tended Perennial Garden by Tracy Disabato-Aust is also very informative with plenty of advice and tips. There is also the added interest of seeing how glamorous this woman is, and she runs her own business and she is a mother and she does loads of triathalons etc (actually on second thoughts donʼt read it – it is too depressing). Stocking fillers for the gardener – well, labels, and twine never come amiss. Of course if you really want to show how much you love your other half why not buy them a garden replanting design, or makeover? This could ensure that your garden is easy maintenance in the future (and thus cut down on your workload – think about it!) See my website for details. Right that is my plug over with, just to say I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in the garden.

A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST Richard Furness gives us a rare opportunity to see Great Britain as once viewed by local explorers The dawn of the railways in the Victorian era gave families an unprecedented opportunity to travel and explore faraway places for the first time. Train companies were quick to recognise the growing market in tourism and in doing so promoted holiday destinations in Britain visited by train. They did this by commissioning artists to paint picturesque scenes of the countryside, seaside resorts and other places of interest. These were then made into posters and bill boarded up and down the country to encourage travel by train. Until recently many of these posters were discarded or destroyed as new forms of travel became available and marketing MP Richard Graham companies found (left) Steve Preston Pure Offices Centre more creative Manager (right) ways to sell travel. That was until the likes of Richard Furness saw the value of these historic posters and began to list and categorise the posters in existence. Richard, an author and keen enthusiast of steam train travel, is writing a series of books covering the length and breadth of Britain. The books are titled Poster to Poster and can be found on his website www.postertoposter.co.uk In celebration of the completion of book four, Pure Offices in Gloucester, where Richard’s business ‘JDF Publishing’ is located, agreed to host an exhibition of posters from Richard’s personal collection.

Pictured from left to right: MP Richard Graham, Sir William McAlpine, Richard Furness JDF

The exhibition displayed a total of 40 posters and gave visitors a rare opportunity to enjoy the beauty and the nostalgia of a bygone era. Many a fond memory was rekindled by visitors to the exhibition. Over 200 visitors came to Kestrel Court in Waterwells Business Park which opened its doors to the public, on Wednesday 16th November. Special guests included Sir William McAlpine, a keen collector of steam memorabilia, who can boast to having his own full size train set at his home. Also Richard Graham MP for Gloucester described his admiration at the reception, where he praised local businesses for working together to showcase events such as the exhibition, helping to attract tourism and business to the city. The exhibition closed on Saturday 19th November, but don’t worry if you missed it, there is a bigger exhibition taking place at Pure Offices at Portishead in March. Due to the success, Pure Offices in Gloucester are hoping to host a similar exhibition, focusing on Canals

in Britain in the New Year, supporting the Cotswold Canals Trust and the opening of The Stroud Waterway Canal. For more information visit www.pureoffices.co.uk Steve Preston, manager at Pure Offices said “in today’s difficult times it is important for businesses to work closely together. For this reason we have tried to create a business community within our business centres, providing the opportunity for companies to network and promote their business. Organising an exhibition of this size takes a lot of hard work and effort, but is always worthwhile if appreciated by the community. Thank you to all our guests who have left kind comments about the event.” Pictures by JD Photography

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

Pride and Positives Christmas is finally here and with it come a number of enjoyable events in the City such as the switching on of the lights, the Victorian market and of course late night shopping. This is also a busy time for the local policing team who aim to make sure that everyone can enjoy the festivities, whether attending the Christmas events or enjoying the night time Mark Soderland economy. There will Gloucester Inspector therefore be an increased number of officers on duty over the Christmas period to keep people safe from harm and ensure the occasion is an enjoyable one. However please also remember that the usual rules apply to crime prevention. Don’t leave your valuables in unattended vehicles when out enjoying Christmas parties, shopping or going to the various events. Make sure you keep on top of your home security when you are out over the festive season. Don’t make it easy for burglars and don't let them spoil Christmas for you. This time of year is also a good time to look back over the last twelve months, which has certainly been very eventful for the local policing team here in Gloucester. The year began with considerable work to ensure the Force restructure occurred as seamlessly as possible and with as little change as possible in the service seen by the community. The restructure itself took place in April and was quite a challenge for us, especially with the added pressure of achieving £18million of savings, to be incorporated into the plan over the next couple of years. Throughout the Spring the team were involved in a variety of events, aimed at consulting and engaging with local people to identify priorities at the heart of local communities. Then in August came a true test of the team and the Constabulary, when Gloucester was sadly affected by the disorders sweeping the Country. However this produced unexpected positives in the overwhelming support local police received from the community in tackling these offenders. In September we saw how well the City had moved on, with the Gloucester day celebrations and the Gloucester Youth showcase. And in November I was very proud to attend the Remembrance service at the War Memorial in Gloucester and see how well attended this service was, demonstrating the strong sense of community we have here in Gloucester. Looking ahead into the New Year, the team will continue to make themselves available to you, to raise concerns and tell us what matters most to you. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
