Melanie Meigh inside ‘Teal’ the gypsy caravan and (right) her father Philip.

Developing dreamland This month’s ‘cover girl’ is Melanie Meigh (pictured with her feathered friend Rubette) who runs Prinknash Bird & Deer Park which was created by her father – Philip Meigh – in 1974. Living locally, Philip was an established cartoonist and artist and he had amassed an impressive collection of waterfowl before his death in 2008, and Melanie has done a marvellous job in developing her father’s dream ever since. She has worked extremely hard to maintain the beautiful tranquility of the park, while adding more and more delightful features for all age groups to enjoy. There is always an extremely warm welcome for visitors – not just from Melanie and her staff, but from the abundance of cute creatures waiting to greet you, all full of individual character and eager to make new friends. Visitors can bottle feed Bambi, groom Toffee and Treacle (the miniature donkeys) and meet the array of birds and deer who will all gladly feed from your hand. You can even book one of the beautiful gypsy caravans – ‘Teal’ or new addition ‘Eider’ – for your child’s party, or join in the Easter fun in the ‘Mad Hatter’s Marquee’ – see our ‘What’s On’ section for details. Another new arrival at the park are the Kookaburras which have been handreared by Melanie. They are being trained to be tame enough for hand-feeding and, hopefully, to perform flying demonstrations in the summer. Melanie is in the final stages of organising another major step forward in what the park has to offer – the construction of an education centre and new shop – again, both in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere of this wildlife haven. Why not visit Melanie at the park this month – you’re certain to experience some wonderful photo opportunities with the incredibly friendly birds and deer all around you.

Delicious Dishes

Iced Easter Biscuits

Chocolate Ganache

Firstly make a chocolate sponge (size of your choice) and then fill and cover with this delicious ganache (recipe is enough for a 23cm/9in round cake) ...

You will need: 225g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into small pieces. 250ml/8fl oz double cream. Method: Put the chocolate and cream in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, stir until smooth then leave to cool. Whisk until the mixture begins to hold its shape. Use some to sandwich the sponges together then cover the cake with the rest and either leave slightly roughed up or smooth with a palette knife. Decorate with chopped flakes and mini eggs and pipe on a message if required.

~ Makes about 25 ~

You will need: 220g soft butter. 110g caster sugar. 275g plain flour. Icing sugar and decorations of your choice.

Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4. With an electric whisk, beat the butter and sugar until creamy. Mix in the flour and bring the dough together with floured hands. 2 Roll out on a lightly floured surface to about 5mm thick. Cut out your chosen shapes(I got my cutters from poundland) and transfer to lightly greased baking sheets- I only put 6 to a sheet as they do spread. 3 Bake on the centre shelf for 15/18 minutes until lightly golden. Leave to cool for a few minutes then transfer to a cooling rack. 4 When cold, mix up some icing sugar with water, then spread one side of the biscuits with the white icing and leave to dry. Make up a little more icing and use some food colouring of your choice, then pipe round the edges of your biscuits adding any decorations you like.

Putting her stamp on it Many local people will have already witnessed the developments taking place at Charlton Church Post Office – new owner Jude Watts and her team have made a huge effort to date, but the work’s only just begun. Jude enlightens us on recent events and improvements for customers ... “Since taking over at the beginning The team (l-r): Louise Davies, Jill Robinson, Jude Watts and Veronika Jordan of February we have been exceptionally busy. Trainers have been in as well as auditors to ensure everything is done correctly. They have been amazed at the volume of people that use this Post Office and also how diverse all the transactions have been, from Fishing Licences to Car Tax to many large volume parcel senders (ebayers), Premium Bonds, Banking, Pensions, Foreign Currency – the list goes on. “I would like to thank everyone for their continued support and patience through the transition of new ownership and the renovations. There have been a few staff changes recently to help improve the service we offer. There’s been lots of interest in the CK Craft Section and I am pleased to announce the first display (in April) from Bob Lea – a local illustrator of children’s books that are produced by Puffin and sold in Australia – with books at a reduced RRP. There will be different displays each month – details available soon. “The Post Office is now open at lunchtimes and an application to extend opening hours on Saturdays has been submitted. We are also under review to become a ‘Main’ Post Office which would result in investment funds to further upgrade the premises, improve opening hours and add extra services for our customers. “Charlton Church is a highly regarded Post Office within the network and I’ve recently been advised we may be one of 500 (out of 11,500) that get to sell the Gold Medal Olympic stamps on the Sundays following the Medal wins. J u d e Wa t t s “I look forward to seeing you all in the future.”

Have fun getting fit, lean and healthy! It’s probably fair to say that too many of us don’t invest enough time in two of the most important things in our lives – our own bodies and health. Whether you want to get in shape for the summer holiday or simply just to feel healthier, fitter and more energized, Laura Milne can help! Laura is a personal trainer and, alongside her work at Reach Fitness near the lido, she has been running bootcamps since last summer. Don’t panic! While the term ‘bootcamp’ can provoke visions of Sargent Major’s bellowing at new recruits and pushing them till they collapse – LM Bootcamps are designed to encourage, advise and support members in the achievement of their goals.

‘Being outside is great’

During the winter Laura has run the camps indoors, but now spring is here she’s “going outside” with new start-ups in Cheltenham, Bishop’s Cleeve, Winchcombe, Gloucester and Chosen Hill – all starting Tuesday 1st May. It’s not all about exercise, guidance on nutrition and support from Laura and other bootcampers are extremely important too. Laura said: “We work hard and have fun. Technique and safety is vital – you will be guided throughout. There is a nutrition guide to follow and this will help get you the healthiest you have ever been, along with workout plans to be completed at home. You are supported and given information to assist you every step of the way by text, email, nutrition evaluations and much more.”

Laura said: “I love teaching the bootcamps – it is hard Money back guarantee work but great great fun. I build a great relationship with every bootcamper and help encourage them to achieve. Laura knows the atmosphere of the sessions and the The best thing is seeing results on their fitness and fat/inch variety of ‘tools’ she uses works – she says: “if they don’t loss.” then you get your money back!” Laura Milne Many people have already benefited greatly from Camaraderie is such an important factor: “We have joining the ‘club’. Jackie’s Journey How Jackie Rogers lost 4 stone at Ladyzone s an overweight woman in late middle age, Jackie never felt comfortable in traditional health clubs. So she booked a free trial at Ladyzone and after losing more than four stone, has never looked back… “On my first visit to Ladyzone I was made to feel so welcome and I was gobsmacked to find out that after only 6 weeks I had lost over a stone. I have now lost 4 stone 1lb and 123.5cm, and it feels amazing. I’ve got so much more energy now and people are always commenting on how much my

shape has changed. It’s given me a lot more confidence, and I no longer feel self-conscious. I was able to walk the Sydney Harbour Bridge at Christmas – one of my goals – and I now have my daughter’s wedding to look forward to in May where I will be wearing a dress four sizes smaller than a year ago.

I love that the workout only takes 30 minutes, and that you’re not slogging away on one machine for ages. The members and staff are all so supportive and it’s such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Jackie walking the Sydney Harbour Bridge at Christmas

As well as having lost weight I feel much healthier, and my husband and children are really proud of what I’ve achieved. Taking that first step to change is always the hardest part, but if you’re nervous about joining a gym, I can assure you that Ladyzone is non-threatening, non-judgemental and 100% supportive.”

No one knows for certain how April got its name, but it may have come from the Latin word ‘aperire’ which means ‘to open’. April is the month when in the northern hemisphere buds begin to open and things start to grow again after the winter. April Fools Day April begins with a day of fun and jokes – April Fools Day. The origins of the custom are unknown, but it has been kept ‘alive’ for hundreds of years. The First of April, some do say Is set apart for All Fools Day; But why the people call it so, Not I, nor they themselves do know.

The arrival of the cuckoo is the signal that spring has come – it arrives sometime in mid-April and is said to sing from St. Tiburtius’ Day (14th April) to St.John’s Day (24th June). The cuckoo is arguably the UK’s best known summer visitor. Spending the winter months in Africa, cuckoos arrive back in the UK during late April or early May, timing the arrival to match the breeding season of its ‘hosts’ species here. The main hosts in the UK are the Dunnock, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail and the Reed Warbler. As one of the most infamous brood parasites, cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds with precision timing. Once hatched, the chick ejects the legitimate occupants and then gets fed by its new and unsuspecting foster parents – true masters of deception.

NEW ARRIVALS: (left) Kookaburras come to Prinknash Bird & Deer Park and (above) Melanie with ‘Eider’ – the adorable gypsy caravan.

Even more to do and see ... In 2009 Prinknash Bird & Deer Park introduced ‘Teal’ the ‘roll top’ gypsy caravan for children’s parties of 16 or more, and is now adding sister caravan ‘Eider’ – the perfect place to have a more secluded child’s party. Eider seats four children and two adults with ease for the birthday picnic and costs just £45 including entry to the park. It has taken seven months to hand paint Eider and deck out the caravan internally with delightful fabrics to charm any child. Eider is situated in the Golden Wood, not far from the famous Wendy House, and must surely be the most unique venue in England to celebrate a birthday. This really is the place to be seen for your child’s special day! As if this is not enough, by the summer the Park is hoping to have got off the ground with the Kookaburras who will be flown at 12 noon every day! Park owner Melanie Meigh has been hand-rearing the Kookaburras and expects them to soon be tame enough to be fed by visitors and, of course, entertain their ‘guests’ with their aerial demonstrations. Since 1974 the park has been a wonderful, tranquil place for children, parents and grandparents to enjoy beautiful gardens and meet a variety of wildfowl and other critters eager to make friends – and it just keeps on improving. Plans for an education centre and café are close to completion and work is expected to start soon.

All developments are carefully designed to enhance visitors’ enjoyment of the park – strictly limiting any changes to those in keeping with the ambience of this Cotswold gem. While the surroundings are beautiful – and worth a visit in their own right – many people simply enjoy being close to the park’s inhabitants. There are so many enchanting characters to see and meet, and it’s the ability to get so close to all the creatures – and feed most of them – that ensures people return time and again. As well as the extensive collection of waterfowl and peafowl eager to feed from your hand, there’s the tame fallow deer, pygmy goats and, of course, the famous Prinknash reindeer – Rudolph and Prancer. There’s also miniature donkeys – Treacle and her mum, Toffee. This adorable duo love all the attention they can get – just like all the other friends you’ll meet at Prinknash. And, rapidly approaching his first birthday on 11th May is reindeer calf Cupid – so cute, and the only reindeer calf in Gloucestershire, so don’t miss the opportunity to capture some wonderful moments on camera. For further information on how enjoyable your next visit to Prinknash will be, or for details on hiring ‘Teal’, ‘Eider’ or the ‘Mad Hatter’s Marquee’ – telephone 01452 812727 or visit

Easter excitement at the Bijou Bird Park Mad Hatter’s Marquee Prinknash Bird & Deer Park are pulling out all the stops this Easter holiday, and for the second year is running the Mad Hatters Tea Party which will be held on Wednesday the 11th, Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th of April. The tea party was a runaway success last Easter and includes entry to the park, face painting and – of course – tea in the stunning marquee which has been set up in true Alice in Wonderland madness. Whilst peacocks hoot, fallow deer graze and the miniature donkeys bray, the scene has been set for children to dress up and really go into a frenzy with the best Alice or Mad Hatter outfit winning tickets to the Park’s next event – Fairy & Wizard World – in May. To book your places (£10 per child and £6.50 per adult) for this wonderful Easter event, please contact the park (details below) – but hurry, spaces are limited!

Now the Gold Cup is behind us the time really flies by! April is a busy old month, but so much depends on the weather. Start feeding your strawberries, raspberries etc. now as they will be flowering soon. A balanced fertiliser like Growmore or blood, fish and bone will promote successful flower and fruit production, good foliage and strong roots. Apply about 70g per sq metre. Now for ponds, it is a good time to reinstall any pumps and filters that have been removed over winter. Thin out oxygenating plants that are ‘taking over’. Divide and repot any marginal plants that have become pot bound and top dress with grit. Don’t add any fertiliser to ru n n er a pond plants as this will make B m a cr o ph y l l a algae growth worse. This is a good time to plant ornamental grasses in free-draining sandy soil, but if your soil doesn’t sound like this you can add plenty of grit to clay soils to improve the drainage. This month could possibly be really hot and dry as a drought has been predicted. If this is the case care will have to be taken with any shrubs and trees planted in the last few months. Evergreens don’t show any sign of drought until they are in a really bad way so care must be taken to give them a thorough watering once a week until they are a year old and should have a strong root system. Remember thorough watering means a good canful per plant and mulching around the soil will keep the water in (although don’t go right up to the stem as it can lead to rotting). Right I am starting a new series ‘Plant of the month’ which will showcase something that is at its best each month of the year. We start with the perennial Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ which is a beautiful plant for the front of a shady border, grown under deciduous trees and combined with spring bulbs and ferns. It has heart shaped green leaves, dusted with silver which appear followed by bright blue forgetme-not like flowers. It does best in moist soil but once established will tolerate dryer conditions and will spread to form a large clump. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden! ~ 07929 587751

Propert y News BUYING VERSUS LETTING The UK has always been one of the few countries with the most mortgaged properties – why is it us Brits seem driven to own our own properties? Our European counterparts have always rented and buying has never been at the forefront of their minds. So as we weather our current economical climate it’s no wonder that more and more people are turning to renting. But really this needs to be a choice of circumstances and this can be determined by many factors – changes in relationship, career move, growing family or relocation. So is it dead money renting, or a stress free lifestyle choice? Let’s give you the two very different sides to the coin and see which one you are. With house prices at a lull, if you have your deposit and mortgage approved it is a good time to buy. Buying is obvious for anyone wishing to capitalise on the current market and low house prices. Investing in the future and owning your own bricks and mortar, which is great if you have a secure career and income and want to make a house a home, giving security to your family. However footloose and fancy free may be your style, or more of a choice that needs to be made due to a lack of funds for a deposit – either way, what renting offers you is more flexibility. The positives of being able to move house at quite short notice with no worries or the burden of actually selling up. Relocation often sees people renting until they find out ur more about the area and it’s pretty much Yo ve hassle free apart from looking after the Mo house in general, although the landlord is responsible for the house maintenance. As a tenant you still have rights that mean you can never end up on the streets overnight for no good reason! Buying versus letting really comes down to your current situation and what you need to achieve – there is no right or wrong way, but talking to an expert in the know will help you evaluate your next move.

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

Holistic Policing Something that your local policing team have been keen to promote over the last 12 months or so is the use of Restorative Justice. RJ is a way of bringing those harmed by crime or conflict, and those responsible, into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a Tim Waterhouse part in repairing the harm Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector and finding a positive way forward. It includes using these processes formally (for example, a restorative justice conference involving victims and offenders), or informally, in the course of daily work (for example as used by a police officer to deal with low level crime on the beat, or a teacher, to manage a conflict between young people in the classroom). In criminal justice, restorative processes give victims the chance to tell offenders the real impact of their crime, to get answers to their questions, and an apology. It lets offenders understand the real impact of what they’ve done, to take responsibility and make amends. Restorative justice holds offenders to account for what they have done, personally and directly, and helps victims to get on with their lives. Some of the processes we have already put in place are already having an impact. Operation urination where we don’t arrest/fine for urinating in the street but bring the offenders back the next morning for a bucket and mop exercise, anger management courses run by a local martial arts expert which shows the implications of violence and the normal RJ's such as bringing neighbours together to discuss disputes can on the face of it look silly but can have huge implications on their lives. This Constabulary has also gone one step further: COP’s - Community Orientated Policing where a degree of sense and practicality has returned, with some sensible discretion thrown in. Credit must go to the Constabularies Commanders for this. It gives officers an opportunity to think about what is best for the victim, and not just arrest. But don’t be thinking we do not arrest anymore, we do, but this gives us the opportunity to think a bit more holistically about the problem. Anyway, enough of me, keep them doors and windows locked and keep safe. Gloucestershire Constabulary
