In Time’s Wake for cello & piano


Program Note This work was commissioned by and dedicated to the deeply gifted cellist and friend Elizabeth Simkin. I was just finishing up my days as a graduate student at Cornell, when Liz approached me about composing a work for her. It couldn’t have come at a better time, as I was just finding my way, moving to New York City and beginning my career as a composer. It now seems like the good old days. The great worry then was Y2K! In Time’s Wake is a rather virtuosic work, featuring long cello melodies over arpeggiated and sparkling piano accompaniments. It is an expression of my anxiety and longing at that time.
