Milk of the Spirit By Stephen M Jeffreys

I entered into the first grade in nineteen sixty-two Mrs. Powell was our teacher at John Randolph Elementary School We would stand beside our desks At the beginning of each day Pledge allegiance to our country’s flag Then bow our heads and pray “Our Father which art in heaven Hollowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven” And with thankful hearts we ask that you Would give us our daily bread It was the word of God and the milk of the spirit That kept our young hearts fed Well that has been so many years ago And now there are boards on the windows and doors Only silence fills the halls and classrooms With dust upon the floors And I have grown with two boys of my own And soon they will be off to school But it troubles my heart to think that there may be no

Flags, prayers or golden rules If I could instill in them just one thing My prayer is that it would be this A hunger for Christ burning deep in their hearts These words whispering from their lips “Our Father which art in heaven Hollowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven” And with thankful hearts we ask that you Would give us our daily bread It will be the word of God and the milk of the spirit To keep their young hearts fed The word of God and the milk of the spirit To keep all of our hearts fed ©1996 Jeffreys
