ARS SACD 38107 Price Code 449 Label Code V WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART: THREE ARIAS & BALLO: FROM ASCANIO IN ALBA/SINFONIAS Symphony No 32 in G major K 318 Three arias of Ascanio and “Ballo“ from the opera Ascanio in Alba K 111 (Cara, lontano ancora Ballo: Allegretto/ Andante con moto/Gavotte /Adagio/Allegro - Al mio ben mi veggio avanti - Ballo: Allegretto/Andante grazioso/Allegretto/Allegretto - Ah, di sì nobil Alma) Symphony No 39 in E fl at major K 543 ARTISTS: Mattias Rexroth, countertenor. Staatsorchester Darmstadt, Constantin Trinks, conductor. When Empress Maria Theresa arranged the marriage of her son Ferdinand to Maria Beatrice d‘Este, it was a matter of course that the wedding festivities in Milan in October 1771 were to include two large-scale opera performances. The commission went to two musicians who could not have been 675754041250 more different: the 72 years old, highly respected opera composer Johann Adolph Hasse, and the fifteen year old wunderkind Mozart, who was responsible for composing a so-called “festa teatrale“. Mozart was also instructed to write the ballet music or “Ballo.” As fate would have it, nothing remained of this music beside the bass part. The research of Mozart specialist Wolfgang Plath enabled the Russian composer Anton Safronov to reconstruct the ballet music. The CD also includes three arias from Ascanio sung by the countertenor Matthias Rexroth and two symphonies by Mozart.

BIS SACD 1976 Label Code 419 Price Code P DVOŘÁK – SYMPHONY NO.8 Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No.8 in G major, Op. 88 Zlatý Kolovrat (The Golden Spinning Wheel), Op.109 Scherzo capriccioso, Op. 66 ARTISTS: Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra / Claus Peter Flor With his Seventh Symphony, Dvořák had proved that he could compose a ‘respectable’ symphony (as he himself termed it), and had done so to both critical and public acclaim. Four years later, when he began to work on its successor, he apparently felt free to return to a more familiar idiom, and after the serious Seventh – which Dvořák at one stage had considered giving 675754041038 the nickname 'Tragic' – Symphony No.8 was a lighter work, with its roots firmly planted in the composer’s beloved Czech folklore. It is probably the freest of his mature symphonies from a formal point of view, and has interesting parallels with Mahler’s First Symphony, which was premièred shortly after Dvořák had completed his own work. Imitations of the sounds of nature, pastoral subjects and fanfares feature in both symphonies, and both evoke a funeral march and a chorale. The work is here coupled with the symphonic poem The Golden Spinning Wheel, based on an epic poem by the Czech poet Karel Erben. Complete with a wicked stepmother, a dismembering and a magic spinning wheel of gold, this rather cruel fairy-tale is followed by the shorter Scherzo capriccioso. This consistently light-hearted piece was actually composed during one of the darkest periods of Dvořák’s life following the death of his mother in 1882. All of the other works written at this time – including Symphony No.7 – are characterized by a dark, even tragic mood and it is as if Dvořák in this Scherzo felt the need to once again express unrestrained joy. Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra have just released their performance of Symphony No.7 – a recording which has received top marks (‘10/10’) on the website Classics Today France, whose reviewer described it as ‘a striking disc’ offering ‘a revitalized vision of these major orchestral works’.

BIS SACD 1993 Label Code 419 Price Code P CURSE UPON IRON: WORKS FOR MALE CHOIR BY VELJO TORMIS Veljo Tormis (b. 1930): Incantatio maris aestuosi [Incantation for a Stormy Sea]; Kord me tuleme tagasi (Meie varjud) [Once We Will Reappear]; Kolm mul oli kaunist sõna [I Had Three Beautiful Words]; Vastlalaulud [Shrovetide Songs]; Pikse litaania [Litany to Thunder]; Viru vanne [The Viru Oath]; Helletused [Childhood Memory – Herding Calls]; Raua needmine [Curse upon Iron]; Muistse mere laulud [Songs of the Ancient Sea]; Hamleti laulud [Hamlet’s Songs]; Kaksikpühendus (Diptühhon) [Double Dedication (Diptych)] ARTISTS: Orphei Drängar male-voice choir / Cecilia Rydinger Alin. Elin Rombo, soprano; Magnus Sjögren, tenor; Gunnar Sundberg, tenor; Henrik Stolare, baritone; Andreas Alin, flute; Magnus Einarsson, bass drum; Folke Alin, shaman drum.

A modern shaman is how Veljo Tormis (b.1930) has been described. In his large production, chiefly composed for a cappella choir, he utilizes ancient chants and magic charms, as well as the typically Estonian runic songs, regilaulud. Indeed Curse upon Iron, his best-known score, even includes a shaman drum. Much of the music of Tormis, who began composing during the 1950s, mirrors his steadfast devotion to an Estonian identity in the face of Soviet occupation, with traditional ways of life, such as farming and fishing, resonating in pieces such as Helletused – based on ancient herding calls – Spell upon Flax (from the three Shrovetide songs) and Songs of the Ancient Sea. But there are also works, such as the two Hamlet’s Songs, that seem to echo the bleak mood of Soviet Estonia, while The Viru Oath is one of Tormis’s most overtly political compositions, written in 1980 during the so-called ‘stagnation period’ in which the thaw following Stalin’s death was halted. With Stars, from Kaksikpühendus (Double Dedication), the disc closes on a more lyrical and personal note – another strand in the composer’s rich repertoire. The informative liner notes to this selection of works for male-voice choir composed between 1962 and 1996 are by Mimi S. Daitz, author of a biography of Veljo Tormis. As she explains, even when Tormis does not use traditional tunes, he incorporates their scales and intervals into his melodies and harmonies, thus creating a unique sound. Divisions of voices into separate lines play an important part in Tormis’s orchestration of voices, and another characteristic is his rhythmic ingenuity. The various demands this places on the performers are amply fulfilled by Cecilia Rydinger Alin and Orphei Drängar, described in Choir and Organ as ‘a tremendous choir, with superb technique and an immense, expressive range’. Further variety is added by a number of guest soloists, including the internationally acclaimed soprano Elin Rombo.

COVIELLO SACD 31209 Label Code 192 Price Code V FELIX MENDELSSOHN: SYMPHONY NO. 2/PSALM 42 Symphony No. 2 'Lobgesang' (Hymn of Praise) for soloists, chorus and orchestra Psalm 42 'Wie der Hirsch schreit' (As the hart panteth) for soprano, chorus, orchestra ARTISTS: Mayer/Hagopian/Adler/Bosch/ Symphony Orchestra Aachen. The symphonic cantata ‘Lobgesang’ (Hymn of praise) is Mendelssohn’s most ambitious commissioned work, which was first performed on 26 June 1840 in Leipzig’s Thomaskirche under the direction of the composer. The occasion was the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

Today this work and the setting of the Psalm 42 are seen as a successful example of the symphonic conception of Mendelssohn’s sacred music. The composer wanted to bridge the distance of concert hall and church. The live recording marked the departure of Marcus Bosch as musical director of the city of Aachen, in addition, as of the 2011/ 2012 season he is music director of the city of Nuremberg.

The three string quartets selected for this recording were dedicated to Pleyel‘s friend Luigi Boccherini. BIS CD 1846 Label Code 001 Price Code P KOSHKIN – MEGARON CONCERTO Nikita Koshkin (b.1956): Megaron Concerto for guitar and string orchestra (2005); Guitar Quintet (2004); L’istesso tempo for cello and guitar (2010); Polka Papandreou for guitar and string orchestra (2006) ARTISTS: Elena Papandreou, guitar. Singapore Symphony Orchestra / Lan Shui. New Hellenic Quartet. Angelos Liakakis cello. For some fifteen years, the Russian composer Nikita Koshkin and the Greek guitarist Elena Papandreou have enjoyed a rewarding collaboration, with solo pieces such as the Guitar Sonata and Kyparissous, both from 1998, among the earliest fruits. Dedicated to Elena Papandreou, these works formed part of a solo recital released by her in 2003, along with what probably remains the composer’s most famous piece: Usher Waltz. Koshkin’s music typically combines drama with humour and parody, and regularly includes references to legends and fairy-tales, as well as to music of other periods or genres. He often uses extended playing techniques achieving avantgarde effects, but is also inspired by popular music. On the present disc, all four works are world 675754041342 première recordings, and three of them were written with Elena Papandreou in mind. The Megaron Concerto was the result of a commission from the Athens concert hall which has given its name to the concerto – a commission which inspired Koshkin to explore the concept of a dialogue between ancient Greek music and later Western music. But as the composer himself willingly concedes, his Russian roots are also discernible, in a certain depth and dramatic development which in this piece, and in the large-scale Quintet, is reinforced through the use of a string ensemble. The most recent composition in the programme is the duo L’istesso tempo from 2010, commissioned in order to supplement the limited repertoire for cello and guitar and also to accompany the other works on this recording. Its title translates as ‘the same tempo’, reflecting the circumstance that despite changes of metre and perceived changes of tempo, the duration of a quaver remains constant throughout the piece. The disc closes with Polka Papandreou, a brief and light-hearted piece performed here in a version for guitar and string orchestra.

BIS CD 1855 Label Code 001 Price Code P THE TRIO SONATA IN 18TH-CENTURY FRANCE François Couperin: L’Impériale (from Les Nations); Charles Dollé: Sonata in G minor, Op.1 No.6; Jean-Marie Leclair: Sonata No.3 in G minor, Op.13 No.6; Joseph Bodin de Boismortier: Trio in E minor, Op.37 No.2; Jean-Pierre Guignon: Sonata in D major, Op.4 No.2 ARTISTS: London Baroque With the previous installment of their survey of the trio sonata during the 17th and 18th centuries, the four members of London Baroque offered up what the website described as ‘a delightful palette full of grace and esprit’, presenting music by composers active in 18th-century England. Crossing the Channel, they have now arrived in France, and a musical environment 675754041359 undergoing rapid changes following the death of Louis XIV in 1715. The rigours of the Grand Siècle were relaxing and the stiff resistance against the Italian influences of Corelli was weakening. In 1725 François Couperin published his famous Apothéose de Lulli, in which he advocated a fusion of the Italian and French styles, and the following year saw the collection Les Nations, which included L’Impériale recorded here. In it Couperin continued his mission, combining an Italian-style sonata with a sequence of dances in the French manner. Jean-Marie Leclair and his colleague (and great rival) Jean-Pierre Guignon took this one step further – Leclair studied and worked in Turin before making his mark in France, and Guignon was in fact born in Italy, as Giovanni Pietro Ghignone, and only arrived in France when he was in his twenties. Both of these rather extravagant characters were fêted violinists as well as composers, and wrote music mainly for their own instrument in an often virtuosic style. Their complete opposite, at least in terms of life-style, was Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, who was not known as a performer, and instead managed to make a very good living by composing a large number of small-scale works aimed at wealthy amateurs.

BIS CD 1884 Label Code 001 Price Code P HAKAN HARDENBERGER PLAYS GRUBER & SCHWERTSIK: WORKS FOR TRUMPET AND ORCHESTRA HK Gruber: 3 MOB Pieces (1968/1999 – version for trumpet & chamber orchestra); Busking (2007) for trumpet, accordion, banjo and string orchestra; Kurt Schwertsik: Divertimento Macchiato, Op. 99 (2007) ARTISTS: Håkan Hardenberger, trumpet; Swedish Chamber Orchestra / HK Gruber: Mats Bergström, banjo; Claudia Buder, accordion The common denominator of the three works presented here is the soloist Håkan Hardenberger. In 1999, the celebrated trumpet player asked HK Gruber to arrange his 3 MOB Pieces for trumpet and orchestra, and eight years later Gruber wrote the concerto Busking while his long-time collaborator Kurt Schwertsik wrote Divertimento Macchiato, both on Hardenberger’s initiative. In the 1960s Schwertsik and Gruber became known as ambassadors of the ‘Third Viennese School’ – a grouping which originated as a reaction against the total serialism of Darmstadt-centred avantgarde. One of the first manifestations of this was the ‘MOB art & tone ART’ Ensemble, in which the two composers and their friends performed new music of a deliberately informal, un-solemn sort. With influences as diverse as the neo-classicism of Stravinsky, the Beatles and the cabaret music by 675754041007 Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill, the MOB Pieces, composed in 1968, are a perfect illustration of this. Gruber’s work has always shown a strong connection with various kinds of popular music, and his concerto Busking is another example. In each of its three movements the soloist plays a trumpet in a different key, with the accompaniment of an accordion, a banjo and strings. Often the accordion and banjo join the trumpet as a solo group, with a resulting sound evocative of street musicians and New Orleans jazz. On the surface, Schwertsik has remained closer to home, by taking recourse to a form typical of the classicism of Vienna during Mozart's days. But the title Divertimento is deceptive – Schwertsik adds both melancholy and defiance to a work that appears, on the face of it, to offer easy-on-the-ear entertainment, and the five-movement work ends with an epilogue for the trumpet alone – a soliloquy almost Mahlerian in its sense of loneliness and desolation.

The name probably means ‘large kithara’, after the instrument played by the Classical Greek poets, and it was first 675754040994 developed as a bass lute in order to accompany singing and recitative – indeed it appears to have become the favourite instrument in Italy for accompanying the voice by 1600. It also enjoyed a short-lived but rich flowering as a solo instrument, however, to which the three virtuosi of the album title all contributed greatly, as performers as well as composers. Between 1604 and 1640, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger (also known as Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger), Alessandro Piccinini and Bellerofonte Castaldi published a number of collections of chitarrone music, from which Jakob Lindberg has chosen some favourite dances, arias, toccatas and passacaglias. Combined into seven suites, they provide rich opportunity to enjoy the particular timbre and the special playing techniques of this splendid instrument, the chitarrone. Highly regarded both for his live performances and his many recordings, Jakob Lindberg has a long-standing interest in the many varieties of lutes, including lute mandorée, orpharion and archlute, and has now dedicated himself to researching their relative – research which informs both the performances and Lindberg’s own liner notes.

Nordic Woman is a compilation album created by Norwegian-Pakistani/Afghan music producer and activist Deeyah featuring female artists from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland who draw their inspiration from the various and distinctive styles of traditional Nordic music. Nordic Woman is the first music collection in an ongoing WOMAN series dedicated to celebrating women's voices and musical heritage from around the world. Each album, Deeyah explains, is a journey through traditional music forms as expressed through women"s voices and women"s artistry, and is an exploration of women"s experiences and circumstances, drawing attention to women"s position in the world today, their accomplishments, struggles and the barriers they still face.

"It was natural for me to start the series with a tribute to women’s creativity in the place I was born. Growing up in a Nordic country, and seeing what was possible for women to achieve, has not only formed an essential part of my artistic perspective, but has informed my own personal commitment to women"s rights," said Deeyah, "so the first release in this series had to be Nordic Woman."

Those who have cherished his earlier stereo cycle for its magical spontaneity will find Kempff's qualities even more intensely conveyed in this mono set, recorded between 1951 and 1956." SIGNUM UK 285 Label Code 303 Price Code D JONATHAN DOVE: THERE WAS A CHILD ARTISTS: CBSO Children's Chorus, City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Joan Rodgers, soprano, Toby Spence, tenor. Simon Halsey, conductor. Jonathan Dove wrote There Was a Child as a tribute to a friend’s son who died tragically young. Filled with both joyous celebration and heartfelt emotion, it’s a big, warm-hearted modern masterpiece in the spirit of Britten and vaughan Williams – following in an evergreen english tradition and featuring the combined forces of the CBSO and CBSO Chorus, Youth Chorus and Junior Chorus with soloists Joan Rodgers and Toby Spence.

A review of the concert from which this recording was taken: "Jonathan Dove’s There Was a Child is a major addition to the choral repertoire, and will surely be taken up by societies up and down the country, perhaps with reduced orchestration for economy’s sake. Emotionally soul-baring, sharing an umbilical cord with Finzi’s Intimations of Immortality and even Dies Natalis, this panorama of a young life draws texts from so many fine poets and therefore demands consummate clarity of presentation.” -Birmingham Post

SIGNUM UK 295 Label Code 303 Price Code D THE WORD UNSPOKEN ARTISTS: Gallicantus, Gabriel Crouch, director William Byrd, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, was a confirmed and practising catholic who worshipped in defiance of the Queen. His status and perhaps even his life was preserved thanks partly to the undeniable mastery of his music, and to the fact that he was careful to maintain an output of music appropriate for a Protestant Rite (simple and English) as well as a Catholic one (florid and Latin). Byrd was by no means the only major Catholic composer working in England during these years. Furthermore, there were English composers whose faith drove them to work abroad, as well as foreign composers who offered sympathy and encouragement to English catholics. Included in this latter category was the Flemish composer Phillipe De Monte who entered into a fascinating compositional correspondence with Byrd. Verses of Psalm 136 ‘Super Flumina Babylonis’ (containing many allegorical references to the plight of catholics unable to practice their faith openly) were set 635212029527 to music and exchanged, in what is now seen as an encoded message of mutual support and friendship between brothers in faith. The texts reveal the Catholic community’s sense of isolation (“How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” – Quomodo Cantabimus) and bereavement (“Jerusalem is wasted” – Ne Irascaris), and the elaborate, poetic nature of the encoded messages distributed within it through music.

TALANTON 90009 Label Code 477 Price Code D JOSEPH HAYDN - INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC ON THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF OUR REDEEMER ON THE CROSS ARTISTS: Laetitia Quartet Joseph Haydn wrote this Passion music as a commission from the bishops of Cadiz, Spain. To be heard after each reading of the individual bible passages is a piece of music that helps internalize “The Seven Last Words of Our Redeemer on the Cross.” Because of the meditative nature, it was a challenge for Haydn to compose varied and characteristic movements. However, he succeeded in a subtle manner. Haydn himself considered the work to be one of his most successful, and even during the last stages of composing it, he made an arrangement of the original orchestral work for string quartet.

The latter version is to be heard on this TALANTON release by Leipzig’s Laetitia Quartet, which is made up of musicians from the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the MDR Symphony Orchestra. The biblical texts are read by Johannes Jenichen. A welcome change from the numerous Baroque Passion settings, yet, at the same time, a Haydn rediscovery for the whole year!

80 Minutes Of Time-Proven Quality With A Refreshed Sound!

On May 16, 2004, the station Radio Beat inducted three Czech legends into the new Beat Hall of Fame: Vladimir Misik, Jiri Schelinger (in memoriam) and the band Blue Effect, whose profile double CD was released immediately afterwards. The first of the discs was compiled on the basis of Radio Beat listeners voting for their favorite songs, the second was put together by the band’s frontman Radim Hladik and the journalists Radek Diestler and Vojtech Lindaur. It features five rarity concert recordings made in 1973, the composition Golem from the long-unavailable LP Stare Povestie Ceske (Old Czech Legends) and, most notably, a large part of the studio recordings of a series of musical settings of Jiri Wolker’s poems, which the band recorded for Pilsen’s Alfa theater in 1979. The extensive booklet comes with unique photographs, a detailed calendar, the producers’ notes and texts written by the band’s contemporaries Ondrej Konrad and Vojtech Lindaur. ARTISTS: Vladimir Misik & Etc… The second part of last year’s acclaimed Vladimir Misik 4-CD collection! The first four, truly legendary Misik albums are followed by a quartet of vintage recordings dating from the end of the 1980s and first half of the 1990s. The classic repertoire from the previous two decades is supplemented by more recent songs created at the time of the newly-gained freedom, a period that saw a deluge of foreign music that ensured after the Velvet Revolution. Yet amid this, Misik could draw upon a bold songwriting and band continuity. His rock songs are as immaculately penned as ever, although the arrangements may seem to be more acoustic, electric, and electronic. Although Etc… undergo occasional lineup changes, the band’s hallmark sound remains largely unchanged.
