Picture Books The Secret Lives of Princesses

by Philippe Lechermeier, illustrated by Rébecca Dautremer Go beyond Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella! Some princesses are well-known to all children—but others, equally magical (and sometimes a lot funnier) have remained anonymous, mysterious, and far from the fairy-tale crowd.

May 2010

Now these captivating ladies are finally stepping out of the shadows where they’ve remained hidden for far too long. With wit, sublime humor, and beautiful art, The Secret Lives of Princesses introduces a bevy of royal daughters to the court of young readers. While it alludes to some of their more famous sisters, this large and lusciously illustrated compendium presents such unique and unforgettable characters as the petite Princess Claire Voyant, who can see very far into tomorrow (but muddles her predictions); Princess Oblivia, who forgets everything and misses all her appointments; Princess Tangra-La, who does any dance that comes her way; and Princess Babbling Brooke, who chatters on about everything and nothing. Plus, you’ll learn about such princessy matters as the language of fans; coats of arms; and how not to offend dangerous fairies who cast evil spells.

Ages 7 and UP 96 pages (all in color) 10 5/8 x 11 7/8 JUVENILE FICTION/General

Poetic, often humorous, and always enchanting, this is the perfect collection for princess-loving girls who long for more than just the traditional fairy tale.

 Little girls love princesses—and this is right for all ages, including the slightly older child who’s outgrown fairy tales  L ush, eye-catching art and a bold, vivid design, with great variety on every page  S ly, funny, and slightly wry in tone, kids and their parents will enjoy reading it together

About the Author MERCER MAYER attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. But after years of pursuing other work, he returned to his first love, and received his first big break when a family friend gave him the names of some of the most reputable children’s book editors. Mayer set out with a bag filled with his sketches and doodles, and luck was with him: he was asked to illustrate The Gillygoofang for The Dial Press and Outside My Window for Harper and Row. The first book that was truly his own was A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog (The Dial Press, 1967) followed by his classic picture book There’s a Nightmare in My Closet a year later. In 1976, he joined Golden Publishing and soon began publishing his Little Critter® and Little Monster® books. These series became very successful and contain the work for which he is best known.

A Read-and-Play Program for Babies and Toddlers tm

Newborn to Six Months SiX to Twelve MONTHS

Twelve to eIGHTEEN MONTHS

eIGHTEEN MONTHS to Two Years

New Two YEARS to THREE Years

TWO to THREE YEARS

Babies have amazing brains that soak up knowledge, doubling in size during the first 12 months. Every time they receive stimulation—through sight and sound, smell and touch, love and cuddles—they become smarter and more aware of the world around them. According to the National Commission on Reading, reading aloud to children is “the single most important intervention” that parents can make in ensuring their child’s later reading success. Carefully leveled by age and ability, the Begin Smart™ program will expand the emerging motor and cognitive skills of children from birth to three years.

All Begin Smart books have been tested and meet ASTM safety standards and the new CPSIA guidelines.

One book for boys and one for girls makes potty-time perfect!

Board Books Raindrops

A Shower of Colors by Chiêu Anh Urban, illustrated by Viviana Garofoli Look—a rainbow of colors is showering down on the animals!

April 2010

This very simple, beautiful, and innovative concept book shows children how primary colors magically blend to create secondary ones. Die-cut raindrops with a see-through shaded acetate appear throughout; when the acetates are layered on top of each other, a new color emerges! So it’s easy to see—and understand—how blue and red make purple; red and yellow make orange; blue and yellow make green....and how, all together, they create a gorgeous rainbow!

$8.95 (Canada $11.50) Board 978-1-4027-6900-9

The delightful art showcases a cute and cuddly-looking group of animals trying to escape the rain—and each one has an adorable accessory, be it a pinwheel, fancy hat, or bright umbrella.

Puppies, Pussycats & Other Friends

by Gyo Fujikawa

by Gyo Fujikawa

It’s play day for Gyo Fujikawa’s adorable group of toddlers! They’re sliding and hiding, running and splashing, tumbling and wrestling, and having a blast. But as night falls and the moon rises, it’s good to be quiet, too.

“Wouldn’t you love to have a furry, fuzzy, feathery, or slithery smooth friend?” What an irresistible combination: a menagerie of Gyo Fujikawa’s most adorable animals with their human companions! Mrs. Cat and her kitten family parade with a little girl, fuzzy puppies hug and snuggle, a gentle fawn comes by to say hello, and an elephant gives a small boy a ride while carrying another child on her trunk. A charming final picture shows several children with some small furry and feathery friends.

It’s an imaginative invitation to fun, games, and friendship that no child can resist!

The Story of Doctor Dolittle #6: Doctor Dolittle Goes Home

Come to a snowy land far away and meet an Inuit boy named Quiquern. He dreams of becoming a great hunter, but everyone just laughs at him because he’s so small. Then a terrible storm threatens his village with starvation—and Quiquern and his little sled dog may be the only ones who can save the day.

Once upon a time, there was a place called Seal Haven where all the Arctic seals lived—including a very special pup named Kotick. No one was faster than he at swimming, diving, and catching a fish. But when the hunters arrive, this brave little seal has to face a dangerous challenge: finding a good home where the seals can be safe.

by Hugh Lofting

Pirates, sharks, and a leaky boat, too! There’s danger ahead for Doctor Dolittle and his brave animal crew as they try to return home to Puddleby. Will the doctor find a way to outwit the Barbary Dragon and his band of dangerous sea brigands? It won’t be easy, but with the help of a few good friends, they just might!

Now that they’ve defeated the pirates, Doctor Dolittle is sure they’ll have smooth sailing to Puddleby. But wait…what’s that knock, knock, knocking on the ship? It looks as if a very unexpected guest is on board: a little boy! And he doesn’t know the name of his island home. How will they ever get him back to his family?

Fiction & Literature The Canterbury Tales (No Fear)

The Scarlet Letter (No Fear)

Why be frightened of the most wonderful collection of tales ever written? No Fear: The Canterbury Tales makes it simple for students to love Chaucer’s masterpiece in all its humor, bawdiness, and poignancy. It features the original text on the left-hand page, side-by-side with an easy-to-understand translation on the right. In addition, there is a complete list of characters with descriptions and plenty of helpful commentary.

Have you ever tried to read The Scarlet Letter but realized midway through the second sentence that you were already lost? No Fear: The Scarlet Letter will change all that. No need to worry about losing the thread anymore: whenever Hawthorne’s sentences become too convoluted to follow, or you can’t figure out exactly what he’s talking about, simply look across at the right-hand page and a simplified, modernized text—using the kind of English we actually speak today—will set you back on track. Soon you’ll be reading Hawthorne’s own words fearlessly—and actually enjoying it.

 Part of a very successful series  The Canterbury Tales is a classic of literature, but the middle English makes it difficult to read; this helps students understand every nuance

 Part of a very successful series  The Scarlet Letter is a required book in many high school and university English classes, and this will help students understand Hawthorne’s classic novel

Sterling Biographies®: Muhammad Ali

Iron Horse of Baseball by James Buckley, Jr. A streak of 2,130 consecutive games played. Several World Series wins—including a fourgame sweep. An American League single-season batting record that stood until this year. And that’s only a few of Lou Gehrig’s many achievements. Though illness sapped his strength, it never killed his spirit.

King of the Ring by Stephen Timblin He floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee, darting and dancing his way to boxing’s heavyweight world championship. In the process, the fleet-footed and motormouthed fighter became King of the Ring and more: a cultural icon who dominated headlines, generated controversy, and enthralled even those audiences uninterested in the sport.

James Buckley Jr. is one of America’s leading sports authors for young readers, with more than 50 books to his credit, including biographies of Péle, Muhammad Ali, Venus and Serena Williams, Bill Bradley, and Roberto Clemente. Baseball is his specialty, and his books on the sport include Eyewitness Baseball, The Visual Dictionary of Baseball, Baseball: A Celebration, and Play Ball: The Official Major League Guide for Young Players. A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he has worked for Sports Illustrated and NFL Publishing. He lives in Southern California.

Non-Fiction: Games & Activities Chess in Action

From First Attack to Checkmate by Paul Mantell and Dean Ippolito, International Master of Chess illustrated by Giacomo Marchesi The coolest chess book for kids ever!

May 2010

This is not your typical beginner’s chess book! Written by longtime children’s book author Paul Mantell, and International Master of Chess Dean Ippolito, Chess in Action captures the excitement of the battle: the thrill of staying one step ahead of your opponent, of launching a surprise attack, of drawing your adversary into a trap. In fun and fresh language, this guide helps young players imagine themselves as generals of their own armies, warriors geared for the fight. At the same time, it conveys all the basic rules and strategies in a clear, straightforward way that provides young players with a well-rounded introduction to the game.

$14.95 (Canada $19.50) Hardcover with Jacket 978-1-4027-6046-4

The book includes: Setup and Soldiers • Basic Principles • The Opening • The Middle Game • The Endgame • The Wide World of Chess • Sample Games

 Coauthored by an International Chess Master and a well-published children’s author  Action-packed 3-D computer graphics that look like the pieces are actually interacting  Full glossary of important chess terms

Dean Ippolito is one of forty-eight International Chess Masters in the United States. He has won All America Team Member ten times, the National Championship eleven times, and was voted New Jersey Chess Federation’s Teacher of the Year. One of America’s foremost and most recognizable chess players, he has been interviewed on many television programs both here and abroad, including Inside Edition, and has been featured in many magazine articles, including Sports Illustrated and Boys Life. In the past seven years, Mr. Ippolito has coached more than thirty nationally ranked scholastic players.
