27th February 09:30 - 14:30 Developing Numeracy Skills for Pupils with Down Syndrome Lucy Clark & Julie Knight of Inclusively Down

This course is aimed at all staff working with children

and

young

people

with

Down

syndrome. This session will cover the key elements of

developing Numeracy skills, why children with Down

syndrome

may

find

this

subject

challenging, the use of manipulatives to support learning and what strategies / resources can be used to support access to the curriculum.

1st May 09:30 - 14:30 Speech, Language and Communication (Primary & Secondary) Becky Baxter of LETS Go!

The day will include an overview of the research on speech, language and communication development in children with Down syndrome. We will focus on extending the early communication strengths seen in children with Down syndrome and targeting later, more complex communication skills, supporting friendships and interactions. Strategies to target vocabulary and language understanding and production across the curriculum will be included as well as improving speech clarity and intelligibility. Common difficulties and error patterns will be addressed as well as looking at strategies to e n c o u r a g e motivation and d e v e l o p i n g engaging activities that will support generalisation within school and home settings.
