Stephanie Srour

My name is Stephanie Srour* Welcome to my portfolio! Shall we begin with an introduction?

*pronounced screw

Howdy! Now that you can pronounce my last name, I'll tell you a little more about myself. I am a reflection of my surroundings, so I ensure to constantly be around the beautiful, the intense, the creative and the innovative—this keeps me grounded and quiet, but the passion gets me loud and animated. Seeing the way people respond to pieces of design fuels my motivation. Simply getting that little smile crosses a box on my list. I hope I can do the same for you with my selection of works completed during my time at Billy Blue College of Design. I keep one eye always open, and take everything step by step.

So, let’s begin.

Project 01 Blabar/Print Design/ Symbol Design/Packaging

Simply, the task was to create a set of instructions using only symbols, adapting the IKEA method of communicating (however, it actually had to be understandable). We envisioned IKEA’s new buildable blueberry tarts, and expanded it to cover the complete user experience. As symbol designer, I applied everything I knew of semiotics and signs, and how different cultures and groups of people understand certain things. As well as heavy research into IKEA’s symbol design and reasoning, which upon research and group opinion, we wanted to improve upon.

Project: Epneo Dipping Oils (2015) Client: Billy Blue College of Design

Project 02 Epneo/Packaging/ Print Design

Given the task to create a brand and package design for 3 bottles as a gift set, Epneo (greek for infuse), was born out of a love for graphic art and my stomach. They surround an illustrator named Naydeen, who decided in order to connect with more people, she will venture into creating and designing dipping oils to be shared in the spirit of friendship. The bottles are designed in all ways to stand out from the crowd, with heavy observations into trends in shape and design in all oils. Since it was a relatively non-existent market, there was much fun to be had with the design, and the shape of the bottles.

Project: Nookcase Design Studio (2014) Client: Billy Blue College of Design

Project 03 Nookcase/Print Design/Studio Design

In an attempt to prepare us for studio lives, we were tasked with creating our own studio, ensuring that we understood the mechanics and expenses, to present in front of some financial backers. Viola! Nookcase is the result of four girls with attitude dressed in pink. Rather than trying to mush our personalities into a standard tone of voice, we embraced our obvious differences and created a home for us to create in, and clients to join us. I stood as the position of creative director in a studio where the aim was to produce outstanding, functional and kickass design.

Project: Legs On The Wall (2015) Client: Billy Blue College of Design

Project 04 Legs on the Wall/ EDM/Digital Design/Print Design

Not-for-profit, physical theatre company, Legs on the Wall, have been around for thirty one years, but now need help with communicating to and keeping up with the various sectors of their market. A very broad brief with budget as the main restriction. The task was used to explore areas of design I’ve never crossed yet, in particular the digital side. An EDM roll out strategy was created, with a focus on being engaging enough that the audience will remember the company and be aware of them.

Project 05 Cadigal Reserve/ Print Design/Branding & Identity

We were given a park that was suffering from an identity drought, with the task to give the Summer Hill Reserve a rebirth. After visiting the park multiple times and absorbing the personalities and the habits surrounding, a tone of voice was developed, allowing the park to act as the neighborhood backyard, a place to step to the side and breathe. Through online and physical research and a couple of interviews, we analysed the trends of when people come and why, and created a feel that would fit in the area. We remained authentic to the park, rather than making it something it isn’t. Let’s explore a little!

As part of a hypothetical series of exhibitions on design movements through time, Text and Image: The Purity of the Text to the Promiscuity of the Intertext (Yes, the full name was to be included in the logo), explored the way Postmodernism defaced the structures of Modernism. The visuals and in particular, the typography, were to be a representation of their interdependent relationship. Using the knowledge of the grids and the necessity of order of the modernists, matched with the need and passion for expression of the post modernists, this colourful mess of structure was created.

Project: Reverse Your Thinking (2015) Client: Billy Blue College of Design

Project 06 Reverse Your Thinking/ Campaign Design/Print Design

The City of Sydney are about to begin an official roll out for their Reverse Vending Machines, after a successful trial. To initiate this, they want to spread the word out using clever and effective design. The idea of a Reverse Vending Machine, and our strategy formed quickly after visiting the machine. The aim was to change behaviours and getting people to use the Reverse Vending Machine, so, reverse their thinking. The designs took on a very surreal approach, as the idea was to get intrigue people and get them to stop, take in the message, and implement it.

Project: Personal Client: Myself

Project 08 Personal/Illustrations

To give more of an insight into myself, I’ve collated some of my illustrations. We all know the power of design in communicating beautiful ideas, that’s why we’re in this industry. But there’s also power in the way we can communicate ourselves visually. On this note, we'll end here. Thank you for viewing my portfolio, hopefully you have enjoyed what you've seen, and I've given you that giggle or smile I hoped for earlier! Until next time!
