Portfolio Thabo Chaka

introduction Thabo Chaka has spent years honing his skills by studying various subjects and now wants to share his expertise and experience with other youth. Thabo Chaka is a young dĂŠcor designer who is very passionate about art. He believes that everything is not just beautiful, but it is unique in that it has its own definition. He likes to challenge himself artistically and is never afraid to cross boundaries when it comes to being innovative.

biography Tell us about yourself. I am Thabo Chaka. I was born and bred in Bloemfontein. I like to describe myself as a fun-loving individual with a superior artistic mind and creativity. I matriculated in 1995 at Lekgulong High School, then went on to study fashion design at Victoria Toma Fashion Institute for three years where I completed my fashion design training and was awarded a certificate. After completing my fashion training, I furthered my studies at the Central University of Technology (CUT), where I pursued management courses. When I could not merge the fashion designing and what I was studying, I decided to change my studies to something more appropriate to what I had trained for, and subsequently reregistered to study graphic design. I was so smitten by the artistic bug that, after two years at the Wits Technikon, I decided to pursue art dĂŠcor full-time, partly due to requests from corporate clients to focus primarily on the work I was doing for them. While working as a signage artist for companies in Gauteng, a further urge to break off and do it on my own led me to partner with socialite and businessman, Lebo Mabalane, with whom we decided to open an art cafĂŠ in Midrand. The art cafĂŠ became the place to be in and around the Midrand area; in other words it became the Mecca of entertainment and art. The sales and the art lovers' support were phenomenal. Our clients ranged from celebrities to politicians. A year later, due to the tragic loss of my younger sister, I was forced to leave Gauteng and move back to Bloemfontein to fill the void left by her untimely departure and seek to re-establish myself. Both the Free State Development Corporation (FDC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) assisted me a lot in my attempts to establish myself as an accomplished artist in the province, particularly in Bloemfontein.
