WELCOME To our Spring/Summer Season 2012.

‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ - The SJT is part of the Olympics!

Throughout August we’ll be flying the flag for Scarborough on the South Coast when the SJT will present a season at the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of the London 2012 Festival. Here in North Yorkshire we’ll be celebrating with a season featuring four unmissable premieres: Alan Ayckbourn contributes Surprises, John Godber and Jane Thornton Lost & Found, Fiona Evans Geordie Sinatra, and I’ll be putting in my oar with Soul Man. What other repertory theatre company could give you such a marathon feast of new writing? It’s Olympian! We’re also experimenting with a brand new ‘cabaret style’ format for The Round during April and May. Drama, music, comedy and poetry in a 3-sided configuration: with the option of table seating, so you can get even closer to the action. And for those of you who are not desperate for

the discus or ravenous for the relay, here’s a chance to leave it all behind and enjoy the best live entertainment in an arena where everyone’s a winner.

‘Closer, Warmer, Friendlier’ - That’s the SJT all year Round. Chris Monks Artistic Director

2 April

13 April, 4pm 14 April, 11am & 2pm

Multi award winning company The Paper Birds present their critically acclaimed show Thirsty. Based on our nation’s love affair with alcohol, Thirsty weaves together real stories, memories and booze-based confessions, collected from a ‘drunken hotline’ and an online questionnaire. Fusing live music, verbatim text and stunning physical theatre, it explores the stories and the social repercussions, particularly focusing on the women waving the flag for ‘Booze-Britain.’ Thirsty looks to the faces and the voices of everyone who likes a drink and asks why, as a Nation, are we so thirsty? The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Top 5 of The Edinburgh Fringe’

“An energetic rollercoaster ride through the reasons that make so many of us reach for the bottle…”

Tim is a lonely boy who wants to be friends with the most brilliant boys and girls in town. One day, he and his little cat, Light, take a train journey to a moonlit Victorian house. In this magical world of shadows, the duo will need to discover what true friendship really means before it’s too late... Combining an exciting original soundtrack and enchanting puppets, Tim and Light is a story of courage that will warm the hearts of young and old alike. Hamlet

Ensemble 360 14 June

By William Shakespeare

12 May, 2.30pm & 7.30pm In the twilight of a pre-colonial Zimbabwe, a world of unyielding beliefs and ritual, where the afterlife and the present co-exist: two young men. The first, Hamlet, a tribal prince, confronts madness vs reason as he returns to find his father murdered, his mother incoherent and a new dangerous chief has taken over. The other, Leartes, falls victim to the new ruler as he must revenge the death of his father and that of his sister who finds herself in the ultimate peril. As the corpses mount, who buries who, and what danger is lurking in the wings of this small kingdom? Two actors, two props and the convergence of two cultures are all it takes to create an urgent, poetic and spiritual re-imagining of the rarely seen First Quarto of Shakespeare’s classic as the award winning Two Gents Productions return.

21 July - 25 August 9.30am & 10.30am shows (every Saturday)

Jeffrey works in an Art Gallery, he loves his job and he’s really good at it. He keeps the place spick and span for all the visitors and he’s very, very proud of his work. Jeffrey knows more about the paintings and statues than any of the tour guides, especially Tracy. Tracy is really nice but she wouldn’t know a Picasso from a Pop Tart or a Van Gogh from... well a van! Jeffrey would love to be a tour guide...each night he stays behind and really gets to know the paintings inside out. More inside than out if the truth be known! But Christophe, the French Curator, doesn’t think he’s good enough. Come along and find out Jeffrey’s secret, sing some songs, do a bit of dancing and see if you can’t help him reach his dream. I’ll bet with your help he’ll do it easily and show that Christophe what for! The usual Tiny Time Tales nonsense and you might even learn something about art too! Tickets £2.50 28
