Adult Courses

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced performer, our classes give you the opportunity to explore a range of acting techniques, drama exercises and games in a safe and supportive environment. Fun, informal and friendly workshops with an opportunity to put into practice the skills you have gained in regular performances.

Acting Classes Act 1 Beginners Call - Wednesdays 7.15-9.15pm

The Street

Acting classes for adults of all ages. No experience necessary. £55 - 10 sessions (starts 2 October)

Act 2 Enter Stage Right - Fridays 6.30-8.30pm

Theatre classes for adults with more experience and a passion for creating. £55 - 10 sessions (starts 4 October)

Singing Classes Funky Choir - Tuesdays 7-8.30pm

The Merchant Pub

Established singing group practising music ranging from pop to jazz and Ages 16+ beyond. Places are limited - please call to check availability beforehand. £55 - 10 sessions (starts 1 October)

Global Voices Choir - Thursdays 7pm-8.30pm

SJT

Singing songs from around the globe including African, Caribbean, Ages 16+ American and European music. Lively, joyous and fun! £55 - 10 sessions (starts 3 October)


Youth Theatre

Fun, Creative, Challenging.

The Stephen Joseph Youth Theatre runs weekly sessions for young people aged 8 to 21 in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. Led by theatre professionals our ‘Rounders’ have the opportunity to explore all areas of theatre, develop performance skills in a fun and friendly environment, improving their confidence and communication skills...

Fuse - Fridays 4.30-6pm

SJT

Run in partnership with NYCC and 4Youth this is an integrated Youth Ages 13+ Theatre for young people from mainstream schools and special educational needs or disabilities throughout Scarborough. Please contact OutReach for details on how to apply for a place.

Courses for Children & Young People

Ballet Boys - Wednesdays 8.15-9.15pm Ballet Boys is a fun, informal beginners class. Dance to modern Guys aged 14+ music with a strong emphasis on learning through enjoyment. £30 - 10 sessions (starts 2 October)

Drama Club - Mondays 7-9pm

Get creative, have fun and make new friends. Drama Club is for anyone who loves making theatre and performing. Exciting, entertaining and never a dull moment... various performances throughout the year. £4.50 per session (starts 30 September)

Tiny Time Rounders

Ages 6-7

Each fun-packed drama class includes games, songs and basic drama techniques. A great way to build confidence, improve communication skills and team work. £35 - 10 sessions (starts 2 October)

SJT Youth Choir - Mondays 5-6.30pm

SJT

Come and sing your heart out on songs sung by young people, aimed Ages 12-18 at young people, written for young people. A choir with a difference, the emphasis is on building confidence in these fun, friendly and supportive sessions. £35 - 10 sessions (starts 30 September)

Holiday Projects Dramarama Daze

SJT

An excellent way to keep your little ‘horrors’ entertained over Halloween. The theme runs throughout the project and culminates in a FREE performance for family and friends on Wednesday 30 October at 3.15pm.

Based on Winnie’s [The Witch] Crazy Capers by Valerie Thomas £20 per person

Play in a Day Xmas Project - Mondays 30 December, 10am-3pm Two great themed projects with the ultimate challenge to put on a play in a day. Come and see the results! Performance 3.15pm for family and friends. Based on The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss

Adult Workshops

Write Stuff Too - Mondays 7-9pm SJT (fortnightly, term 23 September - 2 December)

Lively practical workshops with a focus on scriptwriting for theatre and TV, taught by a professional playwright. To take part – send a sample of your writing to our Head of Outreach, Denise Gilfoyle (Denise.Gilfoyle@sjt.uk.com) prior to starting the course. £50 - 6 sessions spread over 10 weeks.

Daytime Play Reading - Wednesdays 11.30-1.30pm (monthly)

Monthly sessions for the over-50s (or thereabouts!). Picked in conjunction with our current main house production, we explore the work of different playwrights, themes and stories over tea and biscuits. Informative but fun. £6 per session - starts 23 October

Beyond the Tea Dance - 10.30am-1pm (monthly)

SJT

A series of workshops tailored for the more mature members of our community. Exploring themes and plays from our main house. Free coffee or tea with your ticket. £6 per session - starts 25 October (call for more information)

Book Club - 6.30-8pm

SJT

Free bi-monthly book club for those who love reading and wish to discuss and share their thoughts with others. Books are chosen by the members – one classic and one contemporary novel. Everyone welcome. FREE - starts 15 October
