The Idea of a University A university is not bricks and mortar, not solely bricks and mortar. It is flesh and bone, dreams and reality, promise and fulfillment. Its totality is too broad for canvas, too elusive for print. It has moods and ages, like a person. Its seasons are all growing seasons and the harvests ever secure. A university is, above all, an experience. It exists in the hearts and minds of those who draw from its wisdom and add to its reputation. A university is a place, yes, but a place of the spirit. It is described, forever after, by its family, not as architecture, but as personality and precept and conversion. A university is what its alumni have become. They are its voice to the world. Some alumni achieve headlines, bear titles, manage corporations, represent constituents, build, create, publicize, minister, protect, teach. Some labor less conspicuously, contributing from the depths of their talents, fostering understanding, transmitting appreciation. They speak for us, our alumni. And they speak well. Robert T. History of Hood and Robe

Omicron Delta Kappa

Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The hoods are a carry-over from the times when monks, who operated these universities, wore them to protect their shaved heads in winter. The robe is an adaptation of the shoulder cape also worn by these same monks while collecting alms.

Active student members of the UNO Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, shall be recognized by the blue, white and black honor cords, the official colors of the society.

Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of what is now Columbia University. In 1895, a commission of University officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. This code has undergone several revisions in subsequent years. Styling of the robes varies for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with the width of sleeve borders and length of the hood increasing with each advanced degree. Hoods are normally not used for bachelor’s degrees today. Instead, the tassel colors are used to indicate the degree program. All doctoral degree recipients are indicated by a gold tassel.

Phi Kappa Phi Members of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s most selective all-discipline academic honor organization, shall be recognized by the navy blue and gold honor cords or stoles.

Pi Gamma Mu Blue and white cords with the blue tassels honor graduating members of Pi Gamma Mu, International Honor Society in Social Science.

U.S. Military Veteran Red, white and blue cords signify a U.S. military veteran.

University Honors Program The University Honors Program is a University-wide program providing maximum educational opportunities for students of high ability through special multidisciplinary seminars and participation in an academic level not generally possible in usual curricular offerings. The program is an outgrowth of the Arts and Sciences Honors program and was initiated in 1978. It is governed through the office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and administered through the Honors Director. UNO colleges which implement Honors Programs include Arts and Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Public Affairs and Community Service; Information Science and Technology; and Communication, Fine Arts and Media. As part of their Honors Program requirements, students undertake a research project that results in a Senior Honors Thesis. Students who have been designated in this booklet as Honors Program students have fulfilled the academic requirements of this program. Honors Program graduates wear blue and scarlet Honors cords.

Tyler Jeffrey Gassaway is graduating from the College of Business Administration with his Master of Business Administration degree. Gassaway previously attended Creighton University and chose UNO because “it was like finding a new, exciting, hidden sledding hill in my neighborhood— once I went down it the first time, I realized what I was missing,” he says. “After my first class, I knew I made the right choice in studying here.”

Ron Withem is among the most well-known and influential figures in the Nebraska State Capitol, having served as a state senator and speaker of the Unicameral prior to becoming director of governmental relations for the University of Nebraska in 1997. Today he represents and advocates for the university system’s interests as they are impacted by governmental policies and is chair of NU’s Legislative Liaison Committee.

While studying for his master’s, Gassaway participated in a group consulting project for the Girl Scouts of Nebraska where they were charged with creating a marketing campaign to attract and retain volunteers and members for the upcoming school year. His group presented to the chief executive officer, who fell in love with their ideas and implemented their campaign.

Withem’s long run in the Unicameral began in 1982 when he sought newly created legislative seat 14 in Sarpy County. He lost by 13 votes to fellow Democrat Tom Doyle. Doyle later resigned his seat and then-Gov. Bob Kerrey appointed Withem in his place. Withem was chair of the education committee from 1987 to 1994. He and Senator Jerome Warner of Waverly helped create the Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education. When elected speaker in 1994 he became just the third urban-area state senator in three decades to have held the post. He served as speaker for three years.

Gassaway’s hobbies include traveling, running, golfing and cooking. Owning a restaurant/bar and event space in Omaha would be his dream job.

Tyler Jeffrey Gassaway

In the future, Gassaway plans to keep learning and growing in his position and use his MBA to leverage a future career in consulting or marketing with an agency or in-house corporate team.

Angela Samielle Friedman is graduating from the College of Public Affairs and Community Service with a Bachelor of General Studies degree. Through the BGS degree, Friedman focused her studies on behavioral health, theater and health education. Friedman chose UNO because it allowed her to receive life and academic experiences while staying close to family.

Ron Withem

A major accomplishment of Friedman’s collegiate career was being on the Dean’s List. She also participated in Three Days of Service, held by the Office of Civic and Social Responsibility, and participated in theater productions.

Withem received his master’s degree in secondary education from UNO in 1973. He received a BA from Wayne State College in 1968. Before his political career he was a teacher at Papillion-La Vista High School. He received the UNO College of Education’s Distinguished Alumni award in 1988 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska Council of School Administrators in 1990, and recently received the Marvin D. “Swede” Johnson Achievement Award, which recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement, quality and effectiveness of state relations on behalf of a higher education institution or state system. Withem is a board member at First Unitarian Church of Omaha. He and his wife, Diane, have two grown children, Suzane and Justin. Diane is a 1974 UNO graduate. She and Ron met during an English class at UNO in 1971. Suzanne earned degrees from UNO in 2004 and 2012.

She enjoys yoga, acting, and singing. Her dream job is to be an actress. After graduation, Friedman plans to work toward becoming a wellness coordinator. Graduate school is also in her plans.
