ARMS
Upper & Lower Control Arms & what they do..Control Arms are the most mis-understood component of a suspension system. Follow these guidelines & have proper handling & prevent rapid treadwear Factory arms are perfectly engineered to maintain proper Geometry in relationship to the height of the vehicle. Any variation of as little as 1/2 an inch will change your Geometry and it will be necessary to realign to maintain your Toe-in, Caster, and Camber. All of our control arms are manufactured using state of the art CNC cutting, bending and forming processes with high strength steel plate and DOM Steel Tubing. We manufacture our ball joint mounts out of steel plate ranging from 0.375” to 0.500” thick and some control arms are made using CNC Turned steel ball joint cups. All of our tubular control arms made using 1.0” dia. – 1.75” dia. x 0.120” - 0.188” wall DOM Steel Tubing that is precision bent, coped and Mig/Tig welded by the best welders in the industry.

Chevy Performance Releases Colorado ZR2 Race Parts
C
HEVROLET continues to expand the Colorado ZR2 midsize truck’s performance envelope with the introduction of 15 factory race components developed and validated over 10,000 miles of off-road racing. The parts were developed by Chevrolet Performance engineering in collaboration with Multimatic and Hall Racing. Renowned off-road driver Chad Hall competed in a Colorado ZR2 equipped with these components throughout 2017 and 2018 to develop and validate them in desert racing conditions. During that time, the team completed every mile of every race in the “Best in the Desert” series. Hall Racing also used the Colorado ZR2 to pre-run the grueling Baja 1000 race. “Off-road racing is a brutal test of a vehicle, and especially its suspension components,” said Mark Dickens, executive director of Chevrolet Performance Variants, Parts and Accessories and Motorsports. “Over two years, Chad mercilessly pushed these ZR2 parts to the limit for the ultimate in development and validation. “After seeing the success of the

Colorado ZR2, customers have been hounding Chad for help building their own ‘Hall Racing ZR2,’” Dickens continued. “For the first time, you can buy the same Chevy Performance Parts that raced and won in the desert. All you need to add is the required safety equipment to build a pre-runner for scouting the Baja 1000 or a full-blown race truck capable of competing in the race itself.” Compared to a standard Colorado, the ZR2 features front and rear tracks that have been widened by 3.5 inches and a suspension lifted by 2 inches. Functional rock sliders provide better performance over rocks and obstacles, and the front and rear bumpers have been modified for better off-road clearance. Class-exclusive features include standard front and rear electronic locking differentials, an available diesel engine and the first off-road application of Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) damper technology. While the stock ZR2 comes factory-equipped with capability for both low- and high-speed off-roading, these factory race parts focus on desert running while preserving low-speed off-road performance. Some of their many benefits
include an additional 1-inch suspension lift and a 1.5-inch Body Lift on top of the ZR2’s factory ride height and up to 15 percent more suspension travel for extreme high-speed off-roading. A set of Multimatic DSSV dampers engineered beyond the already formidable bandwidth of ZR2’s stock DSSVs enable the latter. Available Multimatic Front Long Travel DSSV Shocks provide customers with as much as a 15 percent increase in overall front suspension travel, while the Multimatic long travel rear shocks can increase rear suspension travel by as much as 10 percent. Other components include front and rear jounce shocks to absorb large suspension inputs, using the same technology found on Trophy Trucks, and reinforced components including steel drive shafts, half shafts and tie rods. “These parts can be purchased individually to suit each customer’s needs, or as a complete package,” said Dickens. “This gives customers the flexibility to build their truck up over time, purchase only the parts they need for their particular interest, or buy the complete set to build their own ‘Hall Racing’ ZR2.” The parts will be available to Colorado ZR2 customers a la carte or as a complete package. Ford Offers Yakima Outdoor Accessories in Dealerships
O better meet the needs of adventure-seeking Ford customers, Ford Accessories will offer Yakima outdoor adventure products through Ford dealerships starting with the launch of the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger in early 2019. Ranger customers will be able to select from a range of available Yakima accessories, and can choose to add the cost to their vehicle financing. For added convenience, all Yakima accessories purchased through a Ford dealership come with a three-year or 36,000-mile Ford warranty; extended warranties also are available. “We know our customers see their vehicles as extensions of themselves,” said Eric Cin, global director, Vehicle Personalization. “With the addition of Yakima accessories, Ford aims to enhance the experiences of adventure-driven customers by delivering innovative solutions such as truck bed racks
that preserve cargo space by lifting kayaks, bikes and skis off the floor of the bed. It’s about making each adventure better.” Industry projections indicate consumers will spend $45 billion on vehicle personalization parts in 2018, according to the SEMA 2018 Market Report. Considering aftermarket suppliers account for more than 50 percent of personalization accessory purchases, increasing accessibility through Ford dealers may boost dealer business while improving convenience for customers. Beginning in early 2019, the highest-selling Yakima accessories will be available to meet the greatest customer demand. Available accessories include kayak racks, bike racks, truck-bed storage solutions designed to transport longer items securely, and truck-bed tents that keep customers and their essentials off the ground. Additional Yakima offerings will join the Ford Accessories portfolio over time to give customers access to more of the products that best fit their lives.

Some accessories that will be available in early 2019 include the BedRock Heavy Duty truck bed rack (compatible with SkyRise medium rooftop tent), BaseLine tower and JetStream crossbar cab rack (compatible with MegaWarrior basket and SlimShady awning), LongArm bed extender with pad, and the GateKeeper tailgate pad. “Offering Yakima products through our Ford dealerships is a win-win,” Cin said. “It provides customers access to quality adventure accessories and gives them another reason to return to dealerships.” Ford also is exploring a variety of other accessories options to continue the momentum of bringing valuable ownership experiences to Ford customers.

His latest is his version of what a traditional late ’20s to early ’30s roadster pickup would look like if you used a completely fabricated cab and bed, and we love it! Here’s the scoop from Chris: “Sure, you could start a hot rod pickup build from a more traditional ’27-’34 Ford (Model A or B) either found in good enough shape or start from something like a Brookville body to get going, but why not build from scratch with the influence in mind? Chances are you might want to chop/channel/section the body anyway, so building from raw materials could be the way to go. In the example here, those ideas are addressed and finessed with personal taste in mind without the confines of ‘What did you start with?’ Instead, it’s a hot rod with ideas inspired by tradition. T MAY SURPRISE YOU, BUT AS THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE NATION’S LARGEST CUSTOM TRUCK MAGAZINE, THIS WAS ACTUALLY MY FIRST TRIP TO THE WORLD-FAMOUS SEMA SHOW IN LAS VEGAS. Throughout the many years in the automotive industry, my trips to this must-see event were always cut short for one reason or another, but not this year. Ten days at the Trump International Hotel right on the Vegas strip and special “SEMA Media” credentials that let us in two hours early should have been plenty of time to see the whole event, right? No … no, not at all. If you plan to attend this unbelievable yearly event for your first time in 2019, do yourself a favor and concede to the fact that you’re not going to see it all. If you go there with this in mind, you should have plenty of time to appreciate quality over quantity. Sure, there are only three massive
two-story convention centers full of some of the most unbelievable rides you will probably ever see in your life, but even the parking lots surrounding these convention centers were loaded with one dream build after another. The few times we actually were not staring at custom trucks, we would see industry celebrities in every corner including Stacey David, Jesse James, Aaron Kaufman, Chip Foose and Noah Alexander. After speaking with a few of them, I can tell you that if time was unlimited and free, they would talk to each and every one of you all day long. They love this scene as much as we do; they just

happen to be better at showing it, that’s all. One of the exciting things we had on our schedule throughout the week was the one-on-one meetings with top manufacturers in our industry. We were able to pick the brains of some powerful people, which leads to amazing editorial for the fans in the future. Look out for some new interesting articles as we team up with brands like Vintage Air, Eddie Motorsports, Alden American, Toyo Tires, ATC Truck Covers and Bed Wood and Parts, just to name a few. HEN YOU LOOK AT THIS STUNNING SOUTH AMERICAN FORD IN ALL OF ITS GLORY, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT THE BUILD STARTED OFF AS NOTHING BUT A LONG-ABANDONED CAB THAT WAS BEING USED AS A PIG STY ON THE SIDE OF A VOLCANO. In the small town of Riobamba, a couple of hours south of the Ecuadorian capital Quito, Pepe and his son Josh had been looking for a classic pickup to turn into a project vehicle for a while. They hadn’t come across anything that could be used as a suitable starting point, until one day a familiar shape caught their attention in the field off a local back road. On closer inspection, their first thought was confirmed: It really was an original cab from a ‘48 Ford. After a princely sum of $1,200 was handed over, they went back with spades and pickaxes to dig it out of the ground. The next job was washing the decade’s worth of pig mess out if it, and so began a project that eventually cumulated into this stunning, traffic-stopping custom pickup. Josh, still only in his early 20s, had always been into the classic/retro look rather than the souped-up Japanese hot hatches of his local car enthusiast peers. From the outset, Josh had a few ideas about which way he wanted this project to go. Two things he was sure of were that this truck wasn’t going to be just for show and it was going to be extremely unique. Surfing the internet and diving into the truck scene in America made it obvious that many ‘48s had gone the route of a little bit rat rod, a little bit hot rod. But Josh had the idea of competing against other builders with his truck on the track. ‘48 Ford rally car? Not so many of those around these parts.

LOVE AND LOGISTICS Ecuador is a strange little country. Touching the Pacific, Andes and Amazon, it’s an incredibly diverse place, but a draconian rule that has stood for generations states that only brand new cars can be imported, and prohibitively expensive importation taxes are ultimately added. Flat out, it means that this is the most expensive country in the world to buy a car. The rule is simple: If it’s not new with papers to prove it, it’s not coming in. Classic car ownership, and especially building something heavily modified, is therefore a serious labor of love and logistics. Keeping to a sensible budget for the build was managed
using locally sourced parts or custom fabricated pieces. To begin, a couple of donor vehicles were purchased to aid in the restomod. A Bronco and an F350, both from the early 90s, had beneficial gear Josh was able to recycle. The Bronco’s chassis was more suited to their needs, so minus some superfluous cross members and a few inches lopped off the front and rear, this is what they mounted everything to. The rear axle casing also came from the Bronco, but everything from the front was jettisoned as 4x4 wasn’t needed. The 460c.i. big block was pulled out of the 1992 F350, and although

they only wanted the engine, they had to buy the rest of the truck with it. All of the internals are stock, with the exception of sodium filled valves to cope with extra heat from the levels of combustion that Ford never intended this block to have. A fuel injection system is designed specifically to use as little fuel as possible, but for a performance car the idea is to get as much fuel as possible into the cylinders. To this end, a gorgeous 750 CFM Eisenbach carburetor with electric choke was fitted and sits proudly on top of the block, muscle car style. With the fuel inlet channels bored out, the fuel economy was reduced dramatically but, of course, the power increased in direct inverse proportion. From a not particularly lethargic 289 bhp it now puts out a much more sporty 350 bhp, although that figure is just an educated guesstimation as no one in Riobamba has a dyno to be able to test it. For the same reason they have no idea what the torque rating is. The top speed is 260 km/h, although how they found that out is not really printable without getting them into trouble. Power goes through a ceramic-plated Exedy Racing performance clutch into an interestingly Frankenstein gearbox with a hodge-podge selection of parts from different Ford vehicles. The cost of buying and importing a competition ‘box from America was out of the question, especially as whatever they got would WWW.STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

have had to have been brand new, so Josh played around with taking different gear cogs out of different Ford F-series gearboxes until he found the right settings. First to third gears are now much shorter for better acceleration, and he’s also very happy with how smooth and fast the changes are. Buying four gearboxes to get the needed parts still wasn’t cheap though!

Inside the Bronco rear axle casing are standard F150 shafts, but something else it was impossible to find in Ecuador was a suitable crown and pinion for the rear diff. It needed to be the right ratio and also massively strong, so a small package was freighted over from Ford Racing. By the time it got through the border controls it cost $2,300! Another difficult engineering issue to get right was finding a balance between the steering having a usable lock without the wheels fouling against the fenders. There was no other build to copy, not on the
internet and certainly not locally, so it was two weeks of trial and error resetting the suspension mounts until it worked. Pepe smiles and says, “Mucho trabajo!” It was the same for the brackets for the new 11-inch calipers on the rear axle that replaced the old Bronco drums. A set of 2012 F150 calipers now slow the rear down while a hefty set of double calipers from an F250 are on the front with Ford Performance ceramic coated pistons. With wide Kumho tires, 305/50-17s on the back and 245/45-17s on the front, in contact with the road and brakes designed for something twice its weight, it stops very well. The wheels, matte black and pretty well hidden under the wings, are at set of 17-inch Rev Classic 5-spokes. The front suspension arms are not designed for cruising around town. When it’s pushed in competition this beast gets airborne (it even pulls wheelies!), so the arms have more in common with Trophy Trucks from the Baja 1000 than anything made for the street. Each arm is 1.3 meters long… but the truck is not 2.6 meters wide. LOVE AND LOGISTICS of the chassis. That’s some serious engineering for a guy and his son in grandma’s garage! The exhaust, too. A bit like some prehistoric cave paintings, it’s a work of art that only the most intrepid get to see. I had to hunker down in an oily mechanic’s pit to see how well they’d worked the tubing from the bunches at the block down to the tail. Riobambans live in the shadow of Cotopaxi, one of the most active volcanoes in the world and the low rumbling growl is pretty much the same noise the locals have been preparing for when it next blows its top. This is quite possibly why many people cowered for cover as we powered around the grid like streets. To save both money and the time it takes to get things through customs, they wanted the car to have as many locally sourced parts as possible, but searching around Ecuador for wings and doors for a 70-year-old car proved fruitless, and so the replica body panels came from Dennis Carpenter in California. To save as much weight as possible, all the supports were taken out of the bonnet and wings… (it now opens with the help of a baseball bat, apparently a useful accessory to carry with you in some parts of the country) and because the car was both lowered and sported much wider wheels they were also going to have to engineer a way for the wheels to steer under the front arches. It was for this reason that they widened all the fenders by 4 inches, but it is this practical modification that’s made this car look so good. Working with such gracefully curved metal is an artisan’s job though and one Josh took to a local sheet metal worker to make sure it was done properly. I had a careful look. The work is seamless. Understandably, there isn’t a company that makes race-spec roll cages for a ‘48 cab, so a lot of measurements were taken and a mock-up made with much thinner tubing to test the angles and dimensions. There’s no FIA health and safety rules for racing 48

in Ecuador, so the joins didn’t need to be seam welded and certified. Pepe’s solution was to bend the pipes with a hydraulic bender and fasten them together with double-studded brackets. Not FIA, but safe enough. Hopefully. The interior looks like a catalogue photo for Sparco. With the steering wheel and Evo seats, it’s part spartan race car and with just a single gauge, that of a rev counter redlined at 8,000 rpm, and the lovely gleaming chrome work on the dash, also from Dennis Carpenter, it’s also beautifully classic as well. There is of course no stereo. Despite being built from the ground up for racing, the first thing the car won was a show… but that was just an indication of things to come. Josh entered a hillclimb event near the capital Quito and in his first ever race won the pickup class! I asked where he learned to drive like that, but he insists that that was his first time ever driving at competitive speeds. “I guess it’s in my DNA,” he shrugs. A couple of months later in his first circuit race he got 2nd.. He started near the back and just couldn’t quite catch the 2015 Corvette in time before the checkered flag fell. Built with what parts were available and expensive purchases kept to a minimum, this truck is much more than the sum of its parts. In Ecuador, it’s utterly unique but it would also hold its own in any American truck show. WWW.STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

AF Speed Shop built up the custom CAD-designed and TIG-welded chassis and suspension, which was swapped out by Rad Fab to replace the 50-plus-year-old originals. Obviously the truck rides on air, and uses AccuAir’s E-Level Management paired with their latest ENDO CV, which consists of air tanks with internal compressors and valves. The setup is beautifully displayed behind the tailgate, just underneath the raised bed floor.

If you were at SEMA in 2017, you may remember this truck as the one in the Avery Dennison booth that was rewrapped every single day to show off the company’s vinyl wrap materials. And while this technology is certainly impressive, Rob felt that the truck was finally ready for some paint! He called upon IKandy Paintworks to work its WE’VE SEEN SOME WILD EXHAUST magic on the truck, spraying a near-factory SETUPS, BUT GM Fawn Beige over and in the truck. The NOTHING QUITE roof, bumper, grille and 22-inch Detroit LIKE THIS! RAD FAB CONJURED UP THIS Steel smoothie wheels all received some TRICK MID-BED utilitarian, yet classy, ivory painted contrast DESIGN, WHICH to really set off the old school flavor that this USES 3-INCH TUBING THROUGHOUT. The engine of choice is a tried and true 5.3L Chevy backed by a manual transmission, and sports custom AF Speed Shop headers, which lead to a custom 3-inch Rad Fab exhaust setup that exits right through the bed floor! Keeping things even more interesting under the hood is a custom air intake over the LS3 intake made by RadFab, as well as vintage-style Chevrolet script valve covers. Carrying on the vintage theme inside, Rob entrusted Elevated Designs to revamp the interior of his C10 without going too wild. We’d say they did an outstanding job of maintaining a clean, stock look, while throwing in a couple of ’60s-era custom touches, such as the white edging around the carpet, and modern conveniences like the Dakota Digital RTX gauge set and Retro Sound stereo. When we caught up with Rob at SEMA 2018, the truck had just been finished, and we were lucky enough to sneak it away as soon as it was over to get some shots before it headed back home to Arizona. Seeing a truck like Rob’s get built by a young and talented team of fabricators is both refreshing and inspiring, and certainly gives us a kick in the pants to get back to work in the garage! We’re not sure what Rob will build next, but we do know one thing for certain: Our future is in good hands! 60

EEP IT OR SELL IT? It’s the big question once you’ve built a truck, and it’s not an easy one to answer. On occasion though, life just makes the decision for you. Sometimes it’s in the form of a large sum of cash, and other times, it’s when you’re sitting at a stop sign and some jerk t-bones your beautiful show vehicle at 50 mph, setting off all the airbags and destroying your truck in the process. Unfortunately for Jacob Chatagnier of Thibodaux, Louisiana, it was the latter.

The truck was his 2014 GMC Sierra, and it was built with the intent of making a killer ride for SEMA — and that’s exactly what he did. The truck was white with red graphics and looked pretty sweet laid out at the show. And he had

plans, too. After driving the truck for a bit, he had visions of putting a new front clip on it and making a few other tweaks, but the timeline was a bit vague. Once it was wrecked in 2015, he wasn’t left with a whole ton of options. And

with that in mind, he decided to rebuild the truck and take it a step further. And boy did he ever. The front clip is the first large standout on the truck. It’s from a 2016 Cadillac Escalade, but it’s been tweaked with some custom-painted accents in the grille. Now astute readers will know that the bodylines on that Escalade clip aren’t the same as on a GMC, and Jacob knew the same thing. So instead of leaving it, he massaged the bed and cab so that it matched with the new front. And the results look like the truck came out of Cadillac’s factory as-is. The truck needed a full respray after the accident, so Jacob did all the mods he wanted to do before anything else. Once everything was straight as an arrow, he figured a color change was in order. It’s called “Burnt Brick,” which is a pretty accurate descriptor, and it’s accented by custom pinstriping

and leafing down the sides. The graphics are subtle and not overdone, which complements the classy front clip nicely. Let’s take a moment to discuss the wheels, which, unless you’re paying attention, are a step beyond the norm. When he was approached by Rotiv Wheels about getting some 26s for his truck, they had an interesting proposition: Run both 5- and 6-lug wheels. After

all, you can get the same basic pattern on both sides, it’s just an extra spoke. To do that, he had the rear axle shaft redrilled to a 5-lug pattern, and the same with the front hub. So now the driver’s side of the truck is a 5-lug, while the passenger is a 6-lug. Betcha never seen that before. What’s next for the truck? Little stuff, mostly. Jacob plans on cleaning up the engine bay and enjoying it mostly. He’s put 20,000 miles on it since the bodydrop, and he had no intention of stopping. Will he build it a third time? Maybe. But this time, let’s hope that a crappy driver has nothing to do with it.

ERSATILITY IS DEFINED AS THE “ABILITY TO ADAPT OR BE ADAPTED TO MANY DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OR ACTIVITIES.” In the world of custom trucks, most builds are targeted toward one specific end—not versatility— and for most enthusiasts, if their truck can look good on the show field, pull some hardware come trophy time and get a few thumbs up on the road it’s been a good day.
But what about the show trucks that haul the show trucks? The trucks that are built to shine up and pull focus while laid out at the show and do double duty to haul a trailer and serve as daily drivers for the weekday 9-5 grind. More than just another pretty face, these are the trucks that make stuff happen. Matt Brunner from Wellington, Florida, owns the slammed,
smoothed and simple dually laid out across these pages and built it to daily drive, show and tow. As the foreman for a Bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin shop, Matt spends his days working on high-end rides, so when it’s quittin’ time he enjoys climbing behind the wheel of a good old fashioned pickup truck. The build began with a visit to Brian Cuenot at Cuenot’s

Automotive in Loxahatchee, Florida. Ordered originally with a 6.5-liter diesel, this ’97 C-3500 was in need of some tuning and proper sealing. Brian got the old school bowtie clacker purring like a kitten and sealed all of the leaks before upgrading the stock transmission with a B&M shift kit. Now that the truck was running like a top, it was time to ditch the stock nosebleed stance and make it look cool, too. Enter Frank and the crew from Reds Miami. The truck was brought down to earth
with a full air ride suspension system, custom c-notched rear frame. To set off the slam six 22-inch Diesel Wheels Impeller style wheels were mounted up. Reds made a set of custom adapters and custom machined the wheels to fit within the stock fenders when the truck is laid out. To seal the envelope of this laid out land yacht Matt delivered the truck to Renato Silda at Superior Craftsman in Oakland Park, Florida, for some simple metal mods and a fresh blanket of color.

A roll pan replaced the factory rear bumper and the tailgate and stake pockets were shaved for a smooth and clean finish. Up front, a painted smooth front bumper replaces the original. Luis Berrios at Superior Craftsman sprayed the fresh white Spies Hecker paint. Clear headlights, marker lights, a billet grille insert and billet bowtie round out the custom exterior style. Inside the cab, the threads were left stock save for a Budnik billet steering wheel and a white-faced gauge overlay. Beats are kicked via a Pioneer head unit and DS 18 mids, highs and amps combined with two 12-inch subs behind the seat. Matt Brunner, with the help of Reds Miami and Superior Craftsman, put together one clean and classy dually that turns heads on the street, at the shows and while pulling Matt’s 26-foot trailer filled with his other automotive passion: custom Volkswagens. Matt’s truck is proof that with the right custom touches and a simple and clean approach the results can be a homerun.

OME PROJECTS ARE MORE EXTREME THAT OTHERS, WHICH IS APPARENT AT FIRST GLANCE OF DANIAL KREITER’S ’97 S-10. “A little off the top” isn’t quite the right sentiment here, as this Dime has had 11 inches chopped off its upper profile. It’s noticeable—and pretty amazing when you get up close to it. Danial didn’t just grab for a Sawzall and get to hackin’. He studied other vehicles with similar chop tops, and he took notes before making the first cut. “I did a lot of research online,” he says. “I had to look at older chop tops since I was doing something new with an S-10.” Danial is a welder and fabricator by trade, so a job like this didn’t scare him off, but he wanted to make sure all the angles were just right, and that he didn’t take too much off since metal takes forever to grow back. Although Danial is used to working with metal on an almost daily basis, he didn’t take to the job of building his S-10 lightly. 96

“I try to push the boundaries of my abilities as far as possible, and to learn as much as I can when I do something new,” he says. And with his first experience with his truck’s chop, a list of other things had to be done as well aside from just the cutting and welding. Every piece of glass had to be removed and altered to fit the newly redesigned cab. Actually, temporary polycarbonate windows have been mocked up for now until permanent replacement glass can be cut. The snap closure ragtop now gives the truck a kick back convertible feel that works so well the Florida climate.

Danial has spent five years getting to this point with his project S-10. It sat dormant at times, but now that he has had a chance to start whipping it into shape, a wave of momentum will likely carry him into other aspects of the build. Since Danial is more than capable of doing most of his own work, he had to set time aside to work on the suspension and the performance side of his truck as well. The factory frame was utilized for the build, but it has been modified with necessary notches and outfitted with all the right aftermarket components to make it rest on the floor.

BLOOD, SWEAT & GEARS EITHER DANIAL IS REALLY TALL, OR HIS S-10 IS REALLY LOW.
Although the custom Speedway upper control arms, modified stock lowers, 2-inch drop spindles and the rear 6-link system did bring the S-10 closer to the floor, it was the traditional 3-inch body drop that made the big difference. The bed floor was raised and not hacked up to give the chassis a little more breathing room, while also maintaining some cargo hauling function on top. Danial did this work himself under his own shop name Crazy Dayz Fabrication, which is a perfect name for the type of work he does and the hours that go into making his ideas work. Although this truck is still a work in progress, it shows some signs of ending up pretty cool when it comes closer to full completion. Danial still sees some room to slam the truck even lower, and plans on reintroducing the cab to real glass as soon as possible. The interior is scheduled to see a complete overhaul as well—the chain link steering wheel may end up sticking around, but the plastic Ikea seating will surely make way for something more comfortable. Guess we’ll see as a little more time goes by.

The ’73 Camaro engine is sure to stay, though. Danial has put so much work into it, and has beefed it up to put out some real power to the tires. This particular engine is a change of pace for S-10 builds, so it’s cool to see some creativity underneath the hood. The list of modifications made to this power plant is kind of crazy, but what else would you expect from a member of the Freaks of Nature North Florida chapter? Danial is certainly letting his freak flag fly high with this project,
and it’s sure to get even more distinct the longer he wrenches on it. Danial has taken his S-10 to a few shows already, and plans to continue showing it as he makes even more progress. His truck is somewhat of a conversation piece wherever he goes, and to him, that is what makes all his hard work worth it. “Cruising around town and seeing people’s faces has really been one of the best parts during the build so far,” he says. “It’s been an amazing experience, even though everything that could go wrong with it, did. I just know that I’ll never stop building and pushing my limits. Now, I feel ready to try something more challenging for my next project after I finish this thing.”

O MATTER HOW OFTEN WE SEE TRENDS CHANGE, ONE THING ALWAYS REMAINS CONSTANT. The enthusiasm from the younger generation in our industry to create something new and unique is always the driving force behind industry changes. From vehicle wraps to big wheels and thin tires, the styles are constantly changing, and it’s our job to keep up. We’ve seen trucks go from lifted to lowered, and the opposite, time and time again. One day it’s powder-coated and the next day it’s chrome, but either way it’s custom and unique, just the way we like it. That’s no different for our good friend Trace Wilks from Albertville, Alabama. After around $45,000 in aftermarket additions on top of a $36,000 truck, this 2007 GMC is his take on the perfect, clean and fast street truck, and we tend to like his style! This 24-yearold diesel truck enthusiast has had a passion for trucks since he was a young kid, and for the past five years he’s been wrenching on his own ride making it perfect one piece at a time with the help of his good friend and

local business owner Dylan Moon of Full Moon Diesel. Trace originally bought this truck with the intentions of making it his daily driver with only 39,000 miles on the dash. What started as a mild transmission upgrade eventually led to this rowdy 1,100-horsepower truck that originally had bone stock internals. The factory 6.6L LBZ Duramax Diesel engine has been intensely modified to handle nearly 1,750 pounds of torque. Machining by Wagler Competition Products in Odon, Indiana, along with a Callies Ultra billet crankshaft and forged

fuel injectors and a Nitrous NX dual kit add around an extra 100-300 hp, which is hard to wrap your head around. All this power is directed to the wheels through an Allison six-speed transmission built by Limitless Diesel and a Suncoast 10531-3D converter with a 3,400 stall speed. Once all these additions have been made, a custom computer tune was created by Unleashed Duramax Tuning using EFI live. Moving on from the motor, drivetrain, suspension and styling were next on his attention list. Do-all adjustable QA1 shocks were added front and rear along with slotted and drilled EBC brakes and braided steel brake lines. Trace’s wheel choice was a 20x10 Sota Rehab wrapped in 305/50/20 Nitto 420s tires. To make the truck sound as good as it looks, PPE exhaust was bolted on along with a carbon fiber stack from Oldskool Fab. A few body style upgrades include the 3-inch cowl hood, a rear bumper roll pan, recon tail lights and plenty of parts painted to match. This is one insanely first street truck that has a best quarter-mile ETA of a 10.88 add 130 mph. The curb weight of this screaming diesel is around 6,780 pounds, which is perfect for anyone that likes speed. Check out these pics and let us know your thoughts!

HERE’S A LOT OF THINGS WE LIKE ABOUT VINTAGE TRUCKS: TIMELESS STYLING, MECHANICAL SIMPLICITY AND MYSTIC NOSTALGIA--BUT BRAKING PERFORMANCE ISN’T ONE OF THEM. Though they were fine for country road speeds and farm truck utility, the binders on these old trucks don’t meet the expectations of today’s enthusiasts. Luckily for us, Wilwood Engineering offers complete, high-end braking options for historic trucks. After discussing our goals with the company, Wilwood experts recommended their 2.5-inch drop ProSpindles (P/N 831-14202), AERO6 Big Brake front kit (P/N 140-15305) and AERO4 Big Brake rear kit (P/N 140-10941) for our 1977 C-10 pickup. Besides giving us upgraded braking ability, the Big Brake kits fill our 20-inch wheel package nicely. Like all of Wilwood’s components, the ProSpindles are works of art. The kit includes a pair of forged aluminum spindles, steering arms and bolt-in hubs. The ProSpindles work with Wilwood’s disc brake kits and provide a 2.5-inch drop for a more aggressive stance without affecting steering geometry. The hub 112

Since we are doing a Porterbuilt front “dropmember” suspension, we were able to order the new brake kit to fit the 73-87 C10 trucks. We also made sure to order the Porterbuilt kit the same way. The reason for this is the 63-72 trucks came with smaller ball joints and changing out to the larger 73-87 ball joints is as simple as just ordering the correct parts from each company. The front brake system shipped to us completely assembled with CPP’s famous modular drop spindle. Also included with the front kit (part #7387SWBK-55213) is the upgraded stainless steel braided brake lines.

With the new bushings installed, the CPP steering unit can be installed into the Porterbuilt lower cross member using the hardware provided with the Porterbuilt kit.

This project is a full rebuild, so before assembling anything we completely stripped the chassis of all the stock components and sent it off to get media blasted. We also installed the Porterbuilt suspension parts before finally turning our attention to the front brake kit. Since CPP ships the parts as a complete unit, the assembly is simply set of the lower ball joint and then the upper ball joint is brought down and slid in the upper taper on the spindle.

With the bolts tied up we can be sure they wont turn out down the road someday. The rotor looks so clean on this kit!

Finishing the installation of the front brake kit and spindle is the new brake line. CPP provided all the necessary hardware to secure the line to the caliper and to the frame rail.
The calipers are loaded with Wilwood brake pads and bolted in place.

Moving our attention to the rear brake kit (part # 6772RWBK5-P12). This kit fits 12 bolt truck axles from 1967-1972 and includes 12-inch cross drilled and slotted rotors, e-brake equipped calipers, and all the necessary hardware and brackets to complete the installation.

The old drum brakes were removed and the axles shafts were slid out. The only thing left to remove is the original brake brackets.

For reassembly, the brackets that hold the caliper are the first pieces to get installed. In the kit there are several spacers that will adjust how far inward the caliper sits. We started with the one thick spacer and one thin spacer in order to get us in the ballpark and adjust them once we get the rotor on.
Finally, the new caliper can be installed on it’s bracket and checked for alignment.

Here’s a look at the completed rear kit. We got lucky and hit the mark on our first try with the spacing. Since this truck will sit right on the ground when aired out we opted to not install the e-brake cables.

Make plans for it now.

We aren’t talking about when your uncle has a few too many beers and walks into the basement wearing one of your aunt’s dresses either. Camp N Drag is a big tradition for many clubs/truck builders these days, and we encourage you to find out why.

Having one of the most organized shows in the Midwest, the only thing stronger than this show are show organizer Jimmie Broyles’ pythons. Have that man hit you with a gun show soon as you show up. Also, the casino/resort houses a ton of food options as well as fun night life/opportunities to hide from the sun. 122

Carlisle Truck Nationals is one of the most well-known Pennsylvania shows... pretty much ever. It has a little bit of everything you could ask for and always provides some pleasant weather for show attendees to enjoy the atmosphere each year.
