Manufacturing Trends: 2011 The semi-annual review for the year 2011 has recently been released by the Institute of Supply Management. As shown in the chart below, manufacturing numbers are up in terms of capacity, capital utilization and capital investment.

The increase in these manufacturing numbers since 2010 brings hope to the United States, after a rough few years of economic turmoil. Manufacturing is the backbone of our technologically-advanced and focused society. Because facilities have not only improved production rates (capacity), but also utilization, one can conclude that consumers are demanding (and spending) more in 2011 than they did in 2010 on manufactured goods. In addition, the increase in capital investment from 2010 indicates that manufacturers do not foresee consumer demand decreasing; in fact, the high increase in investments signifies that manufacturing companies are preparing for more business in the coming months and even into next year. As the demand for products increases, manufacturing facilities must not forget to make time to ensure their equipment is reliable and running at optimal capacity. In times of high production, it is easy to get caught up in the workload; however, no matter how busy, every manufacturing plant should have regularly scheduled maintenance checks, as well as a plan for unexpected shut-downs. This will ensure that, during times of high demand, equipment failure is not the cause of missed deadlines or even lost business. In the process heat industry, Stelter & Brinck is one company that offers preventative maintenance contracts. Consistent burner checks, leak tests, burner and process variable controller tuning, burner pilot inspection and also, the replacement of faulty parts, are part of the Scheduled Burner Maintenance Program offered by Stelter & Brinck.
