A REVIEW OF A REVIEW A FILM REVIEW WITH STEPHANIE MCCARTHY

After a number of bad reviews on the film Blue Valentine, I’ve decided to speak up. If films are to capture a snapshot of a time in the characters lives, what’s the harm in manifesting a story that hasn’t been told before? After all, there are hundreds of thousands of the same conventional romantic drama films out there all with the same underlying message of ‘undying love’.

real; so the little visual rhymes of the crosscutting of scenes makes sense to me.

This movie (like a lot of other independent films) is quite misunderstood. I identify with the characters in the movie because their future represents something I fear in my own life, so I had a very strong reaction to it.

Realism films such as Blue Valentine are an illumination and dramatization of everyday life. By the visual expressiveness of the physical tableau, a great sense of lost plenitude and sureness creates a distinct mood in the film. The structure of the flashbacks to the characters’ past happiness is crudely, but powerfully reminding us how every love story starts out. You may not realise it without experiencing it firsthand, but love sometimes disappears.

It doesn’t feel cute, because phones always ring, people always look at each other – and looking at someone that you’re in love with versus someone you’re not – they are different and that difference hurts, it emphasizes the loss in the movie.

Some movies are more powerful than others, depending on lots of things. This movie is made up of realistic occurrences. These are regular occurrences in daily life, making the movie feel

THE FILM STANDS AS A MEDITATION ON ONE COUPLE’S JOURNEY IN AND OUT OF LOVE

It doesn’t make sense if you take on the disposition that ‘Dean did nothing wrong for Cindy to fall out of love with him - so what was wrong with her?’, because that is not what this movie is about.

all have similar subliminal messaging as if love lasts forever, so Blue Valentine is a breath of fresh air. I ask for everyone to allow this movie in and to grasp the ideals of its evidently unique narrative. What some people choose not to believe in, they push away in disregard. We fear our own feeling more than violence itself – because solitary pain is more terrifying that what someone can physically inflict.

You can’t try to simplify the story by saying ‘Cindy had no reason to leave Dean’. As a film, it is demonstrating that their love has disintegrated over time. Blue Valentine shows you the start and the finish of the love between two people… Allowing the viewers to piece together what may have happened in between that made their love fall apart.

It would be easy to walk out of Blue Valentine assuming the message is that all relationships are doomed to dissolve, so why bother with love - but that would be a crack generalisation about this very sad, very beautiful film. It instead stands as a meditation on one couple’s journey in and out of love.

There are plenty of mainstream and conventional romantic movies out there that

SMARTIE ILLUMINATI

A SHORT STORY BY STEPHANIE MCCARTHY

I am absolutely spellbound. You are by far the dearest thing I have ever held close. I could not ask for a more rounded beautiful person to have in my life. Every time my mind idles, it idles towards you.

was drained onto the path around it. A food colouring rainbow strewn across the path. When I reached the tram stop, more staries were scattered along the length of the stop. Must have been a swinging party the night before, party bags and all. By this point my suspicion was aroused. Why in my travels had I come across so many coloured treats? I got off and walked home. No more smarties.

I have spent the vast majority of my life so far extremely selfishly. I mean, sure, I give time to others, try to make them happy or laugh but it’s really about my own selfish gain. However now I am aware of a new part of my cognitive though process that constantly involves other people. So here is a story for you.

I started to relax again. In the lift, after, of course looking at myself in the reflection, quickly my mind wandered. I thought of you. Nice eyes by the way. The doors opened. I looked down, low and behold, more smarties! Wedged between the small crevices that allow the lift door to slide.

This morning when I woke up at Keelans I walked across to Victoria Parade. It is the street off the end of Smith. Opposite end to where Julian lives. When I was walking there were some smarties scattered throughout it. It was as if two six years olds has been playing tug-of-war with the packet at both ends then in the heat of tug the packet split in two, scattering smarties everywhere.

By this point my paranoia is on overdrive, I was sure the smartie illuminati is after me. I don’t know what game this smartie illuminati is trying to play but it has made me uneasy. Not really though… I fucking love smarties! I’ll be sure to let you know if I come across anymore ‘random (conspiracy) smarties’ in my travels.

It rained the night before so the coloured shell
