Illawarra Division Rugby League @IllawarraDivisionRugbyLeague

40 YEARS ON . . . WE SALUTE OUR HISTORIC ILLAWARRA REP. TEAM

The 1978 Illawarra Rugby League rep. team won eight of nine matches played – winning the CRL Championship, defeated the New Zealand touring team and then reached the quarter-finals of the Amco Cup (mid-week TV Series). A total of 32 players were used in the successful ’78 rep. series. Two of the squad – STEVE MORRIS (Dapto) and PETER WYNN (Thirroul) became Australian reps, seven signed with Sydney clubs the following year. This team’s success renewed Illawarra’s 25-year campaign to gain entry into the major competition, which was successful. Pictured above is the initial team selected for the CRL’s first round match against Riverina: BACK ROW: Tommy Bishop (coach), Barry Pearson, Brian Johnson, Dennis Coelli, Peter Wynn, Tim Edwards, Gary Souter, John Cooper, Bill Cooney (trainer), Reub Waters (manager). FRONT ROW: David Beckett, Rodney Henniker, Neil Davis, Keith Rugg (capt.), Steve Morris, John Penno, Allan Shepherd, Brian Milthorpe. Ballboy: Brian Heapey.

Man First Grade competition produced closer scorelines than predicted. Definitely encouraging for the second half of the 2018 season. Round 7 could produce similar results – with two of the top four clubs being challenged at away venues. The much-improved Berkeley will host Collegians, at Berkeley Sportsground. The Eagles will be ready for another big effort! The Collie Dogs will be returning to the field after a two weeks’ lay-off and may need time to return to produce their best. If Corrimal can re-produce their Round 6 form – again at Ziems Park – the clash with Dapto could produce another very close match. The Canaries, at full strength; are a real premiership contender. Thirroul, at home; will also receive tough opposition from Helensburgh, in a northern derby. The Tigers really put it to Wests last round and will be confident of climbing the points ladder with a win over their neighbour. However, the Butchers, at home; are capable of defeating any Illawarra team – with the support of their “locals”. Competition leaders Wests receive the Bye points from Round 7 and will be on top of the points table at the half-way mark of the 2018 season.

SHIELD POINTS TABLE

Western Suburbs “third string” open age team has taken a four-point lead in the Hardware Man Shield competition. The Red Devils are the only First Division club that has retained a team in this competition – a very successful policy to give their juniors another opportunity to remain in the game. Additional teams are required in all Illawarra competitions. Retention of juniors can only be achieved where there are teams available to accommodate.
