THIRROUL IS NOW THE LEADER

Wests and Berkeley’s wins now has just four points separating the top five teams.

The results of the Thirroul-Berkeley and WestsDapto matches in this week’s round will hold great importance, with only three rounds remaining. Thirroul, at Gibson Park; will be the “big test” for Berkeley. The Eagles’ form continues to show improvement and consistency. The Butchers will retain the comp. lead with a win. Dapto returned to top form with a 24-16 win over Collegians last week and will look to repeat that effort against Wests, at Parrish Park. The Devils were also back in the “winners’ circle – with their 48-4 win at Corrimal and will have support from their “old boys” day.

Collegians host Corrimal and a win could see the “Dogs” regain the lead – if Thirroul suffered a loss to Berkeley. The Cougars are yet to register their first win for the season; but are continuing to provide spirited opposition every match. The ‘Burgh have this week’s Bye; prior to all teams taking a one-week break next weekend.

DAY FOR CALEB

ILLAWARRA DIVISION GIRLS UNDER 18 SQUAD

The mighty Helensburgh Tigers have been driving an effort to support the family of Caleb Clark which has raised around $50,000. Members of the clubs senior men’s and women’s teams will descend on the Clark family home in Stanwell Park when they have the bye on Saturday, to create a pathway and access ramp to improve wheelchair access for Caleb. Our major partner in The Hardware Man are generously getting behind this great initiative of the Tigers by donating materials to assist their efforts. What an outstanding effort by the Helensburgh club and the Hardware Man!

WHEN IT DOESN’T JUST MATTER ON THE FIELD

Representatives from all the Inspirations Paint Illawarra Under 18 teams will form an Illawarra Division squad to participate in the inaugural NSWRL U16 Lisa Fiaola Cup at Ruse on Saturday. These girls are our future stars of the game and will soon get a chance to wear the Steelers jersey in the Tarsha Gale Cup in the coming years. We wish them all the best in all games which will be played in the 9s format.

DEATHS OF FOUR ILLAWARRA RUGBY LEAGUE IDENTITIES

Illawarra Rugby League suffered the loss of four great personalities last week – all having contributed to our game in this region. Berkeley’s BRIAN HODGES was a founding official of the Eagles. He was also a life-member of both Illawarra Junior and Senior Leagues; past president of the Junior League and a vice-president of Illawarra Senior Rugby League. Three former First Grade players also passed away – BRUCE SMITH (Thirroul captain and Sth. Division rep. against Great Britain, 1950); PETER THOMPSON (Collegians and Wests) and JOHN NEDEN (Wollongong). All three forwards gave outstanding service to their clubs and rep. teams.

CLOSE SCORES IN SHIELD GAMES

SHIELD POINTS TABLE Wests Mt Kembla Windang Avondale Norths

Both Hardware Man Shield matches produced close results last weekend. Norths celebrated a big day of club activities with a 1710 victory over Mt. Kembla; while defending premiers Windang held current comp. leader Wests to a creditable 8-16 loss. This was Wests’ closest result of the 2018 season to date. The Windang-Avondale match, which was abandoned earlier in the season; will be the only Shield game to be played next week; with the re-play at Boronia Park.
