Our students do meaningful work here. • Team up with a professor to study an enzyme that might lead to cracking the code of stomach cancer. • Do an internship at the state capitol one summer, and with the Environmental Protection Agency the next. • Conduct field research to help solve global warming, or track Austin’s diverse wildlife population to learn how to make cities wildlife friendly.
Could you be next?
• Bring Broadway plays to life in an award-winning theater program, or explore how drawing teaches you about making your mark in the world. • Teach storytelling techniques to students in Tanzania, or help disadvantaged school kids in Austin with their homework.

MY WINDOW INTO S.E.R.V.E. AUSTIN I’ve volunteered for two semesters through Campus Ministry’s “St. Edward’s, Reflect, Volunteer, Engage Austin” program, or S.E.R.V.E. Austin. I was a math classroom coach, teaching lessons once a week for small groups of seventhand eighth-graders, and I helped elementary-school kids with their homework in an after-school program.
MY FIRST SERVICE BREAK IN NEW ORLEANS On my Service Break Experience (SBE) trip my freshman year, our group worked with a disaster-relief nonprofit to repair a house that was affected by Hurricane Katrina. I didn’t realize that people are still suffering from the effects of Katrina 13 years later. Our goal was to have the entire house drywalled by the end of the week. It was tough, but we got it done on the last day.
MY TAKEAWAY FROM SBE The purpose of these service journeys is not to “save people,” but rather to learn about various social-justice issues and offer our support to these populations in the best way possible. I think my experiences have taught me how to be more patient and understanding of people’s circumstances.
MY BIG LEADERSHIP POSITION The BIG Event is a national day of service that St. Edward’s has participated in for 16 years. We have sites all over the city where people can volunteer — parks, food banks, shelters. My freshman year I worked with about 15 other students to repaint the exterior of a house. My sophomore year I worked on the BIG Event registration committee, and this year I’m the director of the entire event.

ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY IS CLOSE TO THE BEST OF AUSTIN
THE ST. EDWARD’S – AUSTIN BALANCE St. Edward’s is a smaller school, but being in Austin, you have so many different places to enjoy, like shops and restaurants on South Congress, and Zilker Park. It’s a good balance between academics and social life.

MY FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM IN AUSTIN The Hideout Theatre is a coffee shop with a theater upstairs. I like going to their free improv show on Thursdays with friends. We always end up laughing.
WHY I LOVE ACL The Austin City Limits music festival runs for three days in Zilker Park, and I always go with friends. It’s such a cool experience because the crowds are great and the artists interact with the fans.
