Lake Diefenbaker WHAT QUOTES BEST DESCRIBE LAKE DIEFENBAKER? When we hear the quote “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”, we get excited about the days we get to spend at Lake Diefenbaker and the hours we get to spend mastering our wakeboarding flips! We want you to get your adrenaline pumping and jump in with us to Lake Diefenbaker. With 150 miles of wide open water, you be can sure to find your adrenaline rush on your own piece of the lake!

WHAT IF WE DON’T HAVE A BOAT? No worries! We’ve got you covered! This activities guide is full of useful information that covers everything for your convenience. We have three full service marinas and four boat rental locations with a variety of boats to choose from! See page 17 for more information! (You’re welcome!) WHERE CAN WE RENT A CABIN? We are here to help you enjoy your stay at Lake Diefenbaker! Cabin rentals are available at four different locations around the lake. Sarah’s Cove Condo Rentals is hopeful for the 2016 season!

WHAT IS YOUR CLAIM TO FAME? Our claim to fame would definitely be the monster fish that are caught out of this lake! The Fishing Geeks themselves, Adam and Sean Konrad, have topped the list catching a 48lb Rainbow Trout and a year later, Sean caught a 25lb Burbot, we would say that is pretty impressive! The most recent however, was not ‘caught’ in the lake, but rather spear-fished! Jon Ganshorn of Saskatoon caught a record breaking 13.3lb Walleye in the fall of 2013. We are pretty proud of the size of fish that this lake houses, and we can only imagine the beasts that have not been caught yet! Of course, we always want to stress that everyone must have a valid Angling License before heading out to fish!

WE ARE INTERESTED IN VISITING, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU? On the lake of course! Just kidding....Sort of! Lake Diefenbaker is situated right in the heart of Saskatchewan and is home to three Provincial Parks, three Regional Parks and numerous lakeside communities and resort villages. For more information, visit or see the map on page 20.

Preventing Exhaustion

Hold a fish horizontal in the water until the fish has fully revived and is able to swim away on its own. You can help the fish out by moving it in an “S” shaped pattern, which allows water to run through the gills.

Land the fish as quickly as possible to prevent exhaustion. Once you have landed your fish, handle it carefully using a wet glove or wet hand to prevent damaging the fish’s protective mucus coating. Please do not hold the fish by the gills, gill cover or eyes.

Boat Launch Etiquette Learning proper boat launch etiquette can help you and fellow boaters avoid delays while keeping the process short and sweet. Please complete as much of the preparation, loading and unloading in the “staging” area as possible. 1 When arriving at the launch, park clear of the launch 2 Undo all tie downs except for the front safety chain and winch hook. 3 Load any gear from your vehicle into your boat. 4 Turn on electronics and raise motor. 5 If the launch is a double or triple launch, then keep to the side so other people can launch at the same time.

6 If you have a person with you, use them as a spotter, while backing up and have them hold the bow and stern rope. 7 Proceed to back the boat into the water. 8 If the driver is going to exit the vehicle ensure the parking brake is engaged. 9 Unhook the safety chain and winch hook and gently push boat off the trailer. 10 The spotter can now walk the boat to the end or farthest spot available on the dock and enjoy a beautiful day on the lake!

>>Sitting down with the World Record Holders

We recently had the chance to catch up with Adam and his brother Sean Konrad to talk about their impressive fishing records, which include two massive world record fish from Lake Diefenbaker.

Do you prefer ice fishing or open water fishing? Why? Open-water fishing at Diefenbaker. Fish are very active in summer months. Ice fishing can be very tough if you don’t follow the fish.

Adam and his wife Christena have two kids Lincoln and Robyn and reside in Saskatoon, while Sean Konrad and his wife Glenda reside in Spruce Grove, Alberta with one daughter Nyla. Sean and Adam both work as full time automotive service technicians, but hit the water every chance they get to guide part-time.

Would you mind talking to us about the importance of fish conservation? Over the past few years there has been a growing interest in fishing at Lake Diefenbaker. Fisheries will be conducting new regulations for sustaining a trophy fishery.

As many people already know, Lake Diefenbaker is home of the World Record Rainbow Trout (seen left) and the World Record Burbot (seen right) Both of these world records were caught by Sean & Adam; the self proclaimed Rainbow Trout 48 lbs Fishing Geeks! We thought it was only appropriate to sit down with the two guys behind it all and talk to them about their fishing experiences at Lake Diefenbaker. This what they had to say: Why do you choose to fish at Lake Diefenbaker? Multi species fishing. Surprise fish, such as Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout. Always have a chance catching some monster sized fish. What has been your best experience so far on Lake Diefenbaker? In May of 2015 Sean and I landed 7 Brown trout in one day, the largest weighing 26 lbs and in 2007 landing the World Record Rainbow Trout 43lbs 10 oz. (Adams brother Sean caught a 48 lb Rainbow Trout later on in 2009)

Brown Trout 26 lbs

Burbot 25 lbs

You and your brother are known for holding the World Record for Rainbow Trout (48lbs) and Burbot (25lbs). What is next for you guys? Chasing the rare Brown Trout is our new passion. With a provincial record this year the possibility of bigger will always be there. Do you have any tips for new fishermen/fisher-woman? Do your research on the species you want to catch. Ask for information. Walleye fishing is always good bottom bouncing worms/leaches/minnows. For the complete article on these world records, you can visit

Hitchcock’s Cabin - The site of Jack Hitchcock’s cabin still stands

at Hitchcock Bay is where a man who carved his own reputation and lifestyle into Lake Diefenbaker history. Jack Hitchcock, a western pioneer settled near Hitchcock Bay in 1903. This particular spot appealed most to him as it was sheltered in winter and there wasn’t much of a chance of being burned out by prairie fires in the summer. Jack lived in a tent the first winter and built his own shack the spring of 1904. The cabin that is still standing was declared the first historical building in Saskatchewan. Jack was never seen away from his cabin without his six shooter on, cartridge belt full of live ammo, and his gun with six live rounds in it. To check it out for yourself, please call Barb and/or Reinhold Janke of Hitchcock’s Hideaway: 1.877.442.6259 or visit

You want to experience the Trans Canada Trail, but a dusty pathway on a hot summer day is not top of mind. Why not get out of your comfort zone, and try a piece of the 100 kilometer section of the TC Trail on the South Saskatchewan River. This premium Saskatchewan Blueway was dedicated in June of 2015 as the “Chief Whitecap Waterway,” named for an inspiring First Nation leader from the Whitecap First Nation. The 2015 Explore Magazine featured the waterway - one of “Canada’s Best Micro-adventures.” You can begin under the shadow of Gardiner Dam, and experience the original water highway across the Canadian Prairies, “Kisiskatchewani Sipi,” meaning swift flowing river in Cree. Take an 8 hour paddle to Outlook, or a multiday trip to Whitecap and Saskatoon. Create your own adventure, travel back in time and paddle in the wake of “coureur de bois” fur traders – 55 strokes a minute, 14 hours a day – with smoke breaks every 2 hours. If you are a little more relaxed, soak up the spectacular flora and fauna of this near pristine river valley. Paddle-boards, canoes and kayaks are available to rent at the Pavilion on Gardiner Dam. Fire-pits and BBQ available for use at camping spots along the waterway. For more information and updates, visit us on the web at

Located near the Sandcastles southwest of Beechy. In 1949, John Minor Sr. and his wife drove across this plateau to check the cattle. Three days later a rider on horseback checked the cattle again and found that this hill had slipped down to its present level. The car tracks could be seen ending on one cliff, appearing on the grass of the sunken hill and reappearing again on the other side of the cliff. A natural gas pocket, underground lake, or quicksand could be the cause of the slide. Cracks in the coulée can still be seen along the sides of the hill.
