WELCOME TO ARTS ALIVE 2018 Twenty-four years and still going strong!

Ours is now one of the largest Arts Festivals in the South East and we are delighted to welcome you to this year’s Festival and our new, user-friendly, listings magazine. What you are now reading could not have happened without the tireless work of new Committee Member and retired publishing director, Peter Steadman, who has brought together some heavyweights of the publishing world. We hope you like this VantagePoint sized magazine which will fold to slip easily into your pocket or handbag and will stack nicely on shop counters. We are very grateful for the support of the advertisers who have come with us on this journey. Changing format is pretty adventurous, so we encourage you to support these local businesses – not just during the Festival, but all year round. With more events coming in each year we decided to divide the event listings into three periods – Pre-Festival (1st–27th September), Festival (28th September–31st October) and Festival Extra (which almost takes us up to Christmas!) We hope you like this idea, along with the new category index which will help you find events of particular interest. We are so pleased that, as ever, there is so much variety to offer old friends and new. Don’t forget our Creative Celebration Days in Leatherhead on 15th September, and in Dorking on 22nd September. And an absolutely must attend is this year’s even grander Grand Finale at Dorking Halls on Friday 2nd November with the addition of displays from local groups as well as Mole Valley’s finest talent on stage! We are delighted that best-selling author Rowan Coleman has agreed to be our Patron this year. Rowan took part in the Harvest Book Club session last year and we knew we had to ask her to be part of the Festival. And, finally, none of this could happen without the hard work of all the groups and individuals putting on shows, concerts, exhibitions and displays across Mole Valley. Plus, of course, our dedicated committee, and Mole Valley District Council, who have all worked very long hours to ensure that Arts Alive 2018 will be the best yet! Mary Huggins Festival Chairman Arts Alive has been going for 24 years now, and each year it gets bigger and better. Once again we are so pleased to support it. I continue to be impressed by the enormous range of artistic talent in Mole Valley, and the numerous arts groups in the District, generally bursting with enthusiasm and run by a few dedicated individuals. Arts Alive is a wonderful way to showcase this wide-ranging activity, and I urge you to just look and marvel at the line-up of events. Not only are you likely to find something that appeals to your current interests, but I have found in previous years there will also be events on topics that may be new to you that you may find you will enjoy. I wish all involved, as participants or organizers, a most enjoyable and beneficial experience. This is something of which Mole Valley District Council is immensely proud – a great contribution to the enhancement of art of all kinds as a part of the cultural life of Mole Valley. Cllr David L Hawksworth CBE, MVDC Cabinet Member for Well-being 4

Arts Alive Festival 2018 • Patron: Rowan Coleman Rowan Coleman’s first novel Growing Up Twice was a WHS Fresh Talent Winner. Since then, Rowan has written fifteen novels, including The Memory Book which was a Sunday Times bestseller. It was selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club and awarded Love Reading Novel of the Year, as voted for by readers. Her latest novel, The Summer of Impossible Things, is a Zoe Ball TV Book Club selection.

Rowan lives with her husband and their five children in a very full house in Hertfordshire, juggling writing novels with raising her family. She really wishes someone would invent time travel.
