Greetings! As the weather gets warmer and the snow melts away, we look forward to those warm Spring days when we can be out with our kids. Participating in a parent-child class can be a fun activity for you and your child. Early Childhood Education offers many classes, workshops, events and other opportunities designed to give families information, ideas and skills to support their child’s growth and development from birth to kindergarten entry. Join other families for one of our many ECFE classes: Itsy Bitsy Yoga, Parents and Infants, Family Time, A Place to Play, Super Saturdays for Dads and Kids, A Taste of Preschool and more! Give your child the gift of a great preschool experience and pave their way to school success! Preschool Registration has begun and we are happy to announce that District 742 now offers preschool at all elementary schools and Colts Academy! District 742 Preschool program received the highest possible rating — four out of four stars — from “Parent Aware,” an organization which measures best practices identified by research that help children succeed. We are proud to be a 4 Star Parent Aware preschool program! Don’t miss our free events! Run & Read (February 25 and March 25 at Colt’s Academy), Spring Fling (May 9 at Discovery Community School) and Celebration of Fatherhood (June 17 at Lake George). For more information, call 320-253-5828 or visit www.isd742.org/ earlychildhood. Julie Midas Director of Early Childhood Education

Welcome! Spring is the perfect time to discover our Early Childhood Education offerings. It provides all students and parents the opportunity to explore Early Childhood Family Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood Screening and St. Cloud Area School District 742 Preschool programing to meet a variety of needs and desires. It’s the ideal way to engage, develop and grow our students — together with our community. Willie Jett Superintendent of St. Cloud Area Public Schools

What is ECFE? Welcome to ECFE Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) believes that parents are the child’s first and most important teacher. We provide quality learning opportunities and resources for parents and their children from birth to kindergarten entry. Parents and children attend ECFE class together. If ECFE is new to you, we invite you to arrange a visit/tour of our Early Childhood Center. A typical ECFE class includes: GROWING TOGETHER: For You and Your Child Play with your child as he or she explores and learns in a play environment. Grow together through art, music, story books and other age-appropriate toys and activities. GROWING INDEPENDENTLY: For Your Child During their play and snack time, the early childhood educator will guide children as they interact with others and as they continue to develop positive attitudes about themselves. GROWING CONFIDENTLY: For You Join other parents, in an informal setting, for discussion led by a licensed parent educator. Parents have the opportunity to share ideas and feel encouraged with the support of others. FEES Fees for ECFE classes are based on income. No family will be excluded because of inability to pay.

Our Mission Our Mission is to create a safe and caring climate and culture in which we prepare, engage, educate, empower and inspire all learners in partnership with their surrounding community to be successful in today’s and tomorrow’s society.

“A secure, flexible and trusting relationship with at least one caring adult is the single most important predictor of a child’s academic and social competence.” ~ dr. terri rose

From Minnesota Fathers & Families Network www.mnfathers.org “Research has shown that fathers, no matter what their income or cultural background, can play a critical role in their children’s education. When fathers are involved, their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.” us department of education, “a call to commitment: father’s involvement in children’s learning.”

For Parents Encourage your child to listen to and use language to express ideas. Take time each day to listen to and talk with your child. While traveling together • Turn off the radio, CD or DVD player in your car as you and your child are going places together. • Encourage your child to talk with you about where you are going and what might happen when you get there. • Invite your child to tell you something he or she enjoyed doing that day. At home together • Turn off the TV or computer and spend a few minutes talking with your child about things which interest him or her. • Talk with your child about some things each of you did that day

Involve your child in activities which require listening and following directions. Give your child directions that involve two steps. Here are some examples: • Take off your shoes and put them in the closet. • Pick up your plate and put it in the sink. • Hop to the door and open it. Give your child an object such as a small ball or a bean bag. Ask your child to do certain things with the object. Here are some examples: • Put the ball under your chin. • Put the ball up in the air and then down on the floor. • Let your child tell you some things to do with the ball. Encourage him or her to use words such as under, over, behind, in front of, beside, on top of, etc.

Use pictures to encourage your child to express ideas. Collect magazine pictures which show action. • Pictures of children playing together, a family in a car or a team playing a sport, for example. • Let your child look at the pictures one at a time. Ask your child to tell you what he or she thinks is happening in each picture.

Read or tell stories which have characters of different sizes. Read or tell the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. • Have your child show you the pictures of the little Billy Goat, the middle Billy Goat and the big Billy Goat. • Suggest that your child draw pictures of the three Billy Goats Gruff. Notice if he or she draws 3 sizes of goats. Websites: www.workingfam.org http://www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content3/AmericaReads/preschol.html

Spring 2017

Early Childhood Screening is a free check of how your 3-year-old is growing, developing and learning. The screening includes a developmental assessment, vision and hearing testing, height and weight measurement and an immunization and health history review. The purpose of this FREE screening is to identify children who may need additional time and experiences to be ready for school. The sooner we get started, the more likely your child will begin school with the necessary skills to succeed. TO SCHEDULE A SCREENING APPOINTMENT: call: 320-253-5828 online: www.isd742.ce.eleyo.com
