4 June 2019 Dear Parents and Caregivers, RE: Unit 2 Outreach Program - What’s in Water? In a laboratory program at the University of Melbourne, students will connect theory with practice by analysing water samples for salts or organic compounds using HPLC, UV/Vis Spectroscopy or Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The workshops assist students with VCE Chemistry Unit 2. Students will complete an analysis on one of the following instruments and see the operation and examine the workings of selected other instruments. Date:

Transport:

Arrival •Meet at Essendon railway station at 7.50 am •Train departs Essendon station at 8.05 am •Train arrives at Melbourne Central station at 8.20 am •Students walk to tram stop 8 – Melbourne Central Station / Swanston Street •Tram departs at 8.27 am - take tram towards East Coburg •Tram arrives at 8.35 am at stop 1 - Melbourne University / Swanston Street (Carlton) •Students walk about 180 meters to Masson Rd, Parkville (The School of Chemistry) Departure •Students walk from Masson Rd, Parkville (The School of Chemistry) to tram stop 9 – Haymarket / Elizabeth Street (Melbourne City) – approximately 10-15 minutes’ walk •Tram departs 12.21pm - take tram 59 towards Airport West •Tram arrives 12.46 pm at stop 41 - Fletcher street / Napier street •Students walk approximately 240 meters to Essendon station •Students catch the 465 bus towards Keilor Park at 12.52 pm arriving at 12.55 pm at corner of Prospect St / Buckley Street •Students walk approximately 5 minutes to school

Meals:

Packed lunch

Mobile Phones: Students are permitted to bring their phone for essential communication, photography and audio/video recordings relating to our field studies. It is expected they will use these respectfully and maturely. Medication:

If your son is taking regular medication we ask that it be handed to Ms Samantha Forbes or Mr Paul Tanko on the morning of excursion so that it can be stored with the medical supplies. Please note that all medication must be administered by a staff member.

Dietary Needs:

Please ensure your child’s dietary requirements are up to date on their MySBC profile.

Expectations:

Students are required to follow all College rules whilst attending this excursion

What to bring:

Students are to bring stationary including a ruler and calculator along with their MYKI card for transport purposes.
