Story & Photos By George McQuade, Status LA Mag. contributor Normally when such blockbuster movies as Liongate’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Park 2 premieres, the movie stars eyes are all on the flashing cameras and TV crews in the press box on the red carpet. But on this big night (Nov. 12, 20212), at the Nokia Center L.A. Live Theater in downtown Los Angeles, stars like Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli and other celebs spent more time signing autographs and allowing fans to take their pictures more than the media. The U-shape setup is a trademark of Lionsgate’s style. Unlike The world famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA, where fans traditionally line up across the street on Hollywood Blvd., LA Live at Nokia Center in downtown LA allows the screaming fans to camp out for five days opposite of the media, but close enough for autographs and digital cameras. The stars know too well they wouldn’t be where they are today without the fans. Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+ and other social networks globally expose stars to a new fan base so when this epic finale premieres in London and Europe later this week, fans already know what to expect. The much anticipated teenage phenomenon film opens nationwide on Friday Nov. 16th. 11

Underneath all those screaming fans are shout outs from cameramen in the press box, “turnaround Kristen, over the shoulder Robert and look over here Taylor.” The advance of high speed access, smart phones, Ipads and other handheld devices has change the traditional style of covering celebrities at premiers. Fans first media second. The film and teenage phenomenon premiere attracted 2,000 fans. This is the epic finale of novelist Stephenie Meyer's four best sellers and this is probably the most violent of the teenage phenomenon movie about the girl-vampirewerewolf love triangle. The worldwide blockbuster is sure to please obsessive fans, who spend a week just to get in the front row for an photo together with their idol stars. The fans are sure to love this mega hit that has made three actors overnight sensations. The last two adaptations of the book were actually split into projects “Breaking Dawn-Part 1 and this Friday “Break Dawn Part 2.” The both last year and this years hit was directed by Bill Condon, who is has mastered horror movies. This one is no different.

TIFFANY PRESENTS THE WORLD’S RAREST FANCY COLOR DIAMONDS Exclusive Colors of Wonder Collection Highlights Tiffany’s 175th Anniversary New York, NY —Tiffany & Co., the premier jeweler, presents a collection of fancy color diamonds that is a milestone in its great diamond heritage. The debut of Colors of Wonder: The Rarest Diamonds in the World is momentous both because of the extreme rarity of the stones and because they are introduced during Tiffany’s 175th anniversary. “These diamonds are the most sought-after stones in the world,” said Jon King, Executive Vice President, Tiffany & Co. “What better way to celebrate our heritage than with these magnificent treasures. It is so exciting for us to present our customers with diamonds of such superb quality and settings that showcase their magnificent color.” The collection is a marvel of nature, a glorious continuum of color that captures blossoms at peak perfection, the vibrancy of sea and sky, and the magic of fire and light. Each stone is hand cut and mounted in a custom design that reveals its captivating beauty from every angle. Tiffany Yellow Diamonds delight the eye with a tantalizing color that is as pure as sunlight. A 3.20carat fancy yellow diamond radiates glamour in a pendant with sparkling white diamonds. Drop earrings showcase two perfectly matched square emerald-cut fancy vivid yellow diamonds of 12.05 total carats. Rings with these color-saturated stones light up a room. A 15.04-carat oval fancy vivid yellow diamond in an open setting of white diamonds lifts the spirit with its sunny hue. A 6.14-carat radiant cut fancy vivid yellow diamond is circled with a double row of bead-set white diamonds, and a 1.75-carat cushion-cut fancy vivid yellow-green diamond evokes the first sign of spring, nestled in diamonds. Elegant rings with pink diamonds bloom like roses. Among them are a 6.07-carat round modified brilliant fancy pink diamond bordered with white diamonds, and a 4.47-carat pear-shaped fancy pink diamond contour ring. A ring with an extraordinary .74-carat cushion-cut fancy vivid orange diamond pays stylish tribute both to fashion and the mysteries of the natural world. Tiffany’s blue diamonds exhibit an electrifying color. The collection includes rings with a 5.02-carat rectangular modified brilliant fancy blue diamond and a 3.15-carat rectangular modified brilliant fancy intense bluish green diamond that exude nature’s splendor with every movement. A 1.20-carat rectangular modified brilliant fancy greenish blue is surrounded by a striking Art Deco pattern of diamond baguettes. These dazzling creations take their place in a 175-year legacy of excellence epitomized by the 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond, one of the most important fancy color diamonds in the world. Tiffany’s reputation as a premier diamond jeweler is also rooted in its historic jewelry collections that were awarded gold medals at international expositions over two centuries and established Tiffany & Co. as a world-renowned jeweler. As a result, founder Charles Lewis Tiffany (1812–1902) became the jeweler of America’s growing wealthy class, who selected his lavish creations with yellow, blue and green diamonds for their galas, costume balls and weddings. Now as then, Tiffany’s colored diamonds are part of an elite class with precise rules of entry. Only about one in 10,000 diamonds is a fancy color, and Tiffany accepts only the very best of them. Each stone is precisely cut to maximize hue and must exhibit unparalleled color that is evenly distributed, with perfection of tone and saturation. To wear any one of these remarkable stones is to appreciate and to touch the rarest diamonds on earth.

STATUS NEW MUSIC

LA

By Derin Richardson, STATUS LA Mag. Contributor Forget the sky being the limit, Aussie pop star Vassy is set for the moon--and she certainly isn't stopping there. With her new album Beautiful Day, she's making treads like no other. Born Vasiliki Karagiorgos in the bright, lively city of Darwin, Australia, she quickly became the one of nation's most widely recognized pop music figures after being first recognized by the Triple J Radio Festival in 2003. "My friend submitted a song I wrote without me knowing. One day, I got a phone call from Triple J Radio saying I won song of the year," Vassy said. "I thought it was a friend playing a joke on me but it was for real." As self-proclaimed Soulful Pop/Swag Indie specialist, Vassy's style is certainly a successful amalgam of old spirit vocals and new age attitude. Interestingly, she takes inspiration from the late Billie Holiday. “She is the lady who inspired me to embrace my voice and pursue singing. I heard her at 15 and I did not know who she was and just fell in love with her voice her soul, her vulnerabilities. Her song, “Autumn in NY” made me want to move to the US.” It is no surprise that her migration to the United States garnered a greater flow of popularity, as if her music was destined to flourish here. Her songs have been featured on many shows, such as Human Target, Grey’s Anatomy and most recently, Cabin in the Woods (2012). 17

She is currently in collaboration with Bono (U2) for a song, though she is not allowed to divulge the title just yet. Her video, a remix of “We Are Young” with Grammy-nominated David Aude, is due Nov.18. Even with her commercial success, she places value in the simpler things in life. “I just want to be able to do what I love to do and live from it comfortably. Personally, I want love and family in my life and good, dear friends. Peace and happiness.”

18

Off the microphone, hiking and exploring nature are her prized pastimes, besides boxing and volunteer work. Naturally, she is a morning person. Most important of all, spending time with family is what she treasures most and they are her true impetus for her career. “My grandma, she is the queen, the most amazing woman in the world, a true soldier a true warrior, she made so many sacrifices for us. But my father drives me, his death. I made him a promise before he left and still to this day it drives me to do.” For those aspiring singers and entertainers, she only has love and encouragement.

“Don’t give up. If you believe

in it, pursue it. If you build it, they will

Inside the Mind of an Artist: Erik Wahl

By Derin Richardson, STATUS LA Mag. Contributor

How many successful business people do you know who are also accomplished painters? What about vice versa? Sounds like oil and water, right? Not for famed graffiti-artist Erik Wahl. Wahl is a trailblazer in his own right. He has successfully synthesized creativity with shrewd business gravitas--and he doesn’t plan to stop there, either. Check out what he had to say about his career, his early beginnings and his take on the future of art. 22

What drives you? What is the essence of your inspiration? My internal alarm clock that brings my feet to the floor each morning is the opportunity to create from a blank canvas. To be a catalyst to inspire myself and others to grow their dreams, challenge their assumptions and break free from preconceived barriers or notions. What was the key defining moment that made you decide to pick up the paintbrush again after so many years? Broken ego and unmet expectations. I was lost and vulnerable and rudderless. I had defined myself by success as it relates to wealth. The more money I had accumulated the more success I owned. Well…..I lost all of my money but found cathartic release in an inexpensive expression of art to work out the kinks of this mid life existential crisis. You've been quoted in saying "playing it safe was no longer an option. It was time to get drastic." What did you mean by that exactly? “I played it safe for 20 years” school turned me into a robot. I was good knockin’ out grades in standardized testing formats. I was responsible. I was predictable. I was boring. I went to a good business school like I was “supposed to”. I memorized their industrial factory formulas and regurgitated answers back to my professors without ever creating an original thought along the way. My passions were lulled to sleep. At the age of 30 I discovered Art again for the first time. It was time to wake up….. It was time to open a new chapter to life. I needed to re-invent a more passionate engaging persona that didn’t care about status or money. It was wildly liberating and contrarian to everything that I had been taught. Compared to other artists out there, would you say that your combination of corporate expertise and refined artistry sets you in a league of your own? I am in a league of my own swimming in blue ocean which is why this has been so explosive. There are some phenomenal artists that I have experienced. And there are some phenomenal academic think tanks that I have seen. But my strategy has been to mash those two elements together. To blaze a new trail mixing oil and water. Yin and yang. Art and science. Provide both artistic entertainment with business strategy. It is an intoxicating elixir

23

What would you say is your finest work? Your most challenging? My finest work is yet to be revealed. It will combine all of my corporate clients and all of my celebrity artistic connections. It will take place on June 4, 2013. It is exciting and challenging because it is real. It is my BHAG dream actually in motion. It is spectacular. You did an amazing 10,000 square-foot portrait of Mona Lisa. How long did that take? I carved the 10,000 square foot Mona Lisa out of the dessert using back hoes and dump trucks and helicopters for perspective. We also used multi valued organic rock as a palette to create value. I used mathematical formulas and collaborative sets of artistic eyes to make this dream happen. It took two full days of working frantically from dawn till dusk to create and then we wrote, scripted, casted and directed a film around this experience. It was an impressive orchestration of talents to have pulled this off. It seems as though you tend to do portraits in an inverted fashion. Is that a technique unique to your style? I use negative space to carve images. “the space between the musical notes” that is

How important are your surroundings (ambience, environment, etc.) when you are creating? Ambience is critical for my creative production. I surround myself with creative catalysts. Live music, inspiring poetry, quotes, art museums, other thought leaders. I like to connect dots of excellence in both business and art 24

You have a rather genius project known as "Art Drop" which allows anyone who's into geo-cache treasure hunting a chance to own one of your art pieces. What sparked this idea? I don’t sell any of my artwork. Rather, I hide my artwork throughout the world while I am traveling on tour….and then geocache it in an on line treasure hunt. First to find it….gets to keep it. I start most of the clues from my facebook page. www.facebook.com/iamerikwahl. I launch about a contest a week while I am on the road performing. However over a four week period with my tour schedule I could be hiding a painting in Barcelona, London New York and Scottsdale. I go where my gigs are and then make them interesting by engaging my social community. Outside of painting, what are some of your other hobbies? Outside of painting I do photography to study composition and value. I write blogs as a snapshot of my ongoing thoughts and dreams. I study religion, and eastern philosophy and yoga and live holistically and naturally . I also spend a good amount of time with my family insulating ourselves from the world. What were things like in your early years? In my early years I was a robot. A product of the system. I regurgitated formulas for test so I could be receive “atta boys” from my teachers and parents for getting good grades. If you colored within the lines and scored well on a standardized test you were a good boy. I defined my childhood by being the best colorer insider the lines. I memorized someone else’s life – and the system rewarded me for that.

25

In your opinion, where do you see the future of painting headed? The future of art is heading outside the galleries. To online video - to the streets. The renegades write the rules. The thinkers, the thought leaders the innovators are not commoditizing their art they are building a community of loyal followers. Banksy, Shephard Fairy, Invader. They have a beautifully subversive message that transcends the photo-realistic 9x12 perfectly framed beach scene at your local gallery. Being provocative is where art is going. . Banksy the “the”provacatuer” he makes his audience laugh, think and then covet

What is your message to those aspiring artists out there?

Photo © Erik Wahl

Paint for the trash can. The world will judge you box you in and critique your work. But they don’t’ paint - they are not artists. They don’t know the feeling of what it is like to be vulnerable. Artists are hero’s willing to endure the slings and arrows of angry and misguided critiques. Paint for yourself. Be true to your message. Capture your vulnerable transparent self on canvas. Be aware of what trends are selling but create your work that inspires you. At the moment you tap out and create for someone else you have lost a critical element of your artistic genius.

You're an island baby, what are some of the perks/challenges of growing up on the beautiful island of Hawai'i? It's not all sea turtles and coconuts. It's a really beautiful place and an incredibly stable base from which to spring into the world-- very calm and peaceful. Now that I am an adult, I can appreciate it all much more-- however, as a child and teen, I was a little more driven and focused than my peers-- always pushing myself and wanting to expand further and further. There is only so far you can expand on an island in the middle of the Pacific. I was really interested in the arts, training very seriously in classical ballet, and very focused on my education. I graduated from high school at age 15 and began my degree at the University of Hawaii the same year. As a credit to the Big Island, the reason I was able to accomplish a lot at such a young age was because there were not any distractions, but at the same time, I did constantly long for more stimulation. My parents were wonderful, though, they made sure I was always engaged in all the activities the island had to offer, enrolled me in the right schools, and exposed me to a great deal of travel and art. Your father is a scientist and your mother an artist, what was it like growing up with parents who view the world through lenses controlled by opposite hemispheres of the brain? I feel I had a very balanced childhood because of it-- equal doses of logic and imagination. They are a great pair and extraordinary parents-- they are still very much in love and going strong after 33 years. What made you transfer from University of Hawai'i Hilo to Skidmore College in New York? I had left the University of Hawaii when I began acting professionally-- a transition that happened rather unexpectedly at age 16, when I was cast in the lead role of a film that Universal was shooting in Hawaii. I had never planned on becoming an actor, but seemed to have a natural ability for it and decided to explore it further after the movie wrapped. I moved to LA continued to have success in the industry. I decided to complete my college degree a few years into my career, choosing Skidmore mainly because of the interdisciplinary aspect of their undergraduate program-- and because upstate New York is absolutely beautiful. So what's life like right now? Anyone special in your life? My acting career has been keeping me very busy. I have also been doing a lot of writing lately-editorial pieces for various publications. I have several business ideas that are in various stages of being birthed into the world. There are a lot of very special people in my life-- but as for romance, my partner at the moment is my work and all of my interests. I have been in long term relationships for the entire inception of my adulthood, and while I look forward to finding the one, I am really enjoying this period of having the space to envision what I want my life to look like and create it. What are some of your hobbies? I'm not sure that I can still call writing a hobby now that I am doing it somewhat professionally, but I will list it anyway. I read a lot of books and watch way too much news. I paint. I ride horses. I go to ballet class. I love being on and in the ocean. I cook quite a bit. I'm looking forward to ski season.

30

How often do you get to visit your family in Hawai'i? I usually go back once or twice a year, but in the past few months I have been back and forth quite a bit to spend more time with them.

Photo By Angela Marklew We've heard dance is your first love, followed closely by drama. Is that accurate? How did you feel when you got the best of both worlds and were cast in the Black Swan with Natalie Portman? Dance is my first love, yes. Being cast in Black Swan was an absolute dream come true. The casting process was a long one and during the weeks of waiting for the final word, I decided that I should take ballet class everyday. I figured I would be happy I had if I ended up booking the role, and at least I would be in amazing shape if I did not. I really got my ballerina groove back after a few weeks. During one workshop with a guest instructor from London's Royal Ballet, the said instructor, who had been very critical of everyone in the class (all professional dancers except for me) came to a halt three inches in front of my nose. As I braced myself for the inevitable crushing criticism and humiliation, she announced to me and the entire class that she has been searching for something-anything--wrong with my technique and she simply could not find a thing. I said "really???" way too loudly--an awkward silence filled the room as I received dirty looks from the rest of the dancers, and then we got back to work. I ran to my car after class and burst into tears, feeling like I should have obviously followed my original dream of being a professional ballerina, when I realized, looking tearfully skyward, that I could still live out my dream if I got the part in Black Swan. My agent phoned just a few hours later and told me that the part was mine. That was a really great day.

31

Have you ever thought of opening your own school? The thought has crossed my mind-- I would love to give kids on the Big Island an opportunity for greater exposure to the arts without having to venture to Oahu or the mainland. It's a place with so much untapped talent and potential. What has been your favorite project to act in? What are your favorite film & TV show of all time? True Blood has been my favorite project to act in, without question. It's such a pleasure to come to work everyday. My alltime favorite film is Amadeus and all-time favorite TV show is Downtown Abbey. Do you have any upcoming movie/TV projects? Two films I am very excited about, Sighting and BlackJacks, will be released next year. I am about to begin filming on another very cool project, "Near Myth: The Oskar Knight Story" written and directed by an author and playwright I really admire. If you were to produce and/or direct your own film, what would the story be about? There a lot of subject matters I'd like to explore. Basically, anything that encourages people to wake up and become more conscious of who they are and why they are here. I recently formed a production company, Amygdala Films (www.amygdaladilms.com). We have several projects in development, but nothing I can talk about publicly quite yet.

2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 By Derin Richardson, STATUS LA Mag. Contributor Think you can ride an Italian bull that can sprint up to 60 miles per hour in three seconds and has a mean temper to boot? If you like complete road domination, set your sights on the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster.

Of course, it is somewhat rare Lamborghini releases a brand new car, so this new model is something to take pretty seriously. It shares nearly everything the LP-700 coupe variant has, including the monstrous 691-horsepower V-12 motor. What it does sport exclusively is a seven speed, ISR automated transmission to harness all that strength underneath the hood and a cylinder deactivation system for fuel economy. Also, a pushrod suspension will take the place of the company's standard. Not to mention this bull is 20% leaner as well. With an even more geometrically-aggressive design than its predecessors and a more compact frame than it's older brother, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster will certainly set the streets ablaze. 37
