THE CRICKET INN

with alfresco dinning overlooking the bay on those warm summer days.

The Cricket is located in the old fishing village of Beesands nestling between the crystal clear waters off Start Bay and the South Hams countryside. The Inn opened its doors in 1867 but has been sympathetically extended and modernised catering to locals and tourist alike, the walls are adorned with many black & white photos of yesteryear and the bar is stocked with local ales and organic soft drinks, and is very dog friendly.

The Cricket has 7 beautifully appointed letting rooms all en suite most with breath taking views of Start Bay achieving 4 AA Stars of excellence for the last 7 years, an idyll spot for a weekend break or a stopover on that walking holiday.

This is truly a family business with a warm welcome from Nigel & Rachel as you arrive, to their son Scott running a brigade of chefs producing awardwinning food. They offer fresh local produce some of which come directly out of the bay in front of the Inn or from the farmlands behind, it does not think in ‘food miles’ but in ‘food meters’ catering for small intimate dining to large functions (100+),

‘Don’t take our word for it go and see for yourself’.

PICTURE SOUTH HAMS PHoTo | VIDeo | ArT Sometimes a new business starting up in the local area can bring with it a breath of fresh air. Matt Smith started www.picturesouthhams.com after returning to Aveton Gifford from London, having made TV shows for several years. He set out to create a place where he could write and create on a blank canvas, with complete creative discretion. This began in the form of an online blog. If you take a look at www.picturesouthhams.com you will find fascinating articles from developing 35mm film at home with Leo Brousson, to John Ashton on his techniques for painting from photographs. Over the last year since its creation, the blog has grown and evolved quite dramatically. Last month Matt opened an online store on the website, selling the work of the artists and photographers he has been working with over the past year. The selection of high end giclée prints available are both diverse in style and stunning to look at. Picture South Hams may not have been about for very long, but it is most definitely one to watch if you're interested in locally produced photography and art. THE MILLBROOK INN THIS IS NO ORDINARY PUB... An infectious enthusiasm for good food led by compelling French chef, Jean-Philippe Bidart ensures a culinary journey that rarely strays very far from his Gallic routes. Nestled between a couple of old thatched cottages in the pretty creekside village of South Pool at the end of Salcombe Estuary, the pub has deservedly won plaudits for its traditional fireside feel that just happens to also turn out some rather good food. THE SHIP INN UGBOROUGH Situated on the edge of South Dartmoor in the pretty South Hams village of Ugborough, the Ship Inn is a tastefully converted 16th century cider house successfully run under the same owners for more than 25 years. Favoured by locals and tourists alike, the Ship Inn offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with both traditional charm and modern comforts. Owned and run by John and Annie Short for the past 27 years, the team’s emphasis on fresh fish and traceable properly-reared meat has earned them an excellent reputation for simple, pub dining with an extensive menu and daily specials on the chalkboard. The restaurant serves a wide variety of dishes from a Westcountry inspired menu with the team of chefs – led by Mark Fice and Graham Munson - working closely together to create seasonal dishes, while remaining true to British pub food.

“One dish that you can always find on the menu is scallops and we also run a ‘fish and chip’ night every Tuesday, which has proved very popular with both the locals and holiday-makers in the summer months. On Sundays, there’s also a traditional roast with all the trimmings.” Integral to the establishment’s success has been longstanding staff member, Paul Honeywill, who works as restaurant manager. Paul said: “Over the past 27 years I’ve been here we’ve seen a set of loyal, regular customers while regularly welcoming new diners.” To mark their 25th anniversary John and Annie decided to update the olde worlde pub décor, and the interior has been ‘refreshed’ while retaining its traditional charm with oak and flagstone flooring, low timber beams and log fires. The team also celebrated its 25th anniversary by winning Devon Life’s 2011 Best Dining Pub of the Year at the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards. Fore more information visit www.shipinnugborough.com or call 01752 892565 to book a table.

Regular customers are fond of the ‘pub grub’ classics including the steak and ale pie and the infamous ‘junket’, highlighting the demand for simplicity and value for money. “We offer an a la carte menu as well as more traditional pub dishes on our ever changing specials board,” said John. “We like to have a strong emphasis on fresh fish and I get the ferry to Torpoint once a week to collect direct from the fishmonger there.

Village Life in Newton Ferrers ''Simply South Hams'' magazine takes a look at village life in the much sought after property areas of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo Marchand Petit expanded into their Newton Ferrers office in 2004 and swiftly became a recognised brand in the area. The experienced and professional Newton Ferrers team who can sell your home – from a small apartment to a country house – can also help you find one in Newton Ferrers or any of the surrounding villages. Newton Ferrers

History

Newton Ferrers is a little slice of tranquillity just 10 miles from the urban sprawl of Plymouth. Surrounded by ancient woodland and creeks, the village of Newton Ferrers sits on the banks of the beautiful Yealm estuary. It’s a hidden gem packed with wildlife and has a secret, tranquil atmosphere. If you’re looking for thatched cottages and a lovely village pub in the centre, then this village is everything you’d expect from a picture postcard idyll.

Newton was recorded in the Doomsday book, and then named after the Norman Nobleman ‘Ferrers’ becoming Newton Ferrers. There was a lifeboat station at Newton Creek until 1927, and fishing was a major source of income for the area’s inhabitants for a long time.

SIMPLY SOUTH HAMS

Things to do Newton Ferrers lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’re looking for

peace, tranquillity and a leisurely day on or off the water, the charming Newton Creek is a narrow tidal inlet on the River Yealm and perfect for exploring the area. The Warren is a very beautiful stretch of coastline nearby, and circular walking routes take you along the sea and through ancient woodlands. Food and drink The Dolphin is the place in Newton Ferrers for quality food, a great atmosphere, friendly service and picturesque views of the creek. The Dolphin

Across the water there is the Ship Inn, while in the centre of the village you’ll find Pellows serving home cooked lunches and gloriously indulgent Devon cream teas. Something a little different A real hidden gem for you to discover is the unspoilt Mothecombe beach. Large, sheltered and ideal for bathing, Mothecombe is a private beach but is open to the public on Wednesdays and at weekends. The rock pools are a favourite with children looking for critters and creepy crawlies.

Village Life in Noss Mayo

Noss Mayo The pretty little village of Noss Mayo is hidden away on the southern bank of the Yealm estuary. Across the water is the larger village of Newton Ferrers, and you can get between the two villages by a ferry that operates a triangular route and calls in at the SW Coastal Path, Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. This ancient and secluded village is an ideal location if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and simply ‘mess about on the river’. History Despite being a village of just over 500 people, Noss Mayo has a colourful history. Although the nearby

SIMPLY SOUTH HAMS

estate of Membland was mentioned in the Domesday Book, the first record of the parish is in 1198. In 1287 King Edward I gave Mathew Fitzjohn the manor of ‘Stok’ and so the village became known as Noss Mayo, which translates as ‘Mathew’s Nose’. The village survived the Black Death and, because of its prime location on the Yelm estuary, became a smuggler’s haunt. Things to do If you’re a committed ‘twitcher’, Noss Mayo is a bird watcher’s paradise. The estuary is home to flocks of migratory birds as well as many native species. There are also plenty of opportunities for walkers and

ramblers to explore the area, with the Coastal Path on three sides and the village’s own special walk, ironically known as ‘The Drive’. The estuary is also great for sailing and if you’re an angler, the fishing is excellent. Food and drink If you’re using Noss Mayo as your base and are happy to travel a little further to the beach, try the Venus Café at Bigbury-on-Sea. This award winning and environmentally friendly café in a stunning beachside location provides hungry customers with a tasty all-day menu. They only use locally sourced and organic ingredients, and offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.

Something a little different Noss Mayo has inspired artists and painters for centuries and there is still a thriving artist’s community in nearby Newton Ferrers. That special South Devon ‘light’ that has motivated so many great artists bathes the entire estuary, making it inspirational for today’s artists. Why not bring your brushes and paints with you and see if it can inspire your creative side too? Marchand Petit’s Newton Ferrers office is located at The Green, Parsonage Road close to Pellows tea rooms and can be contacted on 01752 873311 www.marchandpetit.co.uk www.visitsouthdevon.co.uk

On The Green Bus will be available for hire all year round and does not just do events and catering. The team are planning a number of daytime food safaris through the South Hams countryside that anyone can hop on to, visiting some of the area’s finest food producers.

The specially converted Vintage Routemaster caters for parties, weddings, events, conferences, festivals and also special bespoke trips around the stunning South Hams.

Keep an eye out too for ad hoc pop-up suppers from this restaurant-on-wheels in some of the county’s most beautiful and iconic places.

NEW HOMES • 137

New Homes and Land in the South Hams Welcome to the New Homes section of Simply South Hams. Well 2013 was a busy year and the signs are promising for 2014. Many of our developments sold out last year and several of our other schemes have only a few units remaining, including Salcombe Heights, the exclusive development by award winning developer Acorn Blue, with only five houses left. I would recommend a visit as soon as you can. Estura, the development of the Salcombe Harbour Hotel is nearing completion and with more than half sold off plan we envisage the sales team beginning to be busy as the completion gets nearer. Newcomen Fields by Bloor Homes is now complete and only two properties remain, so a successful development by Bloor Homes… their first but certainly not their last in the South Hams! Many new developments are due to start during the course of the year so please watch this space for further details, or visit our website for all details of our new homes sites www.marchandpetit.co.uk.
