n Friday 27th July the London 2012 Olympic Torch ended its inspirational 70-day tour of Great Britain, having arrived here from Athens on Friday 18th May. Appropriately in this most memorable Diamond Jubilee year of national celebration, one of the final legs of its long journey to the Olympic Stadium was aboard the royal row-barge Gloriana, the flagship of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant (see page 48). A ceremonial cauldron was lit as the Torch enjoyed a leisurely cruise along the River Thames before arriving at Tower Bridge to begin the last leg of its 12875km (8000 miles) travels across Great Britain. Representing peace, unity and friendship 8000 people from all walks of life had been chosen to carry the Torch. Nominated by someone they knew, it was their moment to shine, providing encouragement and giving hope to the millions of people who gathered to watch them. Torchbearers carried the Torch through more than 1000 cities, towns and villages, coming within 10 miles of 95% of people and including the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. The London 2012 Olympic Torch features 8000 small cut-out circles representing the

8000 exceptional people chosen to carry it. Designed by East Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who won the opportunity through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council, the Torch stands 800mm high and weighs 800gsm. It is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin held in place by a cast top piece and base which is perforated by 8000 circles running the length of the body of the Torch and offering a unique level of transparency. One could see right to the heart of the Torch and view the burner system keeping the Olympic Flame alive on its journey. More than half of the London 2012 Torchbearers were as young as 12 so the designers aimed to make the Torch as light as possible. The circles not only helped to ensure heat was quickly dissipated without being conducted down the handle but provided extra grip. The triangular-shaped Torch was inspired by a series of 'threes' that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and are the vision for the Olympic Movement: • The three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch

• The three words that make up the Olympic motto - faster, higher, stronger. • The fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and now for the third time in 2012. • The vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three bodies of work - sport, education and culture. As the Torch made its way across Great Britain it truly brought the spirit and excitement of the Olympic Games to everyone. The eyes of the world upon us yet again, the evening of Friday 27th July saw the London 2012 Olympic Games explode into life in the most dramatic of ways, cascading fireworks lighting up Olympic rings. Director and creator Danny Boyle’s magnificent celebration of all things British has guaranteed that London will be able to lay claim for many years to come for producing the most original Opening Ceremony in modern memory such was its breathtaking scale and scope. The Stadium show opened to a quintessential rural idyll of happy yokels which Boyle called his ‘Green and Pleasant Land’ section, the Dockhead Choir from Southwark, South East London singing Jerusalem, a young male chorister amongst them moving many of the audience to tears with his stunning note-perfect solo. Nobody does it like Great Britain nobody. Let the Games begin!

His endurance and strength improving with age, Cavendish went into the Olympic Road Race brimming with confidence. “It’s incredible, it couldn’t be a more perfect end to an amazing Tour and I’m so proud to be part of a team that has finished first and second in general classification and won six stages on our own.” He continued “We have one more job to do now. Everything is on target and I’m looking forward to the Olympics.” Earmarked to give Great Britain the perfect start to the London 2012 Olympics by winning gold in the Men’s Road Race on Day One, alas a medal it was not to be for Cavendish, Wiggins, Froome, Millar and Stannard such is the unpredictable nature of this volatile event. The Dream Team’s goal having been to put Cavendish in a good position to take gold in a sprint finish, a breakaway group of leading riders put them on the back foot. Try as they did to bridge the gap, they failed, Alexandre Vinokourov claiming gold for Kazakhstan instead. “The crowd was tremendous the whole way around.” Cavendish stated afterwards. “The Aussies raced

n Saturday 28th July 2012, just six days after achieving an incredible 23rd Tour de France stage victory on the Champs Élysées and guaranteeing a place in the history books as the most successful sprinter in the Tour to date, the focus of a summer in which cycling fever has gripped the country like never before was on a 10-mile loop of winding road in the green hills of Surrey. Box Hill, 15 miles east of Guildford in Surrey, has for decades been a magnet for amateur cyclists drawn to the hairpin bends of its infamous National Trust Zig Zag Hill. The country’s eyes, even the eyes of the world, watched as a five-man British team, including the inspirational first British Tour de France Champion Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, took on the Hill in their bid to win Britain’s first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Men’s Road Race course was 155 miles (250km), the route taking cyclists from The Mall in central London, through west London and then out to Surrey and back. Through Surrey the route included a 9.6 mile (15.5km) circuit around Box Hill.

ark Cavendish was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, on 21st May 1985. He began riding BMX at a young age, racing at the National Sports Centre in Douglas. Once he left school he worked in a bank, concentrating on earning enough money to support himself as a full-time cyclist and attempting to turn professional. Beginning his career with the British Track Cycling Team, he won Gold in the Madison with Rob Hayles at the 2005 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles, claiming his first World Champion’s Jersey. This was a great achievement for them both as they had never raced together before. 2005 was also the year in which Cavendish began road racing, riding the Tour of Berlin and Tour of Britain as a trialist with Team Sparkasse. The beginning of 2006 saw Cavendish ride with Team Sparkasse, a feeder squad for the T-Mobile Team. At the Tour of Berlin he won two stages and both the points and sprint competitions. Riding for the Isle of Man on the track at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, he won Gold in the Scratch race. His performances through the year led him to join T-Mobile from the August until the end of the season, achieving his best performance in the Tour of Britain where he came second on three

occasions and won the points classification. At the end of 2006 Cavendish received his first professional contract for the next two years. 2007 was Cavendish’s breakthrough season when he won the Grote Scheldeprijs race in Belgium. Following on from his win in Belgium he won stages at the Four Days of Dunkirk and the Volta a Catalunya. Due to these exciting performances at the very beginning of a season, Cavendish was selected for the Tour de France. In this his debut season he continued to move forward rapidly, equalling Petacchi’s record of 11 stage wins and including 3 in the UCI Pro Tour events, Volta a Catalunya and Eneco Tour. During the 2008 season Cavendish returned to the track to compete in the Madison Track World Championships in Manchester. Partnering up with Bradley

Wiggins, the duo took Gold and helped Great Britain top the Medal table. Back on the road Cavendish picked up two wins in the Giro d’Italia and won four stages in the Tour de France, his first coming at the 5th stage from Cholet to Chateauroux. His performance in the Tour de France made him the first British rider to collect 4 stage wins in a single Tour and, at the age of just 22, he became Britain’s fourth most successful professional cyclist in history. Experiencing a bitterly disappointing 2008 Olympics, where he was the only British track cyclist not to win a medal, he announced that he had no plans to return to track cycling. However, moving quickly on from the disappointment in Beijing, Cavendish finished the season off successfully, winning a further 11 races. reside | EDITION 10 13

awards for his performances through the year and was named the ‘Most Inspirational Sportsman of the Year’ at the 2011 Jaguar Academy of Sport Annual Awards. Following the Jaguar Awards he received recognition from the Sports Journalist Association when he was awarded the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award. To top off what had been a most remarkable year for him, Cavendish won the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on 22nd December. Enjoying life with his new team, Team Sky, and dividing his time between his home on the Isle of Man and his training base in Quarrata, Tuscany in Italy, Cavendish experienced what he calls the proudest day of his life on 3rd April 2012 when his partner, Peta Todd, gave birth to their daughter, Delilah Grace. Back in the saddle, he won three stages of the Giro d’Italia before claiming his first general classification win in the Ster ZLM Toer in June. Until the Olympic Road Race on Saturday 28th July, 2012 had been a year of triumph and personal fulfilment for Cavendish. As Catherine Wiggins, wife of Bradley, tweeted after the event however “Heads high Great Britain and on your feet for Mark Cavendish.” Photo by ANP/AndyNewbold

3rd stage wins of the season at the Grote Scheldeprijs. He then took his first grand tour victory of the year at the Giro d’Italia on stage 10, following up with another win on stage 12. On 11th June 2011 it was announced that Mark Cavendish was to be appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. A simply magnificent achievement for one still so young. At the end of September Cavendish went to Copenhagen with a very strong Great British eight-man team to take part in the 2011 UCI Road World Championships. During the 266km race Team GB controlled the pace from the front but as they approached the final corner Mark got lost in the pack and seemed too far back, even for a rider with 74 professional sprint wins in just five years. Working his way through the 80-man pack from 12th, the Manx Missile made a 70km/h sprint for the line claiming Britain’s first men’s road race gold since Tom Simpson in 1965. After the race Mark hailed the GB team by saying, “There couldn’t have been another result after the way my teammates rode... it’s a shame they can’t have a world champion’s jersey.” As 2011 came to a close, Mark was nominated for a number of prestigious

Box Hill, Saturday 28th July, London 2012 Olympics, Men’s Road Race.

2009 was the year in which Cavendish entered his first classic race, San Remo. During the build-up to the race, his rivals had claimed that the climbs would make it impossible for him to win. Proving them all wrong in the last 200 metres however, he tracked down Heinrich Haussler to win the sprint narrowly... and the race. This was Mark’s first victory in a race known as one of the five monuments of cycling. Cavendish’s pre-season goals of winning the Green Jersey and the World Championships looked unrealistic as he struggled to find form at the beginning of the 2010 season, having delayed his start until midFebruary due to a dental problem. Never one to hang around, he was soon leading from the front at the Volta a Catalunya, winning the 2nd stage. After crashing out in the Tour de Suisse and the 1st stage of the Tour de France, Cavendish managed to win five further stages at the latter bringing his career total at the time to fifteen. 2011 has been his most successful year to date with Cavendish now undoubtedly the fastest man in the world on two wheels. Although he had a slow start to the season, failing to win until late February at the Tour of Oman, he soon picked up his 2nd and

ith the eyes of the world turning to our country for the London Olympics this summer, 2012 will be a truly great year for Britain. Ed Burns, owner of Advocate Gallery in Ashtead, explores how this is being reflected in the art scene. This year is definitely the time to celebrate all things British. From hosting the Olympic Games, this summer, to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Great Britain will be firmly on the world map. And with

16 reside | EDITION 10

the recent success of programmes and films that focus on British culture, such as Downton Abbey, Sherlock Holmes, Call the Midwife and The Young Victoria, interest is at an all time high and has even spread across the globe. Ralph Lauren opened his recent show at New York Fashion week to the theme from the hit British period drama, Downton Abbey and the crowd of fashion editors literally squealed with delight. Harper’s Bazaar tweeted, “Ralph Lauren is taking

us to Downton Abbey for Fall and we couldn’t be happier.” Models were dapper gents to start, in tweeds and plaids, Fair Isle knits and hounds tooth coats, all topped off with bowler hats. Then they retired for brandy and cigars in velvet smoking robes, top hats, and canes. There were classic silk and satin black evening gowns embellished with gold. “I have always loved the heritage and romance of England,' he revealed. “My collection for fall 2012 is about a modern glamour inspired by timeless character and refined elegance of an authentic way of living.” In the country side, outside Moscow they’ve just built 200 "British-style" houses and they've called the development Hyde Park, with individual houses named Dorchester, Park Lane and Windsor. It's one of several UK-themed residential areas popping up around Russia, for rich Russians with a soft spot for Britain. There are rows of big brick buildings with tall chimneys and English lawns, featuring British kitchens, where the wallpaper, in one, is tartan and the tiles have pictures of Beefeaters, red telephone boxes and people queuing at a bus stop! But is this nod to Britain just reserved for fashion, films and architecture, not at all, I think we’ll see a revival in all things British, from flags and bunting to Barbours and Mini Coopers. And it won’t stop there, at Advocate Gallery we’re already seeing evidence of it in the art world; although

British artists have always been popular, there’s a huge rise in demand for paintings with are symbolic of Britain. A prime example of this is one of our gallery’s newest, most exciting artists Theo Ore, who has created an original piece of art emulating the Union Jack flag. The result is an avant-garde take on a historic emblem. Originating as a sewn material digital design printed onto foil, the piece is laminated to PVC and floats in a handmade Perspex frame, with a neon embellishment. It looks amazing with the neon on or off. It’s bold, effective and powerful and since hanging it in our gallery window last week, we’ve had a great amount of interest. Theo’s work is beautiful like art, thought provoking with a narrative; it has been likened to the best in modern graffiti. It has its own voice and has a message that is for the viewer to interpret, it is subtle like an in-joke or an editorial illustration - it makes a connection. "I see myself as an innovator, rather than an artist. I try and avoid all traditional materials, -wood, paint, glass, canvas. We are at the cutting edge of digital imagery and print fabrication; it is this road that I have explored creatively." Says Theo. Theo's work is beautifully put together, the materials are first class, and there is no compromise of quality. Many artists are drawing inspiration from unmistakable British sights or design for their paintings. The Pope twins, Kate and Liz, whose unique partnership as successful artists, leads to a daring mix of medium and composition, are inspired by everyday scenes and symbols. From the familiar underground sign, to famous

London landmarks, including Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the instantly recognizable red London bus, their work reminds us of all things British. The Pope Twins’ interest in collage, combined with line and colour, results in a rich interplay of textures and form. With so many incredible examples of architecture in London, it’s easy to see why artists and photographers remain fascinated with our capital city, but in the last 6 months, images of famous landmarks have become ever increasingly popular at Advocate Gallery. Highly successful photographer, Craig Barker, has developed a unique perspective on London which is reflected in the powerful images he produces of iconic sights. His photograph of Big Ben and Westminster captures the essence of our city, with the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, mixing old and new, tradition and development.

In the current economic climate many people want to be reminded of their favourite things about Britain, not the doom and gloom we see on our televisions and in the media every day and art can do this. There is definitely an instant connection between this type of art work and the viewer, which provokes memories and conversation, which is priceless. Many of these British landmarks, emblems and designs will, or already have an important place in history, making these pieces not only highly collectable, but a worthwhile investment, so 2012 really is the year to fly the flag for Britain. his enterprising young British yacht broker has made it his mission to bring to yachting a whole new level of lifestyle detail. For Dubsky, it’s not simply a question of “take the commission and run”: instead, he puts his peerless contacts book to good use to make sure that you get whatever you need on your trip and before you even know you need it. It’s a sort of broker-meets-concierge service, though Dubsky is still searching for another term to describe what he does. “Concierge is a tricky word,” he muses. “We’re not offering it as a concierge company, we’re offering it as an addition to the yacht.” His company, Yacht Masters, charges no extra fees for the

service - which, beyond simply finding you the perfect superyacht, could range from securing gold dust-like tickets, such as Centre Court Finals Day at Wimbledon or a sold-out operatic premiere, to connecting you with a crack team of maritime security guards to protect your yacht as you sail through dangerous waters, or even just advising you on prep schools for your children. If you’re lucky, he might invite you shooting in the country, or fly you out to drive supercars in the Arctic Circle. It sounds like a risky business plan: lots of outlay, but where’s the return? Well, he says, his clients aren’t idiots: they know what it costs to charter that yacht.

BROKERAGE WITH A REAL DIFFERENCE

“Any broker can go and get the yachts, and many do, simply acting as booking agents, but we have gained good relationships with both owners and Captains and are very competent at negotiating on all deals, but there is always a limit. Every yacht is listed at the same price wherever you go.” So why are they coming to Yacht Masters rather than other brokers? “The only reason is going to be down to the level of service they get in the core product and the general level of service they get from dealing with us, and the privacy they get. People like that.” He must be doing something right: he's just opened his third office, in Monaco, a glamorous addition to his

existing presence in Britain (at a private, very discreet country estate) and, most recently, Montenegro. In fact, he is the ONLY superyacht broker to settle in the new marina at Porto Montenegro, the latest under-theradar playground for the A-list, all glorious vistas and retro chic. That’s no small achievement for a man still in his mid-30s. A combination of hard work, entrepreneurialism and, of course, fantastic connections has played in his favour but he says he will not hesitate to drop a connection should they be involved in something he deems “unethical or untrustworthy”. After all, his business relies upon trust and

friendship - his version of “social networking with likeminded people” is more likely to involve six or ten people on a driving trip on the Côte d’Azur than 500,000 followers on Twitter.

The same goes for establishing a team upon whom he can rely to work with the same dedication, resourcefulness and courtesy. “Finding staff is probably one of the toughest things in the industry,” he says. His people around the world are just as adept at understanding the technicalities of yachting as dealing with the lifestyle requirements both on board and off, and they are united by one

overriding concern: their clients’ happiness, whatever that takes. A lot of it comes down to good judgement, and that is something he has honed over more than a decade in the yacht business (not to mention a spell in the wine trade and another job selling supercars in Park Lane) - and it didn’t always come easily, he says. “When I first started in yachts, and I was 24, there was a 22-year-old client in Monaco who wanted to charter a 200ft yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix. He said he’d walked into the main Monaco yacht brokers and no one had taken him seriously. Well, I was brand new, and I was taking everybody seriously, so I went to see him. And I assumed that, as a guy who could spend that sort of money, he’d want a flash restaurant so I asked where he wanted to meet and he suggested Stars ’N’ Bars ... which is just a simple bar … and he said to me, “What do you want to drink?” I looked at him and thought, you’re 22, I’m 24, it’s lunchtime: “I’ll have a beer.” So the beer came and he ordered a cappuccino, and I remember thinking what a mistake I’d

made. I had just assumed he had been living life as a jetsetter, but of course he was a normal guy; he didn’t want a drink at lunchtime; he met at a bar because it was the easiest place to go to. And there aren’t many guys that we deal with who just want to show off. They’re just normal people.” Normal his clients might be, but sometimes a little showing off is exactly what they do want and, thanks to the flexibility and personal touch of a small company, rather than some huge credit-card concierge system, Dubsky can provide it - alongside as much discretion as you like. So while you might want a quiet romantic week on a yacht with nothing but sea for miles, when it’s time to pop the question, you can get that Champagne delivered just at the right moment - an experience one of his clients has enjoyed. “Someone proposed recently and we were able to drop the crate of Champagne using GPS-guided parachutes and co-ordinates from the yacht.” That’s the kind of normality you’d go back for again and again.

INTERNATIONALLYRENOWNED ARTIST

ANNA BOULTON we a sk wh at m a kes h er tick? Enticed by the oceans, Anna Boulton captures the thrill of racing in her paintings. A keen sailor from a young age, she has now finally got the chance to combine her love for art and sailing. Currently based in England, Anna is regularly commissioned by yacht owners to produce paintings of (and for the interiors of) their boats. How did you get involved with sailing? My early years were spent in the Middle East on the shores of the Arabian Gulf where I learnt to swim and surf almost as soon as I could walk. When I was eight years old, my parents bought me a little singlehanded sailing boat (a “Topper”) and by the time I was nine I was racing with the other expatriate children in and out of the harbour. Were your parents keen sailors? Yes, they both raced high-tech catamarans very successfully, competing in a number of international championships. Have you sailed competitively? I spent my teenage years living around Chichester Harbour where every summer I would race dinghies at Itchenor and Bosham Sailing Clubs and at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Do you still race? Yes, I was very fortunate to race on the classic yacht ‘Mariette’ at the Pendennis Cup in Falmouth recently. She is a 138 foot gaff schooner built in

Oil on Canvas - Maraquita v Cambria

1915.  I also raced on ‘Rebecca’,  a 139 foot German Frers ketch, in Antigua earlier this year. What encouraged you to paint and where did you learn? From an early age the warmth and stunning colours of the Arabian Gulf and the sight of the old sailing dhows sparked off a great affinity with the

sea. It was always clear to me that art was the direction I wanted to follow. I gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Falmouth College of Art and Design. What inspired you at university? During my degree course, I spent time at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Venice where I fell completely under the spell of Venice and, seeing the super yachts moored off the Piazza San Marco, I knew I had to be involved with boats and the sea again. Did you go back to Venice after you graduated? Yes, as soon as I completed my degree I returned there to do an internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Art Museum where I expanded my knowledge of early twentieth century art and spent much of my time photographing the architecture and canals of the city.

How did you become a professional painter? After Venice, I spent several years crewing on yachts around the world, but art was always in the back of my mind and, when I had saved enough money, I set up a studio in Queenstown, New Zealand, where I began painting in earnest, inspired by the fabulous scenery of the South Island. There I found a lucrative market in painting lakes and mountains for tourists and in producing portraits of local people’s dogs with an occasional farmer’s prize sheep! It was at this stage I found I could make a living purely by painting. My confidence grew and I was approached by various galleries wanting to display my work. Why did you leave Queenstown, New Zealand? After four years in Queenstown, even though I was inspired by the spectacular lakes and mountains of the South Island, I missed the sea and sailing, so I headed for Auckland in the North Island. When were you first commissioned to paint a ‘yacht portrait’? When I arrived in Auckland I caught up with the yachting fraternity again and it was whilst I was there that I received my first commission. From then on I followed the yachts from the Antipodes to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, moving with the seasons and painting yachts in some stunning locations. You’re extremely well travelled! Where are you currently based? I divide my time in the Summer months between Palma (Mallorca) and England, spending the Winter painting in Antigua where I have a studio. I know I've been lucky to have seen all the places I've visited over the years. At the end of September 2011 for instance I was in St. Tropez for the Classic Yacht Regatta photographing and crewing on the beautiful sailing yachts that race in the Mediterranean. I am putting together a body of work based on the photographs I took there.

Oil on Canvas - Ranger at the St Barth’s Bucket

where I presented one of my paintings as a prize. In January 2012 I had solo exhibitions in Antigua at both Harmony Hall and The Admirals Inn. Are you exhibiting your work anywhere this Summer? Yes, I am currently exhibiting my work at Kendall's Fine Art in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Your portraits are stunning. Do you experiment with different techniques in your paintings? I work predominantly in oil on canvas or wood and, for my abstract work, acrylic and mixed media, throwing in the odd piece of Kevlar sailcloth. In New Zealand I produced a number of paintings based on the America’s Cup yachts and was very happy to be given an old America’s Cup sail to incorporate into the work. In this series

I experimented with light reflecting paint to recreate the effect of light as it touches the sails and the sea. These paintings change dramatically as light hits the surface from different angles. I also like to try new techniques on canvas, such as adding and overlaying structures of the yachts. And what would you say your crucial aim is in your work? The sea remains a constant theme throughout my work and I aim, in particular, to portray the thrill and excitement of the race, with hulls smashing through the waves and spray flying across the canvas.

Anna Boulton E-mail: anna_b7@hotmail.com www.annaboulton.com

Have you exhibited your work? For the last two Winters I have based my studio in Antigua, West Indies, where I exhibited in the prestigious Jumby Bay Resort. I was also invited to be a sponsor for the Superyacht Regatta in the British Virgin Islands Anna Boulton working in Palma on an Oil on Canvas commission - Sojana

THE PRIVATE, PRIVATE BANK

T

HERE can be no fairer promise by a banker than to look after client money as if it were his own. Not a bad philosophy in a world where trust in banks has possibly never been lower. Of course ‘banking’ covers a huge spectrum of institutions and customer needs, but private banking should be, first and foremost, about preserving wealth. This is the philosophy of Banque Havilland, the Luxembourg based bank established in 2009 by seasoned investor and businessman David Rowland and his family, the Rowland family. Acquiring the healthy assets of the distressed Icelandic Bank Kaupthing in Luxembourg, the Rowlands set to work developing a new private bank along the lines of the sort of institution they would want to bank with – well capitalised, and with a robust balance sheet.

Chief Operating Officer Venetia Rowland, says: “This means a bank where you know that your money is safe. What you put in is the least you’ll get out. There has to be exceptional service and attention to detail. By placing family members in the management and the staff of the bank we hope that these values will be embedded in the culture. “ David Rowland has seven other children after Venetia, most of them involved in the bank. This is a real family business, supported by a team of professional private bankers led by CEO Jean-Francois Willems. The High Net Worth Individuals and families served by Banque Havilland in London, Luxembourg and Monaco face many challenges in keeping their wealth intact in tough economic times, let alone growing it. They operate in a market where the vast majority of ‘managed’ portfolios are underperforming. Risk is seen as Banque Havilland, Luxembourg

42 reside | EDITION 10

unavoidable and clients’ perceptions of banking relationships invariably start from a negative position. “We strongly believe that performance these days is about helping our clients to preserve wealth, and this idea of performance has different qualities to the way things were done before the banking crisis. It means being a trusted advisor to your client – delivering intelligent investment ideas that have been through the appropriate due diligence, risk management screenings, and that are relevant to that individual,” says Venetia, who began her career as a strategy consultant with Ernst & Young. For depositors actively looking for growth opportunities, there is often poor access to interesting, compelling investment ideas or the sort of ‘dealflow’ that clients with substantial funds to commit would want to see. Investment periods can also be inflexible or unrealistic. So it’s no wonder that the inactivity which has set in at large institutional investors such as pension funds and unit trusts has reached many Family Offices and wealthy individuals who might otherwise be enthusiastic investors. Jonathan Rowland, David Rowland’s eldest son, a successful entrepreneur in both private and public companies, adds: “Family ownership offers all sorts of possibilities, not just independence. We think there are likeminded people who would value having access to the family network and also being part of this ‘investment club’ idea we are developing for their own business and investment interests.” Jonathan, also a Director of the bank, is based at the bank’s Monaco office, which opened earlier this year with Monaco Finance Minister Marco Piccinini praising its conservative approach. The concept of a bank treating clients’ money as carefully as it were managing its own is not only key to the Rowland approach, but there is even a French legal expression for it: “Gestion en bon père de famille” – or the prudent management of the head of the family. Banque Havilland’s own “bon père” David Rowland, now Banque Havilland’s Honorary President, has experienced several economic cycles. He has built and navigated his family’s wealth through good times and bad, investing in many different sectors and tracking them closely. For almost 50 years he has been a prescient investor, calling time on booms before they have turned to bust. “Economic troubles worldwide have left financial markets in uncharted territory and we feel we can play an important role in helping our clients to navigate a safe route through to the other side,” says Jonathan.

Venetia Rowland, Chief Operating Officer

Rowland investments have taken the form of both direct and indirect stakes in businesses, either on their own behalf or in conjunction with select partners. Sharing these opportunities with the bank’s clients fosters a ‘club’ approach; access to a network of successful entrepreneurs and business leaders, in turn leading to greater scope for off-market investment in interesting situations. Hand-in-hand with this key difference of co-investment is a new attitude to risk: much more homework done on potential investments, coupled with best-in-class risk management systems. This new bank has new controls and a new approach to limiting downside – having started with a blank sheet of paper in the aftermath of the world’s worst banking crisis. If this sounds very different to the norm in traditional private banking, that is because it is genuinely a first. Wealth management in the UK, at any rate, remains fixated on pushing ready-made investment products. In reality, one size rarely fits all and too often these products involve high costs and relatively low (if any) returns. Equally, Banque Havilland the bank is not restricted by traditional boundaries of sector, geography or types of asset. It is able to use the most suitable financial instruments to give individual clients the appropriate market exposure for their needs. Solutions are tailormade in the true spirit of the bank’s Savile Row location in London. Combining an unconstrained investment style with a conservative approach to wealth preservation may seem a contradiction. But delivering new and interesting ideas to clients means continuously reviewing global themes, trends and asset classes. “We think that clients will appreciate the fact that we are small and privately owned. It means they can easily have access to the owners which you cannot necessarily have if you bank with one of the larger private banks. We are very open to meeting with our clients on a regular basis; we find these meetings are really useful as we can understand more about what our clients want or need and also share our

Banque Havilland, Monaco

thoughts on business and investment. We can even help them to develop their own businesses by providing access to our network and in some cases through coinvestment projects,” says Jonathan. Co-investment with Banque Havilland can mean private equity style opportunities such as stakes in start-up companies; pre-IPO involvement in growth businesses or turnaround situations; debt products such as senior ranking bonds or corporate loans are also part of the mix. Always front of mind, however, is the Rowland family’s strict vetting procedure and the fact that it is investing alongside its clients. At the other end of the equation, the bank is able to support companies owned by other families and entrepreneurs, sharing views on business strategy as well as helping with private placements, debt restructuring and M&A advice. Corporate finance from start to finish – putting deals together and giving corporate clients access to Banque Havilland’s own balance sheet.

2012 will see Banque Havilland’s offices in Luxembourg, London, and Monaco broadening their offer to High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth investors, looking particularly at Russia and China as specific markets which continue to grow domestic wealth at a cracking pace. Those assets will need preserving and it’s a theme that will continue to ring true back in the UK, where wealth management began for the Rowland family. Jonathan sums it up well : “As a family that has created its own wealth, we understand what it takes to build it and importantly what it takes to protect it. There is real life experience at play here and this is something we want to share with our clients. I don’t think there are many banks out there today who can do this. “In this day and age, for a family to own a bank is unique phenomenon, and we do not take this for granted. We are 100% committed to building a legacy for our family and the generations to come that we can all be proud of.” reside | EDITION 10 43

In the heart of London’s West End, away from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, St Christopher’s Place is home to one of the finest hidden gems in men’s fashion, Diverso.

F

ounded and led by two young English designers, James Reynolds and Darren Hampton, the Diverso label has become recognised for its elegant mix of British creativity and quality Italian craftsmanship. To create every collection the pair surround themselves with the finest pattern cutters and artisans in Italy and spend months channelling and perfecting their designs. The eagerlyawaited new Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection strictly follows this ethos and looks to be the brand’s most complete collection to date explains co-founder James Reynolds.

44 reside | EDITION 10

“For this latest Collection we’ve invested more time than ever behind the scenes in researching, sourcing trimmings and designing and creating our own exclusive fabrics to work with. Much in the same way our own customers discover our tuckedaway store, we spend time unearthing amazing small companies across Italy who have been weaving fabrics, crafting clothing and specialising within their industry for generations. These small companies form the quality foundations we build our creations on and the Autumn/ Winter Collection is no different.” “This season my personal favourites are the ‘Nastro’ and ‘Piping’ shirt styles and the Manica blazer” continues James. “The satin trim gently frames the collar and cuff on the ‘Piping’ style and I think it looks great with either a tie or bowtie. For the ‘Manica’ tailoring we sourced a double-faced Merino Wool fabric made up of two different

colours. By making this into an unlined blazer and reversing some of the detail, we have produced a really elegant and interesting blazer with contrast sleeve detailing.” Co-founder Darren Hampton explains the thoughts behind the creative process and how their collections are always eagerly anticipated by their loyal fan base. "I love the buzz created by a new collection and especially listening to the feedback from our customers who are always intrigued by what new concepts we have come up with. I think the Autumn/Winter Collection will be a great success, the subtle details and fabrics used are fantastic. We always try to mix classic with a twist - and the twists in this collection are quite exceptional.” “I’m most excited about the ‘Piping’ shirt and our new bow-ties made from 2 different silks” continues Darren. “As a whole I think this is a very strong collection with fine knitwear and polo shirts complementing the shirting and tailoring. All round there is a good mix of both product and style to tick a lot of boxes.”

As well as launching the Collection in their London store, the brand has added Selfridges and on-line giant Zalando as official stockists alongside the 15 stores around the UK currently selling the Diverso label. The Diverso Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection will be available in store and on-line from 1st August. For more info please check www.diversoonline.com or follow Diverso on Twitter and Facebook. STENOA & THE THAMES DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT An original Dunkirk Little Ship, Stenoa played her part in history once more as the celebrations which paid tribute to Her Majesty The Queen's lifetime of service brought the Thames to life on Sunday 3rd June 2012. © 2012 Diamond Jubilee

Words: Tim Dansie & Elizabeth Baxendale

The official start time of the Pageant was 14:40. The Royal Jubilee Bells with its floating belfry, the first of ten herald music barges, took its position as the lead vessel. Immediately behind came the man-powered section with 265 rowed vessels including the royal row-barge Gloriana, the flagship of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

At high tide during the afternoon of Sunday 3rd June 1,000 vessels comprised from every country in the Commonwealth mustered on the River Thames to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 glorious years on the throne. The largest public event of the Diamond Jubilee weekend and possibly the largest live public event ever held in London let alone on the Thames itself, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant brought the Thames to life, making it joyously full with boats, clanging bells, tooting horns and sounding whistles. The Pageant was a unique occasion to pay tribute to one of the most significant of British Monarchs. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the banks of the River Thames whilst many hundreds of millions more watched on television. Major broadcasters confirmed a global audience numbering in the billions.

The Spirit of Chartwell by Hampton Court Palace

Gloriana, an eye-catching 94 feet and decorated with gold leaf and ornate hand carvings, was a gift to Her Majesty The Queen from Lord Sterling, Life President of P&O Cruises. Commissioned by Lord Sterling in 2011, Mark Edwards, master-builder of Richmond Bridge Boathouses on Richmond Riverside, constructed Gloriana using sweet chestnut from Prince Charles’ Duchy of Cornwall estates and employing techniques dating back to the Anglo-Saxon boat-builders of the 4th century. This £1m vessel, which took 5 months to build, was powered on the day by 18 oarsmen and women including Sir Matthew Pinsent, Sir Steve Redgrave, Paralympic champions and disabled British Servicemen. The man-powered section ‘tossed oars’ in salute to The Queen as they passed her. Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Philip and other senior members of the Royal Family travelled up the Thames on the Royal Barge, the Spirit of Chartwell, a Thames cruiser loaned by entrepreneur Philip Morrell, a former Barnardo’s boy and owner of the Magna Carta Steamship Company. Elaborate gold gilt sculptures had been added, along with lavish red carpets, velvet drapes and two thrones beneath a canopy. Several Royal-themed floral displays on the Royal barge were made up of flowers from the Queen’s own gardens. As Pageant Master Adrian Evans had promised weeks before: ‘The Royal Barge must be a jewel - the most magnificent vessel in the flotilla. It has been designed so that The Queen and Prince Philip can be easily seen as they take centre stage on two thrones for these Diamond Jubilee celebrations.’ The rest of the flotilla, all motor-powered sections, formed up behind The Queen travelling at a speed of four knots. At 15:00 bells in churches along the river banks as well as up and down the country rang out in response to the Royal Jubilee Bells.

Inspired by our rich history and tradition of entertainment and theatre, the Pageant included up to 30,000 participants on the water with the flotilla itself over seven miles long. Including mustering, dispersal and the Avenue of Sail, the flotilla took in some 25 miles of the Thames. It passed under all 13 Central London river crossings from Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge, the total extent taking 75 minutes to pass any given point. Down river of London Bridge there was a gun salute. Alaska - Historic Vessels

Flotilla participants included Barges, Dunkirk Little Ships, Explore Vessels, Fireboats, Herald Music Barges, Historic Boats, Kayaks, Man-Powered Boats, Narrowboats, Passenger Boats, Recreational Motor Boats, the Royal Squadron, Service Boats, Working Boats and finally a simply spectacular Avenue of Sail. The Avenue of Sail, on the Wapping side of the Thames just below Tower Bridge and encompassing St. Katharine Docks, was for all those vessels with masts unable to pass under the bridges. Impressively lining the Thames fore and aft on each side, all vessels had their sails raised in salute as the flotilla passed. Vessels of all shapes and sizes were beautifully-dressed with streamers and Union Jacks, their crews turned out in their finest rigs. Flag-waving members of the public took their places on passenger boats mid-river.

In World War II Stenoa had rescued 51 soldiers from Dunkirk, carrying troops off the beach and out to the waiting destroyers. During the evacuation in the very thick of the bombing she was stranded on the sand for over four hours. She returned home safely on 3rd June 1940, 72 years to the day of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Every five years since 1970 Stenoa, as a member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships, makes the return crossing to Dunkirk as part of a convoy of some 50 Little Ships. Originally named the Cecil & Lilian Philpott, she was bought in 1969 at informal tender from the RNLI by Dr. Oliver Dansie as a ‘successful investment in family life’ and whose children (Sarah, Timothy, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Oliver and Anne, hence Stenoa) and grandchildren continue to enjoy her today, cruising the East and West Country coasts, English rivers, Dutch and French canals and the Channel Islands.

Stenoa, an original Dunkirk Little Ship

Ten herald music barges with individual repertoires were interspersed throughout the length of the flotilla; from the Royal Jubilee Bells pealing from their floating belfry to the Academy of Ancient Music playing Handel’s Water Music and Music for Royal Fireworks. Eleven of the UK’s foremost composers had been commissioned to write short pieces ‘The New Water Music‘for the Pageant inspired by Handel’s Water Music. The London Philharmonic Orchestra played pieces relevant to the buildings being passed en route - James Bond themes passing the MI6 building and the march from the 1955 film The Dambusters when passing the RAF Memorial. Having led the flotilla down the Thames, once through Tower Bridge The Queen on the Spirit of Chartwell moored-up at the Royal Naval Research base, HMS President. Sitting on her throne Her Majesty The Queen then observed the entire flotilla as it passed, the bascules of Tower Bridge remaining open in salute for the remainder of the Pageant. Taking part in the Avenue of Sail was Stenoa, a former Newhaven lifeboat (1929-1965) credited with saving 148 lives and one of the original Dunkirk Little Ships.

Fourteen members of the Dansie family were on board Stenoa on Sunday 3rd June including 83-year-old Dr. Oliver Dansie. The vessel was fully rigged with her tan and cream sails aloft and dressed overall with a full suit of code flags. And so Stenoa marked another historic occasion as her ensign was proudly dipped in salute to Her Majesty The Queen during the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. From her mooring on the famed Walton Backwaters Stenoa had begun her journey across the Thames estuary on Wednesday 30th May, heading up the river on Thursday 31st and thereafter remaining moored and in position until after the Pageant. This was neither unfamiliar duty nor territory for Stenoa. On 9th June 1977 in celebration of The Queen's Silver Jubilee Stenoa was one of a flotilla of Dunkirk Little Ships escorting Britannia from Greenwich to Lambeth during the Queen's River Progress. The Pageant was brought to a close with a fitting finale at around 17:30 as the last vessel in the flotilla, the final floating herald music barge the Symphony, carrying members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir, floated between the historic boats in the Avenue of Sail and passed under Tower Bridge playing the most rousing of patriotic music. The Walton Backwaters lie beyond Colchester at the outermost end of the county between the Colne and Stour estuaries where the rolling cornfields of the Tendring Peninsula slide into the North Sea. This was the setting for Secret Water, the Thirties children's classic written by Arthur Ransome of Swallows and Amazons fame. Little has changed since and today its 7,000 acres of mudflats, salt marsh and glittering creeks are preserved as the Hamford Water National Nature Reserve. It was to the idyllic Walton Backwaters that the proud Dansie family and Stenoa made their way home on Monday 4th June, this great girl’s part in making history having been played once more.

BUYING PROPERTY IN THE UK It is well known that buying residential property in the UK can be a very stressful experience! Whether the acquisition is being made for a family home or a financial investment, the process can be long and drawn-out and tempers can get frayed.

W

ith property prices having risen exponentially over the last generation, the stresses are compounded by the sheer values involved. For these reasons, it is essential that first class legal advice is taken and that buyers instruct lawyers who can navigate them smoothly through the choppy waters of the UK real estate market. The top end of London's residential property market has proven to be surprisingly resilient in the face of the recent worldwide economic downturn. Not only are British property owners looking at high value residential investments in London as being a prudent investment but the eyes of the world's investors are also turning to London as a haven in troubled times and a good place to "park" funds and play the currency markets. For these reasons, buying residential property is an increasingly competitive business and expert advice is a prerequisite to success. Forsters is a highly respected Mayfair law firm specialising in all aspects of property work. We pride ourselves on being able to offer a full service practice so that every angle of your property investment is considered and protected. Our team’s experience covers all of the property, tax and trust issues relating to the acquisition, development, management and sale of residential property. In particular, our services include: 앫 Residential conveyancing for private clients buying or selling substantial individual properties. 앫 Handling conveyancing on multiple properties in new-build developments and specialising in off-plan acquisitions. 앫 The acquisition of residential property portfolios. 앫 Highly technical enfranchisement claims where we act both for individual lessees and groups making individual or group claims. This is a noted area of our practice, for which we won London Solicitors of the Year in The Enfranchisement and Right to Manage Awards 2011. We act for individual lessees on house and flat enfranchisement claims and collectively on block applications. 앫 Advising residential management companies and large Estates. 앫 Landlord and Tenant issues including high value residential tenancies for both long and short terms. 앫 Planning and construction advice. This is imperative in the London market where the desire to make profits has resulted in significant alterations being made to many properties, frequently without the necessary permissions and licences. It is essential that buyers know exactly what they are taking on. 앫 Private roadways and general access rights. These are critical and often over-looked by badly advised buyers. 앫 Property Listings and Grades which impact heavily on a buyer's ability to alter a property in the future. 앫 Estate management. We advise one of the major London estates on all aspects of its residential property portfolio and other smaller Estates and rural estates on all aspects of their property interests. Our residential conveyancers work closely with our Private Client colleagues where our main areas of practice encompass: 앫 Estate and inheritance tax planning, including advice on offshore structures 54 reside | EDITION 10

앫 Wealth protection 앫 Formation and administration of trusts 앫 Wills and probate 앫 Advising non-UK residents and non-domiciled UK residents on offshore tax planning 앫 Management and preservation of landed estates 앫 Safeguarding heritage property for the families who own it 앫 Family law, including divorce and separation 앫 Charitable trusts, companies and fund raising

Other Issues: In the current market it is vital that both buyers and sellers can move quickly. Onerous deadlines and same-day exchanges are commonplace in a market where financing is tough and investors are looking for certainty as quickly as possible. Clients need professionals who are attuned to the market and highly regarded within the property world so that transactions hit the ground running and all parties can feel confident that matters will be dealt with expeditiously. We have close connections with many of the leading firms of surveyors and valuers within the wider conveyancing market and also within niche areas such as enfranchisement valuation which means that the teams you appoint to advise you are used to working together successfully.

Tax and Structuring: This is a vitally important aspect of any property acquisition. In terms of UK tax liabilities, buyers should be aware of four major property taxes in the UK as follows:

앫 Inheritance Tax UK inheritance tax (IHT) will be relevant for all personally owned properties in the UK. If you are domiciled in the UK, the net value of your worldwide estate will be subject to IHT. If you are not domiciled in the UK, your assets will still be subject to IHT to the extent that they are situated in the UK. A trust that directly holds UK property will also have potential IHT charges and advice should be taken on such a structure. The applicable rate of IHT on death is currently 40% on the value of your estate over £325,000 (this value is frozen until 5 April 2015). IHT may also be chargeable on lifetime transfers of property. Gifts between spouses are usually free of IHT. If you own property in the UK personally, it is highly recommended to make a UK will. Non-UK domiciled persons need to carefully consider their IHT position, looking carefully at their wills and also their debt and insurance arrangements.

앫 Capital Gains Tax Capital gains tax (CGT) will apply upon a disposal of UK property (including a gift) if you are resident in the UK at any time during the tax year of the disposal. If you cease to be resident in the UK, there are certain circumstances when you may still be liable for CGT on a gain that accrues

following your departure, eg. where you return to reside in the UK within 5 tax years of leaving. When a capital gain accrues, CGT will be chargeable on that gain at a rate of 28% for higher rate tax payers. However, as an individual, the first £10,600 of gains you receive in each tax year is usually free of tax. On the sale of a property which is your only or main residence worldwide a full CGT exemption can generally be claimed.

앫 Income Tax If you generate income by letting the property, you will be liable to income tax on the net income received. This tax will apply irrespective of your residence or domicile. The applicable rate will depend on the total amount of taxable income you receive in that tax year. The basic rate of 20% currently applies for income up to £34,370, with the 40% higher rate applying up to a limit of £150,000 and the additional rate of 50% applying to any further income. You may be able to deduct the annual personal allowance of £8,105. You may also be able to limit the rate of tax to 20% if you are non-UK resident.

앫 Stamp Duty Land Tax Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) may be payable upon the purchase of a property. The value of the property will determine whether this tax applies. Following the changes announced in the 2012 Budget, the rates and thresholds are:

앫 Ownership through offshore structures Offshore structures may have had advantages for non-UK residents and non-UK domiciled individuals but, since the 2012 Budget, this may no longer be the case, see more details below. Further details are expected later this year so it is particularly important at the moment to take advice before acquiring a property through a structure. Also existing structures should be reviewed in the light of the proposed changes as to whether a restructuring is required before the new rules come in to force in April 2013.

Upcoming Tax Changes? Following the recent Budget announcements, the UK Government is consulting on proposals to extend capital gains tax to gains realised by non-resident non-natural persons on disposals of UK residential property for more than £2 million, to take effect from 6 April 2013. The Government is also consulting on the introduction of an annual charge on properties valued at over £2 million owned by non-natural persons to take effect from 6 April 2013. Measures may also be introduced to make it clear that a wide range of SDLT avoidance schemes can be investigated and ruled ineffective by the Revenue.

A rate of 15% will apply to the acquisition of residential property by ‘non-natural persons’. Non-natural persons include companies, collective investment schemes (such as unit trusts) and partnerships which have at least one company as a partner. Trusts are not considered ‘non-natural persons’. Offshore investors should also be aware of residency and domicile issues which can have a significant impact on their acquisition.

앫 UK residence and domicile Whether you will be treated as UK resident will depend primarily on the number of days you spend in the UK in each tax year (6 April - 5 April). A statutory residence test is due to be introduced with effect from April 2013, under which there will be greater clarity as to whether you are resident or non-resident in the UK in a tax year. In addition to day counting, a number of other factors will be taken into account in assessing residence if you spend fewer than 183 days in the UK. These include ownership of property, employment, and whether members of your immediate family are UK resident. The rules that determine domicile are complex. Generally someone domiciled in the UK will have the permanent or indefinite intention to remain in the UK. You will also be deemed to be domiciled in the UK for IHT purposes if you have been living in the UK for at least 17 out of the previous 20 tax years.

This terrace designed by Bartholomew Landscaping belongs to a property on Rutland Gardens, currently being marketed for sale through Beauchamp Estates for £14.95million.

NATURE PERFECTED Barry Burrows, Managing Director of garden design consultancy Bartholomew Landscaping, gives the low-down on the private oases being created in London’s highest spaces.

T

here’s no doubt urban dwellers get a raw deal when it comes to private outside space. In London, people are increasingly looking for innovative ways to maximise the space they have access to within their own property. But as gardens are at a premium, and the possibility of expanding outwards is so severely limited in the capital, it is the appeal of the roof terrace, big or small, that is really on the up. Whilst some terraces may simply consist of limited roof top areas just big enough to keep a few pots and

grow some home produce, others may be expansive exterior ‘rooms’ boasting every conceivable luxury. The latest trend in high-end property is to create areas that blur the boundaries between outside and in, by extending luxurious interiors outside. So many features that we normally associate with the inside of our houses are finding their way outside into the garden. Canopies, heating, entertainment media, and even kitchens and bar areas are appearing on rooftops all over London.

Roof gardens such as this one in Pimlico, get the best of the sun and the city views.

58 reside | EDITION 10

We recently completed such a project in Knightsbridge that needed to reflect the high quality and build of the newly built house, and provide an area that could be used in all weathers. Our final design included a fireplace, a plasma TV and outdoor heaters, as well as a fully controllable lighting system to create varying moods throughout the garden. An electrically operated overhead canopy was installed to cover the whole area, transforming the space into another room that offered complete privacy. Whilst budgets for roof terraces vary wildly, costing anything from £5,000 up to £250,000+, they are often far from a simple solution to gaining outside space. They can be extremely complex to build and maintain, and from a design point of view, require very different principles in order to create attractive and appealing space which will stand the test of time. There are some vital considerations when choosing to embark on the creation of a rooftop garden. To begin with, roof terraces usually require planning permission from the local authority as they tend to overlook nearby homes. They can be subject to party wall agreements or may not be permitted at all on leasehold properties or those within Conservation Areas. An experienced contractor can help you seek the right

Clever lighting and planting makes the most of void space at this expansive Chelsea home.

advice on this, and can also assess the suitability of the roof in terms of strength and waterproofing, and solve issues of access to and from the space during construction and beyond. As space is naturally limited on roof terraces, the key is to consider how that space can be maximised. Lighting is a fantastic tool. Not only can it play an enormous part in creating the desired mood and atmosphere, whilst extending the usable time that can be spent outside, it also creates the illusion of space by careful positioning and the use of features such as water

and mirrors. Similarly, an adventurous trompe l’oeil can totally change the character of the space - a ‘trick of the eye’ painting, a 3D image through the wall or maybe a transparent floor in a balcony can work miracles. Another increasingly fashionable ‘trick’ in roof terrace design is the installation of green walls. These make the greatest use of space by providing a vertical growing area that does not take up floor space. From an aesthetic point of view they provide texture, soften the space, and give a sense of depth and perspective often absent

on roof terraces. They can be planted for decorative effect, but can also produce a remarkable amount of fresh produce for home consumption. Vertically established planting also provides protection from the elements and acts as a barrier to wind. Most are available with integral watering systems, so upkeep is minimal. One thing you can bank on in London is the unreliability of the weather. As such, covering for a roof terrace is essential if you want to be able to use it year-round. Retractable awnings are the solution, providing shade from sun in the summer, and protection from the elements in the colder seasons and on chilly evenings. They also help to maintain the illusion of the outside ‘room’ and can transform the space into a perfect area for entertaining, day and night. Of course furniture is an integral part of a roof terrace and must be chosen wisely. Considering exactly how the terrace will be used – will it be be a dining space, a place to catch the sun, or an additional lounge area? – will help determine the type of furniture needed. The style of your garden furniture is also critical to complement the interior style of your home so that the join between outside and inside space is seamless. Generally wood gives a more classic look, with aluminium designs erring towards a contemporary feel, but there is so much variety in furniture design these days that there should be something for everyone’s style. Choosing garden furniture that matches the interior style, but is also practical, comfortable and easy to maintain, is really the key to getting the most of outdoor space. Size matters too. You don’t want to clutter your roof garden with furniture at the expense of everything else. Roof terraces are stressed environments for plants. Generally, they have more extreme microclimates, hotter summers and cold and windy winters, so plants need to be durable. Bedding and annuals can provide a sumptuous show for the summer, whilst tough but architectural planting maintains structure throughout the winter. Box plants are good for formality, and for flower and seasonality, Agapanthus, Hemerocallis, Lavender and Sedum work wonders. reside | EDITION 10 59

Grasses are well suited to being tolerant of windy conditions, and can provide shelter for other plants. Olive trees can be good, but be aware that bamboo, which is very popular on terraces, will only flourish if well watered, something which needs careful attention in these conditions. Long-term maintenance is essential for terraces. An irrigation system should always be considered in the early planning stages, and timber must be sanded and oiled biannually as it can age quickly. We often find that many people enjoy the privacy provided by these elevated spaces much more so than conventional gardens, which can be overlooked by neighbouring properties. Nor do they suffer from shade cast by overhanging trees, therefore offering longer days of sunshine during the summer months. The highest terraces have beautiful far-reaching views over the city, which can be maximised by careful design. What’s more, estate agents agree that a well-designed roof terrace can add a significant amount to the value and the saleability of a property, in some cases upwards of £100,000 for a substantial usable area. So, if one has the space and the means to create one, a roof terrace can be a lucrative, desirable and usable addition to the home. bartholomewlandscaping 59 Warwick Way London SW1V 1QR T 020 7931 8685 E gardens@bartholomewlandscaping.com Wwww.bartholomewlandscaping.com

THE SPA GARDEN ... ... by NIRVANA SPA Elizabeth Baxendale rediscovers her Nirvana and indulges in a spot of pure Summer escapism enjoying the ultimate in outside relaxation at Nirvana Spa’s beautiful new Spa Garden. And it wasn’t raining!

irvana Spa, a simply magical retreat with award-winning facilities, far removed from the stresses of the world and tucked away in the peaceful rural area of Wokingham in Berkshire. Firmly established as the leading health, fitness and day spa facility in the country, a visit leaves you with a feelgood factor like no other, whichever of the facilities on offer you choose to enjoy or your reasons for visiting. Invited to relax, refresh and restore myself for a day in the tranquil yet stunning new Spa Garden at Nirvana Spa, how could a girl refuse? That all too rare LizzieB pamper moment in sight I was soon heading away from London and down the M4. Spa members I found with some envy can now experience the very best in outdoor rest and relaxation with the Club’s latest investment, the Spa Garden, a superb landscaped outdoor area adjacent to the Roman Room. This most impressive of new developments incorporates a refreshing and generously-sized 6 x 12m outdoor heated pool, four mini spa pools heated to 35ºC to ease those aching muscles and over 100 comfortable loungers enabling you to soak up that Summer sun when it shines. And it shone for me so I did! As I have come to expect of my Nirvana, the Club has covered every base. There was no need to move myself inside and away from the sun (honest!) whenever I started to feel thirsty or even that little bit peckish during the day. A delightful al fresco

dining area has been designed which allowed me to enjoy the same deliciously mouth-watering menu choices and variety of smoothies and hot and cold drinks as I had found on my previous visit to the Spa’s Garden Café. Made from the freshest of ingredients and ranging from light healthy snacks and salads to à la carte spa cuisine and some particularly naughty-looking yet highly tempting desserts decisions were difficult ones but I managed. The outdoor bar serving refreshments all day, the welldeserved chill-out time can be endless. You can treat yourself to a glass of bubbly or select from the wide range of smoothies, fruit juices, teas and coffees always on offer.

The new outdoor relaxation pool is heated to a constant 30ºC and features the same ultraviolet light technology as all the other Nirvana Spa pools, keeping the water sparkling and sanitised whilst dramatically reducing the amount of chlorine added to the water. The Club has created with apparent ease the same uniquely relaxing environment outside as has always been found inside at the Spa. No detail left unattended to, the Spa Garden includes discreet showers and toilet facilities with full disabled access. And if you forget your sunscreen, recommended even on the cloudiest of days, then the Spa Shop is on hand offering a full range of sunscreen and skincare products. The normal seasonal period of opening for the Spa Garden will be from April through to September, weather dependent of course! Nirvana Spa provides a wonderful luxurious environment and it is available for everyone to enjoy. For a few precious hours my cares and worries passed me by as I relaxed and rediscovered my Nirvana. So when will you find yours...?

verseas interest in the prime London housing market continues unabated as we roll into summer. Russian and Indian buyers continue to dominate the top end of the market followed by buyers from Europe and the Middle East all looking for homes and investment properties within the capital. Whilst a still relatively weak Sterling continues to attract overseas money into London, we do not believe that this is the main driver for investment. With continued uncertainty within the global economy, many are seeing the London property market as a ‘bank’; a secure place to park wealth in a tangible and usable asset. As well as the perceived financial security offered by prime London property, the attraction of capital growth continues to bring in new investors, as

104 reside | EDITION 10

well as those who are looking to add to an existing London portfolio. Over the past year, Prime Central London has again outperformed both the UK and London benchmarks, with prime postcodes seeing growth of 12.5% in 2011. The most sought after areas were the best performers with Knightsbridge and Mayfair recording growth of 31% and 17% respectively over the course of the year as competition for the best properties intensified. Buyers within our market are looking to acquire the best properties, preferring turn-key newly renovated homes, with few having the time or inclination to renovate or modernise properties. This is true for both investment and owner occupation. With overseas money continuing to dominate the market over £10 million, the type of property buyers are looking for has also changed. Many buyers are demanding the facilities, security and levels of specification offered by new developments such as One Hyde Park and The Lancasters. These schemes have broken all price records within their local markets by offering facilities and coveted lateral living spaces which are difficult to find within period homes. UK-wide development of new homes remains challenging, with a significant reduction in new schemes under construction. Many developers, facing difficult market conditions outside the capital, have concentrated their efforts on the more buoyant London market. The results of the latest Crane Survey

reported an increase of 40% in homes under construction in London in 2011. However, sites within the prime boroughs remain scarce, with only three schemes over 50 units currently under construction across the whole of Kensington & Chelsea and a further four in the City of Westminster. Whilst overseas money dominates the very top end of the market, domestic purchasers are more prolific in the market below £5 million, many of whom work within London’s financial sector. The South Kensington and Chelsea markets between £2 million and £5 million remain strong with a combination of domestic and overseas buyers. Traditionally, bonus money has fed its way into the prime London market, with the size of the bonus pot affecting demand and subsequently price growth across prime London. The latest figures from the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) suggested that bonus money will be 38% lower for the latest financial year 2011/2012 (just over a third of the peak in 2007/08). The next financial year is expected to remain flat with peak levels unlikely to return until after 2016.

FAMILY TRADITIONS W

illiam A. Brayer first started making bespoke furniture in 1912 from his workshops in Shoreditch. His speciality at the time was making bowed fronted dresser cabinets. Today, 100 years later, his great grandson is continuing the family tradition from their workshop and showroom in Surbiton, Surrey, but now the emphasis is on bespoke kitchens and built-in furniture.

William’s great grandson, Barry, has many years specialising in bespoke furniture. Barry continues ‘We pride ourselves on paying meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of our work. Our team of experts are committed to producing creative, thoughtful designs, tailored specifically to suit your lifestyle and individual needs’. Bill Brayer Design has also caught the attention of renowned interior

designer Kelly Hoppen and was featured in Kelly’s recent interiors programme ‘Superior Interiors’. Design is a very important part of the process of attaining the right furniture for your requirements and style. In order to get the perfect finished result they offer advice on every aspect of design; from the style and colour of furniture, to the materials and finishes used. They also recommend suitable appliances, flooring (including under floor heating), lighting schemes and audiovisual equipment. They are happy to work closely with your own builders on a scheme or, if you would prefer, can oversee the project in its entirety, using their own experienced contractors. Once you have agreed the ideal design, your furniture will be built to exacting standards by Bill Brayer Design’s dedicated cabinet-makers, combining the best of modern and traditional techniques with top quality materials. LITTLE BRITAIN GOES SILVER Little Britain Challenge Cup, 6th - 9th September 2012, Cowes, Isle of Wight

T

he 2012 Little Britain Challenge Cup www.littlebritain.co.uk, running from Thursday 6th until Sunday 9th September, will be celebrating its 25th Silver Anniversary. Taking place in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the construction industry’s action-packed three-day sailing regatta will be attracting a large cross-section of organisations and individuals who are involved in the building world. The LBCC is the biggest annual UK gathering of senior construction and property industry figureheads. It was back in 1988 that keen sailor and architect Peter Thompson, along with co-consultants Steve Green and Phil Davies, created the first Little Britain Challenge; so named as at the time they were all consultants for the Little Britain Office Development on London Wall. The three men with respective crews completed a single race in the Solent with the winners’ prize being the price of dinner. Tony Poole of Sheppard Robson, 2012 LBCC Chairman, comments: “Since such modest beginnings, the Little Britain, despite several recessions, has grown into the major sporting event for our industry, added to which, due to the generosity of our supporters, the regatta has generated to date a substantial £1.25m for some deserving charities.” After last year’s event, the LBCC raised £37,000 to share amongst their designated charities. John Derbyshire OBE, Royal Yachting Association’s Racing Manager for the Skandia Team GBR Paralympic Sailing Team, one of the main beneficiaries, commented: “Little Britain’s continuous support and interest in our Paralympic sailors has helped enormously over the last few

years. The Paralympics take place in September, where hopefully our talented team of sailors will inspire others to take up the sport and be the best they can.” Today over 100 boats compete in the Solent and, with racing organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron, make this the ultimate networking and team-building event. After racing each day, the crews, their guests and spectators are entertained with pontoon parties, dinner and live entertainment running through until the early hours. Entrants can choose between 1, 2 and 3-day packages in order to ensure that the maximum number of sailors have the opportunity to compete and join in the celebrations in this historic year. The weekend will build to a climax with the glamorous Gala Dinner where winners are announced and step up to take home a cherished Silver Anniversary LBCC trophy.

RED BOOK RedBook Agency is the first agency set up to help clients identify the ideal architect or landscape designer for their projects using the Agency’s unrivalled industry knowledge and personal expertise. Taking its name from the celebrated ‘Red Books’ made by Humphry Repton, one of the most significant figures in the history of English taste, RedBook Agency is a groundbreaking new service that helps clients find and select the ideal architect and landscape designer for

their project from among the brightest talents in Britain. British architects and landscape designers enjoy a hard-earned reputation as world leaders, yet prospective clients often find the right practice hard to identify. No wonder: Britain has 33,000 architects and no

limit to the numbers calling themselves landscape-designers. What is more, some of the finest practitioners prefer not to advertise or even have a website. RedBook Agency will offer clients: 앫 A choice of outstanding practices working across the entire spectrum of styles 앫 Tailored match-making with the ideal practice 앫 Friendly advice on the whole commissioning - and building process 앫 In-depth knowledge of practices and unrivalled expertise in architecture and landscape design The benefits to clients include: 앫 Saving time and research effort 앫 Absolute confidence in their final choice of creative partner 앫 Maximising the aesthetic and financial value of the project 앫 Minimising risks of any upset during the building phase 앫 Greater enjoyment of the commissioning process 앫 No cost beyond the normal fees charged by the practices Sandy Mitchell, founder and director of RedBook Agency and a former editor of Country Life and the Sunday Telegraph Review section, was inspired by Repton’s design and creation of legacy architecture. his proposals to clients in the form of red morocco-bound volumes that became known as his ‘Red Books’, many of which survive today. Prospective clients looking for a creative partner often have to rely on word of mouth which can be a slow process, yielding only one or two names. And who can be sure whether an architect or landscape designer recommended informally will provide the best possible match of vision, personality or budget? By using RedBook, clients receive tailored, independent advice on a wide range of the very best practices so that they can then make an informed selection of architect or landscape designer with complete confidence that they are realising the full aesthetic and financial potential of their project, whether it’s their first or fifth. In practice, this means that all prospective clients will be interviewed by RedBook’s team in person at the outset to assess their needs and

commitment - and to form an initial view as to the most appropriate match. The RedBook team members will then liaise with practices - giving them a brief on the client’s project - to ensure the client and the project truly appeals. Only then is the client put in touch with the practice. Of course, neither the client nor the practice is under any obligation to accept a particular introduction from the Agency. RedBook will represent up to 30 of the UK’s finest architecture practices whilst the landscape design practices will be limited to 15. The practices represented by RedBook cover the spectrum - from designing visionary contemporary buildings to restoring historic houses, from creating cutting-edge landscapes to traditional town or country gardens - and they include the most experienced practitioners as well as brilliant young ‘stars of tomorrow’. The practices work in every corner of Britain and vary greatly in size of

practice just as they do in their fees. Yet all these practices share two qualities: exceptional talent and the highest degree of peer-respect. To ensure that this exclusive ‘club’ retains its exacting membership standards, RedBook relies upon a top flight advisory panel to select practices of the right calibre. The panel includes Clive Aslet, an expert on British architecture; Jeremy Musson, the architectural historian; Dominic Bradbury, architecture and design commentator; Sir Roy Strong, the design expert and well-known garden journalist Stephen Anderton. Clients will pay only a small registration fee up-front. RedBook’s revenue is earned from the practices represented, who trust the agency to introduce clients they will enjoy working with. There are no joining fees or other up-front expenses for practices represented by RedBook. RedBook aspires to help clients and the architects and landscape designers it represents - leave their own mark on the nation for future generations to enjoy and admire. Building or remodelling an apartment or house – or creating a garden – is a glorious opportunity that for many people comes along once in a lifetime. RedBook believes in doing everything possible to help clients make the most of that opportunity, and their investment in the project, whether it is in London, the country or abroad.

WE STILL HAVE THE In 2011, after ten years in business and an excellent reputation already established in Surrey, independent estate agency Gascoigne Billinghurst decided the time was right to rebrand their business, strengthening and developing their identity and distinguishing them from their competitors. Retaining the all important wonky ‘G’ was essential for the business, as it formed a link with their existing identity and was familiar in the local area, so after much consideration Gascoigne Billinghurst became Grosvenor Billinghurst.

I

an Davies, Managing Director, is thrilled with the changes, “The rebrand has given the agency a real boost, not only in terms of visibility and image, but now our great sales and letting performance and friendly staff don’t get confused with anyone else.”

124 reside | EDITION 10

New name, new look The distinctive new name and branding achieve the right balance between traditional and modern. ‘Grosvenor’ brings a classic identity to the estate agency, with the bold new colour palette of black, lime and grey adding a fresh,

contemporary feel. “Maintaining our trademark wonky ‘G’ was crucial, as it’s instantly recognisable, especially on our sales and lettings boards” says Davies. “It’s what our customers often comment that they notice when they’re driving down a street. By using a crisp, fresh, lime green we’ve injected new life into it, so hopefully it will stand out even more!” The champagne and canapés flowed at launch receptions across their Surrey branches, as over one hundred local businesses and clients celebrated the rebrand, there were even cupcakes for those with a sweet tooth! Guests included local MP, Dominic Rabb, luxury new home developers, including Octagon Homes, established Surrey businesses Moore By Design Kitchens and Advocate Gallery and past and present clients. “The evenings were a great success and we received a very positive response from our guests. With our fresh new image and unique branding, I’m looking forward to our future as Grosvenor Billinghurst,” say Ian Davies.

FACTOR! Expanding into Esher But the eventful year didn’t stop there, with branches already in Cobham, Claygate, Hinchley Wood and Woking, Grosvenor Billinghurst increased their business with the acquisition of an Esher office. Esher was a natural progression for growth and had already proved successful for the company “Our neighbouring offices had already been selling houses in this area, so it made perfect sense to acquire the office and sell and let properties from its prominent location in Esher High Street, just along from the landmark “Odeon” cinema” says Davies.

Success in Surrey Grosvenor Billinghurst has enjoyed great success and prominence in Surrey, since its conception in 2002, so what is it about this agency that sets it apart from its competitors? “It sounds simple but it’s about putting the client first, listening to their needs and matching them to their perfect property. As specialists in residential sales and lettings, we have built excellent relationships with the local community and formed close associations with professionals including, landlords, developers and search agents, this enables us to offer the best possible properties and service to our clients,” says Ian Davies.

MD Ian Davies with senior colleagues

fantastic transport links to London and both international airports, the area definitely has international appeal. So with their dynamic new image, expansion into Esher and extensive market knowledge,

both here and abroad, Grosvenor Billinghurst stand out as a driven, and forward thinking company. So, if you’re looking to move to the lush delights and convenience of Surrey, be sure to look out for the ‘wonky G’!

International Connections But it doesn’t just stop at Surrey, “We have a network of international connections and I have personally been out to visit clients face to face in Moscow, Kiev (Ukraine) and Cyprus,” says Davies. “Russian buyers have been a growing phenomenon of the last decade too, so much so that we have added a Russian section to our web site.” Understandably, Surrey attracts top end buyers from all over the world. With the ACS International School in Cobham and an outstanding range of homes in private settings, combined with the countryside and

This permanent leave to remain could be speeded up if £5 million or £10 million is invested, rather than £1 million. A UK “non dom” can elect to be taxed using the remittance basis of taxation. This means that he will only have to pay tax on his UK source income and UK source capital gains. He will only pay tax on non UK income and gains in so far as they are remitted to the UK. We can provide advice as to how to hold and organise non UK wealth so that only non taxable money is remitted to the

UK. This means that an individual will only pay tax on the income from the £1 million that he has invested for his Tier 1 Investment Visa. Once an individual has been in the UK for seven years he will need to pay a remittance basis charge in each year that the remittance basis is used. However, the good news is that, with the use of trusts, we will be able to organise matters in such a way that he only needs to use the remittance basis every three or four years. He will therefore only need to pay the remittance basis charge in the years that he uses the remittance basis of taxation. Living in the UK involves use or ownership of a property, and the British Chancellor recently surprised us all with the introduction of 7%

stamp duty land tax for residential property over £2 million. This came into effect on 21 March 2012. At the same time a new 15% rate for residential properties valued over £2 million, owned by non natural persons, was introduced. Fortunately neither measure is retrospective. Properties already owned by companies and trusts are therefore not subject to stamp duty land tax until they are re-sold. There are also two additional, rather concerning, proposals on which the Government is to consult.

The first is a consultation on how to introduce an ‘annual charge’ on residential property valued at over £2 million owned by companies and trusts. The British Government consults on a number of measures that it never implements and I think that this may be one of them. The second is the proposed extension of capital gains tax to disposals of UK residential property by non resident, non natural, persons, i.e. offshore companies and trusts. If you are UK resident, hold the property in your own name and it is your principal private residence, you will not suffer any capital gains tax, under current legislation, when you dispose of the property. Properties held by non-resident individuals will also continue to generally not be subject to capital gains tax. UK non doms who already hold property through offshore structures should not, I suggest, rush into a hurried restructure, but wait to see what is in the consultation papers, which are expected in the summer. Many will choose to hold the property personally to avoid the 15% stamp duty. Planning will therefore be necessary to mitigate the effects of inheritance tax. A number of measures might be appropriate, depending on individual circumstances, including: 앫 Borrowing against the property so that your UK estate is kept to a lower level. 앫 The use of insurance policies.

앫 Making use of the inter-spouse exemption where appropriate. 앫 Holding the property more widely within the family. Every situation is different and it is of great importance that the correct individual professional advice is taken.

... supporting Striking celebrity portraits were among dozens taken by top fashion and beauty photographer Chris Craymer to be auctioned on Thursday 12th April with all proceeds going to Kids Company, the charity founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996 to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable Inner City children.

A

pril 2012 saw the launch of a portrait portfolio, In London, by prolific photographer Chris Craymer, featuring over 120 portraits of London-based people, some famous, some not. The book is an intriguing melange of people whose portraits somehow capture the spirit and essence of this exciting capital city in a year that puts London firmly centre stage. As Chris puts it, “Every city creates a certain style of person in a way, by attracting all sorts of different people.” Despite achieving great success as a commercial and editorial photographer, Chris has constantly created his own work for personal projects, delivering images that feel spontaneous, intimate, charming and above all alive. In London began with a shoot for Italian Vanity Fair. “We did two shoots where we got all these different people in that we felt were representative of London,” Chris recalls. “The idea was to retain ‘elements of their own style’. We gave them a choice of what they wanted to wear, and they supplemented what we did.” It was an intriguing new departure for Chris. “This idea of fashion portraiture,” he says, “where you are actually trying to say something about the person, trying to reflect what I felt about these people and at the same time trying to show them in a light that was in keeping with their character.” Feeling inspired, Chris set up a series of open studio days in London and invited a mix of people to come along and pose for him. In London includes many of these shots, together with further portraits that Chris has taken over the past few months, from the famous - Annie Lennox, Russell Brand, Liam Gallagher, Dannii Minogue, Robert Pattinson, and Robert Pattinson, actor

Emma Watson to name but a few - to the unknowns singers, dancers, musicians, stylists, models, bike messengers, students, architects and designers, with ages ranging from 8 to 80, all photographed in a way which brings out something that Chris sees as being an intrinsic part of the sitter’s nature. For example, he captures Robert Pattinson smiling - not something you see very often in most staged portraits of the actor. “All his pictures are really serious, and yet I’ve managed to get him smiling” Chris says. “For me, that is part of him. It’s my take on him. To me he’s an open, friendly person.” In London was launched at a private event held in Shoreditch on Thursday 12th April. To ensure that all monies raised on the night went to the charity Kids Company, the evening was financially-supported by Ian Lillicrap of Lillicrap Chilcott, the Cornwall Estate Agent, and Tom Cary, a talented Cornish-based singer, songwriter and guitarist (www.myspace.com/tomcarymusic). The total amount of the cover price (£25.00) of every copy sold was and continues to be donated to the lifechanging London-based charity, Kids Company. Kids Company was founded by the charismatic Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996 to provide practical, emotional and educational support to highly vulnerable Inner City children. Kids Company’s services reach 17,000 children across London, including those most deprived and at risk, whose parents are unable to care for them due to their own practical and emotional challenges. These exceptionally vulnerable children not only negotiate significant challenges in their family homes, they also face immense threat within their neighbourhoods. Often they are exposed to relentless violence, some are forced into working as drug couriers or prostitutes, and many experience chronic abuse. Kids Company provides a safe, caring, family environment where support is tailored to the needs of each individual. The

Edwin Louis, intern

charity operates through two street level centres and a therapy house in South London, as well as a drop-in provision in Camden, North London. It also offers and provides therapeutic and social work services in over thirty schools. “The work that Kids Company does is quite exceptional,” says Chris “and at a time when I have so many opportunities in my career it seems right to try to give something back.” This is the second publication that Chris has produced over the past three years. The first, Romance, was a magical collection of photographs capturing those special, raw moments which perfectly articulate the true meaning of romance. The couples featured in the book were all real couples with a strong sense of personal style and individuality and in varying stages of what Chris has described as ‘premortgage love.’ The 130 images, some in colour, some in black and white, still-life alongside lifestyle, are wistful, lustful, joyful and most importantly playful - the light, witty touch being an important element in much of Chris’s work. “Romance for me was the perfect vehicle to make pictures which can convey a number of emotions. I wanted to try to make pictures which could be sexy, funny, powerful and even soulful.” Romance is still available to purchase through Amazon. The theme of Romance proved so popular that Chris is now working on a follow-up edition, Romance USA, which he hopes to publish this coming Autumn, work schedule permitting! London-born Chris first worked in newspaper photography and celebrity portraiture, eventually becoming the exclusive photographer for George Michael and Wham. He went on to develop a career in fashion and beauty photography, as well as shooting lifestyle and portrait photographs for clients worldwide. The increasing popularity of his work eventually led to him uprooting his family from their home in Putney, relocating to Westport, Connecticut, where he established a studio base in the centre of New York City.
