Spring/Summer 2013 • Home From Home

Guy himself left Devon after studying Agriculture at college and went to work first in London and then in New York as a Management Consultant. He enjoyed living the high life for a few years before deciding the draw of Devon was overwhelming. He returned to Devon to the family farm. The love of surfing may have also played a small part in the decision-making process!

Guy Watson - Chairman of Riverford Organic Farms

His brothers and sisters followed a similar pattern, each spreading their wings and trying out different careers in other parts of the country before returning to the family business. Ben Watson had always been interested in the animals on the farm and so in his own passionate way developed the Riverford Farm Shop business concentrating on the meat and meat boxes and to this very day continues to experiment with pies, smoked meats and everything that makes his business unique and very successful in the marketplace. Oliver and Louise took over and manage the dairy herd and Rachel, the last to return to Riverford, now acts as Marketing Director for the business.

It’s been a tough year down on the farm but the Watson family aka Riverford Organic are not downbeat! Guy Watson and his 4 siblings still have a lot to celebrate – Guy was recognised by the BBC Countryfile programme as Farmer of the Year 2012-13 and the Riverford Field Kitchen has also recently been awarded a Silver for Taste of the South West, by SW Tourism Excellence Awards. Guy also won Food Hero at the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards in November 2012. His contribution to sustainable organic farming and his entrepreneurial achievements are undeniable. I met Guy Watson for a chat at the charmingly rustic Riverford Field Kitchen which is located on the same site as the Riverford head office. The farm and rolling Devon fields wrap itself around Wash Farm and even a wet February day could not dampen the charm exuding from the nerve centre at Staverton.

Guy, willingly admits to being an independent spirit and wanted to forge his own way in the farming business. After his return to Devon in 1987 he took on 3 acres of the farm for growing arable crops in an organic way. Each year the acreage grew

The Watson family have been at Riverford since Guy’s father, John, took over the tenancy farm in 1951 from the Church of England. Guy and his brothers and sisters grew up with the wonderful produce that his inspirational farming father grew and enjoyed fabulous food prepared lovingly cooked to home perfection by their mother. It set in place a great understanding of what matters in country life and a passion for home-grown meat and vegetables that have become synonymous with the family and the business. Martin Ellis - Photographer Spring/Summer 2013 • Home From Home

Such was the demand for their high quality produce that the farm business has grown from its base in Devon to incorporate 3 other farms in Yorkshire, Hampshire and Cambridgeshire. Guy himself has also now purchased a farm in France in the North Vendee and is looking to develop this with his own particular style of passion and joy de vivre! So despite the worst weather in the last 100 years and British farming being in crisis,

and every year he invested all the profits back into the business. He worked extremely hard – often 80 hours a week – living in a mobile home whilst he concentrated on the business. The organic farming produce was slow to take off but gradually as awareness grew both locally and nationally the Riverford Organic brand started to make breakthroughs with supermarkets and wholesalers. Guy, initially frustrated by the lack of concern for the environment and carbon footprint of farming and businesses, suddenly found it starting to grow and blossom just as he had hoped it would. The veggie box scheme started in a very small way. Guy and the team at Riverford began by knocking on doors and then delivering fresh, seasonal vegetables to around 30 local homes. It caught on and quickly grew in popularity. People liked the idea of having fresh, organic, seasonally grown vegetables delivered to their door and Guy was quick to see a major opportunity and franchised the delivery of the veggieboxes to ensure smooth and consistent growth of this arm of the business.

cooking. Guy described Alice as inspirational and on returning to Devon he concentrated on developing the idea and the Riverford Field Kitchen was born. Based in a barn-style building on the farm, designed by Guy, it has a unique ambience. A set menu, one service with shared platters of food where the vegetables really are the stars. With their new Chef, Rob Andrews now heading up the team – it looks placed to continue its successful and exciting journey. Riverford Organic has become a nationally known and recognised brand but a visit to the operation will prove that this is still very much a family concern. The head office building has tractor tyre tables, pallets forming work stations and other rustic farming implements adorning the walls. The staff are very much part of the family business and share in the profits. It looks and feels a great place to work.

The Riverford Field Kitchen came about after Guy took a sabbatical to California and Mexico. He was inspired after visiting a restaurant owned and run by Alice Waters. It focused on rustic, home style, locally sourced

Spring/Summer 2013 • Home From Home

Riverford has some exciting plans for the future. Yes profits will be very poor for the last year but the philosophy of the business – investing in the future – continues. Guy has plans to change the seating and layout of the Riverford Field Kitchen to make it more flexible. They are planning to continue and develop tours of the farm, targeting special groups, to bring the organic message to a wider audience. And the development of the farm and the food farmed will be maintained at the pinnacle of excellence and celebrated in everyway. Amongst the current news of horsemeat being found in processed foods – that sounds very reassuring. Mr Watson (senior) now in his late 80’s still maintains his interest in the farm and the carbon footprint. How proud he must be of the heritage he and his wife have laid down at Riverford – the next generation of nieces and nephews – are waiting in the wings – the future looks bright and very exciting at Riverford Organic Farm.
