Patek Philippe is the last, privately owned, independent Genevan watch manufacture, now headed by fourth generation owner and President Thierry Stern, who understands and revels in the challenge of leading a family company renowned for making the most highly valued and desirable timepieces in existence. Like Patek Philippe, Michael Spiers is a true family business established over sixty years ago. Keith White, brother-in-law of the late founder, Michael Spiers, together with nephew Adam Spiers and brother-inlaw Stephen Spiers continue the family tradition. Adam Spiers quotes, ‘The success of Patek is based on family values and heritage… similar in so many ways to that of Michael Spiers. My father would be so proud of an association between our two companies. This is exciting news, introducing the finest and most prestigious timepieces to our clientele throughout the West Country.’ It is now 170 years since Antoine Norbert de Patek and François Czapek set up a workshop together in the home of watchmaking, Geneva. But Mr Czapek turned out to be a difficult chap to work with, a problem resolved when Mr Patek met Jean Adrien Philippe at a trade exhibition in Paris. In 1842 they succeeded in manufacturing a pocket watch that could be set as well as wound by the

winding crown. They went into business together, and in 1851 their surnames were first joined together on watch dials. It was in that year, at the Great Exhibition in London, that Queen Victoria purchased one of their pendant watches. In fact, Prince Albert treated himself to a pocket watch as well. Patek Philippe has the habit of giving an individual number to each timepiece it produces, and also the name of its first purchaser. Which is how we know all about those celebrities, and also that one of the first wristwatches it manufactured, a oneoff in 1916, was a ladies’ platinum fiveminute repeater. A long list of ‘first-ever’ horological achievements followed, all faithfully recorded for posterity; a habit which, incidentally, makes stolen models easier to trace. The Great Depression which followed the Wall Street Crash in 1929 harmed the business of Patek Philippe, and three years later the enterprise was acquired by the Stern family, then manufacturers of high quality dials. Still in the Stern family, a new era began for Patek Philippe in the Spring of 2009, with the introduction of the Patek Philippe Seal. All of the manufacturer’s mechanical movements will be embossed with the

exclusive Seal. This is the evolution of a philosophy of quality and independence that the workshops in Geneva have been systematically pursuing since the company was founded in 1839. The Patek Philippe Seal is the watch industry’s most exclusive and stringent hallmark of quality and is a promise personally backed by Thierry and his father, Honorary President Philippe Stern. Proudly handed down from one generation to the next, Patek Philippe watches are a result of latest-generation technology combined with ancestral watchmaking know-how.
