A Celebration of Food and Music in Kingsbridge Friday, 21th June – Sunday, 23rd June


Last year rocked and this year it’s going to be even better! Everyone came away raving about Kingsbridge’s debut Food & Music Festival. Now this culturally vibrant South Devon town is set to stage its second festival of food and music. Taking place centred around Kingsbridge’s bandstand on the stunning quay, during the longest day of the year and the weekend which follows (Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd June 2013), this is the only way to celebrate the summer solstice. On the Friday afternoon there will be a delicious array of local delights on offer to taste. Then, at 6.30pm, the fun will really start when the music begins to play and, judging by last year, everyone of all ages will be on their feet dancing long before the sun finally does set. With surf rock from Beachfield to the best take on re-worked classics from Hot Diggety; from the brilliantly cheesy 80s pop band Aftersun to the nostalgia of 40s air force with AJs Big Band; and much more, it is going to be a feast of music. Set out to be an eating and drinking extravaganza of wonderful local produce whilst listening to great home-grown music, the Kingsbridge Food & Music Festival really has pulled together the best of the region’s talent both on the stage and in the kitchen. During the weekend there will be plenty of opportunity to taste wines from nearby Sharpham vineyard, indulge yourself at Red & White’s champagne bar or join the many others queuing up to sample Heron Valley’s organic cider and innovative cocktails. Quercus Brewery will be impressing festival attendees with their selection of real ales and Owens Coffee will be providing coffees for those driving home!

Not to mention Salcombe Dairy’s scrumptious ice-cream and South Devon Chilli Farm’s awardwinning sauces, salsas and fiery chilli chocolate. It promises to be a mouth-watering event. The founders of the Kingsbridge Food & Music Festival, Tasha Green, owner of local organic drinks company Heron Valley, and Steve Mammatt of Actionwest Business Systems are delighted that the festival is back. “The town was buzzing during and after the weekend of the last festival. There was no question about whether or not we should host it again this year.” Tasha says. To which Steve adds: “Once again, there has been a great deal of support from both traders and companies in the town and bands and artists from all around the region.” Commenting on the entertainment aspect of the festival, music organiser Rob Wheeler says: “With such wonderful diversity within the food and drink element of the festival, it makes total sense to present equally diverse music from some of the finest local bands and artists available”. Savoir Faire The Spirit of Adventure

Photo by kind permission: Bang Wallop of Salcombe For most, the word "adventure" will conjure up images of bravery conflict and intrigue, however tales of derring-do, desert islands and the brutality of nature are the stuff of old novels; having a "spirit of adventure" is in fact something quite different. A strength of character, curiosity, courage and the ability to work hard are the foundations needed to cultivate your desire for the unknown into something tangible and two Salcombe lads have got just what it takes. Jason McKinlay and Josh Tarr of team Savoir Faire are two local adventurers who embody the spirit of adventure are taking part in GB Row 2013. A gruelling non-stop and unsupported rowing race that will see the team circumnavigate the treacherous UK coastal waters in 50 days in order to break a new World Record for the fastest two-man team to circumnavigate the UK. An interesting testament to the danger and difficulty of this challenge is that more men have stood on the Moon than have rowed unsupported around the UK coast. A point which drew Jason to the challenge. Jason McKinlay is a Fitness and Wellness Advisor who is experienced in endurance events. Catching the fitness bug at an early age, Jason has been lucky enough to take part in some of the toughest challenges in the World such as a Trans Atlantic Row, the Marathon des Sables, the Jungle Ultra Marathon, Mount Everest Marathon as well as numerous marathons, ultra marathons and distance swims. Jason first got involved in GB Row 2013 when looking around for his next challenge. A dear friend suggested the event to him and after some research of his own he decided that this was one opportunity that he couldn't let pass by. Having had experience of rowing the Atlantic as one part of a duo Jason believes that working as a pair has great benefits in an endurance event such as this and set about searching for a teammate to join him on his expedition. 'Josh was the obvious choice and will be the perfect partner for me on this row', says Jason. 'Having spent time together on a group trip away I had a good idea of Josh's mindset and strengths and we work well together which will be key whilst on the water'. Josh Tarr is a sound technician with a love of the unknown. Less experienced than Jason in endurance events but by no means less able,

he says 'knowing of Jason's background, it was an absolute honour for me to be asked to join him in this enormous challenge. My biggest event so far has been cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End, something that many have achieved before, but I wanted to deal with in my own way'. Having suffered from a severe brain stem virus when he was younger Josh is particularly interested in the psychological aspects of endurance events and how the mind copes whilst dealing with exhaustion and muscle fatigue whilst under pressure'. 'Living on high calorie freeze dried food and rowing a total of 12 hour shifts a piece per day for 50 days will be a hard slog in itself. Throw in unpredictable weather patterns, fast turning tides, muscle fatigue and sleep deprivation and you potentially have a recipe for disaster. Navigation on this expedition is key and navigating our rocky coastline under these conditions will be extremely dangerous so we will need to stay focussed'. Savoir Faire will set off from HMS President in London at high tide – around 8am – on Saturday, June 1st. The team will row upstream under Tower Bridge before turning around, going back under the bridge and heading out to sea. After leaving the relative safety of the 'Tidal Thames' Savoir Faire will head South towards the World's busiest and most dangerous shipping lane. After negotiating their way westwards along the South Coast they will round Lizards Point and Lands End before sculling their way Northwards between Ireland and the UK. The weather patterns in the Irish Sea are likely to set the tone for the remainder of the race. From here Jason and Josh will have to pick their way through the Scottish Isles and round the very north or the UK mainland before joining the North Sea (the home stretch) and heading South towards the Thames and Tower Bridge. The weather is notorious in both the Irish and the North Seas and will see the duo facing high winds, strong currents and enormous waves. The Telegraph Ways With Words Festival brings people together to celebrate, learn, laugh and question. Book-lovers meet book writers; fans meet their heroes. Over ten days this festival brings together novelists, poets, biographers, historians, politicians, philosophers, scientists, comedians, broadcasters and commentators in the beautiful setting of Dartington Hall. A mix of formal gardens and Devon countryside surrounds this medieval hall, close to the river Dart. Between events you can relax in the grassy courtyard, enjoy a quiet moment in the Japanese garden, browse the bookshop and craft stalls, or explore the tiltyard. Ways With Words has been an annual event at Dartington for over twenty years. It began at a time when there were few literature festivals in the UK. Now there are many more festivals, but Ways With Words remains one of the most prestigious literary events around and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The programme brings over 100 eminent speakers together to talk about a great variety of topics. This year you can hear Sandi Toksvig talking about her life and career, Ann Widdicombe, Jack Straw and Alan Johnson speaking about their experiences in politics, BBC correspondent Gavin Hewitt unravelling the situation in Europe, and Melvyn Bragg on his latest novel about his motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time in a care home. There will be events about many different subjects including how to write, international issues, history, and the environment. Individual tickets for all of these events will be available, but there are also options to purchase day tickets and rover passes.

For those who want to be immersed in the festival atmosphere you can book a festival package. Staying on site gives you the freedom to come and go as you please, and provides your own space when you want some quiet time. Cheston Farm Equestrian Centre Cheston Farm Equestrian Centre was brought by current owners Sophie and Andrew Osborne in the Summer of 2007. Since then it has undergone a major transformation, now boosting some of the best facilities, instructors and horses in the Region. They also offer hacks around quiet country lanes and bridle paths, if you would prefer to take in some of the striking scenery on a sunny day. Newton Ferrers Equus Newton Ferrers Equus is a working farm, BHS, ABRS and official Pony Club approved riding school, stud and livery yard situated on it’s own land with extensive off road riding, woodland trails, riverside hacks and specialised arenas. We teach horse riding for beginners to experienced riders of all ages as well as teaching people how to look after and care for their horses. Our friendly staff are all fully qualified to the British Horse Society standards, with up to date CRB checks and child protection certificates. We have tailored lessons and clubs for children from 6yrs upwards, including official Pony Club on a weekly basis with a monthly ridden rally. The programme of lessons for children teaches ridden and pony management skills, providing hands on experience that helps young riders develop a thorough understanding of pony care. We also offer children and young adults the opportunity to take ABRS examinations on site, which can help them progress towards a career in the equestrian field.

Our horses and ponies range in size and type to suit all levels of rider, if you wish to start riding at beginner level or are an experienced rider wishing to jump or hack we have the facilities and staff to help you succeed and enjoy your riding experience. We run regular school holiday events programmes and competitions throughout the year, which attract participants from all over Devon. Our competitions start at a level suitable for all ages, giving the younger riders something to work towards. The quarter horse stud has been breeding for eighteen years, producing the Sierra line, which is sort after for correct and sound conformation and even temperament.
