It is situated close to the ancient town of St Albans, just over 20 miles from the centre of London, and gets its name from the fact that St Albans – or Verulamium as it was then – was once one of the major towns in Roman Britain and the scene of the famous Battle of Watling Street in AD 60 or 61 in which a Roman General, Gaius Suetonious Paulinus, and his Centurions led a Roman army to victory over Icenian rebel, Boudicca, thereby ending resistance to Roman rule in the southern portion of Britannia for almost 400 years. The Club, built in this historic setting, features an outstanding golf course designed by acclaimed international course architect, Simon Gidman, a former President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.
Gidman’s belief is that a golf course should be defined by the spirit of its landscape and that philosophy is evident at Centurion Club where he has created a natural lay-out which meanders over rolling landscape and features 80 bunkers, four major water features and undulating bent grass greens. At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course boasts a fine set of diverse long and short holes, starting in mature woodland and culminating in a panoramic par-5 which sits below the clubhouse and is protected by a large lake to the right of the green. horse race, the Magnolia Cup, in 2011. Twelve plucky ladies, selected for their outstanding achievements, were each lent a horse and taught to race by a top trainer. Famous names from the world of fashion gave their time to design the race silks, ensuring that each lady jockey looked the part. Supermodel and face of Burberry, Edie Campbell, won the inaugural event wearing silks designed by Jasmine Guinness. She was unable to defend her crown in 2012, with jewelry designer, Philippa Holland, winning a thrilling second edition of the race. The Magnolia Cup has so far raised hundreds of thousand of pounds for the nominated Ladies’ Day charities’. In 2013 they are the Haven Breast Cancer Support Centres and Best Beginnings, a charity working to give every baby in the UK the healthiest start in life. At racing yards throughout the country ladies are riding out in preparation and designers are once again hard at work designing the silks. Doubtless it will be a jewel in the crown of another fine festival at Goodwood. Glorious forms part of 19 exciting days of racing offered at Goodwood over the season, from May to October. As if to prove it’s not just about horses, other highlights include the sell-out Three Friday Nights held in May and June, when a top DJ follows an afternoon’s racing transforming the parade ring into a huge dancefloor and the family favourite August Bank Holiday Weekend where organisers recreate a 1950s summer holiday vibe, complete with an oldfashioned funfair, replica beach front and live music.
