THE COLLECTION A selection of the finest properties available in Harpenden & Hertfordshire's villages

Things are still looking good! Welcome to the latest issue of The Collection, showing a selection of our finest properties available for sale and let in Harpenden and the surrounding villages. Despite the coldest spring for 50 years, conditions now seem set fair for a full steam into summer! England, and certainly Harpenden and Hertfordshire’s villages, now look their best, with gardens at last showing a fresh bloom, which set off properties to their full potential. So it’s not surprising that this time of year is the most popular time of all for Vendors to present their homes to the market and as an owner, if you have a choice on timing, there is no better time to think about getting the process underway as soon as possible. This time last year we made the accurate prediction that prices locally would grow in 2012, and this is pretty much what we saw. That said, prime central older houses close to the station and High Street grew the most. Likewise, we have seen 2013 start very strongly indeed, brought about entirely by a

lack of supply in the market allied to very strong buyer demand. As long as interest rates remain low, which we think they will for the remainder of the year, the market should remain stable. Why John Curtis? Because over the last 35 years, we have experienced everything that the property market and general economy can throw at us and we have not only survived - but have emerged as one of the leading agents in the area. The way we guide you through the uncertainties and potential pitfalls of buying and selling is without doubt, the most important part of our work, and we believe it’s the main reason for our success. We hope you enjoy our current issue, not only for its portfolio of local properties, but we hope it gives you the confidence to approach us for an obligation-free valuation for the sale or letting of your home. Who knows, you may be featured in our next issue! If you are searching for your ideal property, we wish you every success! Regards, Ken Whittaker & Ric Merlo Proprietors John Curtis Ltd. For the John Curtis magazine Steven Hall travels to the Centurion Golf Club. Ideally located to the west of St Albans, within London’s commuter belt, The Centurion Club will provide its members with a golfing experience of unrivalled quality in a truly unique position.

The Centurion Club is one of Britain’s newest and most acclaimed private members’ Golf Clubs. It is situated close to the ancient town of St Albans, just over 20 miles from the centre of London, and gets its name from the fact that St Albans – or Verulamium as it was then – was once one of the major towns in Roman Britain and the scene of the famous Battle of Watling Street in AD 60 or 61 in which a Roman General, Gaius Suetonious Paulinus, and his Centurions led a Roman army to victory over Icenian rebel, Boudicca, thereby ending resistance to Roman rule in the southern portion of Britannia for almost 400 years. The Club, built in this historic setting, features an outstanding golf course designed by acclaimed international course architect, Simon Gidman, a former President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.

Gidman’s belief is that a golf course should be defined by the spirit of its landscape and that philosophy is evident at Centurion Club where he has created a natural lay-out which meanders over rolling landscape and features 80 bunkers, four major water features and undulating bent grass greens. At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course boasts a fine set of diverse long and short holes, starting in mature woodland and culminating in a panoramic par-5 which sits below the clubhouse and is protected by a large lake to the right of the green. At Centurion Club great emphasis has been placed on delivering excellence for its members and their invited guests. That is why Gidman was employed as course architect and why Southern Golf was brought on board as construction consultants.

Subsequently, Troon Golf has been installed to advise on agronomy while a luxurious clubhouse has been designed to exacting specifications by acclaimed architects, Harrison Mutch. Troon Golf has, for the past two decades, managed many of the finest golf courses in over 25 countries around the world, including Turnberry, The Grove and Bearwood Lakes in the UK, and Troon North, La Zagaleta, Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Mazagan and Kapalua internationally. “The Romans are famous for leaving a lasting legacy and that is something all of us working on this project wanted to achieve at the Centurion Club,” said Simon Doyle, Troon Golf’s Head of Agronomy. That aspiration was also shared by Centurion Club’s management team, led by Chairman Graham Wildish, and Managing Director, Scott Evans, who has spent 25 years working in senior management roles at Troon Golf in Arizona, Dubai Creek, Loch Lomond Bearwood Lakes and several other prestige golf clubs around Europe. Several other members of the team have considerable experience working at some of the world’s most recognisable elite golf clubs and that level of expertise will be invaluable as the new club reinforces its deserved reputation for excellence. “Through our work at other leading venues, we have garnered the experience necessary to understand the needs and wants of our current and prospective members,” said Evans. “We realise that it is imperative that the course is in immaculate condition year-round, and will continually strive to provide unmatched facilities and customer service. We have the expertise necessary to implement a strategy to satisfy all concerned. “Furthermore, the business acumen offered by our team will ensure that the Club thrives in a sustainable manner,” he added. “We will offer our members what will become a world-renowned golf course, in an immaculate setting combined with an experience rarely offered so close to a global urban hub such as London.” That prime location close to London and the motorway network is another advantage it has over many of its rivals. The Club is situated on the A4147, on the outskirts of St Albans, and close to Hemel Hempstead and many of the major conurbations in north London. It is only a couple of miles from junction 8 on the M1 and junction 21a on the M25, 10 minutes from Luton Airport, 25 minutes from Heathrow Airport and just under 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of London. The Centurion Club operates as a private Club, strictly for the use of its members and their invited guests. There are currently four categories of Membership available; Senate, Centurion, International and Corporate.

Widely acknowledged as the sporting and social highlight of the summer, Glorious Goodwood (Thursday 30th July to Saturday, August 3rd, 2013) is a quintessentially English event, synonymous with elegance and style. Over 100,000 people flock through the gates each year to enjoy this chic, relaxed and incredibly glamorous sell out five-day festival that celebrates the very best from the world of fashion and horseracing.

Part of the unique appeal of Goodwood Racecourse is its incredible setting. High in the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is renowned as being one of the most beautiful racecourses in the United Kingdom. It forms a key part of the magnificent 12000 acre Goodwood Estate; situated just outside Chichester with stunning views out to sea and as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day. The looped course hosts around 130 flat races each season: and the thrill of the chase makes for spectacular entertainment. As top racing pundit John McCririck puts it, “If you ever come racing, there is no better place than Goodwood.” Glorious Goodwood is no exception, with the standard of horse racing always exceptionally high. Actor Clive Owen sums it up quite simply, “It is considered one of the great meetings of the year. That’s why they call it Glorious.” Over four million pounds in prize money emphasises the calibre of racing on offer at Glorious Goodwood and 2013 will be just as exciting. However for many, world class sport is really just the back-drop to a fabulous day out, and Glorious is quite unique. According to model and die-hard equestrienne Jodie Kidd, “There is something very, very special about Goodwood and especially Glorious Goodwood. It’s quintessentially English.” Glorious is widely regarded as one of the most stylish race meetings in the UK and yet, unusually, this doesn’t come about through the enforcement of stringent dress codes. In fact, it is a much more relaxed affair; top hats are replaced with Panamas and guests in the hip Gordon Enclosure sip G&Ts to the lilts of a jazz band. One of the highlights of Glorious is Ladies’ Day, celebrated on the Thursday of race week each year. Needless to say the style stakes are raised, and the parade ring is the perfect place to spot beautiful people. In honour of celebrating all things female and raising some serious sums of money for women’s charities, Goodwood launched an all female, amateur

horse race, the Magnolia Cup, in 2011. Twelve plucky ladies, selected for their outstanding achievements, were each lent a horse and taught to race by a top trainer. Famous names from the world of fashion gave their time to design the race silks, ensuring that each lady jockey looked the part. Supermodel and face of Burberry, Edie Campbell, won the inaugural event wearing silks designed by Jasmine Guinness. She was unable to defend her crown in 2012, with jewelry designer, Philippa Holland, winning a thrilling second edition of the race. The Magnolia Cup has so far raised hundreds of thousand of pounds for the nominated Ladies’ Day charities’. In 2013 they are the Haven Breast Cancer Support Centres and Best Beginnings, a charity working to give every baby in the UK the healthiest start in life. At racing yards throughout the country ladies are riding out in preparation and designers are once again hard at work designing the silks. Doubtless it will be a jewel in the crown of another fine festival at Goodwood. Glorious forms part of 19 exciting days of racing offered at Goodwood over the season, from May to October. As if to prove it’s not just about horses, other highlights include the sell-out Three Friday Nights held in May and June, when a top DJ follows an afternoon’s racing transforming the parade ring into a huge dancefloor and the family favourite August Bank Holiday Weekend where organisers recreate a 1950s summer holiday vibe, complete with an oldfashioned funfair, replica beach front and live music. The racecourse has three enclosures, cleverly tailored to different guests: the Richmond Enclosure, well-appointed for a smart day out, the Gordon Enclosure offering the perfect setting to hang out with friends, have a flutter and enjoy the great range of food and drink on hand and the family-friendly Lennox Enclosure an affordable and relaxed option, ideal for those with children. This year’s racing season at Goodwood starts on Saturday, May 4th. For tickets and hospitality visit Telephone 01243 755055
