artholomew Landscaping is the leading landscape design, construction and maintenance company based in Central London. We have been creating and maintaining landscapes to the highest standards since 1989. The Company has grown in size and scope year on year without having to compromise the quality inherent in our work.

This picture illustrates the garden after the dividing wall was removed.

Employing over forty passionate landscape professionals, Bartholomew’s are skilled in all aspects of design, construction and horticulture, and the delighted reaction from our clients reflects the attention to detail that is present in every facet of our installations.

Many of our clients present us with sites that stretch and challenge our creative and organisational skills, and as the following case study demonstrates, our aim of creating a flawless landscape, perfectly wedded to our clients’ requirements, is ultimately achieved.

Ormond Place

Bartholomew’s brief was to reflect the quality of the interior while creating a stylish entertainment area, which was ultimately low maintenance. With the removal of the dividing wall, the new walled garden extended across the combined width of the entire building, which enabled it to be viewed and accessed from the kitchen and main reception room via double doors opening directly into the space. Additional access was also created from a first floor roof terrace via a newly installed spiral staircase.

Patio garden Sloane Square The starting point Bartholomew Landscaping were appointed as design and build contractors after being recommended to our client by their Architect Marc Deaves. After purchasing the adjacent property and completing a refurbishment of their newly combined buildings to an extremely high standard, our clients then turned their attention to the neglected patio garden. Completed garden

Bartholomew Landscaping solution It was agreed that a rather informal design with a Japanese feel would be most appropriate. With this in mind, for the main paving area, we used mid grey granite paving in coursed random widths and lengths and black granite was selected to emphasise the strong linearity of the pattern. An eye-catching black granite water feature gives the courtyard a central focus. Beautiful benches with integral lighting were sourced from Miramondo in Germany. We also incorporated a sculpture specifically purchased by the client for the garden.

A 3d sketch up model illustrates the overall design effect

Granite water feature cube

The Japanese theme was again reflected in the planting. Clipped cloud topiary trees provide a superb visual interaction with the hard edges of the granite paving. In turn, bamboo and evergreen flowering climbers add a soft, natural dimension to the walls, and river washed rounded pebbles and sculptural boulders add contrast to the surfaces. Strategic remote controlled lighting changes the mood of the garden for night-time use. An integrated irrigation system ensures that maintenance is kept to a minimum. Drainage is managed by the inclusion of a concealed slot drain running the width of the garden that replaces a mortar joint and new gully covers were hand crafted to replace the standard metal grates. Recessed manhole covers have been incorporated with superb masonry completing the overwhelming feeling of quality. As a new Bali member with many years of experience working at the high end of the landscape market. Winning four awards with two Principal awards and a special Design and Build award at this years National Landscape awards 2011. Bartholomew Landscapes is raising the bar of quality and excellence across the industry with very impressive results. DECKBUILDERS DESIGNED TO REFLECT A LIFESTYLE

D

eckbuilders will challenge their clients’ perceptions of outdoor space and how to use it. They will open up a world of opportunities for outdoor living by bringing the outside in and creating unique environments beyond the back door. Deckbuilders was established in 2004 by Jason Wakley following five very successful years with one of America’s leading deck builders. Prior to that Jason ran a successful landscaping company. Jason established Deckbuilders with the vision for the company to be Britain’s leading design and build company for permanent custom designed decks.

From their humble beginnings in a small farm outbuilding with a prefab office, Deckbuilders now operate from a large site on the outskirts of Pershore, Worcestershire. On this site they have their own workshops, storage barns and office space. They now buy in and machine all their own timber for all the components that are used to put together their uniquely designed deck projects. As Jason says:‘manufacturing all of our own components ensures that we are able to maintain strict control over every aspect of every deck project to provide maximum quality and performance’.

Deckbuilders design and engineer home extension decks to accommodate any ground conditions or space whether it is flat or sloping, at ground, first floor or at roof level. They bring inspiration and drama to your home providing innovative and unique designs. Deckbuilders manage every aspect of the deck from the very first initial discussion, through the development of ideas to the engineering and the installation. With their experience and hundreds of successfully completed projects they know that they can deliver on their service promise. Every Deckbuilders deck is designed and constructed to comply with Building Regulations. Every domestic deck comes with an insurance backed guarantee recognized by the Timber Decking Association. Their unique and comprehensive triple guarantee covers workmanship, structural defects and component longevity. Deckbuilders can incorporate railings, bench seating, planters, pergolas, gazebos, awnings, trellis panels and screens to provide function and decoration. They can incorporate hot tubs and swim spas and work closely with the two leading UK suppliers to provide that unique and complete outdoor environment. Deckbuilders attention to detail has been the key ingredient to the successful design and installation of all of their completed deck projects. It is the close relationship built up between Deckbuilders designers and their clients that ensures scope for individual expression. At the initial consultation meeting the Deckbuilders designer will start out by discussing a client’s needs and expectations in detail. They will get to know them and their lifestyle, what their tastes are; their expectations for the project and of course their budget. Deckbuilders feel that this initial meeting with any client is the most important part of their process towards achieving their clients dream. When a deck design is put together by Deckbuilders they will consider first and foremost the functionality of the deck.

“Everyone from the salesman, the office and crew twere professional and courteous. They took considerable care to ensure a quality finish and I am extremely happy with the end results.” – Deckbuilders Customer in Andover

“Very pleased with all aspects of the project. Good Job all round.” They will look at the traffic flow and how this will affect the deck space. They will look at how a client wants to use the space, take into account the furniture they want to incorporate, whether thy wish to incorporate a bar-b-que on the deck. Then they will look at level changes, railings, pergolas, deck board direction and patterns. These are all the aspects that can define a project into separate rooms. Using samples and their picture presentation folder Deckbuilders will also review material choices, rail styles and a host of various additions that can be included in the project. The design is then brought to life on Deckbuilders bespoke CAD system giving clients plan, elevation and 3D isometric views on exactly how their project will look. When designing a deck Deckbuilders strive to achieve that it

becomes a seamless extension of a client’s home and not just an attachment. Deckbuilders will add shape and style to the deck design and not just add a rectangular square cube to the back of a client’s property. When it comes to the construction of the project Deckbuilders only use installation crews that have gone through Deckbuilders rigorous training schedule. This schedule covers all the details that go in to putting together a Deckbuilders scheme and highlights the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail expected on every Deckbuilders project, whether it be large or small! For every project the installation crew is provided with a detailed construction drawings package accompanied by the Deckbuilders construction manual that contains all the

Deckbuilders specific connection, structural and finish details. All Deckbuilders personnel are covered by all the relevant trade insurances. While on site all members of the Deckbuilders team reflect the company’s ethos of the utmost professionalism and respect of the individual client’s property. As the Deckbuilders tag line implies every client is taken as a separate individual and every outdoor project that they put together is uniquely designed to reflect the lifestyle of each individual client. Surrey’s premier gallery exhibiting the best of British contemporary fine art S b

Advocate Gallery 56 The Street, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 1AZ Tel: 01372 274068 www.advocategallery.com

fter several successful years in Wimbledon Village, Caroline Burns decided to relocate her business, Advocate Gallery to Ashtead, Surrey.

An of Art

With a growing client base from Surrey, combined with living and raising a family in the area, the time was right to make the move. So when the perfect location presented itself, in the form of the old bank in Ashtead, it was an easy decision. “Historically banks hold a prominent position on the High Street and are municipal in design. The building needed to make a visual statement where the works of art can be easily seen, as a lot of art is sold from the gallery window,” says Caroline. Employing the highly acclaimed architect Richard Gardiner to draw up the plans for the space and project manage the works meant Caroline’s vision to create a modern environment which reflects the best of British contemporary fine art, was made a reality. Richard’s first priority was letting light into the building, this was achieved by incorporating a full length glazed front and two new display windows on the side wall, thus creating a dual aspect frontage where work can be displayed in The Street as well as in Grove Road and flooding the gallery with light. But not everything was quite so straight forward, when it came to the bank’s vault, structurally it was impossible to remove as it has 3ft thick walls of reinforced high-density concrete! But a solution was not too far away; it has been opened up on two sides to create a darkened viewing area featuring large subtle works that are muted in colour. Crucial to achieving the overall ambience, it was essential that everything in the building was black, white or glass, the main design components seen in framing. Interior design features, such as glass shelving, white furniture and lighting all needed to compliment this and not detract from the artwork. With her extensive experience of what customers like, Caroline knew exactly the atmosphere that she wanted to create, an art gallery that you don’t feel intimidated to walk into or pressurized once inside; where you don’t need to know anything about the "art-world" but simply know what you like. “It’s important that when clients walk into the gallery they are not ‘hit’ by a sales person, that they can browse an exhibition and look for that perfect genuine piece of art, that they connect with, at their own pace.”

Advocate Gallery aims to be the premier gallery in Surrey specialising in the best of British contemporary fine art. Establishing good relationships with those artists that they exhibit is key to their success, enabling Caroline to select the newest works first and in turn offer exclusivity to her clients. “Exhibiting British art is something I feel strongly about, there’s amazing talent in this country and to be able to showcase the best of it is very rewarding. I have always been passionate about art and want the gallery to reflect this." By not importing work, dealing in reproductions or trading with mass market suppliers, Advocate Gallery can offer something unique to its clients. Over the coming months the gallery will be home to an ever-changing programme of exciting exhibitions from established artists, such as celebrated landscape painter Chris Rigby. After painting the rugged moors and mountains of north England and Scotland, Chris had turned his attention to the Surrey Hills. A selection of his new work, an exploration of the Surrey landscape, will be displayed exclusively at the gallery this autumn. Premiering new artists is also an area that Caroline is dedicated to, “we are proud of the fact that we have launched several artists’ careers who are now enormously successful today”. It’s always preferable for a client to view the work in person before making their purchase, but with the busy lifestyles we all lead this can sometimes be tricky. Advocate Gallery can provide out of hours viewing at the gallery or in your home. If you’re hesitating about a purchase, work can be loaned for a period so that you have time to see how the piece works in different light and in different hanging places. In today’s financial climate, many clients are also looking to invest shrewdly. Unlike most luxury purchases that date and de-value as trends pass, if you choose wisely, art can work in exactly the opposite way. Advocate Gallery is happy to guide you through the process, “I am thrilled when my clients’ remark that not only does a piece continue to give them great enjoyment, but they have learnt that it is now proving to be a healthy investment,” says Caroline. Commissioning art is a growing area, owning a piece of original art that has been created for you is simply magical. Advocate Gallery are very experienced in arranging a commission for you, after all it's their business to get it right! Capturing a moment on canvas and portraying a mood using the subtleties of an artist's technique means you can have the ultimate gift or family treasure created exclusively for you. When a client visited with a photograph from their honeymoon in the French Alps, Candice Tait was the perfect artist to translate this onto canvas by capturing the wild energy and beauty of the landscape. The result, a stunning work of art that will be treasured forever.

“We’re extremely excited about relocating to Surrey, not only will we be nearer to many of our current clients, but are looking forward to forming new relationships in and around the area. I think we’ve created a welcoming space in which to showcase our works of art. I certainly enjoy walking into the gallery everyday and hope others will too,” says Caroline. Conveniently located on the A24, between Leatherhead and Epsom and close to Epsom Racecourse and the RAC Club, there is ample free parking for visitors. Advocate Gallery grew out of Advocate Art the leading artist agency, over 10 years ago. Advocate Art was founded by Edward Burns in 1992, starting out as an artist’s co-operative, the business has grown into one of the world’s leading artist’s agencies.
