ADVANCED HEARING AID TECHNOLOGY $ For Less Than 200

“I was amazed! Sounds I hadn’t heard in years came back to me!” — Don W., Sherman, TX

by Janet Spencer As you read this, there are 2,000 thunderstorms in progress across the earth. Around 100 lightning strikes will hit the ground in the time it takes to read this sentence. Storms and lightning are an essential part of our ecosystem. Thunderstorms owe their existence to two scientific principles. First, warm air rises. Second, cool air cannot hold as much water as warm air can.

HOT AIR • Hot air rises. That’s why smoke goes up a chimney and hot air balloons float. The sun warms the surfaces it falls upon, heating air above it. The hot air rises, creating a vacuum. Cool air flows in from the sides to replace it, and is also warmed. Soon there’s a steady column of hot air rising. • There is much water vapor in air. Warm air holds a greater amount of water than cold air does. When warm air cools, it drops the water, forming a cloud. (This is why you exhale little clouds on cold days.)

• Cold air sinks. When the rising air has cooled, it falls and forms a downdraft. After sinking, it heats up again and is swept up in the updraft. The cloud continues to grow as more heated air rises into it, like a balloon being blown up. Now there are conflicting air currents inside the cloud. These currents frequently become unbelievably strong. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

HE SHOULD OF FLUSHED TWICE OHIO (2007) - A sheriff said the evidence was exactly where a bank robbery suspect claimed it would be – in the toilet. The suspect, who investigators believe took part in robbing the Bank of Magnolia on April 20, cut up stolen money stained red by an exploding dye pack and flushed it down a toilet at his parents’ home, Stark County Sheriff Tim Swanson said. Acting on a tip, sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect on Monday while he was playing cards at a bar. The suspect told deputies where they could find the money, Swanson said. Deputies with a search warrant removed the toilet from its plumbing and found shredded U.S. currency in the toilet trap, Swanson said. The suspect was being held on a charge of aggravated robbery, a county jail officer said.

SANDPAPER CRAYON ART

Connecting Businesses With Customers In More Ways Than Ever! CELEBRATING 17 YEARS!

I have a variety of bright, chubby crayons my toddler-age granddaughter loves to grab tightly in her fist and press on paper, or to be honest, anything in reach. I’ve also observed older school-age kids who enjoy pressing crayons firmly on paper to express themselves with designs and images. This activity using sandpaper for the “paper” is an interesting twist for engaging those impulses to create with verve, while enhancing a child’s natural creativity and love of art. It’s an easy technique to offer a new expression using everyday crayons in bright colors and sandpaper out of the toolbox. The texture of sandpaper will create a beautiful picture composed of tiny dots that might resemble pointillism, a painting technique used by postimpressionist painter Georges Seurat. He used thousands of dots of color that you can see up close but that blend into an image when you step back, away from the painting. Try these steps to create a clever piece of pointillist-like art in seconds. What is the magic ingredient? A dot, your kids might say. Uh-uh. It’s an iron!

HERE’S THE STUFF AND THE FUN: 1. Pick out an array of bright crayons. Vibrant blues, greens, purples and reds are ideal. 2. Create a drawing on a sheet of medium-grain sandpaper, pressing very hard as you color. Designs that use blocks of color rather than thick lines work best here. 3. When the drawing is done, turn the sandpaper over on top of a plain, white piece of drawing or construction paper. An adult should heat an iron on a low temp, and iron the backside of the sandpaper as if ironing a hanky. Pass it over the back evenly and slowly, counting to 20 seconds with your kids before picking up the sandpaper to reveal the picture on the paper in dot form. 4. There it is. Sandpaper pointillism. Never mind French postimpressionists for the moment. You’ll have your own very “impressive” artist in residence. Encourage your child to look closely to see the dots, then step away and discover how they blend together. Note how crayon melted on the sandpaper, too, providing a “two for one” art project. DID YOU KNOW? • In medieval China, it was not unusual for a mother to breastfeed a child until the child was seven years old. • Small animals like bats and shrews consume up to one and one half times their body weight in food every day. For an adult human male, this would be like eating 1,000 quarter-pound cheeseburgers a day, every day; or about 50 Thanksgiving dinners a day. • More Americans have died in automobile accidents than have died in all the wars ever fought by the United States. • Betsy Ross’s other contribution to the American Revolution, besides sewing the first American flag, was running a munitions factory in her basement. • Though human noses have an impressive 5 million olfactory cells with which to smell, sheepdogs have 220 million, enabling them to smell 44 times better than man. • Badminton was once known as battledore and shuttlecock. The game as we know it today took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England – home of the Duke of Beaufort. • The California Board of Equalization has ruled that bartenders cannot be held responsible for misjudging the age of midgets. • In the second it takes to turn the page of a book, you will lose about 3 million red blood cells. During that same second, your bone marrow will have produced the same number of new ones. • From the smallest microprocessor to the biggest mainframe, the average American depends on more than 264 computers per day. • The pharaohs of ancient Egypt wore garments made with thin threads of beaten gold. Some fabrics had up to 500 gold threads per one inch of cloth. • Snails sleep a lot. In addition to several months of winter hibernation, they crawl into their shells to get out of the hot sun, which dries them, or heavy rain, which waterlogs them. Desert snails may even doze for three or four years.

• Alexandre Dumas, best known for “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” felt very strongly that all his works must be presented on colored paper. He wanted all his fiction presented on blue paper, his articles on pink paper and his poetry on yellow paper. • Golf balls were originally made from dried cow eyeballs. • The tea bag was an accidental invention. In 1908, tea merchant Thomas Sullivan distributed his samples in small silken sacks. His customers, not realizing they were samples, dunked them in hot water, and Sullivan soon found himself swamped with orders for his “tea bags”! • In his travels, Marco Polo believed at one point that he had stumbled across unicorns, writing that “They are very ugly brutes to look at. They are not at all such as we describe unicorns.” Not surprising, considering that he was actually viewing rhinoceroses. • Ancient Romans created black hair dye by fermenting leeches in vinegar.

OHAGURO Ohaguro is the process of dyeing the teeth black in Japan. Black dyed teeth are a symbol of status thought to compliment the white painted faces of women. The dyeing was also done to mask the yellow teeth and make the teeth stronger by preventing the growth of cavities. It was outlawed in 1870.

• The game of marbles is estimated to be about 5,000 years old. A RADIO REALITY CROATIA (2009) - A cheating husband was caught out when his wife arranged a live call from his favorite radio program as a birthday treat. Davor Ivanovic was supposed to be alone on a business trip to Zagreb, Croatia. But when DJ Barbara Kolar called his room a woman answered and said he was taking a shower.

When he came to the phone he claimed the woman had been his wife - while his furious real-life wife Jasna was listening in on another line. Ignoring pleas from radio staff to keep quiet she screamed at her hapless husband: “Who are you with?” And stunned Davor shouted at the show hosts before hanging up: “Why have you done this to me? We have kids.”

BEST $24 I EVER SPENT! I’m at a dollar store to get a spade to plant bulbs in my garden and this little kid decided to throw a fit over wanting a large candy bars instead of the smaller ones and then called his mother a “B*tch” because she wouldn’t get him this particular bar. She eventually gave in and said to her child “I’ll get you the bigger one when we get to the register.” Well… I’ll tell you now I had no intentions of spending $24 on candy bars, but the look on the little kid’s face as I walked out with ALL they had left was priceless!

SIBLING LOVE “Today, I operated on a little girl. She needed O- blood. We didn’t have any, but her twin brother has O- blood. I explained to him that it was a matter of life and death. He sat quietly for a moment, and then said goodbye to his parents. I didn’t think anything of it until after we took his blood and he asked, “So when will I die?” He thought he was giving his life for hers. Thankfully, they’ll both be fine.” – Dr. Jim Clark The national animal of Scotland is the Unicorn.

PLANET OF THE APES The cast of Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes had great difficulty dealing with their extensive makeup. (Eating, for example, required the aid of a small mirror because, as Helena Bonham Carter explained, “you’ve got no idea where your mouth is!”) The actors were also warned about the flammable glues used to apply the makeup, as well as the flammable nature of the makeup itself. (“Be careful when you light the cigarette,” the actors were told. “You’ll lose your face.”) Mark Wahlberg learned first-hand how flammable the makeup really was

while filming a scene in which his character was pelted with fireballs. Extras in ape suits were supposed to throw fireballs at him and miss. On the tenth take, however, he was hit twice and his clothes ignited. “Mark was literally on fire,” Bonham Carter later recalled. “But we were next to a lake - and he went out pretty quickly.” Wahlberg later learned the source of the problem. “The stuntmen,” he explained, “were seeing who could get closest to me - and whoever hit me would get a hundred bucks!”

FLORIDA (2007) - A woman had a lucky escape when her bra saved her from a bullet. Debbie Bingham was visiting her family in St. Petersburg when her bra came to her rescue. A .45-caliber bullet had been fired into the air by a stranger. When it fell back down to Earth, it struck her in the left shoulder. The left strap on her bra took the brunt of the damage and Debbie was left uninjured.

WISCONSIN (2008) - A couple that recently moved in to an apartment got a surprise upon discovering about $12,000 in cash inside the refrigerator. Colleen Mesler, 65, said that she found the bills in the freezer, when her husband Jim asked her to clean it out. The cash was seen deteriorating and covered with mold, and wrapped in tin foil. “I thought it was old meat, stale meat,” said 55-year old Mesler. “But it didn’t smell like bad meat,” recalled Colleen. “I pulled it apart and found $100 bills. I was more than shocked. ‘I’m not throwing this away,’ I thought.” After prying the bills apart with a pair of tweezers, the couple counted a total of about $12,000.

“About $2,000 of it was torn up, or we couldn’t get the mold off it,” said Jim. The couple took the cash to the M&I Bank, hoping to exchange the moldy, broken-up cash for fresh ones. They were told to call the police. The Meslers waited for the official word on whether or not they would be allowed to keep the money. Unfortunately, the previous renters of the apartment had been charged with drug trafficking, after a police raid uncovered crack cocaine, marijuana, a scale, and other pieces of evidence that pointed to drug sales, so the money may be confiscated by the court to pay for police drug enforcement.

UNHEARD HISTORY

MERLIN’S MAGIC SKATES The first roller skates were perfected more than two centuries ago by Joseph Merlin who, unfortunately, failed to perfect the art of skating as well. His first public demonstration ended in disaster. A renowned maker of violins and harpsichords, the Belgian-born Merlin moved to London in 1760, where he dreamed up the idea of replacing the blades on ice skates with metal wheels. To dramatize his invention, Merlin dressed as a minstrel and made a spectacular entrance on skates at an elegant masquerade ball. He dazzled the other guests as he wheeled gracefully about the ballroom floor while playing a violin. Then, as his admirers watched in horror, Merlin lost control and sailed headlong into a crystal mirror, demolishing it and his handcrafted violin and reportedly breaking his nose. Note: Thanks in part to Merlin, roller skating did not enjoy real popularity until a skating craze swept America and Europe in the 1860s.

THUNDERSTORMS (CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER)

• Tiny droplets combine until they become big enough to fall against the updrafts, creating a stronger downdraft. Soon the downdraft becomes so strong that it chokes off the updraft, and the storm abates. • Billions of particles of water and dust collide and shatter in the cloud’s violent winds. Electrons, the electrically charged particles that revolve around the nucleus of an atom, are knocked loose. Some atoms pick up extra electrons, and other atoms are short of electrons. Therefore, some atoms acquire a negative charge; some positive. The negatively charged particles drop to the lower level of the cloud and the positively charged particles are carried to the upper layers. The cloud has a negative charge on the bottom and a positive charge on top. The ground below the cloud has a positive charge. Lightning occurs when the opposite charges become too strong to keep away from each other any longer. Lightning is the electrical discharge from one region of charged particles to another region of oppositely charged particles. The light is the glow of atoms and molecules that are energized by this electrical discharge. SHOCKING FACTS • The small shock from static electricity after walking across a carpet or stroking a cat is identical to lightning, on a much smaller scale. • The core of lightning ranges in width from 1/10 of an inch to 2 inches, but the energized area can range from 3 to 20 feet wide.

• Cloud to ground flashes are rarely over a mile long, but cloud to cloud bolts can travel over 100 miles, sometimes hitting the earth. This is known as a “bolt out of the blue.” • In Pittsburgh in July of 1947, one bolt was measured at 345,000 amperes. Normal household current is 15 amperes. • A flash may last from 1/500th of a second to 2 seconds.

• A large thundercloud may hold 150,000 tons of water, which would be enough to fill a pond a mile long, 300 feet wide, and 5 feet deep. • During a heavy storm when 2 inches of rain falls, 90 lbs. of water fall on each square yard of earth, or more than 200 tons an acre. • Over 4 trillion gallons of water fall on the continental U.S. every day as precipitation. • The Rocky Mountain area gets about 50 to 70 thunderstorm days annually. Kampala, Uganda has about 242 thunderstorm days each year. Java, Indonesia, has about 223. In Arctic and Antarctic regions where air is cold and stable, there may be a thunderstorm once every ten years. In deserts there is plenty of heat but no moisture, and therefore few storms. In the U.S., Florida is the state with the most storms. In Florida, lightning strikes the average square mile of ground up to 46 times per year. THE RUMBLE OF THUNDER • The temperature of the air surrounding a lightning bolt heats up to about 27,000° F. Consider that the surface of the sun is only 10,000°! Thunder is caused when the air along the bolt expands with explosive violence, radiating pressure waves through the atmosphere. Thunder can usually be heard for seven miles clearly, but can sometimes be heard for 40, although it is seldom heard for more than 20. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 7)

• On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as “Seward’s Folly” and “Seward’s icebox.” • On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Eiffel Tower Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world’s tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. • On April 2, 1902, the first American theater devoted solely to movies opens in Los Angeles. • Nitrogen is the world’s best fertilizer. It’s a vital element in the food chain for plants, animals, and humans. It is absorbed through the roots of a plant, and it returns to the atmosphere through decomposition. The air in our atmosphere is made of four parts nitrogen to one part oxygen. The heat from a bolt of lightning combines nitrogen chemically with rain. The rain brings the fixed nitrogen to earth where it can be absorbed by plants. About 100 million tons of nitrogen are washed down into the soil each year. That’s more than all the fertilizer plants in the world can manufacture. Life couldn’t exist without it. • A single strike can scorch an area as small as a spot or as large as 25 acres. In the U.S., lightning is the sixth most frequent cause of structural fire and accounts for 11 percent of annual fire losses. It is responsible for nearly half of all fires occurring in national forests. The largest dry lightning storm on record started 1,488 fires in the northern Rockies during a 10-day period in June of 1940. Between 1940 and 1975, around 230,000 lightning fires occurred on the national forests of the Western U.S. • The danger from lightning is at its greatest when the storm is approaching, just before the rain begins. About 25 percent of all lightning fatalities occur when people seek shelter beneath tall trees – an easy target. • The effect of lightning on a tree that is hit depends on how long it has been raining. If the tree is wet to the base, the electricity will follow the water film down the trunk to the ground, leaving the tree intact. If the tree is not wet to the ground, the lightning will follow the sap down the inside of the tree. The sap vaporizes, and because it’s confined to narrow channels, it blows the tree apart. Oak trees suffer from explosions more than other kinds of trees because they have rough barks that don’t carry water as well as smooth bark.

REALLY? CANADA - Derrick Leigh Hardy, 21, said he didn’t know what else to do? The Alberton, P.E.I., Canada, man was watching his girlfriend’s 10-monthold daughter, and the girl had a fever. Admitting he has “no real parenting skills,” he decided to put the baby in the freezer. He claimed the baby was only in the freezer for 40 seconds when his girlfriend came home, but a doctor said he found “transient” frostbite on the girl. Hardy has been found guilty of assault and “unlawfully confining” the infant, but was cleared of causing bodily harm because there were no permanent injuries.
