Pentacle Theatre started in a barn off Highway 22 in 1954 and, from those humble beginnings, has grown into a local institution that will hold its 60th Anniversary Gala this year. Pentacle is Salem’s premier community theatre, offering professional-quality productions in an intimate setting. The troupe now produces an eight-play season each year that involves hundreds of people from the community who do everything: directing, performing, building sets, costuming, ushering and selling refreshments. Pentacle offers season tickets, and one out of every five subscribers lives in cities outside Salem. The theater also reserves three performances of each production as fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations, generating more than $250,000 for those groups over the years.

Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre first opened in 1936 and has been under its current ownership since 1974. The Palace has always had the most modern and up-to-date projection and sound and now shows the latest feature films on a giant 40-foot screen in High Definition Digital Projection with Dolby 7.1 Digital Sound. The Palace is a survivor - when a fire destroyed the interior of the theatre in 2012, building owner Marjorie Eng and Palace Theatre business owners Roger Paulson and Stu Rasmussen spent five long months restoring the theatre to its Art Deco-era beauty. Admission prices are low, with daily bargain matinees, and the Palace is open 365 days a year.
