During one of my many study breaks the other day — I don’t like to use the word “procrastination” because it hurts my ego — I went on Twitter.

Scrolling through my Twitter feed, I started noticing a trend from people using the hashtag “#AlexFromTarget.” I didn’t know what it was about but like a true, curious journalist, I decided to start reading more about the background of it.

For those of you who are not familiar with the hashtag, Alex, whose last name is currently unknown, is an average teenager who works at Target. During one of Alex’s shifts, someone decided to take a picture of him and, in a few seconds, “Alex from Target” was a new phenomenon. His talent? Just being cute to some people and being able to make it onto everyone’s timeline via retweet.

You might say I’m a “hater,” and so be it. But when we feed into this brand of craziness, we are taking focus away from so many things as a society. I swear I’ve seen more tweets about Alex from the people of my generation than about the Ebola cases in the United States of America or even in other parts of the world. Way to go, peeps!

When these things happen, I start to question myself, about the role I play and importance of social media in our society. I mean, are we using social media just to promote a nobody? Sorry if I

hurt someone’s feelings. Alex is not the first random kid to rise to fame just for his looks via social media. Sadly, he will not be the last one, either.

This whole thing infuriates me, because there are so many important things that we as a generation should be paying attention to. Instead, the majority of our generation is filling followers’ timelines with a young boy who has an innocent Justin Bieber look.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against the guy who now has thousands of followers on Twitter and might think he is this generation’s “dandy,” a man obsessed with his appearance.

I have something against the people who keep tweeting about him. I’m afraid my generation is becoming more superficial than ever. While you are tweeting about how Alex from Target is putting your fruits in some plastic bags, there are one thousand problems that are much more important and that need to be in the spotlight, in everybody else’s timelines.

I wish the best of luck to Alex from Target, although many of you will think he has a lot of luck for having thousands of followers and being what society thinks is handsome, pretty or cute.

And I wish good luck to my generation, too.

I hope we can move from a generation that uses Twitter or other social media networks to talk about trashy nonsense into a generation that really cares about inequalities in the United States of America or candidates running for the different governmental positions.

I know we can’t save the world with a retweet, but we can definitely stop spreading stupidity around Twitter. Alex from Target, I hope you can understand that you haven’t achieved anything in life with just being good looking.

Professional writing junior Brittney Urich doesn’t have any Election Day horror stories about long lines and wait times to cast a ballot.

Urich voted on Tuesday, and she was in and out in a matter of minutes.

She cast her first ballot in the 2012 presidential election.

Both times, Urich voted at the Union, which was one of four polling locations on campus this Election Day. “I think it’s convenient,” Urich said. “I didn’t like the idea of having to send home an absentee ballot, and I didn’t like the idea of trying to figure out where in East Lansing I was going (to vote).”

With the polling station on the way to her classes, voting fit easily into Urich’s schedule.

“Having come to the Union twice, I really like it because I get to walk in — I know where it is on campus, and I’m not trying to find out where I’m supposed to be going,” Urich said. “It makes it a little more familiar and a little more comfortable.”

There were voting locations open to students in Brody Hall, IM Sports-East and IM Sports-West, in addition to the Union.

“We moved here to make it easier for the students,” said Cathy Scott, chair of Precinct 12 inside the Union. “We were at one of the churches out near Abbot Road, so we were hoping we could get better

turnout here.”

The short lines at the polls that Urich experienced were convenient for her and other voters, but it also means something else — a lot of student voters did not show up.

“I usually have 1,200 people in my precinct,” Scott said

about halfway through the 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. period when polls are open. “So I could get that many, but I only have 50 or 60 at this point. It’s a pretty bad turnout, if you just look at the numbers.”

Scott said she wasn’t expecting a big jump in voter turnout

after 5 p.m., which many voting locations experience after voters get off of work, because students often show up before or after class.

“I was expecting 100 (voters), so I might get there,” Scott said. “But that’s still a pretty puny percentage.”

Deer residents — there are concerns about them among citizens in East Lansing.

The growing population of white-tailed deer in the city has been a common topic in public conversation for years.

“The city started looking at this issue back as early as 2011 and the city conducted a survey with residents … at that time the city recognized there were measures we could put in place that we had not yet put in place,” East Lansing Environmental Services Administrator Catherine DeShambo said. “Over the course of the last two years we’ve been putting in place those measures.”

City officials alongside MSU professors from the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife hosted a meeting with residents on Oct. 30 to educate and receive feed-

back, DeShambo said.

In 2011, the city conducted an online survey asking residents how concerned they were about the presence of deer in the city and the safety issues having deer around can bring to residents.

According to the city of East Lansing’s survey summary, 60 percent of the 245 respondents reported to have some type of concerns about the deer population in the city — 68 percent of the respondents reported to have concerns about the safety threats that deer can impose on residents, such as car accidents involving the four-legged animals.

Fisheries and Wildlife professor Henry Campa said although there have been cases of white-tailed deer transmitting bovine tuberculosis in the northern part of Michigan, there have not been cases reported in or near East Lansing.

“This is an ongoing process — we are looking for the must sustainable and

long-term practices that we could put in place to ban deer in the city,” DeShambo said. “Certainly we have landscaping and a habitat with parks and lots of recreations and lots of really nice lawns, so deer certainly like that … we need to find ways to manage that and to do it in a way that is sustainable to the city.”

As part of the city’s effort to control the deer population, East Lansing City Council approved during the summer an ordinance that prohibits residents from feeding deer. Under the ordinance violators could pay up to $250.

In the meantime, the city council is still evaluating some recommendations that experts in wildlife management have given to them.

According to the MSU Extension Office, residents can take action by planting hot peppers, cucumbers, onions, lilacs and marigolds, which can deter deer. Using horizontal barriers helps, too.

The spirit of the Love Like Lacey campaign lived on through two MSU alumni who ran the New York City Marathon Sunday in honor of Lacey Holsworth.

Holsworth was introduced to MSU students through her friendship with then-senior and MSU basketball forward Adreian Payne last year. She captured the hearts of many in the Spartan community and the nation, but in April, the 8-year-old died from neuroblastoma, a nerve-cell cancer.

After her death, wristbands and T-shirts were sold to honor Holsworth and support her family, and basketball sportscaster Dick Vitale created a pediatric cancer research grant in her memory.

MSU alumni Sarah Grossbart and Eric Flores, class of 2004, decided to team up with Vitale and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to raise money for the grant.

“Hearing Dick Vitale talk about her and about his charity, hearing how passionate and committed he is, it’s hard not to get involved,” Grossbart said.

Grossbart, Flores and their friend Mara Reinstein ran the New York City Marathon this past weekend with the goal of raising $10,000 for cancer research. They hope to help children like Holsworth who suffer from cancer at a young age.

“We were so moved by Lacey’s story, it was heartbreaking to see a little girl fight so hard and lose her battle,” Grossbart said.

For the past two years, Grossbart and Reinstein have been fundraising for organizations such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Stand Up To Cancer and The American Cancer Society. This time they wanted to support a cause closer to home.

“That little story got such national atten-

tion, and I think that everyone was touched by this girl who was so courageous and brave fighting this battle,” Reinstein said. “She was so sick and still did so much and had a really positive outlook on life.”

While deciding where they wanted to donate the money they would raise by running the New York City marathon this year, Reinstein learned that pediatric cancer research largely relies on private donations, not government funding.

Their fundraiser, Spartans for Lacey, has raised $17,045 so far. After receiving an overwhelming response, they bumped up the goal to $20,000.

Comments from donors on the campaign’s First Giving webpage supported their efforts.

For all of his career, senior defensive end Marcus Rush has lived in the shadow of the guy opposite of him.

Whether it be five star All-American recruit William Gholston or NFL first round projection junior defensive end Shilique Calhoun, Rush has always flew under the radar earning the title “silent but deadly” by one teammate.

Regardless of not receiving as much attention from national and local media as his teammates, Rush has built a resume at MSU that some would consider untouchable. This week against No. 13 Ohio State, Rush will match the record for most career starts in MSU history, helping the Spartans become a household name during the process.

Mix in Rush’s ties to the state of Ohio, and Saturday serves as an impactful day for the iron man of MSU football.

EVOLVING OVER TIME Not many current Spartans can say they saw substantial playing time as a freshman, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Rush not only has been a regular name in the starting lineup, but a regular force on the field for MSU. During his career in green and white, Rush has been selected to multiple freshman All-American teams, All-Big Ten teams and is once again making noise this season.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native was recently selected by ESPN and Phil Steele for its Midseason All-Big Ten second team with stats already nearly better than last season. Through the first eight games, Rush is only two tackles shy of last year’s number with 28 already this season. He also has recorded 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble this season.

Since his first start back in 2011, Rush said he has been able to continue to learn more about the game, ultimately leading to his latest success now as a fifth-year senior.

“Freshman year, you’re new to the whole experience, you’re really focusing on trying to learn where you’re going, what you’re supposed to be doing, how you’re supposed to be acting and trying to learn the plays,” Rush said. “As you get older, you start learning the system, everything just comes second nature and that’s really when you start playing better because you’re playing faster.”

Rush’s progression over the years not only has played a role on his current ability on the field, but also on the improvement of his teammates.

Multiple players talked about the impact Rush has had on the progression of his defensive teammates, but none have been more affected than his defensive end partner — junior Shilique Calhoun.

Through the past two seasons, Calhoun has received a lot of national attention as one of the best defensive ends in the country, even recently being named a semifinalist for the 2014

Spotlight Chuck Bednarik Award for most outstanding defensive player. But Calhoun doesn’t take all the credit for his success, pointing to Rush as a primary reason for why he’s received his national accolades and recognition.

RECORD SETTER Over the last four years MSU’s defense has seen the likes of Spartan legends Max Bullough, Darqueze Dennard, Jerel Worthy and Denicos A llen but none have seen more playing time than Rush.

This Saturday against Ohio State, Rush will etch his name into the Spartan record books with what will be his 49th career start. The game will match the record for most career starts at MSU with former linebacker Eric Gordon and offensive lineman Joel Foreman, with only one more start in the final few games, giving Rush the record all to himself.

Rush has been part of the Spartan starting lineup since his redshirt freshman season, appearing in four rivalry games against Michigan, two Big Ten Championship Games and three bowl game victories, including last year’s Rose Bowl.

When looking at the record, Rush said all of the starts came through hard work and being able to gain the trust from his coaches to keep him on the field throughout his career.

“It’s definitely an accomplishment,” Rush said. “It just kind of comes with the hard work and the toughness and making sure I’m doing my job each week. If I’m not doing my job or the coaches aren’t liking what I’m doing, obviously I wouldn’t be getting those starts so just that in itself. Just making sure I’m staying consistent.”

Rush added that staying healthy has played an obvious role in staying on the field.

players as something to look forward to. On Tuesday, Dantonio said Rush’s contribution during his time at MSU has been substantial, especially in big games like this upcoming week’s matchup against the Buckeyes.

“He’s a heart and soul type of guy,” Dantonio said. “Extremely tough guy, plays very well, plays with his hands very well, is a playmaker on the field, made a lot of plays for us throughout the years and in big games he has risen up and played extremely well.”

SILENT LEADER? Even from before he was sporting green and white on Saturdays, those close to Rush said he never needed to be the “life of the party.”

During Rush’s time at Archbishop Moeller High School, John Rodenberg served as his head coach for his junior and senior seasons, and considered it a treat to coach Rush. Rodenberg said Rush was always a quiet guy but served as a leader through his actions on and off the field.

“It was kind of funny because he was a fun guy to be around but he wasn’t that class clown or didn’t need to be the life of the party,” Rodenberg said.

“He was just a guy who commands so much respect because you see him in the weight room and see what he does on the field and that really attracts a lot of people to him.”

While Rush is known as a quiet guy when it comes to talking to the media, that isn’t always the case when he is in the locker room.

Harris has been Rush’s neighbor in the locker room since he came to MSU, and said the side of Rush that fans get to see isn’t the same way he acts around the team.

relax the guys through jokes and his upbeat attitude toward the game of football.

“He’s a really fun guy to be around, never in a bad mood,” Harris said.

“Always a cheery guy, always makes jokes so he’s really not that quiet around us which is really good because you need leaders like that to be outspoken and he’s definitely one of the top leaders on this team.”

PLAYING FOR RESPECT Saturday’s matchup against Ohio State already has added significance, but any time Rush goes up against the Buckeyes, it becomes personal.

Rush was heavily recruited by a number of Big Ten schools during his process, earning scholarship offers from Michigan, Nebraska and Purdue among many others. But Ohio State never showed much interest in the threestar defensive end recruit.

Rodenberg said during the recruiting process Rush never received a lot of attention from the Buckeyes because he wasn’t the prototypical size for a defensive end that Ohio State was looking for at the time.

“They stayed away from him,” Rodenberg said. “Ohio State wanted the biggest defensive end as they could get and I’m sure that turned him off from Ohio State.”

Combined with growing up in the state of Ohio, this week serves as one of Rush’s most anticipated games of the year. Rush holds a 2-1 record against the Buckeyes and said he always gets excited when the Scarlet and Gray are next up on the schedule.

“For myself especially, being an Ohioan it ’s definitely something more special,” Rush said. “Whenever this game comes up in the week I’m extremely excited.”

Impact 89FM nominated for radio awards Impact 89FM, WDBM (88.9-FM), MSU’s student radio station, has been nominated for four awards through the national College Radio Awards, hosted by the College Music Journal (CMJ). The conference was held in New York City last week. MSU students were recognized for their on-air talent this year at Impact 89FM. The station was nominated for four awards, including Most Creative Programming, Michelle Feghali for Music Director and Rookie of the Year, and Station of the Year. This is the third year Impact 89FM was nominated for Station of the Year.

Winners were announced at the College Music Journal New Music Marathon conference in New York City. Of the four nominations, Impact 89FM won the Rookie of the Year award.

The station’s general manager Ed Glazer said a lot has changed in the Impact studios this year.

“We have been focusing on more of the new music than the old stuff,” Glazer said. “We’re trying to focus on music that is very accessible to a broader audience.”

Glazer said the nominations have impacted the volunteers at the radio station.

“It’s very rewarding to be recognized in a national scale,” Glazer said. “We have students who go on to do amazing work; radio, TV, etc. The station gets to be a laboratory to experiment their craft and be excellent members at their work.”

Located in room G-4 in the basement of Holden Hall, Impact 89FM is broadcast live 24/7 and online.

With more than 200 volunteers involved, Impact 89FM plays a variety of music including alternative, indie and rock for the city of East Lansing.

Talk shows and music shows are also included in the programming.

As the end of the semester quickly approaches, the theatre department’s newest generation of students is preparing to debut their first departmental show at MSU. The 8th Annual Freshman Showcase, which introduces the new theatre majors, minors, and transfer students to the MSU community, is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Studio 60 Theatre located within the MSU Auditorium.

“I think this showcase is very important because a lot of theater departments don’t necessarily do this,” theatre freshman Mike Merluzzi said. “It shows the faculty and students what we are capable of in a performance setting.”

Directed by Dionne O’Dell, the play entitled Make Me Famous portrays themes of power and fame. Despite having some assistance from O’Dell and other faculty members, the performance is almost entirely student-produced.

General admission seating can be purchased for $10 at the Wharton Center Box Office or at the Studio 60 Theatre Box Office, which opens one hour prior to each performance. The showcase will run through Sunday Nov. 9.

For the 2015 school year, nine new sorority women will assume positions on the Panhellenic Council for sororities.

The election results were announced Sunday night and the new council members will take over for the current council members at the start of the spring semester.

Individuals interested in running for council positions were required to have held a previous leadership position in their chapter and be in good standing.

Panhellenic Council serves as the governing body of the 14 sororities at MSU and is responsible for everything from recruitment logistics to coordinating with the student government and putting together Greek Week.

The newly elected president of the council, who will take over for the current president, dietetics senior Alyssa Fritz, will be kinesiology junior and current Pi Beta Phi president, Rebecca Ruhlman.

Ruhlman said in a statement she feels humbled to be elected the new president of the council.

“I cannot wait to see what this journey will bring and the impact the whole council will have on the greek community,” Ruhlman said.

To be considered for the position of president, interested sorority women were required to have previously held or currently hold leadership positions within their chapter.

Newly elected executive vice president and urban and regional planning junior Lauren McGuire said assuming the position does not feel real to her yet.

“I never thought I would be on Panhellenic Council. It’s one of those things you think other people will do,” McGuire said.

McGuire said she has previously held and currently holds a leadership position in her chapter and thinks doing so has made her ready for what is to come.

“It’s prepared me to give more time for this next position,” McGuire said.

Of the 10 members, vice president of community relations and

journalism junior Faith Krogulecki is no stranger to the council.

Krogulecki currently holds the position of vice president of philanthropy and said being elected onto the council for her second year is a blessing and an honor.

“I want to help give other people the opportunity I got because I have had such a positive experience in greek life,” Krogulecki said.

Krogulecki said president was her first choice, but she is excited for what is ahead of her since her new position involves being the liaison between the greek community and the city of East Lansing.

For communications junior Alaina Jones, the position she was elected into is not foreign territory.

Jones is responsible for finances in her chapter and will serve as the new vice president of finance.

“I wanted to be able to not only serve my chapter, but the greek community as a whole,” Jones said of the position.

The new officials will be presented to the greek community and inducted on Nov. 20 at the Greek Gala.

Despite holding The Master’s College to 29 percent shooting from the field, men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo was not pleased with his team’s defense on Monday night.

“We’ve worked harder on our offense than our defense (in the offseason) for probably the first time in my career and probably the last time in my career,” Izzo said after the game on Monday night, sarcastically noting that a couple of his players would have struggled to guard his 88-year-old mother.

It was a shaky start for MSU, who allowed The Master’s College to make three of its first four 3-point attempts to start the game.

“We just didn’t guard anyone on the perimeter,” Izzo said.

Junior guard Denzel Valentine wasn’t as concerned chalking the defensive effort to “first game jitters.”

The Spartans 3-point defense tightened up from then on, holding the Mustangs to 27 percent from beyond the arc.

The Master’s College finished the game with 56 total points, which is ten points less than MSU allowed on average last season.

Izzo, who is known for his defensive acumen, isn’t too worried about the defense just yet.

“It’s something we’ve always been pretty good at, so I think we’ll get better at it,” Izzo said.

One way Izzo believes his players can improve defensively is by guarding Eron Harris, the junior transfer guard from West Virginia, in practice.

“Harris is probably the hardest guy on our team to guard. Every day Denzel (Valentine) is asking to guard him, and Trice guards him some,” Izzo said. “I thought those two played better defense this week.”

Valentine agreed defending Harris has helped him.

“I don’t think there’s a better player in the country to guard than him,” Valentine said of Harris, who averaged 17 points per game

In East Lansing, no one needs to ask who the main rival of No. 7 MSU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) is. Michigan is the clear rival, and the same thing can be said about MSU’s opponent this week in No. 13 Ohio State (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten), as the Buckeyes have a hatred as old as time for Michigan.

But is there a rivalry between MSU and OSU? According to both coaches, the budding rivalry between the Spartans and Buckeyes isn’t on that level yet.

“Our rivals right here, right now are Michigan and Notre Dame,” Dantonio said. “I would agree … there are certain football teams that you start to shape as a rivalry over the years. I think it goes back and forth

last season.

“Eron’s a great player. He can do a lot of things,” junior guard Bryn Forbes said. “He’s athletic, he can handle the ball, he can shoot the ball, he’s a very skilled player. Guarding him is a real test.”

Dantonio was responding to comments made by OSU head coach Urban Meyer on Monday, saying that the only true rival at OSU is U-M. “I would agree with (Meyer) because I read his comments,” he said. “I do think we have a lot of players playing from Ohio and I do think that makes it personal.”

Dantonio mentioned that there have been many teams that MSU has begun budding rivalries with during his tenure. He said Wisconsin, Iowa and now OSU all fit in that category.

“People were talking about us and Wisconsin … the championship game, in 2011 playing in the big game here at night and all those kinds of things,” he said. “It’s been Iowa, playing a lot of close games

St. Cloud State might be a Division II team, but they averaged 81 points per game last year and will give MSU another chance to improve its defense on Friday night.

“We got a lot of things to work on,” Izzo said. “Ninety percent of it will be our defense.”

Dantonio mentioned there is a difference between a game being a rivalry and the game being personal. There are 27 players on MSU’s roster from Ohio, which players addressed as adding a personal layer to the game, rivalry or not.

Senior safety Kurtis Drummond is from Masury, Ohio and said he wasn’t recruited at all by OSU. “It sits with you a little bit,” he said. “Coming here to coach Dantonio and his staff was the best thing that could have happened to me.

So I definitely have self-motivation, but I find self-motivation for whoever we’re playing.”

Junior quarterback Connor Cook is from Hinckley Township, Ohio and said growing up there was no division between teams the way that there is in Michigan.

“Everyone I went to high school with either goes to Ohio State, roots for Ohio State,” he said. “It’s not divided like in Michigan. In Michigan when you grow up you’re either blue or green, you grow up in Ohio and you’re a Buckeye fan.”

While he admitted there was more emotion attached to the game, Cook said he knows he has to treat the game like any other game on the schedule.

“I feel no matter the who the opponent is, once you start Big Ten play every single game is a championship game,” he said. “So this is going to be just like the Purdue game, just like the Indiana game. If we had lost to Purdue we wouldn’t be talking about this, so it’s just like any other Big Ten game. I know that sounds cliche, but truly that’s how we look at it.”

Izzo inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

A day after men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo tipped off his 20th season at MSU, he was recognized as the latest induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Izzo led the cast of eight that were announced as the 2015 Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Class on Tuesday from Spartan Stadium. The announcement was made by former MSU basketball player and 2000 national championship winner Mateen Cleaves, introducing Izzo into the Hall of Fame Class.

“It is an honor anytime you get involved with, not only the people going in this year, Aleta (Sill) and everybody, but also the people who have gone in for all the years,” Izzo said at the induction event. “I’ve been down there more than a few times for different individuals including (Mateen), Steve (Mariucci) that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame and it’s one of those rare things that you get to do that you’ll probably remember for a lifetime.”

Other inductees include former Detroit Red Wings forward Sergei Fedorov, former New York Yankees shortstop and Kalamazoo native Derek Jeter, Michigan native and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, gold medal swimmer and Livonia native Sheila Taormina, NHL AllStar forward Westland native Mike Modano and professional bowler and Dearborn native Ale-

ta Sill. Former Detroit Lion defensive lineman Doug English was selected by the hall’s Legends Council as the final member of the 2015 class.

Tuesday also marked the first time there were two women inductees in the same year in the Hall of Fame’s 59-year history.

The Hall of Fame induction is just another impressive accomplishment on Izzo’s resume.

During Izzo’s time at MSU, he has led the Spartans to six Final Fours, seven Big Ten championships, four Big Ten Tournament championships and a National Championship in 2000.

It was only fitting that Cleaves introduced Izzo into the Hall of Fame after the relationship the two have created over the years.

Izzo said being inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is a great honor but he owes a lot of his success to Cleaves in helping him build up the career he has had at MSU. “I know when they first told me (I was a nominee) I said ‘wow,’” he said. “There’s a lot of special things about it but a lot of this wouldn’t have had happened if it wasn’t for Mateen.”

“Of all the people, I often say that I owe him a lot because I wouldn’t have lasted in this job if it wasn’t for him. At the same time I’d probably be 10 years younger if it wasn’t for him.

All kidding aside, it is incredibly humbling to go in with such an incredible class.”

The official Michigan Sports Hall of Fame inductions will take place Feb. 12 during a ceremony event in Detroit.

Quick Reads Officials remind students now’s the time for a flu shot As the seasons are changing rapidly, health clinics are encouraging everyone to get the flu shot.

At MSU, the Office of the University Physician holds several flu clinics for faculty, staff members and students.

On Monday, the flu clinic was held in the Veterinary Medical Center. The vast majority of people in attendance to the clinic were faculty and staff members.

“We rarely see students,” Quality and Compliance Coordinator Elizabeth Schrauben said.

The flu clinic offers free vaccines for faculty and staff members of MSU and a fee charge of $30 for non-residents and students — which might be why some students don’t partake.

“They are advertised for staff and faculty members,” Schrauben said. “Though we definitely recommend everyone to get a flu shot.”

Schrauben said the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older.

“Receiving the flu vaccine reduces the likelihood that a person will contract influenza, and reduces the potential for flu-related illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths,” Schrauben said.

“Thousands of Americans die from flu-related illnesses every year and the best way to prevent a flu-related illness is to be vaccinated.”

Olin Health Center provides flu clinics spe-

cifically for students. According to nurse administrator at Olin Health Center Jennifer Strohmeyer, the flu clinics are held at Olin Health Center every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. “Students can schedule or simply walk in and request,” she said.

With some misconceptions, some students don’t feel the need to get vaccinated.

“I used to take it in the past, but now I don’t take it,” said Rehabilitation Counselor Education doctorate student Marwa Alsamanaltantawy. “I feel that it is not that important.

I would still get sick in the winter.”

For some students who’ve never gotten a flu shot, they’re open to the idea.

“I’ve never gotten a flu shot but I think that they’re helpful,” said political theory and constitutional democracy sophomore Danielle El-Amin. “If I got a common cold I would just take medicine. I haven’t heard about flu clinics on campus. (Compared to something like) the Ebola crisis, I do feel the pressure of getting vaccinated.”

There are several informational websites in which people can find out more about the benefits of flu shots, according to Schrauben.

“It is required for faculty and staff to get vaccinated,” Schrauben said. “Though we recommend everyone to get a flu shot. This is the season that vaccinations happen.”
