FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL
The location of my project will be on North side of Batmale Hall, on the hill between the retaining walls and stairs. I have found this area to have some of the best wind flow of all the options. My intention is to create a kinetic sculpture that expresses abstractly the idea of thought and inspiration becoming form through a human being, or me. The wind will be a metaphor for the outside world, and it will move and change the shape of the piece. It will have a sense of fragility while still maintaining structural integrity to express my own sensitivity and underlying stability. A series of blades or wings will revolve around the center. They will be interconnected so they will move together in unison, creating an opening and closing of the structure. This movement is a metaphor for the opening and closing we all do depending on our sense of safety. A couple of websites that I am referencing to help me design the blades are: http://www.designnews.com/document.asp?doc_id=230008
I watched a video on the website of Designer Tim Prentice’s to help me understand how to start connecting parts and getting them to move. http://www.timprentice.com/index_framev2.html. Then I experimented until I figured out how to make them move in the way that I want.
This is a picture from my first iteration. It moved well in the wnd but it seemed too chaotic even though it did have it was methodically organized.
On the second iteration I was able to get a neat opening and closing motion. I’m still working out the exact details of the wings of blades, but these do seem to work.
