1 2017 STAR ® ROSES AND PLANTS

DEAR FRIENDS,

I

career in horticulture is one they should consider. We are fortunate at Star® Roses and Plants in that we have around 10 of our staff who have a Bachelor’s degree in horticulture. Some of them are old, grizzled and wise; some young, energetic and smart. We even have two PhDs in our breeding division. But what will the picture be in 20 years, when those of a certain age have retired? And 20 years from then? I hope you will become engaged with Seed Your Future. The work is just beginning, but the work is important to your business and to our industry.

All the best,

Steven B. Hutton, President 2017 STAR ® ROSES AND PLANTS CATALOG

got into this business the old fashioned way — my daddy owned the Company. This can be an absolutely horrible career path or a magically wonderful one. For me it was the latter. Dick and I were good at different things and enjoyed different parts of the Company’s operations, so we never got in each other’s way. He was smart, but more importantly, he was wise. And I was lucky. As I enter my 39th year as a full-time employee at Star® Roses and Plants — after many summer and holiday jobs here over my youth — I think, Yikes! What if Dick had owned a pest exterminating service? Or a bait shop? I can’t imagine having gone any other direction in my career, not just because I’ve been doing this for so long, but because it has been so richly and deeply rewarding. And I have to think that a career in horticulture would have never occurred to me had I not been born into horticulture. I didn’t study horticulture in college; I learned it on the job, but many of my informal “professors” had studied horticulture. This has set me to wondering where the next generations of horticulturists will come from. As we all know, the horticulture departments in most of the great universities are mere shadows of their former selves. Enrollment in horticulture programs has continued to decline, in some cases dramatically so, which causes university administrators to further cut horticulture programs, which results in lower enrollment, which leads to further cuts, which… well, you get the picture. Fortunately, something is being done. Seed Your Future is a joint effort of a number of associations in the broad world of horticulture, including our own trade association, AmericanHort. The co-chairs of the initiative are Anna Ball, president and CEO of Ball® Horticultural Company which (as of September 30, 2015) owns Star® Roses and Plants, and my friend and the executive director of Longwood Gardens, Paul Redman. The basic strategy of the program is to work with students in grades K-12 to expose them to horticulture and, over time, to show them that a

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

O

ur in-house breeding division at Star® Roses and Plants is a team of top-breeders and scientists applying modern techniques in plant genetics to the development of industry-worthy and consumerfriendly ornamental flowering plants. Focusing mostly on the development of roses and other high-value woody shrubs and perennials, they work under the same roof as the Star® Roses and Plants corporate headquarters in Pennsylvania allowing for year-round collaboration and involvement from all departments. The breeding team supplies a steady pipeline of new varieties to Star® Roses and Plants for evaluation and trials each year. Our breeders and scientists utilize a variety of techniques including traditional breeding, embryo rescue, mutagenesis and molecular biology to develop hybrid populations for screening and identification of new cultivars for introduction. Following our acquisition by Ball® Horticultural, we can now collaborate with a team of world-class scientists and access facilities at Ball® Helix that will further enhance our abilities to develop varieties. Furthermore, our in-house breeding division collaborates with breeders and scientists from around the world in seeking solutions to diseases that threaten our industry, such as crown gall and rose rosette. Selections from our in-house breeding division undergo a rigorous multi-region, multi-year trialing program coordinated by the New Products Department at Star® Roses and Plants. The program continually expands as they upgrade and develop more rigorous methods to ensure the excellence of all plants introduced by Star® Roses and Plants. The most successful products launched from this program include The Knock Out® Family of Roses and Drift® Roses. The program is successful for key reasons: • Maintaining close relationships with the breeders, both professional and amateur. • National testing in all product classes; once we confirm interest among our internal testing locations, plants are distributed to other nurseries, universities, arboretums and botanic gardens for testing in other regions.

• Careful comparison to existing market offerings, making selections that are distinct improvements over what is available. We are excited to be integrating with Ball® Ornamentals this year and the addition of a large new pipeline of diverse genetics to evaluate and bring to market in the years to come.
