ROSES & P L A NTS

Conard-Pyle

Dear Friends, I used to get a lot of books for Christmas, and they were always my favorite gifts. Now, because I read newspapers, magazines and books on my iPad, I get very few. But one of the few I did get this past Christmas was “The Roots of My Obsession,” a slim paperback containing short pieces by 30 well-known horticultural writers on the topic of the roots of their obsession with plants and gardening. It’s easy and fun to read--you should get a copy. The book set me to thinking about the root of my own obsession with plants and gardening, an obsession that deepens and broadens as time passes. I didn’t have to ponder long before figuring out that the root of my plant obsession is . . . people. Because I grew up in the nursery business, exposure to the world of horticulture came early and often, and for the most part left only a faint mark. I have the usual fond childhood memories of gardening with parents and grandparents, but the fond ones are outnumbered by the memories of dreading another minute spent at the end of a hoe or shovel in the dripping heat of summer. But because my parents were gracious and generous hosts, our house was often filled with plant people from the States and around the world, and it was a fascination with these exotic people, breeders and growers of exotic (in the general sense of the word) plants, that hooked me on the world of horticulture. When I grew up, West Grove, PA was very rural, very quiet and very predictable. A visit from an English or Irish rose breeder, with their wonderful stories told in their sophisticated accents, was for me a voyage to an unknown continent. German, Japanese and Dutch nurserymen stayed with us, and my little world got bigger and more interesting with each visit. I remember well a visit from the Meilland family, the famous rose breeders from France, when I was seven or eight years old--Alain Meilland brought his mother, Louisette, and his grandfather and stayed for some days with us. Alain spoke perfect English, Louisette none at all and his grandfather very little. But the days were filled with a conversation that never ended, and was somehow understood by all. I was mesmerized by their quirky habits, their funny shoes and how their hands were never still when they talked; it made me want to go to France. Which I did with my new wife, Ann, over 35 years ago, to work as an undocumented --ahem-greenhouse worker at Meilland International. And the enduring love and knowledge I have for roses, French culture and the French language owes much of its existence to the guys I worked with in the greenhouses--Gaston, Yvan, Ton-ton, Abdellah and Jacky. And to this day, when I am walking through our greenhouses and research fields, I’m reminded that all these new plants are here because of the people who bred them -- people I admire and respect and whose company I enjoy at least as much as their plants. So, that’s the root of my obsession: people. And yours? All the best,

Steven B. Hutton, President

research & Development Testing and evaluation of all Star® Roses and Plants continues to expand as we upgrade and develop newer and more rigorous methods to ensure the excellence of all plants we introduce. Over the years we have introduced many award-winning plants including The Meserve Hollies and more than 30 varieties that have received the All American Rose Selection Award. Those include the first for a miniature rose (Debut™), and the first for a landscape rose (Bonica®). More recent winners include The Knock Out® Rose and Sunshine Daydream, the first Grandiflora to win the award under no-spray testing conditions. Additionally, Francis Meilland® was the only Hybrid Tea to win the AARS award under these no-spray trials.

a rigorous selection process Since our founding, our philosophy when introducing new plants has been based on two principles. First, we maintain very close relationships with hybridizers who entrust us to evaluate their seedlings. Second, we maintain a superior testing facility to ensure that only top-performing plants are introduced. Star® Roses and Plants works with professional and amateur hybridizers to introduce their plants to the market. This commitment goes back to the mid-1930’s when Conard-Pyle partnered with Meilland International, and later with Kathleen Meserve, who single-handedly redefined what Hollies are in North American gardens. Since 2007, our in-house breeding division, NovaFlora® has supplied us with a rich source of new varieties. Those enduring relationships, as well as more recent ones with Will Radler, breeder of The Knock Out® Rose and Jim Sproul, the creator of Eyeconic® Roses, highlight our commitment to bring new, exciting plants to market. We operate full testing facilities on both the East and West coasts. Roses must perform well in all of our locations in order to be introduced to market. We also conduct extensive production trials to make sure that each new potential introduction performs well on its own roots, in containers as well as in the garden. This sets a very high standard that is unmatched in the industry. In roses, we evaluate and test over 1,000 potential new varieties from all over the world at all of our locations. They undergo an extensive three-year trial period with no spraying for pests or diseases, and are subject to preliminary market feedback. Between 25 to 30 varieties survive the process. At this point, our experts determine whether or not to enter the roses into a two-year trial at 15 gardens located across the Unites States. We organize these trial sites internally and make sure to visit them every year to see how our roses are doing. On average, 12 to 15 potential new releases are tested each year. Following the results of these nationwide trials, usually 5 to 7 new roses make it to the market. We also evaluate our new perennials and woody plants along similar rigorous evaluation processes. Every year, breeders entrust us with hundreds of their creations that undergo the same thorough process that results in popular releases such as Thuja Fire Chief™, Veronica Moody Blues, Penstemon Rock Candy™ and Buxus ‘Highlander’. Award winning Carefree Wonder™, Carefree Delight™, Carefree Spirit™ and of course, The Knock Out® Rose, are some of the most popular graduates of this very difficult process. We continually strive to work even harder to increase the performance and quality of our new introductions to better meet the higher expectations that consumers have come to expect from Star Roses® and Plants, the leader in bringing new plants to North American gardens today. own root roses An own root rose is a superior product to a budded rose. For the past five years, we have been extensively trialing all potential new introductions on their own roots. A rose grown on its own roots makes a better product for many reasons: 1. Y our own root rose will be more hardy than a budded rose. The process of budding weakens the crown, making it vulnerable to extreme winter temperatures. 2. Y ou will never have to deal with pruning out unwanted root stock suckers. Your new rose will always be true to type. Have you ever had a yellow rose suddenly bloom red? This is most likely from the understock sending up shoots which may overpower your rose if left unchecked.

3. Your own root rose will be more bushy and shapely than a budded rose over time. Since it is growing on its own roots, it will naturally send up shoots from the soil, resulting in a fuller plant with more blooms. 4. Since the material we use for production is virus indexed, this helps to eliminate the spread of virus which can so easily be transmitted through the process of budding.

virus indexing Since the 1980’s all our new rose introductions are tested at the Plant Foundation Services of The University of California, Davis. This ensures that the material we use for production is free of virus. We also use the same approach at Oregon State University with our perennials and woody ornamentals. Maintaining virus indexed material is critical to ensuring that plants propagated commercially will perform to their best potential.

Our superior testing program ensures that only the best survive. www.starroses and plants.com |

Inside the greenhouse at Star® Roses and Plants in West Grove, PA

Facilities The Star® Roses and Plants liner production greenhouse became functional in the Fall of 2008. The greenhouse is a Rough Brothers design with 16’ gutter height. There are three growing zones for production that total 144,000 sq ft. In these areas over one million 15-cell and 32-cell plugs are produced which include roses as well as many other proprietary woody plants and perennials. Our genetics are grown to the highest quality standards that customers have come to know from Star® Roses and Plants. Irrigation is applied through twelve GTI common sense booms which are programmed to deliver the exact amount of water and fertilizer that the plants need. Ritter System side walls and roofs open and close from a programmed Argus computer system that continuously monitors environmental conditions. Cutting edge production practices include Lean Flow labor systems, mechanization, and biological pest management. Our propriety ornamental plants are shipped throughout North America and Canada. In an attempt to reduce pesticide usage in the greenhouse we have implemented an IPM program of regular scouting and record keeping. Part of our IPM effort includes the release of beneficial insects and nematodes. Currently we utilize banker plants and several species of predatory wasps for the control of Aphids throughout the greenhouse. On our rose crop we release beneficial mites to keep two-spotted mites in check. In our breeding lab we use Orius, predatory mites and nematodes to help control Western Flower Thrips. All of our growing zones receive drenches of nematodes to control Fungus gnat and Shore Fly larvae. In 2012 we began working with Sustainable Energy Financing, LLC to develop energy efficiency systems which were later partially funded through the USDA Rural Energy for America Program. In 2013 phase one, a Wadsworth Push/Pull curtain system was installed and made operational. In 2014 phase two, upgraded energy efficient hot water boiler heaters will be installed. The combined effect of both energy efficiency measures will result in an energy savings of an estimated 35.4% Additional environmental benefits result from the use of the energy efficient technology, including mitigating the combustion of almost 2,700 MMBtu of propane, and carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere. This project is another step in Star® Roses and Plants long term growth strategy, which emphasizes efficient and effective energy practices that serve as an example for other greenhouse businesses.

background and history NovaFlora® LLC was founded by Dr. Michael S. Dobres in 1993, to apply modern techniques in plant genetics to the development of consumer-friendly and environmentallyfriendly ornamental flowering plants. In 1995, NovaFlora® entered into an exclusive agreement with Star® Roses and Plants to develop roses and other high-value ornamental shrubs and perennials. In 2006, NovaFlora® moved to Star® Roses and Plants’ West Grove, Pennsylvania campus, thereby consolidating its office, laboratory and greenhouse operations in a single commercial site. At the end of 2011, NovaFlora® merged into Star® Roses and Plants. This signals the evolution of Star® Roses and Plants from an introducer to a breeder of new varieties. NovaFlora®’s team of highly trained breeders and technicians will continue to supply a steady pipeline of new varieties to Star® Roses and Plants for evaluation and trials each year. Its recent successes include Popcorn Drift®, the Veronica Moody Blues series, Coreopsis Crème Caramel™ and Nepeta Junior Walker™. Look for more exciting releases in the coming years. We are also committed to training the next generation of plant breeders. We regularly recruit student interns to train in our greenhouses and labs. Students from Longwood Gardens and the University of Delaware are a common sight at NovaFlora®, but we have also hosted international students from as far afield as Costa Rica and Honduras.

consuming and delicate process is called “embryo-rescue”. It is reserved for crosses between distantly related species. It allows us to combine characteristics that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. In other cases we simply want to tweak an existing variety, perhaps make it more compact or alter its color. In that case we will use gamma-ray mutagenesis to induce genetic changes that only affect one or two desired characteristics.

breeding and technology At NovaFlora® we blend the old with the new. We use many of the time-tested techniques of traditional breeding combined with a broad range of modern techniques including embryo-rescue, mutagenesis and DNA fingerprinting. DNA fingerprinting is used for verification of new hybrids. A form of botanical forensics, this allows us to confirm rare and difficult hybrids and to more effectively protect our intellectual property. To stay on the cutting edge, NovaFlora® collaborates with breeders and scientists from around the world to improve, refine and develop new methods. We speak at and attend research conferences to tell others about our work and hear about the latest methods and discoveries in plant breeding and genetics.

about breeding With traditional breeding, pollen from one flower is dusted onto another flower. The process is repeated thousands of times and the seeds are germinated and screened for new and interesting varieties. Not all crosses yield viable seed, so we often have to intervene. A few weeks after pollination we remove the developing seed and transfer it from the greenhouse to the laboratory. There the young embryo is removed from the developing seed and placed on nutrient agar Petri plates. Nutrients in the agar help the embryo develop into a seedling. After a few weeks it can be returned to the greenhouse and will develop into a plant. This time

protection

proteccion

• Keep in cool, moist environment. • Do not freeze.

• Mantenga las plantas en un lugar fresco y húmedo. • No las congele.

• Do not leave in sun. • Keep box and plastic liner closed when not in use to prevent the plants from drying out. • Dry roots will delay top plant growth.

• No las deje expuestas al sol. • Para evitar que se sequen, mantenga cerradas la caja y la bolsa de plástico. • Las raíces secas causan un crecimiento más lento de la parte superior de las plantas.

trim roots

recorte de raices

• Use sharp clean, pruning shears. • ONLY trim tips of roots if necessary. We work hard to grow a healthy large root system, so minimal, if any, root trimming is needed.

trim back tops

• Use sharp, clean pruning shears. • Cut canes leaving 4-6” from bud union. • Cut each cane on a slight angle. • Low top pruning encourages strong bottom breaks.

planting

• Insert plant and fill pot to very top. • The graft knob should be about 1” above the soil line. • It is alright to force the whole root system into the pot.

watering

• Thoroughly water in your roses. • Compact soil and remove air pockets. • Keep soil moist. • New roses require additional watering. • Overhead water is reccommended until the rose is leafed out. • In dry and windy conditions or in areas of low humidity overhead watering may be required several times a day UNTIL the rose is leafed out. Then allow leaves to dry before sunset. This will help prevent many diseases.

2015 Roses

The Pretty in Pink Eden® Rose

Star® Roses and Plants has been a pioneer in the field of plant development and introduction for more than 100 years. From the introduction of the famous Peace rose in 1945 to the revolutionary Knock Out® Family of Roses and Drift® Groundcover Roses, Star® Roses and Plants continues to work with hybridizers all over the world to bring the most unique and beautiful rose, perennial and woody varieties to market.

In 2015, we are excited to introduce five new roses. Among these varieties is a fragrant, bi-colored hybrid tea, an addition to the popular Look-A-Likes® series, a climbing Romantica® Rose and two landscape shrub roses. One of these shrubs is the first rose to be created from the combined breeding efforts of Will Radler and Meilland International. The other is so exceptionally disease-resistant – you’d swear it was a Knock Out® Rose!

The Look-A-Likes® Apple Dapple Rose

Icecap™ displays a dense flush of pure white flowers on a compact, rounded shrub. Excellent repeat blooming and resistance to many common rose diseases is observed. It has been one of the most consistent performers in our independent trials conducted at trial sites around the country. Icecap™ is the first introduction created from the combined breeding efforts of Will Radler, Breeder of the Knock Out® Rose and Jacques Mouchotte of Meilland International, France.

Look-A-Likes® Apple Dapple is covered in a blanket of white flowers reminiscent of apple blossoms in early spring. It grows well on its own roots and is tolerant to high soil pH. It will continuously bloom throughout the season and is very resistant to rust and mildews. It is a large groudcover rose and would be well suited for placement towards the front of beds and borders, or planted en masse.

This rose is an exceptionally disease resistant shrub rose. Flowers open shell pink with a yellow center, then fade to pastel pink. Flowers clean very well. Plant habit it very uniform and rounded. Blooms continually and consistently from spring through frost. This was the top scorer for aesthetics and disease resistance from our independent trials conducted across the country over a period of two years.

Pretty In Pink Eden® exhibits all the same great qualities of the Eden® Rose, but is deep pink in color. It has slightly more petals than Eden® and is more fragrant. This climbing Romantica® Rose performs well on its own roots and is just as vigorous and resistant to disease as its parent.

A unique rose with densely flowered clusters of small red blooms with a white eye. Nice habit remains low to the ground, requiring little maintenance. Its first flush of blooms is stunning, and will repeat bloom with dead heading. Plant it towards the front of mixed borders where other flowering perennials will cover it later in the season.

The Look-A-Likes® Phloxy Baby Rose is a Polyantha hybrid from the hybridizer of The Knock Out® Rose. It displays extremely good disease resistance and is more upright than most polyantha roses. It would be perfect for use as a hedge. Phloxy Baby produces more than fifty blooms per stem and attracts bees.

Fire ‘n’ Ice™

Florist Roses have refined blooms for exceptional cutting and displays. For more than half a century, Star® Roses and Plants has introduced some of the most successful roses in the florist trade. These seven unique, vibrant colors are guaranteed to stand out.

The world renowned Meilland International bred this one-of-a-kind Hybrid Tea. The velvety texture of the petals and unique color will stand out in your garden.

Fire ‘n’ Ice™ ‘Arofiric’

Although only a few of the thoroughbreds introduced over the years have what it takes to survive outside of the perfect conditions found in the grower’s greenhouse, the varieties that do make it into the garden trade provide some of the most refined blooms to be found.

This bi-toned red and white rose is one of the most popular Hybrid Teas ever bred for fresh cut flower production. More resistant to mildew than most florist roses.

The Green Romantica® Rose ‘Meimarkize’ PP#19140

Specifically bred for its green hues, this florist rose will perform best in cool sunny climates where the color will be most intense. A true long stemmed Hybrid Tea, it needs to be cut fairly open to maximize its life in the vase.

The gold standard for yellow Hybrid Teas. Unrivaled for its deep color that never seems to fade. With its perfect, high-centered form and deep green foliage, Oregold is a rose that’s hard to beat.

Papa Meilland®

Peace

Paradise Found™

Papa Meilland®

Peace

The long, strong stems and velvety deep red blooms have a long vase life, making it a popular Hybrid Tea for rose cutting gardens. This exhibition rose won the Alexander Gamble Fragrance Medal from the American Rose Society in 1974. It was also elected into the World Federation of Rose Societies Hall of Fame in 1988.

The world’s most famous rose, in brilliant yellow and pink, was first introduced to the U.S. by Conard-Pyle 60 years ago and is more popular today than when it was first introduced. This stunning Hybrid Tea was voted into the Rose Hall of Fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 1976 and was later voted Rose of the 20th Century.

The pink color is mixed with a hint of salmon, making the color look very much like the feathers of a Pink Flamingo. This is a rose with much better winter hardiness and disease tolerance than most others in the Grandiflora category. It’s also much more compact than most in its class, which makes it ideal for a smaller garden or for use in a large container.

This rose was so unique when it was introduced that a whole new class was created to accommodate its magnificence. A truly regal Grandiflora with a perfect combination of strength and beauty that has withstood the test of time. Voted into the Rose Hall of Fame in 1979.

This white climber blooms heavily in the spring and will rebloom throughout the season. It has exceptionally clean foliage and a very full flower similar to the English roses. It is hardy in zone 5 climates, but may perform more like a large shrub than a climber. Works everywhere, especially in black spot prone areas like the south.

Its dark velvety, very fragrant flowers have seduced gardeners and rosarians alike for more than half a century. There is a bit of mystery about the Italian hybridizer of this very popular rose as he is almost impossible to find references for and his name is usually misspelled in most rose catalogs – Malandrone.

One of the best climbers to come out of our testing grounds of Pennsylvania. Extremely underrated on the west coast so far – maybe because its great disease resistance and winter hardiness features are less appreciated. It is still one of the most prolific bloomers and will hold well in the heat as well as in the vase.

A continuous kaleidoscope of ever-changing yellow to scarlet back to orange and carmine has made this rose a classic in mild climates. The green apple soft color of the foliage softens a bit the bold-in-your-face statement made by the profusion of vivid, almost indescribable blooms.

Zéphirine Drouhin

This climber from the breeder of Knock Out® is sure to become a favorite. Winter hardy zone 4, it is one of the most floriferous climbers we have ever introduced. The fire engine red color is non-fading and can take the heat. In the fall the foliage turns deep burgundy red and the plants are covered with bright orange hips.

Not sure why this rose has become so popular more than a century after it was introduced. Maybe it’s the strong bourbon fragrance? The old-fashioned blooms? Or the fact it blooms well in shade? Or that it is thornless? It couldn’t be the name, could it? You can count on Zéphirine Drouhin’s thornless canes to produce an abundance of fragrant cerise-pink flowers reliably in spring and fall.
