sport Swans to defy beefed up Eagles GEELONG Football League plays the remaining five games of round one on Saturday after Colac defeated West Saints in the opener last weekend. The league’s reputation as one of the best in the state was further advanced over the summer months, with four players drafted to AFL and VFL sides and the recruitment of ex-AFL players Brad Ottens and Ryan Gamble to Newtown. Reigning premier Bell Park lost Tom Couch to Melbourne and Jackson Sheringham to Geelong. Their loss will make things hard but new coaches Tim Sheringham and Ben Armstrong remain optimistic. Other new coaches to the league are Matt Kershaw at Lara and Jason Orr at St Mary’s, while South Barwon has named Josh McCann and James Garvey as co-coaches. Russell Robertson stays at Joeys for another year and all other clubs have stuck to last year’s coaches, namely Steve Clark at Leopold, Matt Cavendon at St Alban’s, Peter Riccardi at North Shore, Grant Tanner at Grovedale, Doug Scott at West Saints and Matt Gibson at Colac.

FRANK MASON Expectations are high at all clubs but round one will soon sort out who has recruited well and but in the hard yards over the pre-season. The match of the day is at McDonalds Reserve where South Barwon hosts Newtown. Newtown boasts the recruits of the year but it’s yet to be seen whether that will convert into a premiership winning side. South Barwon is always hard to beat and will provide a good test. River retreat provides sheltered action for blown away anglers On the bite BRIAN LONG WEATHER over Easter made fishing challenging but anglers who applied a little effort reported reasonable captures. Paul West and son Jai tucked out of the wind just upstream of the Shannon Ave bridge to land seven magnificent size carp, the best better than 5kg, along with two tench both around 800g. Martin Shaw also fished the Barwon River, casting Oar Gee Lil Ripper lures upstream of Pollocksford Bridge where small redfin were dominant. By day’s end Martin had landed three redfin around 600g along with a respectable brown trout close to 1kg. Massive seas limited surf angling quiet but Brian Packer found a quiet location at Lorne just down from the hospital. Fishing late in the evening, Brian’s catch included flathead, salmon and a number of quality whiting to 48cm. Paul Dennis cast lures from the rocks at Stony Creek near Lorne where he found a nice shoal of salmon. Most were under 1kg but the sheer numbers made for exciting action. Young angler Tyson Faull was rewarded for casting small shallow-running bibbed lures in the Anglesea River along the shallow flats downstream of the Great Ocean Road Bridge. Tyson landed and released nine bream along with any number of small salmon. Paul Hunter fished Point Lonsdale Pier a number of times in the past week for generally lean pickings. However, the salmon showed up twice for Paul to

Dane Veldhuis fished Swan Bay for flathead, which was great choice since he caught and released four fish between 55cm and 65cm. Dane reported any number of garfish also responded to his berley. Neil Fitzgerald also found plenty of garfish in the bay, which he happily caught and proceeded to use as live baits to catch two nice gummy shark of

around 5kg each just on dark. Fishing soft plastics on the outer harbour spoil grounds was difficult in the strong wind but Terry Stirling persisted, lading a fantastic bag of fish. He caught 16 flathead and three snapper, with a follow-up session the next day returning a similar number of fish, including the only one he kept, a snapper of 3.4kg. Salmon averaging close to 1kg were found in

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour, although they were difficult to locate in choppy conditions. Stewart Doyle found them holding up close to Royal Geelong Yacht Club where he used his Hobie to fish the protected side of the marina for about a dozen salmon on soft plastics. Snapper captures slowed but were still available. The best action was in the outer-harbour, especially from the southern tip of Wilson Spit. Matthew Alsop landed a beauty of 4.5kg on an ultra-light soft plastics outfit late last week before the strong wind arrived. Joel Hunt also landed two snapper of 4.5kg each but on pilchard while fishing in front of Sands Caravan Park. Deep Lake remained a fantastic option for trout, with Powerbait accounting for the best captures. Lake Tooliorook produced trout over 2kg on a variety of methods. Trolling with Tassie Devils was successful, while with bait anglers found both Powerbait and local minnow effective. Peter Hamon and son Jack returned with four magnificent rainbows from Tooliorook, taken on Powerbait and worms. Redfin have also been fantastic at this location, with local minnow and ice jigs working. Ballarat’s Lake Wendoree should improve as the weather settles, with rainbow trout from 500g to 1kg common. Bait anglers have been the most successful, with both lure and fly set to come into there own as the water cleans. This weekend’s late-afternoon high tides should suit the surf either side of Lorne. Fish the deeper-water rock platforms with metal baitfish-profile lures for salmon. Freshwater anglers should try Deep Lake with Powerbait or worms off the bottom near the boat ramp or directly below the pines.
