$1.4m youth cafe By Monique Kuzeff WITH the recent opening of the $1.39 million state-of-the-art Retro Lane Cafe on Friday, the Border’s youth once again have a safe and central place to meet and hang-out in Albury. It’s been almost two years since the Retro Youth Cafe on Dean Street closed to make way for MAMA, but now youth are able to utilise the newest development to their advantage. The Retro Lane Cafe, which is positioned beside the Library Museum and faces QEII Square, brings many opportunities for youth to engage in. Friday gigs will once again be hosted and young people will be able to get involved in after-school programs and workshops, homework and study assistance, resume writing, and other activities To Albury MP Greg Aplin the new cafe would be an important addition to the city’s history in years to come, supporting young people in “following their creative dreams”. “Here you are building an important history, you are adding a chapter to the life of the former Retro Youth Cafe, squeezed as it was,” Mr Aplin said. “Now it is up to your term to build this place into a place where you want to be - a place where you’ll make new friends. “I hope it will be a place where young people can talk freely about their hopes, about their ambitions and how to deal with human prejudices and fear.” For Harry Reid, Retro Youth Management Committee member, the Retro Lane Cafe provides a space where he and his friend can come together, enjoy the numerous programs on offer and “connect and interact” with other young people alike. “This space provides youth services with the unique opportunity to connect and interact with young people in a vibrant environment, which of course of-

Mack said in his opening speech. “It has been a passion of our council and the youth council that has made this vision arrive. “This cafe is all-inclusive aiming to be a hub of engagement for all young people while offering an alternative and unique cafe in central Albury that is open to all.” The cafe is open Monday to Saturday from 10am. The return of Friday night gigs will push the cafe’s closing time to 9pm.
