EDITOR’S NOTE

I

have noticed guests of different backgrounds that come together to our toastmaster fortnightly meetings. Some guests become toastmasters with the hope of a new beginning. The mentor-mentee program encourages members new & old, to keep together and help each other achieve their personal goals. The eventual success of a toastmaster club is determined by the satisfaction gained by the members of working together under the guidelines of Toastmasters International to achieve their goals. This month’s issue is no different. It is a culmination of the efforts taken by the members themselves to share their thoughts and experiences. To begin with, you got to make yourself more appealing. You need to reflect on what you have experienced over the last few years. This reflection would involve your mind and body to help you learn more about yourself. It would not hurt to seek the guidance of the more seasoned toastmasters. Then apply the learning and share your story to the world outside. And some day, you might just be entrusted with

the responsibility of bringing people together from all over the world. All this and much more to share in this issue! Along with Meesha Kapoor’s experience we have Vijay Menon who has injected a new look into this compilation. I thank you both for the time & effort in helping put this newsletter together. Hence it all makes sense when Henry Ford quoted,“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success” Do enjoy reading this newsletter! Don't forget to write in your feedback. Regards,

Siddartha Hegde

regret, when thinking back reminds us to be careful in the future. Most offer some lessons that we have learnt, good or otherwise. This aids in our being aware, filing those little details in the deeper recesses of the mind, and replaying them at appropriate moments. Stepping back from being hamsters in a wheel and taking time out to reflect might well represent the sole window of opportunity during the year to gaze at the past. None of the events and happenings might be significant milestones when viewed in isolation. Yet, they are all part of that jigsaw of life and form those tiny elements that we carry forward with us. Some call it baggage, others term it karma, yet others term it memories. Viewed differently, sharing snippets about the year gone by allows us the opportunity – even an excuse, perhaps – to re-establish contact with friends (and family) with whom we do not interact frequently. An update of sorts – I am ok, hope you are ok. Making resolutions is fine. That’s what many people do. And, breaking those resolutions might not mean 6

much – there will be other opportunities. On the other hand, stepping back in reflection, however briefly, might actually be a rewarding, and, perhaps, a pleasurable exercise. For, it gives that unique opportunity to ponder on what we could have done better, which, in turn, would help us whenever we encounter a similar situation in the future. And, it also provides brief moments of happiness whenever we cast our mind back to events that uplifted our life in some significant way. I used to mail an “annual report” to members of my family and several friends on the last day of December each year. Some appreciated it and thanked me for the updates. For me, it was a nice experience. Gave me reason to smile as a new year dawned.

MEMBERS SPEAK 1 > 30 Mir Irfan Hussain CC, CL Givers Gain! You might have heard of this clichÊ many times in life. Whether you have experienced it or not, this sketch clearly proves the point. Once I saw a person open his palm for the sake of giving. I realized that his five fingers had the power of multiplying into 6 times or more. This one simple philosophy depicts the strength that lies beneath an individual’s selfless drive to give. So, when was the last time you gave a single Dirham away in charity to someone in need? When was the last time you gave a worthy advice to someone deserving? If you can and haven't done so, what are you waiting for? Simply Get Up; Get Giving & realize the multiplier effect!!

MY TOASTMASTERS WORLD

Usman Mufti

My journey with toastmasters began in February 2009 at the Abu Dhabi chapter 1950. This was the mother chapter of all toastmaster clubs to be created in the UAE. I was introduced to this world by DTM Nagabhushan Balaji. Mr. Balaji’s reference came through my brother Kinaan Mufti, who had worked with him in Dubai First during those years. For a long time I had searched for such a forum, where I could improve my speaking & communication skills. Like many people, I too lacked confidence. Trust me, the day I got to know about this club from my brother, I could not resist. Immediately I asked him to refer me to the right person. I wanted to grab the opportunity & become a part of such a forum to improve my confidence. When I attended the meeting the very first day as a guest, I realized what I had missed all these years by not joining at an early age. I was welcomed with warm greetings from friendly unknown faces. The Excom members told me that it’s never too late. Try to spend time with this club. The very same day, I completed all the formalities of registration with the Toastmasters Club. I had finally become a member of that prestigious club. It has been over a year now that I have learnt a lot from toastmasters. With improved confidence levels, I find myself being able to share my thoughts with people more comfortably than ever before. It is indeed a slow process. This journey has been an enduring one for me. I do hope that this journey helps in enhancing my leadership qualities in being able to take up challenging roles to respond responsibly to tough commitments that require people to work together.
