POSITION OF INTEREST: GRADUATE INTERN After performing an internshi p at engineering firm SCEPROJECT ive gained an appreciation, better understanding and permanent interest in structural engineering and the roles engineers perform in a building project all the way through to construction. Initally, my interest in building structures started with my thesis (Japanese Structural Seismic Risk Prevention Techniques & Its Potential Performance in the Caribbean), where during it’s creation I firmly understood that in developing countries of high seismic activity such as my own, structural engineering ought to be a priority. Though educated in Architecture and do not currently possess the skills of an engineer, at the moment I very much prefer being in an engineering environment where I could be of useful assistance and develop a level of competence in structural engineering.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Currently I am progressing in BIM through Revit, a conscious decision as not only does the process present a unified representation of all the disci plines and a better understanding of the design and construction of the building, but with The Italian Baratono Commission in the near future it will be skill of absolute necessity. As the commision dictates that as of 2025, BIM will be mandatory for all projects regardless of complexity. In my most recent efforts, at SCEPROJECT, I made the request be involved in a BIM project, which was my first and I modelled in Revit the facade for Cubo di Blloku, a Stefano Boeri project’’ in Tirana Albania and also a staircase for a Kengo Kuma project in Rovoreto.

Along with skills in BIM and an understanding of building design and construction, I intend on learning programPIUARCH (MILAN - ITALY) ming languages starting with Python, to be able to tell the computer exactly what I want it to perform. I even ARCHITECT - INTERN met personally with Peter Debny, a chartered structural engineer of Arup, at a BIM event in Bolgona to express ‘COLLABORATED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PLANS, SECTIONS AND ELEVATIONS. THE DRAFTING my concerns after attending his webinar on structural analysis using the oasys software. He informed me that the OF CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS, ANALYSIS OF ARCHITECTURAL STANDARDS AND 3D MODELING most common language used by the majority of enginners is Python and experienced programmers lean towards C# and C++. This is great as now I understand that how I intend to move forward is line with the company’s 2018 SCEPROJECT (MILAN - ITALY) culture. Schwarzman College of Computing, a building for the new WORKSHOPS: college will be opened in 2022. Architecture and Engineering Students who are“duo-lingual with a programming language”will greatly benefit from this major change. This is where and how I want to position myself as an 2013 OUT OF THE CITY - RE-TERRITORIALIZATION OF THE HUMAN HABITAT AT THE NET-CITY SCALE Architect and I believe at Arup I can best move forward. LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF TIRANA, THE BLLOKU CUBE IS THE NEW MULTI-PURPOSE CENTER DESIGNED BY STEFANO BOERI ARCHITETTI. THE PROJECT - CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION, JOINS THE TOWN PLANNING OF THE ALBANIAN CAPITAL TIRANA 2030. THE FACADE CONSISTS OF A CURTAIN WALL, AND A SECOND SKIN OF ANODIZED ALUMINUM SHIELDING CONSISTING OF SQUARE MODULES OF 110 CM ON EACH SIDE, WITH THREE-DIMENSIONAL TRIANGLES WELDED INSIDE THEM.

A STUDENT RESIDENCE IN THE ACADEMIC FIELD OF URBAN AGRICULTURAL TRAINING, THIS REINTERPRETATION OF THE ABANDONED CASCINA CASA NUOVE”REJUVENATES THE OLD SITE WITH ADDED AGRICULTURAL SERVICES AND AN INTEGRATED COMMUNAL FUNCTION. IT IS DROUGHT RESISTANT WHICH MAKES IT AN EXCELLENT REPLACEMENT FOR STAPLE CROPS UNDER THREAT FROM CLIMATE CHANGE, GIVING IT THE POTENTIAL TO FEED MILLIONS. WHICH MAKES IT AN EXCELLENT REPLACEMENT FOR STAPLE CROPS UNDER THREAT FROM CLIMATE CHANGE GIVING IT THE POTENTIAL TO FEED MILLIONS, AS LOW WATER AVAILABILITY IS THE MOST SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINT ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. IT ACHIEVES WHAT FARMERS NEED IN FOOD PRODUCTION WHEN FACING A LOT OF CHALLENGES UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE. THE COVERING IS DESIGNED AS A KINETIC AND INTRICATELY TRANSFORMABLE SHELL STRUCTURE, POUTED WITH PHOTO VOLTAIC AND THEREFORE ABLE TO RESPOND TO SUBTLE CHANGES IN DAYLIGHT. THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE CANOPY BEING DEVELOPED AS APERTURES SET WITHIN DIRECTIONAL FUNNELS IS ABLE TO REDIRECT BREEZES AND WIND AND AIRFLOWS APPROPRIATELY TO THE SPACE BENEATH. THIS INTELLIGENT AND REACTIVE SKIN IS ALSO ABLE TO OPEN AND CLOSE ACCORDING TO NEED, THEREFORE REPELLING RAINFALL AND ‘SHUTTING DOWN’ DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. AN ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION TO LOWER THE USAGE OF HVAC SYSTEMS IT IS BEING DEVELOPED BY ASYMPTOTE ARCHITECTURE IN COLLABORATION WITH STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS KNIPPERS HELBIG AND TRANNSOLAR ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS.

AN ALVEOLUS IS A HOLLOW CAVITY FOUND IN THE LUNG PARENCHYMA, AND IS THE BASIC UNIT OF VENTILATION. LUNG ALVEOLI ARE THE ENDS OF THE RESPIRATORY TREE, BRANCHING FROM EITHER ALVEOLAR SACS OR ALVEOLAR DUCTS, WHICH LIKE ALVEOLI ARE BOTH SITES OF GAS EXCHANGE WITH THE BLOOD AS WELL. THE ALVEOLAR MEMBRANE IS THE GAS EXCHANGE SURFACE. CARBON DIOXIDE RICH BLOOD IS PUMPED FROM THE REST OF THE BODY INTO THE CAPILLARIES THAT SURROUND THE ALVEOLI WHERE, THROUGH DIFFUSION, CARBON DIOXIDE IS RELEASED AND OXYGEN ABSORBED.

THE FREE FORM DESIGN OF THE PAVILION IS INSPIRED BY THE SHAPE OF THE HUMAN LUNG. THE BREATHEABLE BUILDING SKIN MEMBRANE BIOMIMICS IN DESIGN THE NATURAL VORNOI TESSELATION OF THE ARTOCARPUS HETEROPHYLLUS, WHILST FURTHER MIMICING THE ALVEOLI IN FUNCTION. THE PAVILION SHOWCASES THE WEALTH OF VARIOUS JAMAICAN FOOD PRODUCE FOR VISITORS TO TASTE, AND HIGHLIGHTS THE ARTOCARPUS HETEROPHYLLUS THROUGHOUT THE EXHIBITION.

OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, THE CARIBBEAN HAS EXPERIENCED A DRAMATIC UPSURGE IN THE FREQUENCY OF NATURAL HAZARDS, SUCH AS EARTHQUAKES AND HURRICANES. THESE EVENTS HAVE CAUSED SIGNIFICANT SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DISRUPTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, DESTROYING YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS AND INVESTMENTS, AND SHIFTING DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES AWAY FROM LONG-TERM GOALS IN ORDER TO MEET IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF RECONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION. MANY DISASTERS ARE INEVITABLE BUT THEIR DAMAGE CAN BE REDUCED SIGNIFICANTLY. IT IS INDEED RECOGNIZED THAT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF LOSSES RESULTS FROM INADEQUATE ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN. THIS THESIS PRESENTS A STUDY ON STRUCTURAL SEISMIC RISK PREVENTION TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED AND USED BY THE JAPANESE EXTENSIVELY THROUGHOUT JAPAN, AND AN ASSESSMENT COUPLED WITH A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON TWO DISASTERS TO HIT THE TWO REGIONS WITHIN THE SAME TIME FRAME. THE 2010 EARTHQUAKE THAT STRUCK HAITI (7.0 MAGNITUDE) AND 14 MONTHS LATER, THE 2011 TOHOKU EARTHQUAKE (9.0 MAGNITUDE) THAT OCCURRED OFF THE PACIFIC COAST.
