LOAD SHEDDING: Future is bleak, but predictable

A little ‘puppy love’

>> ‘No favouritism’ with load shedding in KwaDukuza, says Eskom SIBUSISO BIYELA

E

SKOM will now take over load shedding in the KwaDukuza Municipality which will improve on predictability of blackouts and reduce the amount of load shedding. Thiswasannouncedatapressbriefing held at the council chambers of KwaDukuza Municipality yesterday (Tuesday, 10 February). Infrastructure and technical serviceschairpersoncouncillorSandeep Oudhram held the briefing to “clear some uncertainties” regarding the current load shedding taking place within the municipality. “This load shedding affects all sectorsincludingbusiness, hospitalsand

the iLembe District Municipality who provides us with water,” he said. According to a presentation by Prashunt Lutchman, who is a key customer executive at Eskom, when it comes to load shedding in KwaDukuza, there is “no favouritism”. “We are avoiding a black start, contrary to social media rumors and the fact that we are load shedding should bare testament to that,” he said. “With the new system in place, Eskom will be in charge of direct load shedding in the municipality.” This means that when Eskom sheds power, it will be done throughout the municipality for two hours a day or more depending on the stage of load shedding being implemented.

Nick Hall, KwaDukuza Municipality director of electrical services, explained the municipality’s perspective on load shedding. “With the various stages from one through to three, Eskom needs us to shed enough power to reduce demand. Doing the shedding ourselves has had some drawbacks and we have negotiated with them to do the actual shedding for two hours at a time across the board,” he said. According to Hall, the KwaDukuza electrical supply system is separated into two blocks, northern and southern blocks, which run completely independently from each other.

Mother dies shortly after giving birth >> Hospital source says doctor cut woman’s bowel during C-section SIBUSISO BIYELA

A

WOMAN died at the Stanger Hospital after a complication during a caesarian-section procedure on Monday 2 February. The woman, who gave birth to a healthy baby girl, died after complaining of abdominal pains. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Thembekile Mkhize (30) died as a result of a perforation of the bowel, the organ responsible for the transport of faeces from the body.

After doctors were unable to assist Mkhize with a natural birth due to her birth canal being too narrow, she was sent to the operation theatre for a caesarian-section. Anonymous reports from hospital staff further indicate that Mkhize gave birth to a healthy baby girl however, after the birth she complained of severe abdominal pains. According to a source, the pains got so severe that she was sent back to the theatre where doctors tried to find the cause of the pain.

The source said that doctors found that Mkhize’s bowel had been perforated from the first surgery and that faeces had escaped her bowel and contaminated her abdominal cavity. Doctors tried to remove the faeces, but Mkhize later died as a result. Currently, as the hospital has not responded to questions from the Weekly, it is unclear as to what medically led to Mkhize’s death. The Department of Health’s Agiza Hlongwane and he said that he will respond to questions in writing by Monday next week. Sasko Stanger to fall under the hammer >> Iconic property set to draw attention JYOTHI LALDAS

L

ATER this month one of South Africa’s most iconic bakeries, located in KwaDukuza and belonging to Pioneer Foods, will be auctioned. The 40-year-old Sasko Stanger bakery, a landmark extending over 5000m2, is going under the hammer following the relocation of the Sasko bakery to Shakaskraal which took place in mid-2014. The new Sasko bakery is the largest greenfields bakery in South Africa and cost over R470 million to complete. During 2014, Pioneer Foods engaged in a restructuring process to reducecostsinthefaceofconstrained consumer spending. Greg Nafte of Nexus Property Group, the company tasked with taking the property to auction, said, “This is one of the most iconic properties we have ever taken to auction and the interest we have received from both local and national buyers has been phenomenal. “It is seldom that property becomes available in an area such as Stanger where property is generally tightly held, so we expect a very busy auction day. The redevelopment op-

portunities the property presents has been a big draw card for many potential buyers.” On an erf (a plot of land, usually urban, marked off for building purposes)of11704m2andwithagrosslettable area of 5 371 m2, the property features a combination of production areas, storage warehouses, offices,

KwaDukuza stanger Municipality WEEKLY causes land dispute 13 February 2015

THE KwaDukuza executive council (Exco) intends to demolish a house after they sold land not belonging to the municipality. Now the rightful owner is suing the current owner over the municipality’s mistake. The item was discussed at a council meeting on Thursday, 29 January at the KwaDukuzacouncilchambers.According to notes presented at council, a municipalofficialsoldaplotinShakavilledesignated as ERF54 in 2011. The plot was sold to a Mr. Yingwana, which unbeknownst to the unnamed official, already belonged to a Mr. Khuzwayo. Yingwana then later sold it to a Mr. Mpunzana who then built a house on the plot. At this point of the meeting, some councillors showed dissatisfaction and some confusion and speaker Thulani Khuluse stood up to bring order and further explain the situation. “I will try to explain this so that we all understand how this will affect us. So, Mpunzana bought a house from Yingwana, who believes he is the rightful owner as a transaction was made and he has documentationprovingthatheownsthe property,” he said. “Now, there we have Mpunzana relaxed in his house which he has built on the property and there comes Mrs. Mtshali, the rightful owner of the property,”

he said. Mtshali had purchased the plot from Mr. Khuzwayo, the original owner. “Imagine the surprise on Mrs. Mtshali’s face when she finds someone with a house on property that now belongs to her legally,” Khuluse explained. Khuluse further explained that Mrs. Mtshali had initiated court action against Mpunzana who refuses to move. “You see ladies and gentlemen, this may not affect us now, but it eventually will because it is our fault. What we need to do now is for council to approve the demolition of the structure so that we can minimise costs,” he said. The motion was approved and the house is set to be demolished soon to “minimise costs”.

URING 2014 the KwaDukuza Municipality’s chief financial officer warned council about the financial state of the municipality. The bottom line is that our municipality may be heading into deep financial trouble in the next few years. It is a fact that our municipality willbereducedtobankruptcyifitcontinues to spend revenue at the rate it does presently. However, it seems that the warnings of the CFO have fallen on deaf ears. Council has sceptically adopted a “we’ll just wait and see” attitude. To date there has been no joint dialogue in council about plugging the leaks in the public purse. Being privy to council decisions where millions are squandered on non-essentials is perhaps the most difficult part for me, as a councillor. While I admit that KDM has public relation responsibilities, I must also admitthatmostPReventsarenothing more than “non-essential activities” in comparison to service delivery. Some ratepayers believe these events to be nothing more than publicity stunts of the ruling party to retain the patronage of their voters. Technically speaking, for KDM to use such a large sum of ratepayers’ moneyonPReventswhilewehaveserious service delivery backlogs is actually wasteful expenditure. There are numerous matters of considerably more importance to the businesses, ratepayers and residents of Ballito, than building an unrequired ‘mega shopping centre’ merely to allow the money greedy KwaDukuza Municipality to collect more property rates to misappropriateonwildparties,andothernon-rateassociated matters. These include a taxi rank for the many people who work in Ballito and travel by taxi, an undertaking to repair and resurface the road infrastructure over a period ofsayfiveyears, anundertakingtoensure that Ballito has a totally acceptable power supply that is continuous without interruptions, an undertaking from iLembe and Siza Water that the potable water

supply is not likely to fail due to any of the normal excuses, the final demolition and removal of the remains of the Dolphin Coast Mall and an undertaking to build a main police station in Ballito. I’m certain that the ratepayers and residents of the greater Ballito area, and possibly Mr Pravin Gordhan, would give top marks to KwaDukuza Municipality if those matters could be attended to in the short term. We would be able to give them top marks, and applaud them for their obviouseffortstomakeBallitotheclean, safe, well maintained holiday town that it was in the past. You don't have to be rich to enjoy Valentine's Day >> Enjoy the day of love on a budget

D

EBT is not the most romantic of gifts. Avoid breaking the bank this Valentine's Day by following these tips. Valentine's Day is just around the corner and South Africans are gearing up to show their love for that special person in their lives. However love isn't free and the Valentine's costs add up with the usual gifts and romantic dinners. Not only can you cut down on the costs this Valentine's, but thoughtful alternatives can also be more romantic than store bought gifts. "Valentine's Day tends to be an expensive day for most people," says Eunice Sibiya, head of consumer education at FNB. "It can easily cost close to R800 when you factor in all the different elements such as cards, chocolates, a dinner out and flowers." Here are some tips to make this year's Valentine's special, without putting a dent in your pocket. "There are plenty of heart shaped chocolates wrapped in red foil or boxes of chocolate on display at stores before Valentine's, not only

are they a cliché, but they are often fairly pricey. There are lots of ways to get your loved one a sweet present without spending a fortune," says Sibiya. A cheap and colourful way to give a gift is to wash out a glass jar and fill it with his or her favourite sweets such as jelly beans or jelly tots and tie it up with a ribbon. The cost of flowers at Valentine's shoots up because of high demand around this period. "Rather than buying flowers why

don't you pick some from your garden or even buy a plant, a small pot plant is not very expensive and can last far longer than cut flowers. If you don't have a garden full of flowers, you could get creative and make them from paper or other materials you can find around the house," says Sibiya. Consider making your own card, if you have kids get them to help. Try to think out of the box, there are lots of different ways of sending a message without the usual card, and some of them may just be more personal than the usual cheesy greeting card.

WEEKLY "Why don't you make your own card," suggest Sibiya. "A thoughtful, handwritten note is always a lovely romantic gesture." Other alternatives are sending an e-card, there are thousands to choose from on the web they are completely free. Restaurants are usually packed on Valentine's night and specialised Valentine dinner menus more expensive then the norm. Skip the crowds and have your own special dinner, just the two of you. "There are lots of alternatives to the jam-packed pricey restaurants," says Sibiya. "Just a home cooked meal with your loved one's favourite foods should do the trick. If you aren't confident in your cooking skills why don't you set up a picnic on your balcony or in your back garden and surprise them when they get home." Instead of getting something couriered if that special someone isn't around this Valentine's, why don't send them a gift of airtime, or a voice note. "You don't even have to spend money to buy airtime, you can use your rewards to buy airtime for your Valentine, with the proviso that they only spend it on speaking to you," concludes Sibiya. There are plenty of options for those wanting to send a special something this Valentine's Day, that doesn't have to break the bank, and may get their heart racing. - Women24

You’re the Heart of my Heart Janitha

In the busyness of life you are my resting place, a shoulder to lean on, a hand to hold, a set of footprints right there beside me. With a single word, you turn a bad day around; with a single smile, you bring on the sunshine. You never cease to amaze and bless me. You’re the treasure I keep discovering every day. Life can get messy at times, and things can be less than perfect. But through the good, the bad , and the in-between, you’ve proven over and over that together we can make it through anything. Our love just grows more precious with each passing day. I love sharing the dance of life with you. Your love, your caring, the person you are-these things bring happiness to me. Heart of my heart, I love you... yesterday, today, and forever. Happy Valentine Your loving husband Roy Dhani

I Love You, no matter what Roy Dhani

I believe in us, and I believe our love will stand the test of time and circumstance. It inspires my confidence and devotion. It guides me, empowers me, and motivates me to hope and dream. Our love is the one thing that I know will last forever. Because of you, I am sure that I was not meant to live alone. You are my life, and your love is the greatest gift I’ve ever known. I have never cared for anyone the way I care for you, and I know that I will love you unconditionally and always. While we have our problems sometimes, our relationship is worth whatever it takes to save it. Loving you has changed me in so many ways, and making you happy is my number one goal. I feel so lucky that I found my soul partner to travel through life with, and I know that I’m a different person than I would have been without you. “Forever” has never been just a word to me, but it has taken on a new meaning because of you, and forever is how long I’ll be loving you. Happy Valentine Your loving wife Janitha

In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory

Sakunthala Harinanan (Mala) Called to Rest: 01/02/2015

Our memories of you built a special bridge from the day you had to part. To help us feel we’re with you still and sooth our grieving heart. Our memories span the years we shared, preserving ties that bind, they build a special bridge of love and bring us peace of mind. The memories we share will never be forgotten!

When God looked down upon earth, he saw someone similar to him. Someone who had the strength and the courage to take on the burdens of the world. Someone who could change peoples hearts, bring families together and provide for those in need. He saw you and on that fateful morning, he took you home to rest. Whilst the heavens rejoice having a great soul, we on earth miss you and will cherish your memories. In the 65th minute Mlima was forced into action yet again, making a brilliant save at the near-post to deny left winger Mkhize. In the 75th minute Liverpool’s Simlindile Shangase was perfectly positioned in the box, intercepting a cross from Mwelase, but his execution was poor, missing the target from close range. With less than five minutes remaining and a draw looking a fair outcome, Mkhize broke the hearts of the Liverpool fans after he gently tapped the ball past the advancing Liverpool keeper to give Shakaville a 1-0 win. An ecstatic Shakaville coach Myman Zulu said: “It was a scrappy first halfwithmyplayersadoptingtheapproach of their opponents - long balls, but after my pep talk with the boys - asking them to use their strength and pass the ball to their mates, it produced the desired result”. Liverpool coach Vusi Nsele said: “Wewereunluckyinconcedingalate goal, but I must commend our debutante keeper, Mlima who played outstandingly”. SPORT

Grove End have been begun their training in earnest in quest for a hat-trick of league titles since winning the EZE’S Electrical-sponsored Competitive League title in 2013 and 2014. They should proved too strong in pool B and are strongly fancied to finish the top of the pool. Newly crowned social league champions, Sunbrook have been grouped alongside competitive league teams KSST, Randsons and Warriors Sport and despite boasting a wealth of talented players it is highly unlikely that they will advance to

the knockout stages (semi-finals) of the tournament. After being dethroned as league champions in 2013, volleyball pundits expected KSST to make a determined bid to reclaim the title in 2014, but yet again they walked in the shadows of nemesis, Grove End and had to settle for the runners-up spot. Rumours are rife that there is dissension in the camp with Kyle Puckree, Sherwin Daniels and Cameron Singh expected to quit the club in search of greener pastures. Randsons have beefed up their

squad with two new signings and are strongly fancied to finish at the top of pool A (ahead of KSST and Warriors Sport). WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HERE will be no love lost when 14 nations meet on Valentine’s Day (14 February) in Australia and New Zealand in quest for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. In pool A, Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka (probably in the same finishing order) are strongly fancied to advance to the quarter-final stages of the tournament. In pool B, India, South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan are favourites to book their place in the knockout stages of the tournament. Our South African heroes have played some exciting cricket over the last 18 months and many believe that thisisourcountry’sbestchancetowin their first Cricket World Cup. Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey will work with South Africa in a consultancy role during the World Cup. Will he be able to provide the ‘magic’thattheProteasneedtoclinch the 2015 silverware? Should India finish at the top of pool B (ahead of South Africa) then there is no doubt that an Australia vs India final is definitely on the cards. Weekly’s sports reporter asked

some KwaDukuza residents: Who theythinkwillwinthe2015ICCCricket World Cup? Aishwaria Singh, granddaughter of the famous Tambuti Singh, said: “As an Indian supporter I was truly blessed to have been present at two of the most important games that India has played in the history of the ICC Cricket World Cup. These two matches were none other than the semi-finalagainstPakistaninMohaliandthe finals against Sri Lanka in Mumbai where India emerged victorious as the 2011 ICC World Cup champions. “Words cannot describe the emotions that ran through my veins the minute India captain, MS Dhoni’s sig-

nature shot - the helicopter - went for a six, erupting the whole of India, carrying the team to victory. “So I will continue to support India to notch up back-to-back World Cup titles.” N.R. Singh, vice-president of Ilembe Cricket Union, said: “Although my heart says South Africa, my mind says Australia to lift the world cup. Australia has a well-balanced side with youth and experience. “They have consistent explosive batsmen and their bowlers are not only consistent strikers, but they can contain at the death. With explosive batting and high scores expected I predict that bowling at the death will be the key to success.” DiyajalMaharaj,agrade12pupil at Ashton College, said: “I lived in London for a long time and it’s become a part of who I am. I will be rooting for Joe Root and Ravi Bopara to guide England to victory.” Surauv Singh, a grade 11 pupil at Northwood Boys and a regular player for Dawnheights, who ply their trade in the KZN Challenge League, said: “South Africa is my country and my dream is to play cricket for South Africa some day. I expect AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis to play prominent roles in guiding South Africa to victory.” Isaac Abraham, president of KwaDukuza Volleyball Association, said: “If the Proteas don’t reach the final, don’t look beyond the Aussies to clinch the ICC World Cup on home soil. Australia boasts one of the most destructive batting line-ups in the world. The batting line-up consists of names such as David Warner, Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, George Bai-

ley, Aaron Finch, Brad Hodge, Brad Haddin and Cameron White. “Each and everyone one of these batsmen are match winners in their own right and proved themselves of being worthytobeinthe team on more than one occasion,” he added.
