March 31, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The Jewish people were waiting for a Messiah to release them from Roman oppression. But Jesus had a different image of what it meant to be released. When he travels to the east side of the Sea of Galilee and heals a man chained in a graveyard, he shows us what it really looks like to be a part of God’s kingdom. As Jesus sends out the man released from his demons, so he sends us - healed, released, and unqualified, yet ready.Â

OPENING PRAYER God of all, you love us beyond compare and are faithful to us even when we turn away. You are patient and wise, caring and just. We admit that we are not worthy of your love for us or deserving of your good favor. We have ignored your will, treated others of your children with disdain, and failed to be grateful for your mercy and blessings. Forgive us once again. Restore us to right relationship with you and with one another, for we ask it in Christ’s name. Amen. PRELUDE | In Christ Alone Patricia Cota, composer | Bells of St. Andrew, Lynn Hayes, director *CALL TO WORSHIP Bless the Lord at all times. May God’s praise be continually in my mouth. Magnify the Lord with me. Let us exalt the name of the Lord together. Seek the Lord and be filled. For those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Happy are those who take refuge in God. Oh taste and see that the Lord is good! *OPENING HYMN | And Are We Yet Alive 553 | Dennis *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! PSALM 130 NIV Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Common English Bible I cry out to you from the depths, Lord—my Lord, listen to my voice! Let your ears pay close attention to my request for mercy! If you kept track of sins, Lord—my Lord, who would stand a chance? But forgiveness is with you—that’s why you are honored. I hope, Lord. My whole being hopes, and I wait for God’s promise. My whole being waits for my Lord—more than the night watch waits for morning; yes, more than the night watch waits for morning! Worship Series | March 9/10-April 6/7 | Join us for a seven-week look into

the geography of Jesus, the long-expected Jewish revolutionary Messiah. A virtual tour of the geography of Jesus’ life will give us a fresh perspective on the purpose of Jesus’ ministry and how it overturned people’s expectations of what was going to happen. What Jesus did really mean when he preached that the kingdom of God was at hand, and what false expectations do we carry about what Jesus is going to do for us?

What did Jesus really mean when he preached that the kingdom of God was at hand, and what false expectations do we carry about what Jesus is going to do for us?
